I want to go to eb13 but i want all my junk... im on dk28 right now. can i use cwm and backup all my stuff and then update to eb13 then restore data? it worked when i did a reset but this is a new firmware so...?
Restoring data across different firmware's is risky. However, EB13 doesn't look too much different than DK28 so you pay your money and take your chances...
what could go wrong? brick of some sort? software problems?
haha 69th post
anyone got insight? what would happen?
i guess i could just try it and if things get effed up i can always go back to my backup in cwm right?

yea pretty much. Do it. be my guinea pig and let me know how it works out for you
Worst case scenario you spend a bunch of time getting back to exactly where you are now.
Get Titanium Backup.
Backup all your apps and data.
Flash, root, then reinstall TB.
Restore.
I prefer this to CWM, but it's good to have both...

i got some kind of hacked titanium backup but i did it once and it didnt restore everything. like some apps were missing and crap.
You may get glitches and force closes. You won't brick your phone. I've seen some weird issues traced down to restoring /data across different frameworks and builds, but I carried my /data from di18->dj29->dk05->dk17->dk28 without a major problem. I haven't tried it with eb13, but I'm sure it will still be hit or miss for people. If all else fails, just start over without restoring /data. It can be a pain, but it only takes a day or two to set everything up again.
I tried to back up and update to EB13 this morning, and after I updated and attempted to restore, I was without my phone for the day. I needed to go back to DK28 to restore all of my junk. I'll probably just use Titanium this time around, so no, don't try to back up, then upgrade to EB13, and then restore your backup, it doesn't work.

So I have to return my phone cause one of my led flashes isnt working right so I'm going to run the ruu and return to stock for the return. my question is when I get my new one, after I root again can I restore my nandorid backup on the new phone without issues or is it not gonna work cause of different esn numbers etc?
Bleh, no one knows hehe?
I sure don't know, bunp!

Absolutely not. You will permanently overwrite your wimax keys, and risk messing many other things up. You cannot restore backups from different phones.
Titanium Backup, however, will work just fine for your apps. Just dont restore any system data, just apps only.

he could restore a nandroid backup as long as he doesn't backup wimax withvit. Then the wimax won't be touched, as long as he's using amon ra he can choose not to back up wimax and cache and recovery, just the other options boot, system, sdext, android secure and it shouldn't do any harm whatsoever. Only if wimax is backed up will it Bork the keys. I made just a back up of my wimax saved it to my pc and never back up wimax when I nandroid. Saves some space and keeps my wimax safe from being lost in case of a catastrophic SD failure, like the night I was bored in the hospital after a car accident, was all doped up on an iv of dilaudid and wiped my sdcard while I was flashing roms DOH! I felt like a retard when I went to flash from SD and it was blank lol. Luckily I had my tablet with my SD backup with me or I woulda been really bored with a dead phone.
ok im kind of a bit of a noob to rooting but ive been at it a few months, i tried to flash a custom rom today (first time) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17235986 everything went fine i did all the wipes x3 and followed the instructions and it makes it to the revolution boot screen then loops back to clockwork recovery mod so before i bring it back to stock with odin in a few hours, is there ANY way to resolve this?
Could be a # of problems. Ill try to help after I get some sleep and get t work. I just didn't want you to feel stranded.
ive decided to go ahead and use odin and try to install another custom rom later. maybe ill have some feedback by then
now i just have a phone picture an exclamation point and a computer showing up
ok nvm i managed to get it back to stock. i do want to figure out what went wrong to begin with though.
Probably a bad flash or a bad download.... re download it and try again.... Does cwm show any hint that something went wrong with the installation?
At a quick read is says it auto converts you to EXT4 so as long as that went OK it may be what Theduce said. It could also be bad data. You may have to do a factory data reset before flashing if you have everything backed up and can restore your apps and stuff. Sometimes a reflash when you are in the boot loop will work. As a tester I often have to factory data reset after getting boot loops. Probably why my SD card is littered with backups.
i used titanium backup and backed everything up before i used odin, afterward i checked my sd card and it looks like everything is still there, how do i get it back? also if i cant get my backup back can someone give me a link to a one click root file my computer keeps reading the ones i have already as bad so it wont even run them
EDIT: ok so after reading yet another guide on flashing roms it appears i did do everything right, probably a bad rom like everyones guessing also, should i even try to reinstall this rom or just try and find another one? (any suggestions? im on EC05)

As for TB and restoring ur apps and data. Just go in TB and restore user apps

You will have to root again, download Titanium from the market and restore user apps. Redownload the ROM if you are dead set on trying that one. Once you know how to get everything working again after a failed flash the hard part is over. Just an inconvenience when stuff blows up.

Way ahead of you XD. Rerooted, figured out titanium backup, and installed syndicate rom last night =P. E.R.A was just a bad rom/download I guess. As for zrom it was syndicate obviously >_>
odin is your best friend and its always good to make sure you back everything up
I just installed CM9 to try and get the link to cell on my home phone to work. The Stock ICS would pair with my home phone but not connect up correctly. I was hoping the the raw build of CM9 might fix this bluetooth issue, but i guess not. Seems like the only way my phone will connect is under GB. How can i go back to GB without brickiing my phone? Can i use sfhub's one click odin to EL29? Do i have to wipe anything first??
EDIT: In addition, now i have a triangle on my phone, i want to use triangle away, but it does make me nervious. In any case, would i use this before going back to GB or after?
I was able to go back to GB using one click odin EL29. That worked just great! The problem is now when i tried to restore my apps from titainium backup it complains that my android id change? I dont know how to change it back since im not using the pro version? Is there a way to do this? I have an app for my work that requires restoring uses the same ID, otherwise i need to contact IT department again to get my mail working again
Hopefully you made a nand back up of your previous before you flashed cm9, I would just restore that.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
yeah that would have made sense, but i didnt. I figured that you cant really restore but i guess you could have. i didnt think i would have to go back
In tibu under preferences choose manage android ID and try restore id from backup see if you can restore it I think it saves your id to sd
Edit: not sure if that works without pro I've had pro version for over 2 yrs  but worth a try

I didn't nandroid backup because I thought it was a waste of time since you can't really restore them on different roms. I just assumed that since everything was backed up with TB that I could just restore the apps and data. I had no ideas that the android ID would change. I'm not quite sure what that really is. I wouldn't think a factory reset would change it but I guess I was wrong.
At some point last night I was able to get the apps to show up in TB list. That's said the one app I need for work did restore but does not sync with our servers anymore. I can only guess it has something to do with the android ID. In order to see the apps again I redid ODIN el29, which changed my android ID yet again. I thought that was something that was burned into the phone somehow. TB is still asking if I want to restore not the original one but the 2nd one if that makes sense.

First post and I have to say great forum here and lots of great information!!
I am a long time unix / linux user and work in the technology product development and I have been researching for about a week after updating to official ICS over Kies for information on backuping up my phone and rooting.
I had considered rooting before but never had a good reason really until I loaded the official ICS update and had to reset to get it working, losing all my apps / data. Kies was not cooperating so I did not get a good backup and it would not keep my app settings any way. This is when I found out that my old Blackberry and even iPhone had much more complete backup solutions that non-rooted Android. I have totally recovered the other devices without losing anything in the past so I thought Android would be a snap as well.
Any way to the point now. After searching I have found great work done by the members and I feel pretty comfortable proceeding to root my stock ICS and getting Titanium to do a full backup. I will fix my keyboard and few other things while at it.
My questions are:
1. When the next official release comes from ATT / Samsung will I have to reflash to the stock boot.img (found in another thread) to be able to get the upgrade and then root my phone again?
2. Once rooted, is it better to just come back here and get the updated ROM and flash manually?
3. Is the best way to achieve the complete backup solution I am looking for?
I am pretty happy with the stock ROMs but I want to be able to get a good and full backup going forward since it takes so long to reinstall everything. I could even live with the bloatware if I was confident I could completely restore at anytime.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Roy
Titanium is good for backing up apps and data. If you want a complete back up, you'll want to make a nandroid backup with CWMR. As for the ROM part, it all depends on if you're happy with what you get stock or if you like customized things. I'm sick right now or I would go into detail.

Thanks Shawn. I saw a reference to nandroid but did not realize it was part of CWMR. Can I assume if I get CWMR loaded I will be able to backup my current apps / settings or will that just set me up for the next time? I have been sort of assuming once I get CWMR loaded and get root that I may lose my current settings.
Appreciate the reply especially while sick! Hope you feel better soon.

A nandroid backup is more like an image backup of the flash, so you would have to restore the whole thing to get back any files you may have lost. It's mostly for backing up prior to flashing a new ROM, so if you don't like it you can go back to what you had easily.
If you want to back up pictures and things like that you should be able to plug the phone into a computer and mount the flash as a drive (I've done this on my Linux and Windows systems many times). Then you can copy the files you want to save to your computer, or copy a new ROM to the phone so you can flash it with CWMR.
You're welcome. Nandroid backups are for when your phone bootloops or is "bricked" or if you want to restore to something previous. For me, I use Titanium to backup all app data before flashing something and then make a Nandroid with CWMR. In my opinion its a good idea to use both so you're safe from any problems down the road.

mvi57 and Shawn,
Thanks guys, got it now. I will probably do both types of backups as well.
I think I understand the system a little better now. The recovery partition probably does not affect the bootloader or ROM so if I just replace it with CWMR I still boot the same and will not lose my current data. I am guessing the next official ROM will probably load fine but I would probably just have to root the phone again.
Thanks for putting up with the noob questions. I have not done embedded development before but some of the guys on team have so I have some terminology i need to get used to.

It's a hard lesson to learn that there were relatively easy solutions to avoid it :/ I as a fellow long time Linux user, I'm suprised!. I myself can not stand not having root access when I need it. I luckily have had Titanium Backup for quite some time now and it IS a life saver for many of your apps and settings! It's a must! I too had the issue of not being able to update via kies and assumed it was because my device was rooted, so in my frustrated lack of sleep mood I had going, I said meh all and grabbed easily accessible data off the memory and flashed the ICS from sammobile.com if i remember right. I've since flashed NardRom as well and am having some signal/sms issues. That being said, MAKE SURE you do a nandroid backup and don't get all anxious and overzealous like I did. If I am not mistaken and understand correctly, sometimes when flashing roms you may overwrite various signal related files like the modem or wireless? With a nandroid backup you can simply restore from that like nothing ever happened! Just follow directions to the T. I've yet to brick my SGH-i927 but I've bricked our captivates a few times

I am with you all the way.
I have installed CWMR now and completed a nandroid backup. After tracking down the backup I copied to my laptop for safe keeping. Also installed the keyboard fix only and it worked fine. Later tonight I will give root a try with Titanium.
BTW I was having SMS issues with the stock ICS. No alerts and basic funky things. I have loaded Go SMS Pro and am happier not only fixing the app issues but giving me Group text mode so I am not an outcast with the rest of my iPhone family
Thanks for helping me get going here.

As others have posted. I back up all my information per app via Titanium backup and every few months I make a new Nandroid backup. This gives me the best of both worlds. A full backup that I can get back to via Nandroid backup and little backups from Titanium backup if I choose to uninstall and re-install an individual app later on in the future.
Just a few other tips from my recent experiences. Since the problems I was having with NardROM... an entire night with no text msgs from my ole lady got me pretty worried and I learned it was issues with my flash or the rom with my phone so I wiped it out and went back to the stock ICS. I also flashed the keyboard fix and have noticed no problems. I did flash the tether fix too but it's not working for me at the moment so I'll play with it later. I'm also using my regular Captivate as a secondary phone/toy using google voice and wireless so if I'm not getting anything on one # during testing or usage I will notice it and get it on the other phone.
Also, as a long time GOSMS user I like to try out the various features but I must warn you stay away from, or have a backup plan on top of it, if you purchase the 180-day premium features and utilize the local backup. I'm not fond of having things backed up to a cloud so like you I back up all my phone stuff to my server and desktops at home but running raid 5 (paranoid much?). The problem I had is when I restored all my text from the cloud after a flash and noticed the new local backup feature in a GOSMS update I thought hey i can do away with the cloud and use this right!? Wrong. I deleted the cloud backup without double checking and on this last flash, attempted to restore roughly 20k+ messages from the Gosms local backup feature and it errored out or froze the phone EVERY time I tried. Frantically searching through everything I had, I learned that Titanium Backup does do a backup typically of the related data, I beleive the listed backup is SMS/APN/MMS or something similar. You have to enable writing to /system in Titanium's settings. There's a howto on xda I beleive and google searches on restoring it. Another thing, if you have numerous backups and are playing around and i.e. have just flashed, installed Titaniumbackup and want to backup something before you restore it from an older version, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CHANGED MAX # of BACKUPS FIRST, otherwise you have just overwritten your previous backup :crying:

Great information thanks!!
The backups I am most worried about are all the system settings, app settings and data mostly. I am probably older than most folks here and I do not really text much except family and a few co-workers. I honestly never worried about backing up my SMS / MMS but I will check on my APNs because I had that problem on a Blackberry once. Email is where I store most important stuff and talk about paranoid I have multiple copies of my emails on different computers on different operating systems. 20 years working in storage will do that to you
I believe that if Google or Samsung even came up with a backup solution that did what Blackberry or Apple could do it would solve a lot and I probably would not even be working on this. Blackberry saved my bacon more than once with the complete backup they do in their clunky software and last year when my daughters iPhone would no longer power off, I was able to use iTunes to do a complete backup and she was up and running on a new phone in 15 mins exactly where she left off.
Thanks for the advice!
So I was got my s3 awhile back and rooted it and ran Clean bean without any problems, well after those annoying system update messages started to get to me I decided I wanted to try and new rom and update my phone a bit as I would be leaving the country and wanted my phone updated. So I decided to flash slimbeam , It went off without a hitch. Only problem was I could not figure out how to get Titanium backup to restore all my contacts and app data. I saved all the backup files on my computer and even after putting them in the Titanium backup directory it would not let me do it. Anyway.....I decided to try and use the titanium backup program that lets you extract the data from a nandroid backup and flash it in recovery. I forgot to put it on my internal card when doing so and when I did my wipe I deleted it (epic facepalm) so I have to reflash cleanbean go back into my phone and make the .zip file to flash...
So I got tired and went to bed before flashing anything else, when I wake up. My phone is stuck on the samsung boot image screen. I try starting only to get the same thing. So I boot to CWS recovery and try to restore one of my nandroid backups. I accidentally hit backup to external sd and it started to run a backup, thenn my car charger came unplugged and the phone died....thinking it would just make that specific nandroid corrupt I thought nothing of it. So I reboot to CWS recovery again and actually try to do a restore with my oldest nandroid, But I get the error "Error updating /system" and error updating "/data".....I tried multiple backups that I have, none of them work and all produce that message.. 'm fairly new to this, What Am I doing wrong? I really love this site and all you guys do and I will be forever greatful of any help you guys can give me. I leave the country for Mexico in 2 days and I cant afford to pay the $150 to get my phone warrantied from sprint!

Ok Lucid, stay calm.
First off, never do any work in Recovery without a fully charged phone. You're just asking for trouble if you're relying on the cable being plugged in.
I've never had good luck with trying to restore data in TiBu from a nandroid backup.
I'm not going to go into how to make your backups work. I'm honestly more concerned with just getting your phone back into working order. This thread has the most current Stock Rom in TAR form. Odin instructions can be found in this post within that thread.
After you're back to 100% stock, unrooted, you can follow the rooting guide to gain root back.
THANKS

And after looking through the sextape forums thread a bit more, you don't actually have to reroot, just use the following TAR file:
"Restore" Versions - Wipes your user data
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Stock_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]

They also have really good instructions for the Odin work on there.
Hope you get it working!
GOT IT! Thanks for the help man, worked like a charm. Even learned a thing or two .....So can you tell me how I get my stuff back using titanium backup? I got the backup files on my computer and I'm flashing a rom as I type this.

Here is a link to a post where I talked about Tianium Backup and what not to restore. It should be fairly informative.
In TiBu for SMS and call logs hit menu from the main screen and backup data as XML, select save locally when it's done. Move the xml files to external SD if you're gonna flash a 4.2.2 rom, flash new rom move the xmls back to internal, go to tibu, same menu, restore from xml and select which one you want to restore. It'll open a quasi file explorer, locate the corresponding xml for the option you chose(call log, SMS, wifi, bookmarks) and select it. It will restore the data via XML and you'll have all your call logs, sms, bookmarks and wifi accesspoints back like you never left your previous rom.
