Mini Case review of 5 popular cases - EVO 4G Accessories

I am not an official tech reviewer, just some dude with an EVO that has tried out several of the popular cases out there, and will offer my opinion for whatever that is worth.
- Body Glove; http://www.htcphones.net/body-glove-snap-on-case-for-htc-evo-4g/
Picked up the day I bought the EVO last Summer. Case looked bad ass in the package, but sucked balls, very cold and hard feeling next to the face, and cracks. Worst case
- Otterbox Impact; http://www.otterbox.com/HTC-EVO-Imp...-EVO4G_color=20&start=3&cgid=htc-evo-4g-cases
It feels great in the hand, and offered great protection, but was just too thick and bulky for my tastes, and sticky feeling, bad for pockets. Good case, just too big
- Otterbox Commuter; http://www.otterbox.com/HTC-EVO-Com...-EVO4G_color=20&start=2&cgid=htc-evo-4g-cases
Got as a gift, nice case, but too slick in the back, the hard plastic finish is too slippery, and again a little bulky for me. Ok case, just too slick and thick.
- Case-Mate Tough; http://www.case-mate.com/HTC-EVO-4G-Cases/Case-Mate-HTC-EVO-4G-Tough-Cases.asp
This case is very nice, two piece design, offers great protection. My little kids did the testing, and it works, sailing off the counter top onto the hardwood floor lots of times, with zero issues And the back rubber feel of it is soooooo nice in the hand, perfect grip. But again a little thick to be putting in jeans and soon shorts for Summer, will stick out too much, and scare the ladies. But this case is a keeper for riding my Mountain Bike, or going to carnival rides. Great case, keeping this.
- Incipio Edge; http://www.myincipio.com/HTC-EVO-4G-Cases-Accessories/Incipio-HTC-EVO-4G-EDGE-Hard-Shell-Case.asp
This is the slimmest of all cases I have had, and I actually like that a lot. I like thin phones, not bricks, and the other cases while nice, were just way too big, making the EVO feel much larger than it already is. The Edge is slim, nice color, and fits in pockets effortlessly. Great case, keeping this.
Out of all the cases I have tried, the "Edge" is my fav, with the Case-mate Tough a very close second. But I have not tried out the Seidio Innocase II yet, how is that ? http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/csr3hev4-wh.htm

You forgot to mention that the silicon for the Otterbox Commuter becomes loose like all other silicone cases and the thin part near the bottom face of the phone looks hideous after it becomes loose and there is no fix for it that I know of.
Each Otterbox case made for this phone has its own special problems and I think Otterbox rushed the design but yet the cases for the Iphone are flawless and look a hell of a lot better. I don't recommend Otterbox to anyone with and Evo at this point unless they change something.

Sure you can send it back for a new silicone piece but paying shipping every two or three months is not cool.

you are wrong about the shipping you dont pay one red cent. ive had several otterboxes for ever phone ive had and all ive ever had to do was make a 5 minute max phone call or an email and i get whatever i need in 2-3 days in the mail, Ive never had to send anything back. its so easy its ridicules. as a matter of fact i just called and told em i didn't like the defender case because the kick stand was just too thin(i agree with u on that point that kickstand is horrible thin as a reed) they sent me another defender to replace the broken stand and sent me a commuter case for free. All of this cost me nothing but the time to make the call.
Fact of the matter is if you want a serious case thats gonna give your phone maximum protection any case whether its otterbox ,titan, seido all of em r bulky when you want max protection. its a bit of a trade off as i see it, yea its bulky but my phone looks brand new indefinitely.

Check out trident cyclops, i've always been a big fan of them.

You are correct sir, for some reason unknown I was thinking about Zagg and they make you pay for a return. Just got off the phone with Otterbox and they are shipping me a new commuter case, took all of 5 minutes.

No review of Ballistic case?

which case do you use?

this has probably been asked before, but would like to see what everyone is carrying their evo in and maybe a little review?
me, I have the seidio innocase active. I do really like it because its deff very durable and built well, the only downside to it is its a little large, like when I take off the case, the phone actually feels too small.
Im waiting for the otterbox one, but that could be forever.
whatelse is everyone carrying?
I'm using the Seidio Innocase Active Case as well (Saphire Blue). I just received it yesterday and I think it's pretty nice. My only complaint is that the power button is much harder to use than without it. Other than that, I'd recommend it to anyone without a case. I've only had it for one night though so we'll see...
Case Mate Barely There case in black

Doesn't make the phone bulky but keeps the camera off the table and protects it from scratches and wear. Came with a screen protector as well.
I don't have a case, I just have the leather holster from Sprint. I almost always wear a belt, so it was a good solution for me. My only complaint is that it cost $30.
seidio's rugged ...if you dont want maximum protection, you can just use the innocase II, perfect everyday case.
Seidio Innocase Active - Pearl White
its looks amazing and it works really well
Casemate barely there.
Seidio Innocase Active Sage color
Seidio Innocase surface here , I have the holster that fits this case . Mainly due to the fact I like using the EVO for music when Im at the gym working out . But at work its usually sitting on the desk
case-mate barely there, however i notice it isn't protecting the edges around the screen and i have a dings on it as well. I am pretty much using it primarily to protect the camera, that's all the case is good for.

I've never seen that model before, looks pretty nice. I have the Otterbox now but until yesterday I was using the Body Glove from Sprint. I can tell you that after having that, it would take quite a lot to get me to buy one of their products again.
I'm using one of the ebay tpu cases, frosted one, before I had the sprint body glove and I liked it, but it broke easy, I like this 5 dollar tpu case, except for the power button, but I might go naked soon cause I ordered the kingston car mount and I think the honey moon period if over for me, I'll find a reason sooner or later too get it replaced and get a new one

gotcha. i have had zero issue with mine. It is rather grippy in the pocket, like a silicone but offers a lot more (IMHO) protection.
I did use the siedo active and it was nice but I'm ocd and that gap bothered me. I just got the otterbox today and love it and I think I'll be sticking with it.

Otterbox Defender v. Seidio Rugged

Picking up my Evo tomorrow just wondering what you guys think is the best case to get. I'm a mechanic so its gonna be abused.

Still waiting on mine but when I get it I wil let you know.
Ok. Thanks

I would go with the seidio if i had to pick between the two. I am a welder and the otterbox has absolutely no protection for the speaker or camera. I ordered the trident witch has screens to protect both the camera and the speaker...... I am on my 3rd speaker on my phone, it was poorly protected from the factory and collects anything magnetic really well. It also has more then a peel and stick protection for the screen.
just my 2cents

Nice thread to start. I have been wondering the same thing myself. From what I've read, it seems like the soft plastic on the Otterbox is thinner than it used to be. It's similar to the Seidio in that their port covers are now prone to being easily ripped off. The older Otterbox covers seemed to rip off less frequently.
I hate my Seidio Rugged. It's falling apart. I've ordered a Cyclops and will probably try out the Ballistic when it's released.
The Ballistic seems like it will be the toughest case made for Evo, especially since the Kraken will probably not be made.
I have both and prefer the otterbox much more.
CW
i just made this decision myself. Was deciding between the Otterbox Defender, Seidio Innocase Rugged with Holster, and the Ballistic HC (which should be released any day now). After much research and review, I decided on the Seidio, but actually going with the Best Buy version which is called the Platinum brand and its the Defense model. Same thing, but I can buy it tommorow and put it on my phone instead of ordering and having to wait. Plus, if something goes wrong, I can go back in the store and exchange it instead of having to ship it back.
The kickstand on the Defender is defective. Had mine for 3 days before it spontaneously crumbled. This is know issue and big problem.

My kickstand is just fine.
The kickstand on my Defender broke somehow while the case was in my pocket, hadn't even used it. The holster was an extremely sloppy fit,had to glue some felt pads in it so the phone wouldn't rattle around. Pulled the screen protector off as I was getting the oil spill effect on the screen. I guess you can fix that with baby powder but I don't need two protectors on the phone. After all this plus the 9 day debacle/wait to get the case shipped to me Otterbox waived all charges and freebied me the case. I'd have been POed to have paid more than $10-12 for it.
The Rugged case is ugly compared to the Defender but I think it offers more protection and the holster is much higher quality. The Exoskeleton at least on the earlier versions is the weak point as the corners break off. Seido's CS did approve my replacement request and shipped me a new case within 48 hrs and the skeleton is a slightly different design so I'll see if it holds up better.
I'm looking forward to the Ballistic case.
so Norwester, you think the Rugged is a better case then the Defender?
I also really like the Ballistic, and that was my first choice. I just dont like the way that the back of it looks in the new pics of it since its redesign...looked much better before...that and it IS gonna be big. It being so big didnt bother me at first, but now I'm rethinking it

Phone fits snug in mine, no slack at all. There are a few others with broken kickstands and others that are rough on them have no problem. I dont know what the issue is I dont believe they have any other revisions of the case out yet but if my kickstand does break you can bet your ass Im will be on the horn complaining about it, Not only did we have to wait more than a half of a year but as soon as it comes out there are a bunch of people having issues with it. I haven't had any issue and I got mine for free but this is suppose to be their toughest case that stands up to everything but water and people are reporting it doesnt even hold up to a pocket? Kinda crazy if you ask me but then again I am loving mine so far.
I went with Seidio, didn't know it came with the Innocase Surface too. That was a bonus, really liked my Surface on my Hero. Seems pretty durable I've pulled the case off my phone numerous times and no broken tabs. I really like the fact that the camera is completely covered. My only problem is the screen cover it came with has really bad glare, but that's not a big deal. All in all really pleased so far, I would definitely recommend it.

No glare on my otterbox screen (I did have to remove ther ZAGG protector) and the camera and led's are covered as well.
My Defender kinda sucked due to the faulty kickstand. I bought an Impact for $15 after discounts and I love it.
P.S. Otterbox promised me they would credit my card back within 2 days for the Defender. It has been a week and no credit so now I have to waste another half hour on hold to call and ***** about it. Pisses me off.

[Q] Otterbox Defender Series

Well I just ordered the Otterbox Defender Series for my EVO on amazon and I wanted to hear some some toughs. I know about the kickstand problem it has but that does not really bother me. I know the case is huge but that doesn't bother me either since the phone is huge by itself. So forum what are your thoughts on it?
How doe it feel? Does it really protect the phone? Any problems you have had?
I had one....the beltclip kept breaking...even though they replaced it for free it was rather annoying....so i bought a ballistic....had no issues yet
Sent from my PC36100
My honest thoughts? I'm sorry that you wasted $50. It is one of the worst quality cases that I have ever come across.
I liked the Otterbox.......dropped my phone from 4 feet onto my ceramic floor with no damage to the phone; though the holster and kickstand are horrible. But now I have the Ballistic HC.
I have 2 of them, one still in the box. I've never used either of them, I put one on my phone to see how it looked once and took it off and put my commuter back on. They do feel like they would protect the phone quite well but they just feel a bit cheaply made for the price they charge. For me, the commuter is the perfect case, I just wish they sold a holster/belt clip for it. I have heard the Sedio holster for the Active works with it, I just have a hard time paying $30 for just a holster.

It is, there's clear plastic (same material the screen protector is made of) over the camera lens and the LED flash
I have one and use it when im at work, I like it alot the camera lenses and flash are protected and the screen is protected at well. I had a similer case before with no screen protector but the rubber wore through and eventually the clip broke. The otterbox makes the phone considerably more bulky but I sincerely feel like I could drop kick the phone and it would be perfect so the bulk dosent really bother me. Its all about what you need the protection for everyones needs are different
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Well from what you guys have said it seams like its an okay case but its horrible compared to the ballistic. I currently don't have a case on my phone so at least he otterbox will protect it. Now what are the problems with the holster and belt clip? Does the belt clip break easily or what?
I can't personally speak for this case, but I have the commuter case and love it. easy to pull the case on and off but protects it well from the drops and what not it encounters on a daily basis at work. I also can't speak for the ballistic either, but i'll take a look at it now that you guys have mentioned it
The case does live up to the defender series name, theres only 2 issues I have with the case, the kickstand will brake for sure no if's our but's, and the silicone layer has to be constantly adjusted specially after charging. I don't know of any issues with the holster, I just see people complaining on how bulky it is. But that is preference, I like the holster and it seems very well built.

I had one, def was not too impressed especially how the kickstand had cracks the day after i bought it. Then there were cracks all around the front screen protector. So, i did a warranty claim got a new one and sold it. Picked up a cyclops and very happy with it. I am switching up to the Kraken tho because at my work we get em for $20 so i figured why not. I haven't had personal experience with the Ballistics case yet but if the kraken fails me i may try it.
I've never owned the Defender case for the Evo, but I did have one on an iPhone 3gs. That was a solid case, but the way it was held into the holster wasn't very reassuring. From what I've seen, the Defender for the Evo seems to have a similar problem. It's just not very secure in the holster.
I DO however currently own a Ballistic case, and WOW is it ever solid. It's also VERY securely held in the holster. The biggest downside is that it's very squared off, very bulky, and a little awkward to hold. That's why I put it in the case at work, but take it back out when I'm at home most of the time.
Defender cases are quite a bit more ergonomic, but that doesn't matter for crap if it's gonna fall out of the holster, IMO.

Like I said before I use mine at work only, I work for an ambulance company and my phone is subjected to some pretty intense probability for damage but I've had the defender on for like 4 weeks no problems at all and it hasn't fallen out of the holster once I did drop the phone about 5 feet into the snow and and it slid onto the pavement and the phone was totally uneffected I highly recommend the defender!

[Q] Incipio feather, is it REALLY durable?

i get the point that its to allow some protection while maintaining the form factor, BUT IS IT REALLY WORTH IT?! would i get similar performance from a case thats twice as big or would this just be a piece of crap if you dropped your phone (cause if i crack the screen on this phone ill be ass-out)?
If you want real protection you don't want the feather. At a minimum you want a Seidio surface (for minimum bulk) or active/ Otterbox case. If you want cheap, just go with a tpu from amazon. The problem with the Feather is it doesn't wrap around completely and therefor offers no protection for the screen or corners. That is a case worth bull-snot in my eyes.
In my experience, the thin'n'light cases are only for those who need a little bit of scratch protection (aka desk jockeys like me, but I work on cars and stuff so I need the durability).
If you want the ultimate durability, get an Otterbox Defender. They're bulky as hell, but extremely durable.
If you want good protection without nearly as much bulk go with an Otterbox Commuter like I'm running. No complaints so far, even after a few decent tumbles.

I work with cars too and I will never again use a snap on case. They shatter and send the phone flying in the air. I do like the look of the feather though. Maybe I'll try one down the line
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk
I bought a feather and liked it, not the most protection, but it was enough for my needs and I can't stand big cases. However, after 2 to 3 months, I started noticing small cracks around some of the corners and around the camera opening. They haven't effected the overall structure of the case yet, and I'll admit to taking the phone out of the case god only knows how many times to do battery pulls when I was hacking and flashing a lot of roms. I'm sure this contributed to the cracks, so I won't fault the case entirely.
If you want basic protection in a super small and light case, it's a good option. And for the $16 I paid for it (on ebay, and it included a screen protector) I'm really not too upset at the cracks, again, since I did put the thing through hell.
i broke a feather. that said it took the hit instead of the phone, but they're not all that durable.
i have the feather and it cracked in three places without ever being dropped. not cool. but they shipped me a new one under warranty without making me send mine back. yay. the only reason i got it was because my back cover was making creaking sounds in one corner and this case stopped that without adding bulk.

OtterBox Armor vs Seidio OBEX vs LifeProof Fre/Nuud

Just wanna see which case is the best and/or how you like yours if you have/had one. So please of youve had one of these cases or maybe all three(which is kind of pricey) could you share your thoughts on it. Really wanna get a tough waterproof case for my GS3.
It all depends on you. Armor is crush proof but from what I have read it has the worst sound and adds a lot of extra bulk. I have used LifeProof and it works with a bulk about that of the Defender and good sound. However the plastic clear back is very prone to scratching. Do not know much about the OBEX except that the phone had to be placed in the case just right to get decent sound quality and it is the only high dollar waterproof case with an optional holster.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk
Haven't used the otterbox but have the nuud right now and bought but sold the seidio. The obex was decently good but huge in all dimensions, and it is extremely picky about installing it. If you don't do it exactly right it will screw up your sound both receiving and sending voice. I love the lifeproof nuud, you can't beat no screen protector along with being waterproof. It's not nearly as bulky as the obex, the only con is the back will get scratched up eventually, it's clear plastic. Great thing is the rear is all soft touch rubber so it's really easy to hold and it has rubber feet so when you put it down it won't slide.
So yeah, between obex and nuud I'd say without a doubt nuud. Seems like if you want completely bombproof go otterbox but it's a lot bigger than the lifeproof.

There is an optional screen protector included with the nuud that is specifically cut to fit with the case. This can be helpful because if the screen protector ever scratches up badly enough you can remove it. However I do not know if you can buy them separately from LifeProof.

I am currently using the Lifeproof Nüüd on my SGS3. Been using it for a couple of months now and quite pleased with it. Good protection and it all seems good. I am often out in the bush and the risk of getting a wet phone is allways there. This one has kept my phone safe and has rescued it when I by accident has dropped it on concrete floors at work several times too. It do not build out much and the phone fits in the pocket of my jeans.
I have both the nuud and the otterbox. For me being in the cost guard I take the otter with me. When I'm home I go case less.

With that cane and with my obex I do not even look at the phone when dropping it on concrete. I just pick it up and snap it into the belt clip. I can't live without the belt clip and do not care how dorky someone may think I look.
The obex does have to be put on correctly or as mentioned you will suffer either on your end but more likely on the other end when someone is trying to hear you. Place the bottom of the phone in first and press there and toward the top until seated. I got used to the size long ago as I only keep it on the belt clip even if I am just wearing my skivvies. Plus, you can beat someone to death with it if needed.
