I have a Desire HD with 2.2, and im assuming 2.3 will be released for it some time (does anyone know when?) - Thing is I dont know how updates work on Android (first smartphone). I've only had experience with iPod Touch where as it updated via iTunes.
Do I manually have to update with a 2.3 rom or is a program gonna do it for me? Also, when going from 2.2 to 2.3, will it wipe my phone clean, removing all apps.?
Android 2.3 will not be around soon...
and the updates can either be installed via htc.com or if the updates are released as over the air (OTA) update, your phone will notify you when there is an update. You just have to press update when you see the notification on your phone. You can manually check for updates via Menu ---> Settings ---> About phone ----> system software updates.
An update is likely to remove your contacts etc. But that is yet to see. HTC will mention if the update will erase your data or not.
But 2.3 is on Nexus S and many more already, how long are they gonna wait before letting other devices get it? Im not an Apple-fanboy, but I like it how they let all their devices get the latest update, and not just the newest ones.
Unfortuneately its not as simple as that.....google may release the latest update but each phone is different and cannot use the single one update that has been released....for example if you have a desire hd then you will have to wait for htc to modify the update to include sense ....or if you have a xperia then you will have to wait for Sony ericcson to modify it to include mediascape and timescape.......where as apple control their own Operating system and devices on which it is released on as such they dont need to implement other third party phone manufactures modifications to their update....hope this helps...
Feel free to correct me if im wrong

I didn't even think of the fact that each manufacturer has their own customized android-system. Suddenly open-source makes more sense . In my head I was waiting for Google to release it, not HTC . Does any HTC devices officially have 2.3 yet? (Not hacked/pirated download) Cause then at least that'd be a sign of it coming - hopefully - soon.
Sounds like you shouldn't mess with the phone, like rooting it and get 2.3 now, I say wait it out til htc release an ota update to 2.4, I'm guessing at least 2 or 3 months from now.

Havent had plans for it either. Rooting and customROMs is just too technical for me, and I fancy the stock rom alot (first smart phone... I'd be happy with any ROM )
2.4? Then I guess it would only make sense for HTC to skip 2.3 (well... or at least if 2.4 is coming in April!)
Thanks for the stuff, guys! Gonna wait out for 2.4!!!

By the time Gingerbread is out for this Phone, it will be Snowing at your place.
Meant, HTC plans for Gingerbread is not so likely, if so do happen, likely around in 6 month or so. By that time Desire HD2 is out already with Duo Core and 3.2 MP Frontal Camera / 10 MP Rear Camera w/ Dual Flash.
Just read the Bible on Rooting, aint so hard, had a 2nd grader done it on my extra phones. Once Rooted and Custom ROM, you will LOVE all the Extra Speed and Bumps the Factory RUU had all this time.

Hi All,
After being a iPhone fan since they first launched, I am getting my first android phone tomorrow. The price of the iPhone 4 put me off purchasing one and to be honest iOS is rubbish without a jailbreak to set it free.
So tomorrow i'll be getting the HTC Desire via Orange. I have some questions if that's ok.
1) Since it's Orange giving me the phone, is it likely that it'll have some kind of horrendous customized Orange ROM on it like they used to do with all of their phones ? If so, how do I get rid of it and put on a standard Desire ROM ?
2) Assuming it does have just a standard Desire ROM, is it best to flash to one of the customized ROM's ?
3) Can I use my Desire as a wifi router via some software ? (MyWi and PDAnet on iPhone)
4) I've been reading about "rooting"....is that the equivalent of jailbreaking? What benefits does it have ? On an iPhone it is of course essential so that you can install Apps which apple don't approve of (amongst other things).
Thank you
I'm sure i'll have 100's more questions when I actually get it but that'll do for now. haha
1) Mild branding, Bot screen, some game demos I belive, and a frew orange apps.
2) Can't help you there
3) I don't belive you can untill Android 2.2 FroYo.
4) Can't help you here either
ok basically the guy above was of no help whatsoever..
1) the orange roms that first came out were packed with orange branding and apps and widgets which would take up space even on the home screens, with the new releases this has been greatly reduced. yes, you can simply flash a generic rom by HTC or one of the custom ones posted in these forums.
2) if it's from orange it wont have a standard htc rom, it is personal preference as to which rom you choose to install as some will have certain features which are more appealing to you. once you are rooted you can just sample around until you find one you like.
3) although this is confirmed to come out with the froyo 2.2 release, it is available on these forums, it comes with most customized roms, and in fact i believe it is even available in the android market.
4) rooting simply allows you to install roms which would usually be locked by your phone, this means that you can flash your phone with literally anything you want (at your own risk ) this also means that as well as roms, certain apps can use this root access in order to provide more features
1. I don't know. (I have no branding)
2. The default is good while IMHO the customised 2.1 roms are better.
3. A custom or rooted rom can have wifi tethering. (I use Oclocks rooted 1.21.405.2 rom)
4. I have never had an Iphone. But I think it's kinda the same. Rooting sets your android phone free (or in the desires case, A little more free) you will be able to install custom roms. New themes. Root only apps + more I can't remember.
I hope that helped

Its not quite the same,
Without rooting, you can still install what you like with Android.
Fon22
2) i would recommend MOdaCO R3.1 Until Offcial Release Of Froyo 2.2 For Desire , cause current port do have little bugs !
3) Yes U Can , if u ROOT Ur Device , there is an app that does what u want , and it's already included when u flash modaco R3.1 Rom
4) no rooting is not like Jailbreaking , an Android device is usable without rooting , but an iphone without jailbreaking is not !
About the jailbreaking/rooting thing you'll be pleasantly suprised with Android, a simple tick in one of the menus allows you to install anything you like and from any source you care to trust. You'll be treated like a grown-up actually, a nice addition is HTC's relative tolerance of rooting and flashing roms, as long as you don't try and port their proprietary Sense UI. Freedom awaits my friend.

You should, but only if the final isn't the same as the leaked one. You can also flash the final build once its released, manually.
You could just wait 1 day, too. I know it's killing you to get your hands on Froyo (it's killing me) but patience is a virtue. To be honest, I don't think it would have been as bad if Sprint didn't say we could initiate the update by downloading and installing it manually earlier. People have been hitting the "Check Now" button since last Friday (myself included). Why say that at all if you're not going to allow it?
BTW - your post title is very misleading... may want to change it to a question of some sort instead of statement implying what it isn't.
I highly doubt Sprint wouldn't allow the people that updated early to update again. That would be absolutely ridiculous. Either wait for the next update or for a root method on your current version.
So I'm wondering about this phone a friend offered to sell to me. It's a Samsung Taylor developer phone, so I have no idea which forum this goes into.
Will I be able to get software updates to the phone at all? Because right now the phone comes with the prototype ROM, so it can't record 720P. The camera is crap, some things like Facebook and Twitter don't work all the way. The marketplace isn't there. Its not stolen property because he is an independent developer and he says the phone served its purpose and he moved on to actual Win7 phones.
Any opinions? I asked my friend and he says he never tried looking for updated ROMs and he stopped using them after he got a focus.

connect it to zune and look for updates , there are beta updates for that phone (actually with a higher build number and copy/past) so I would say yes there are updates for .
I have a German Vodafone Optimus 7 that was used a couple of months by a software developer. I don't think it's running the latest (stable) build of WP7 however. When I check for updates with Zune it says that I'm up to date and the current version is: 7.0 (6536). Is this the latest version that every WP7 device is running? And if not, how come that my device doesn't get any updates?
Btw, Marketplace etc. just work fine on the device.

that is not a developer phone but a pre release , only the Samsung Taylor is a developer phone (and get beta updates )
you have to wait for the official update in 2011.

thanks , didn't know of the LG Panther .
ps, the latest official build is 7004.
In theory, the Taylor and Panther have updates to build 7003/7004, and they are available on the net (or if you ask the right friendly WP7 dev).
If you plug the device in to Zune, it should search for an update to 7003, though that might not happen.
73XX and above do also exist for the Taylor/Panther, but they're a lot harder to come by, and won't be coming out via Zune any time soon.
In theory, a dev device running 7003 will be able to do anything a release device running the same build (they wouldn't be much use as developer phones if they behaved differently) so I think updating the device should fix the issues you've got, though it'll never do 720p video, and the camera is terrible!
i dont think my friend's is even running the release. the market doesnt work and the live integration is blank. so if i have him get the update, basically i can upgrade it? awesome.

That sounds like an older build then, those are both working on the Taylor/Panther I've got.
Let me know if you need help finding an update.
I don´t know why but I have ROM 7006 installed on my Samsung Taylor, so diff packages from 7004 to 7008 won´t work. Asked lots of devs and MSFTies an no one seems to have ROM 7004 for the Taylor.
Any help?

Update is possible from rev. 7004 only, not from 7003 or 7006 (never heard about that revision).

I tried it with ROM 7006 and it also failed.
At what point is it failing?
Are you absolutely sure you're using the correct "ChevronWP7.Updater"?
The download link was pulled some time ago, so if you downloaded anything off of Chris's blog, it was the wrong updater.
Edit: I would post a link to the correct one, but all the mirrors were on megaupload...which is now gone

Actually, I'm not sure about Rudi Grobler's post. No proof screenshots (even photoshopped!), nothing at all but just words...
Second, search for deleted comments to his article: http://www.rudigrobler.net/display/Search?moduleId=12353177&searchQuery=Samsung+Taylor

So, it may be fake... I received Sammy Taylor at August, 2010 and installed all updates MS sent to registered developers/partners but never heard about Taylor on 7004.
In my case, it fails when applying the diff packages, since they are all 7004-7008, adn my rom is 7006.
I have try to find info about the links to 7006-7008 packages with no success so far.
I recently bought a DHD - wich I immediatly rooted - and I was going to subscribe the HTCsense.com service because I want to try the car panel*.
I red the terms and conditions of the service, but I didn't subscribe the service for the content of the article 10:
10. HTC Content; Proprietary Rights; License; Updates.
[...] HTC may from time to time send you updates to the Software which may be automatically downloaded and installed to your device. [...] You hereby agree that HTC may automatically deliver these updates to you and you will receive and install them on your device as required.
Could that mean that by subscribing this service you can be forced, willing or not (automatically downloaded and installed), to install HTC updates (with the obvious risk of losing root privileges)?
What do you think?
Thanks for your opinions
*My bad, to use the car panel it's not necessary to subscribe to htcsense.com, but i'm still curious about your opinions

sense.com cannot remove your superusser permission
and the updates are not for the rom concretly... are for the sense files and "sense.com privileges"
but i know that subscribe to sense hub... Literally the battery is drunk at a few hours...
is this that you are answering concretly?
I see your point. You're basically sayin that the HTCsense.com updates are solely intended as updates of just the apps/programs related to that service.
But I was wondering if the updates listed in the agreement could be more like an OTA ROM mandatory update wich could result to be more difficult or impossibile to root (I previously had a wildfire and I was so stupid to make the OTA update wich at the moment is rootable only with the goldcard).
Thus the risk to lose the SU privileges.
P.s. I have been in valencia in march for the fallas, I like your city a lot.

you has a WEE STOCK OFFICIAL RUU???? or a custom rom?
if you have a custom rom án oficial OTA it´s not going...
but if you have an stock rom you can decide if accept or not... all android versions for desire hd can be rooted but it´s more difficult when you upgrade....
i recommend to you for not lost superuser permissionss (root acces) that flash a custom rooted rom (froyo, gingerbread... judge by yourself)
if yo don´t want to update REJECT THE UPDATE VIA OTA simply.
htc sense actuallizations are unable to change your android version its diferent than update the ROM.

or at least it seems like it.
i downloaded the port over version the other day before all the "close this thread now" stuff. And i have loved it so far.
But, i just got a notification on my phone that said there was an update available, out of curiousity as to it being verizon or venom, i clicked download and it said the following.
"You using illegal copy of our ROM, to fix it apply update" and so forth and so on.
My question is the Venom rom now ready and they are just sending out an update to get up to their specs or is this update going to kill my phone. I have no problem taking this rom off and putting something on if this update was designed to kill the old version, just want to get some answers before i go in any directs.
was just struck off guard today with this development...

i don't think anybody would side with venom if they released an update that killed somebody's phone over a ported rom.

i agree, i was just trying to find out if anyone else had seen this and did the update to see what gives.
UPDATE: i tried to install the update and it fails every single time. not sure what it is supposed to do, but it fails. just thought i would shoot the update to everyone. i am fairly certain that i am not the only one.
thanks,
see if the ROM that we are using was ported from got an update.. since it's a port, it's likely the update is for sprint...
