am i going to run into potential problems if i do a clockwork backup in dk28 odin eb13 then i do an advanced restore of data only??
Maybe. There's only one way to find out.
Sometimes the advanced restore works across build versions without a problem and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it only breaks for some people. I carried my initial di18 /data all the way through dj29 -> dk05 -> dk17 -> dk28 before not restoring it so I could try to install less junk.

How do you dump an image of the phone's ROM to a file, and is it flashable via Odin when you dump it? If it is not Odin flashable, how do you make it so it can be flashed with Odin?
99% sure this isn't possible.
Closest you will get is doing a backup with ClockWork and then you can restore it to bring the phone back to the identical state it was when you made the backup.
You could probably dump the /system and make a .zip to get a flashable zip file but that's about it.

So how do we get the flashable files, such as "SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar" that we can flash via Odin? My main issue with CWM is for when I'm messing with other ROMS. To date, despite clearing all caches and data multiple times, I've never been able to do a CWM restore without first Odin flashing the base system (Stock DI18 or DK28). Every time I've backed up (say DI18) with CWM, flashed DK28, decided to go back to my original DI18, it would never restore right. It would only do so if I first Odin'ed the stock DI18, then restored the backup.
I'd love to be able to dump my own Odin flashable backup for these purposes.
Now if CWM was a full Nandroid backup that completely re-flashed the ROM top to bottom, that would be different.

Were you making sure to flash a kernel when restoring your backup? Nandroid doesn't backup or restore your kernel. So if you updated to dk28 and then tried to restore back to di18, you would still have the dk28 kernel and would have problems. If you flash a di18 based kernel after restoring your di18 backup, you should be fine. I've found the easiest way to restore a backup is just to reflash the rom and then advanced restore /data. Your data partition is where your apps and settings will be.
If I used the built-in backup capability of FroYo on DK28, then Odin to DI18 and update to stock EB13, will it automatically re-download my programs and whatnot once I log in?
What auto froyo method you talking about? If your going to odin why not just odin directly to eb13?
On 2.2, when you're going through the first-time setup, it asks if you want to automatically back up your apps & settings.
When I had my Hero running 2.2, this meant that every time I wiped it to go to a different version, it would automatically re-download all the apps I had installed before.
I did end up using Odin to go directly to EB13 (didn't realize it was available as a .tar at the time of my original post), and it seems that no, the automatic re-downloading didn't happen.
I can say "no" as of now. I used Odin to update to EB13 and none of my apps have been restored automatically.
The only ones that got restored automatically for me was system apps in the market.

I dont think you can. The option isn't there in the settings
The auto backup feature only backs up your user settings so if you uninstall an app and then reinstall it, it restores your setting for that app. It doesn't restore the apps themselves unfortunately

Odd. As I said before, when I used 2.2 on my Hero, it would always automatically re-download any apps I had installed...
Thanks, everyone who worked on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=963652 . It looks like a very helpful update thread, and I'm looking forward to trying it. I just have one concern:
Will I still have all my apps and stored data/preferences with those apps after updating? I imagine not, right? What's the best way to restore after updating? (I'm running stock rooted DK28 with CWM.)
I have Titanium backups, but I don't really know how they work. I mean, if all of my app data is cleared, doesn't that include my Titanium backups? Also, Titanium doesn't back up preferences for stock/core apps like gmail, right? How do I restore preferences for those?
Thanks in advance for any help!
It depends. If you use the update.zip, your apps and settings will still be there.
If you use the windows updater tool or odin, everything will be wiped.
Thanks! Which update.zip? If you mean the one mentioned in step 11 here, I thought that only works for DI18 people, not DK28 people? Or is it worth trying?
I dont think it could hurt to try

My bad. The update zip is only for di18. And you can't have cwm.
Try this: look in the wiki. Get the di18 with modem that is cwm flashable. Then get the EB13 rooted deodexed stock rom. Both of those are near the top of the official rom listing on the wiki. Flash the di18 with cwm to roll your phone and modem back. Then do the eb13 to update.
In the end I backed up a lot with Titanium Backup (all apps and most "green" system settings), Odined to DI18, flashed the Sprint update.zip (not the pre-rooted deodexed one), and rerooted with one-click/CWM 2.5. Basically, this (the first set of instructions) plus this. I lost my call logs, but Titanium kept everything else.
I definitely recommend this procedure to rooted DK28 people who want to keep their settings, don't care about call logs, and want things rooted but otherwise as "stock" as possible.
Thanks for everyone's help!
I've been having this problem ever since I started using EC05. Every time I try to use the voice recognition option on the keyboard, or in Google Nav, it FC's whatever app I'm using.
What I've done so far to get to the situation I'm currently in:
Backed up previous install of Bonsai 4.0.1
Odin'd back to EB13 to have a fresh, clean install
Odin'd Stock Plus EB05 ROM EXT4
Flashed in CWM Matted Blues 1.4 theme
Restored Data only from Bonsai backup
Is it something to do with restoring the data from Bonsai? Ever since they incorporated EC05 into their ROM, I've been having this issue. However, I was under the impression that, by using the advanced restore option in CWM, and restoring only the data, that it would only be replacing texts, apps, and settings.
Is anyone else having this problem?

Do you have the updated voice search from the market?
I have whatever would have been installed with the Stock Plus ROM. I'm in the middle of starting over from scratch (without restoring anything) to see if I can resolve some other issues as well. If I still have this issue with voice search, I'll try and install it from the market.
Is it possible to have a rooted device, use nandroid to make a backup, revert to stock/unroot, and then restore data from that backup? Can you even use the backup after you unroot?
never tried that - although I do not see why not
odin back to factory reset
you will need to odin clockwork recovery as stock recovery will not work
three finger startup to Clockwork
then go to restore - advanced - pick the file and restore data only
I just learned about advanced restore recently but have not done what you ask
If it does not work you can restore to where you were with no harm done
remember that titanium backup only works with root access.
If you're stock then you won't have the recovery needed to do a restore from the nand backup.
Yes, you would have to have clockwork recovery installed also though. Then just odin back to one of the stock images. Then later re root and reinstall clockwork and restore back up.
If you are talking about EI22 and want to keep CWM as a recovery to be able to restore said backup then you will need a custom kernel anyway so that the stock recovery doesn't keep overwriting CWM. What is the reason why you want to do this?

I screwed up my phone a while back with the crappy samsung cable that comes with it. Ever since it has been slower and my pc won't recognize it no matter what I do. So I bought a new cable and I wanted to revert to stock to try and start over with the rooting and custom rom process, but I didn't want to lose all my contacts, apps, music, etc. in the process.

OK. once you root again and have CWM back on you will be able to restore everything. So Odin away to EC05 stock, one-click root, flash a GB ROM and restore your data.
Well you should always be saving your contacts to your google account, then when you sign back in it will just use your account to reload your contacts. Your music is saved to SD, so when yiou open any new music program it should search your SD and find the music. Likeness previous posts, the issue your going to have doing this is not having a custom recovery...you wont be able to restore a nand with stock recovery. I agree with previous posts, it sucks you'll lose data, but the most functional and clean way to do this would be to Odin to EC05, use the EC05 to EI22 modem zip in the development section, and flash your custom rom and kernel. If you are concerned with performance and lag, see Universeral Adrenaline Shot and Supercharger script...good Luck!
