No swype on stock evo? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was told from sprint that I can get swype on stock evo but can't find it.... Anyone have an answer to where I can find this?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Long press on a text field, then hit input method. Swype should be one of the options.

Yeah I tried that but nothing happens, this is for wifes evo.. Shes not rooted and doesn't want to be. She only has one keyboard and that's why it won't show.... Is there a different method to put swype in? I tried giving her mine but she gets repeat force closes.... Hhmm, any ideas?

Is she on the latest OTA? Maybe you need to go into the settings and turn it on. I'm not on sense so I don't remember exactly where it is but if you hit menu and settings, it should be there under language and input if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, I tried that and that's when it started force closing, rebooted her phone and same thing... I unchecked and the force close stopped.... But when checked force close keeps popping up...

Did the FCs start after you tried to install your copy of Swype? Try clearing the data and cache for it.

Ah,,, ok, I'll try that once she gets off the phone....

Still no go... Any other ideas?

Have you already tried downloading and running the latest RUU?

Well, her phone is fresh out of box, did they add swype on a ota update?
.... And can you tell me what the latest pri, ruu, etc. is? Thanks so much....

They did add Swype in the latest OTA, check for updates, install, and you should be good to go.

[Q] cant update voicemail

Can't seem to update my voicemail, the icon and notification is annoying. I can clear it but it always comes back got a rooted evo on bakesnacks 1.8. Can anyone help.
are you trying to update to the vvm with the text thing.
Yes, don't really care for the update but but it would be nice, its saying a mandatory update is needed. I'm thinking its a Rom issue

they gotta be doing something with the market b/c i've ran into having bad updates lately since this afternoon today and currently start downloading one that just never finish's.
some things update fine and some dont. just leads me to believe theres something google is tweaking on there end as this is the kinda behavior we usually get when they do.

If you're having issues like that I would clear your android.secure folder on your sdcard.
Should resolve the issue.

[Q] Stop OTA?

Help, I rooted my phone and I don't want it installing updates. But I got this notification that it has downloaded a system update and will install it when there's enough power. So I'm going to keep my phone on low until I find a way to prevent it from installing. Any tips guys and gals?
Does anyone know what the update is? The development may like for you to extract it from your phone. Could help in future development.

I just had the same problem to what I did was let it try to install but it can't because u don't have stock recovery.so it will still try but it will freeze and just pull the battery out then turn the phone back on and it will load right into cwm then just restart your system from there and u will be good to go. Its fast and easy

If I am not mistaken we had an app on our Evo's called FOTa.apk, do a search for it in google and see what they say....I have it on my Xoom and it works fine
I am going to try shfub's method. I think he removed the .zip update file so the phone will have nothing to flash.
I don't know if it is permanent but I clicked on the notification, went to /cache, removed the .zip update file, went back to the notification, asked it to install, had it reboot to recovery and fail, and booted into android. It stopped bugging me and stopped trying to download after that.

Do the same thing, except this time, after the failed install, when you are back in Android, type in adb shell or terminal
su
pm disable com.samsung
Alternatively you could freeze System Updates in Titanium.

[Q] 2 problems: System Update and Swype

Sending from my phone.
Problem #1: I'm running RandomRom EI22 and I've done every step to prevent the System Update message, however it's still popping up. Definitely made sure I erased the systemupdate apk and everything else. What other methods are there to make it stop being such a nuisance?
Problem #2: I uninstalled regular Swype and installed the beta, ever since the original kept asking for a system update. After installing the beta, it worked fine. Now everytime I try, it keeps saying "Try again".

Do a search here on "FOTAKill.apk" - that was the only thing that helped me on both my phone and my wife's - but we are on Froyo so this might not work for you.
With that being said, all of what you tried has been suggested for Froyo users also, but didn't work - so give it a try. Sometimes the search on XDA doesn't seem to work well for me - so what I do is use Google, and in the search terms I type "XDA FOTAKill.apk"
You have to edit your build.prop to say 2.3.6 and EL30 in all places where it says EI22 and 2.3.5. Then reboot.

With Root Explorer. Edit build.prop in system directory.

EDIT: I did the trick of allowing it to do an update, then I let it reboot, it goes to the "Triangle !" mode, wiped Dalvik and rebooted, and so far, it hasn't popped up yet.
Now to fix Swype...

If it'll be back within a week, then does that mean that there's no way of getting rid of that update message?

I mentioned what has to be done before. Build.prop has to be edited.
Sorry, thought I mentioned that I did. My fault.
Yes, I did edit the build.prop file through Root Explorer, per your advice. Even after I did the final editing (missed a couple), the message still popped up. But, that's when I did the cache clearing and it didn't pop up again upon reboot.

Ok, that makes sense because the message was still in your phone's queue.

If you are on a MTD rom, someone in another thread suggested going back to regular swype. You can get the appropo files from the Starsky ROM, this is one of the few MTD roms that uses swype still, and the only files that I found work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242335
system/app/swype.apk
system/lib/swypecore.so
I pushed using Root Explorer and got mine working again
The 'Android Update to EL30' is not removed by uninstalling system updates.apk that apk is meant to provision your Epic to Sprint. The Update Notification is caused by the 'Google Framework' Service. There may be ways to fool it, such as the buildprop edit suggested.

[Q] SWYPE IME broken in 5.07.651.1 Stock ROM?

Hi, I wanted to post this in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671395
but can't since I'm a new user here. (longtime lurker)
Anyways,
After installing the 5.07.651.1 Stock Rooted ROM, the swype keyboard doesn't work anymore... it keeps getting Force Closes.
If I delete the Application Data for swype, it runs, but does nothing when swyping. Even the tutorial demo doesn't work right.
Going back to 4.67.651.3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455340
solves the problems. (I've tried 3 times)
Thanks,
Bob

Interesting. I thought I tested Swype and it worked okay when I moved it to /data. I'll look into this. It should be easily fixable.

I just did a completely fresh flash of that ROM, and installed nothing. I skipped through the Setup wizard, and when I got to the Home screen, I pressed the Search button, and changed input methods to Swype. It popped up and works fine. I'm even doing the tutorial right now, which is also working fine.
Did you confirm you got a good download by verifying the md5? Did you install anything else that may have interfered with Swype, or uninstall anything? Did you try installing the Swype Beta over the original Swype in the ROM?
All I know is that it works fine out of the box. I can post a few screenshots, if you'd like.

OK. I'm not sure what's wrong with mine then.
I didn't check the MD5 but I assume that the ZIP CRC would have failed if the file was corrupt.
I didn't try the swype beta.
I have Google Pinyin installed, which is another IME, but it's always worked fine.
Thanks,
Bob

If you want to try it again, I would get a fresh download, and before setting anything up, try to use Swype.
If it doesn't work then, I'll look into it further.
