Here is the easiest method (in my opinion) to root the Hero and load a custom ROM, theme, etc.... there is a video for noobs as well
Thanks to Cyanogen for his recovery image!
Thanks to MoDaCo for his great custom ROM!
Thanks to Zinx for FlashRec APK (thanks Amon Ra for letting me know who made it! http://zenthought.org/content/project/flashrec)

Cool... theunlockr.com seems an interesting resource.
Has anyone here tried these methods and had no issues ?
And, why do you need to format your SD card ??? Or is this a typo ??
Surely just putting the files at root level on the card is all you need to do as per the video...
Seems a very easy way to root though
Also, lastly, do you need to root to flash new Firmware ? I thought you just needed to install a recovery image permanently as per MoDaCo Paul's instructions.
I WILL get my head around this one day
Hello JoeMax,
1. Works just fine on the out of box Hero, done it to mine multiple times over.
2. Formatting is just a precaution, not necessary, but recommended and only take a few seconds anyway.
3. The Rooting video here is essentially using FlashRec to do MoDaCo's procedure to permanently flash the recovery image (and gives you a back up for your original recovery image). Then on the next video when you load MoDaCo's custom ROM using the newly flashed recovery image is when you will have root access for applications.
The recovery image he provides doesn't give you root access for applications but it does allow us to load a custom ROM with root access for applications. Make sense kinda?
Good luck! Hope it helps!
Ah, yes, I think it makes sense now.
And thanks again for making it easy for us slow people I need not visit Terminal and enter arcane scripture to allow me to keep my Hero up to date.
Hats off to you
OH, and this applies to loading new Radio firmware too - i.e. you substitute the ROM steps with Radio firmware ?
Excellent - nice one for posting this. I have the usual couple of questions.
1) - Will doing this still allow me to update with the official ROM release.
2) What do I need to do to be able to go back to how I have it now ( out of box with my personal data ). Wiping all data is scary.
3) - I've read elsewhere that you need to partition your SD disk - is this true, and if so can I do that on my computer ( and if so what kind of format )
Like Joemax, I'm on a Mac and am not to terminal savy
Great video tutorials - thank you for those.
Please make a video tutorial on how to format your SD card to ext3/ext4, including setting it up for Linux caching, and all that jazz. Thank you!
It just can't get any better or easier than this..
Great tutorial!
Are there any disadvantages to using this method of rooting?
This is what I want to know, are there issues with Market access ? I keep reading of people rooting and then loosing the ability access Market.
Also, if I update ROMS will this remove apps and settings ?
As I understand it, all the firmware and OS are in flash memory whereas apps and user data / settings are in SDRAM and is completely separate.

No issues with Market access (but you might need to put your APN settings back in of course).
When you update a ROM it is recommended to do a Data Wipe first, and that will erase your apps and settings. But you can get your apps back when you sign into your Google account and just goto My Downloads (then just download them again).
OK, thanks again David
Well, I better get som help with this, and by that I mean my problems.
Yesterday I tried this 'How to' and I as I described at theUnlockr.com, the result was a hero in a looping boot. It keeps rebooting after the screen saying 'htc' and some green doodles (animation) waving.
It keeps doing the loop and stops only when battery is removed. As soon battery is installed it starts op doing the loop thing.
There was no problems or warning doing the 'how to' and that goes for the rooting 'how to' as well.
When I debug the looping allot of errors and warnings are showing, obviously.
SDcard is 8Gb class6, partitioned in fat32, ext3 (533Mb) and swap(77Mb).
So I´m asking for help to unddo or replace the rom or whatever one do in a case like this. What can I do?
This is not a critical view on theunlockr.com - it is my fault somehow, but I need some help or guide line to recover from this situation. And yes, I´m new to Android world but I like it.
Sorry for english, I am not from around 'here'.
Well, I guess I don´t need the help after all.
I came to the assumption that the sd card, the partitions, might be corrupted some how, so I replaced it with the original sd card and before that I copied the content from the fat32 partition on the corrupted card to the original.
I then booted and wiped it and installed the update.zip again, and everything is almost back to normal.
I´m one happy dude now.
not working for me... put the files on the sdcard as mentioned. Run the .apk file and install it, so far so good. After opening it, the "Flash cyanogen Recovery 1.4" is greyed out.. ok, dont need it anyway.. hit "Backup Recovery Image" and wait... hero is working and after some time it says "backup failed". Also after typing "sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img" the button "Flash Custom RecoveryImage" also remains greyed out...
I have a European black Hero (unbranded).
Can some one answer this simple question for me please,
I'v rooted and installed Modacos newest rom, I havn't got any partitioning tools in the Recovery menu, I realised that I used Recovery image 1.0
The question is, can I use the first video method to root and install Recovery image 1.31 or do I have to unroot and then root it again using Recovery image 1.31?
Hi,
I've got a UK hero on vodafone. I've done the first part of this and done a nandroid backup.
Before I do the custom ROM I have a couple of questions....
I keep seeing mention of a radio.zip - do I need this? what is it?
I assume I will need to make a paper backup of my APN settings?
Thanks for any info. I want to take the next step but I dont want to trash my new shiny thing!!
Cheers
Bryan
would this work for the CDMA Hero. I would like to root the phone and load custom roms that would enable me to save apps to the SD card.
Hey guys, Thanks ahead of time for the help.
Like I said I'm probably beating a dead horse here but I'd appreciate a shove in the right direction.
I just Rooted my phone using simple root and I was looking to install a custom rom when I realized....
I have no idea how or what I'm doing.
APK?
ADB?
NAND?
all things I dont understand.
And while I did understand you can un-root your phone I never did think to look into how before I rooted my phone <not that I can imagine wanting to> Especially since many of my buddys work at a service and repair store and if my phone ever does need service, its no problem.
so while im not to worried about un-rooting at the moment if you feel like giving me some info I wont argue! haha
more importantly tho, What do I need to know about installing custom roms/themes etc and does anyone know how to get some free wifi tether going on?
downloaded free wifi tether from android market but it doesnt work for whatever reason.
Thank you and please forgive my ignorance, you guys are on a whole other level.
tried to install and use Rom Manager but got "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
any idea's? cant fix permissions threw app either, gives the same error

That sounds like you don't have root permissions. Do you have a superuser app in the system drawer? If you don't then you probably don't have root access.
I am away from my pc right now but when I get back I will post a link to a guide that webs05 wrote will help explain a lot.

Thats kind of the impression that I got, yet a couple of the Root only programs I'm using are working.
If thats the case its easy enough to redo if i lost root somehow but atm I dont know how to revert it back haha, ugh I hate being a newbie!
look forward to your later post, ty.
it does sound like you are rooted but you are getting a error trying to use clockwork is the img that is used in simple root does not allow superuser access for some reason... More than likely
ok my first question is can you boot into recovery? You do that by turning the phone off and, once it is off holding Vol Down and the power button. You should be able to hit the down arrow once and hit the power button to boot into recovery.
You should be able to do this just fine. This is where you will flash ROM's. You can do this with clockwork, but you need to flash their recovery image. I personally prefer look up ROM's here to see what's going on with them and flash them that way but the choice is yours.
You do need to find a ROM that you like and you need to flash it either with your recovery or from ROM manager.
This guide should answer a lot of your questions. If that helps thank Webs05 he gathered up the info and put it in one place any other questions feel free to ask.

What steps exactly did you do?
Only the ones in the simpleroot post where you click through the 4 buttons for each step?
If so, you should be rooted, but you have to load a ROM to continue. If so, follow these steps here for the basic stock rooted ROM:

Were you able to boot into recovery?
Sent via the Sprint HTC EVO
Yes, I am able to get it into recover, Power+ volume down and then recovery and then I can hold power and volume up for an options menu...If I recall, did this the other night, cant remember why.
Its starting to sound like your rooting process did not complete. Right after hitting power and vol down then selecting recovery you should see some options i.e. backup/restore, flash zip from SD card, wipe... If you see those download a ROM and put it on your SD card. Go back to recovery select wipe and you need to wipe dalvik cache, cache, and factory settings ( can't remember what exactly its called) then return to the previous menu and select flash zip. From there its pretty self explanatory. If you can't see anything I just said it sounds like you need to try rooting from the beginning again. Hope that helps.

I actually Am able to get to this part now, And I am able to use wireless tether app now so I presume i'm rooted correctly
ooooow, and I just flashed a ROM to it, so now I understand how I did that, what If i want to change roms or loading screen etc? ugh! lol

good to hear!
If you want to change ROM's remember to always do a Nandroid backup first. That way if it messes up you have a place to start over. Whenever you are switching to a new ROM it usually helps if you wipe. Sometimes you don't need to but if you get stuck in a boot loop that means you should have

Same Problem
I'm having the same problem regarding the privileged commands error. I just tried your advice with the power off and then power on while holding the volume down button. That definitely booted into ClockworkMod Recovery. I'm now at the point where I have a series of options. Which should I use?
- reboot system now
- apply sdcard:update.zip
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- nandroid
- partition menu
- advanced
- +++++Go Back+++++
EDIT: Just read previous responses more carefully. I guess maybe I need to rewipe tonight. I thought I didn't want to install a rom until I'm able to flash clockworkmod recovery. I'll take any additional advice not listed here.

If you are able to boot into recovery then you should be able to flash a custom ROM. If I am correct you probably used the simple root method. The img that you flashed at the end of that does not allow superuser access for some reason. You need to flash a custom rom.
If it shows clockwork at the top when you are in recovery then you should be able to flash a new ROM from ROM manager or you can just place the ROM on the root of the sd card and select install zip from sd card. Just make sure to wipe.
Hope that helps.
First off, thanks for all the help so far, this site is the best!
I just rooted my Evo using the unrevoked3. Had a little bit of trouble, nothing major, and overall it was a success. I also installed ROM Manager and Titanium Backup, based on suggestions found here.
The problem is, I'm not quite getting how to flash the roms... I downloaded one through ROM manager, and it seemed to work, but I didn't notice a single thing different. I tried to install CyanogenMod, and it downloaded, but it would always fail during the install.
I tried downloading on my computer, then moving the .zip file to my sdcard. Then I select "install rom from sdcard" and everything seems to go ok, I end up having to go into recovery and "rollback" my phone to the stock rom, because twice now I've almost bricked my phone.
Really, what I'm wanting is a setup like that "Kuma Style" one (without the animal), and a different bootscreen. I have spent a lot of time searching around, and it seems simple enough, I just seem to be missing some integral part of the proccess.....
Any help is appreciated!

I am not familiar with Unrevoked, but just running unrevoked doesn't completely root your phone. You need to do the second parts of rooting which unlocks nand.
Ah, so there is more to do. Maybe that's the problem then.... *off in search of how to unlock nand

Unlocking nand just unlocks something so that you can save full image backups. That wouldn't lead to your phone not installing a ROM right, it's just something you'll want just in case things go wrong. So still finish the root and get nand. But that's not what you're missing here.
Possible error: Did you wipe settings &factory reset and wipe cache in ClockworkMod before flashing the ROM? I think that could lead to some problems.
Try flashing the alternative Amon Ra recovery through rom manager (will state that rom manager won't be fully functional unless clockworkmod is installed) and loading the roms onto the sd card then reboot into recovery. Amon Ra seems to work better imo than clockworkmod. When you're talking about something like "kuma style," those are themes that are usually flashable in recovery also. The boot animation could alse be flashable in recovery but if not, there are instructions on how to adb push custom ones onto your phone.

Gah! So I downloaded the enamored theme, moved it to the sd card, then went to ROM Manager and selected "Reboot into Recovery"and selected the enamored.zip. It said the install was a success, but when I rebooted, the phone stuck on the bootanimation. I tried restarting a couple times, but it always gets stuck in the same place.
I booted into recovery (if thats waht you call the hold the volume button down while pushing the power button trick), and selected recover, then nandroid, then a time under yesterdays date. Phone recovered fine.
WtH am I doing wrong? I realize I am way out of my league, but I'm not completely retarded. Again, GAH!

When you flash a theme, it could take up to 2-5 minutes to finish. This occurs during the boot animation. I flash themes all the time and I notice it's usually around 2-3 minutes wait. Maybe faster for others but that's just been my experience. If it's over 5 minutes than there's probably something wrong with your zip file or maybe clockworkmod recovery doesn't flash it properly. Also, it could be an issue with the kernel you're using...I noticed on kingklick cfs #10, I was stuck on boot animation for about 7 minutes and so I reverted back to the stock kernel and the theme was applied within 3 minutes.
ok, apparently I've been missing that step...
where do I do that again?

I waited a good long time. Am I at least headed in the right direction? Sorry to sound whiny, it's just that there's a few little things I want to do, and I'm intimidated as hell by actually doing any command line, so I'm hoping to avoid that- aka riding someone else's coattails
First, which rom are you using and is it stock or custom kernel? Are you using clockworkmod recovery? Try flashing the alternative amon ra recovery in rom manager then boot into recovery and apply your selected theme.
if you are using a stock rom it must say stock 2.2 deodexed
if it is not a deodexed rom.. of any kind.. then themes will say they flashed but they will either brick your phone or not work at all.
and stop using clockwork.... just use amon ra

I could be way off here, but I've seen some people who rooted using unrevoked, and run into trouble flashing things (or maybe I'm thinking of trouble with terminal commands) and it turned out they couldn't find flash_image anywhere in there SD card, Which should be installed (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
I saw a lot of reports of this in chainsDDs superuser thread, if I remember correctly. They had to install flash_image.img (which is a file available on toasts part 2 root tutorial)
I obviously could be wrong about this, I've never used unrevoked, I rooted via toast, and his method included everything.
@ V_lestat
Thanks for the heads up about themes having the ability to brick your phone if not deodexed, I never knew that. I flash roms and kernels a lotbut never messed with themes much.
At OP, have a look at virus Rom thread. It's a great ROM, and he has built some different themes to go with it. Beautiful stuff, great ROM, great thread.
Good luck

See, some people say use clockwork, some people say Amon.
I looked around a lot beforehand, and people kept saying to use unrevoked, so I did. Now people say I should have used Toast?
Thanks for everybodies help so far, I am reading everything and taking it all in.
I Don't Mean to add any Confusion to your situation. I am new to this also.. I went with unrevoked also and when I booted into recovery with clockwork mod. I did a nand back up first to make sure if anything went wrong I could just boot back into recovery and load my backup. Then I wiped my Data & Davlick Cache all of the caches. Then I installed my Rom and it worked like a charm. I will add it did take about 5 to 7 mins to boot only on the first time though. I hope that helps some as to the process and what to do first don't give up XDA rocks with the smartest mind on the planet.

If you are using ROM Manager to "install zip from card" it presents you with a dialog with two unchecked check boxes. One of them is "wipe data + cache". make sure you check it before hitting ok on that dialog.
If you are manually booting into recovery then in the recovery choices you will see one that says wipe data and one thats says wipe davlik cache. first do a nandroid back up then wipe those data and davlik then install the rom. By the way are you just installing a theme or a full rom that might be the issue i am just wondering maybe a senior member can help on wether you can install a theme over a rooted stock theme or not?
Success!
I went into ROM Manager, backed up current ROM, went into recovery manually, wiped the cache, then installed from zip, and it worked! I tried a cool theme I found, and I like it, but it seemed old. I just installed fresh, and the enamored theme, and all is working great!
A couple more questions,
1) how do I get my contacts back?
2) How do I get my apps back onto my phone? I have them backed up on appbrain, but I haven't been able to find how to get them back to the phone.
So far, I've tried a couple of ROM's (and/or themes) and I've ended up flashing back to my own "safe" one, until I figure these two things out.
A tremendous thanks to everyones help! I seriously couldn't have done it without you guys
Edit; Oh yeah, one other thing. How do I delete the other nand backups? There's like 5, and I need to free up some memory. I tried going in and selecting one to see if it gave me the option to delete, but I didn't see anywhere that it did.... Got it. Search feature to the rescue

Are you running the latest clockworkmod? No clue if it makes a difference, but an idea.
ummm....I think so?.....I guess I dont know for sure.....link maybe?....
Download Rom Manager from the market or make sure its updated if you already have it installed.
Open Rom Manager and hit "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Then try again.
Try the 0120 gb gapps, some people have had issues with the latest 0307 ones.
ok....so i reinstalled 6.0 cm and now want to go to 7.....so clockworkmod recovey.....then wipe etc....then 7.0 from sd card.....and then gapps?....what i find weird is that 6.0cm has a yellow status bar that goes across screen when installing, and neither of the 7.0 rc and rc2 have this, and neither will install.......make sense?,,ty

Ok, so i bought the Evo 4g from some lil shop that flashed it to cricket for me right then and there. Everything is great except i just realized i can't get voicemail and i can't send/recieve pic/video messages.
I had someone try and root my phone to put Myns Warm 2.2 on, but he told me something about unrevoked not working b/c i had updated my phone earlier that day.
Questions:
*Has unrevoked found a way for me to root my phone?
*Will rooting and what not to get Myns Warm 2.2(or whichever is the most popular rom now) fix me getting voicemail and the ability to text pic/video messages?
*Is it true 4g and hotspots will work for me once i do it even though i am on Cricket?
*Is all of this easy enough to do on my own?
*How was your day?
Go to Hboot and check if you have S-Off. Get there by turning off your phone, and then holding the volume down and power buttons. It will say S-On or S-Off at the top.
If it says S-Off, go to my signature and get AmonRa. Use the PC36IMG.zip method and follow the OP's instructions. This gives you a custom recovery to flash ROMs in.
If it says S-On and have Hboot 2.16, you will have to use the Revolutionary method. If it says S-On and has a lower-number bootloader, use Unrevoked. Then flash AmonRa
And download an app called "Wireless Tether" to get a free hotspot. Once you are rooted

for the voicemail question:
Your typical rom designed for the EVO assumes you have Sprint's visual voicemail and that you are a Sprint customer. As such, there is no traditional voicemail app like you would find on other devices that don't have Sprint's visual voicemail.
You might be able to install the voicemail application from another device like the Incredible, I believe standard voicemail used to work properly back when I ported an Incredible rom to the EVO.
Your easiest fix is going to be to sign up for Google Voice, install the GV app on your phone, and then set the "no answer forward" on your line to your GV number. This will route your unanswered calls to GV instead of the Cricket VM. Now you're using GV for voicemail and have visual voicemail sort of like you would with Sprint, but better actually.

I tried google voice b4, didn't work. Either way, i am still interested in a shiny new ROM. =)

If it says S-On and have Hboot 2.16, you will have to use the Revolutionary method. If it says S-On and has a lower-number bootloader, use Unrevoked. Then flash AmonRa

What is the revolutionary method? And is AmonRa the newest, most popular rom around right now?

Revolutionary is the only root method for 2.3 / Gingerbread / Hboot 2.16. Look in the development section for a tutorial which contains all of the links.
AmonRa is a custom recovery, allowing you to flash custom ROMs and kernels. It is not an actual ROM

Hey, thanks a lot brit. I'll let you know when i start and see if it works. Hopefully all goes good as i'm unemployed and broke so i can't afford another phone.
Anyway, one small problem. Ever since i went to that screen by pressing the down button and power button, i've been having problems with my phone. I noticed this morning it was turned off. I assumed it was b/c the phone lost power(i never turn my phone off). Not the case, when i turned it on, it was charged. Then while i was getting something to eat, i look at my phone and notice it was off again! So i turn it on and this time it goes to that loader screen. Turned off and turned it on. Now it's back off again. What's going on?? Did i press something i shouldn't have when i was on that screen last night??
Going into bootloader should not cause those kinds of issued. If you are not rooted, I would suggest a factory reset in "privacy" section of settings I think. If it is not there, look in other setting options. Then after you factory reset the phone, turn off "fastboot" in "power" section of settings.
When fastboot is on, the phone never truly "powers off" (unless you pull the battery) because it saves the session in a low-powet state

Sorry, I don't know anything most of anything about Cricket, I'm still on Sprint haha
Myn's Warm 2.2 is a bit old (last updated early this year) but still has a following. Myn has moved to Synergy. It is a good ROM, I like it, but it simply isn't for me. I prefer r3chargeD.
Before you go ahead and flash a ROM, what size is your SD card? I suggest partitioning your SD card before you flash any ROMs. I can walk you through it
I have an 8gb SD card, i did the backup already(is that what you are referring to?). I am in the process of installing [Kings-Rom]Kinged SHOOTER E3D[sesnse3.0] Is this okay?
Awesome, everything worked out great! Thanks for all the help! I love this ROM although it's my first so i don't know how much i'll like the others! In order to try a new one, do i have to remove this current ROM? Or do i just wipe everything and install the new one again?
***Damn....i still cant get voicemail and i still can't send/recieve picture/video messages
Try miui!

How to partition SD card: (helps alleviate the phone, stores data on the sd card) (PARTITIONING WILL DELETE EVERYTHING OFF YOUR CARD SO BACK UP EVERYTHING TO YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE)
Back up everything on your SD card to your computer.
Boot into AmonRa.
Select "Partition SD Card". You will be prompted to set an amount for Swap and ext2. The rest of the card will be FAT32, which is normal storage space for everything else.
Select 512 megabytes for swap
Select 1024 or 2048 for ext2 and the rest for FAT
After process finishes, select "Upgrade ext2 to ext3".
After process finishes, DO NOT CHOOSE TO UPGRADE TO ext4. Do NOT do it. DO NOT DO IT
Go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING there. Three times.
From main menu, select USB-MS and copy your files back to your SD card. You don't have to transfer files like android.secure and Android and temporary files, only what you need.
Do a fresh install of Shooter ROM.
Reboot.
Initial boot will take a while. Let it be.
Once everything is booted up, do setup and reboot.
Download apps from the Market. I highly recommend a fresh install, not restoring from Titanium Backup or anything of the sort.
Then check this thread here, a guide made specifically for Shooter but should work on other ROMs too.
How to flash other ROMs, all you have to do is go back into recovery, wipe everything except for SD card 3x and flash ROM of choice, just like I described last time!
Try YouMail for Voicemail or Google Voice again once you do the APN thing
Just follow the lead in the thread:

AmonRA is the best recovery i've ever used, other recovery somehow works with more or less problems on my device. The newest version is 2.3. After hecked to s-off and rooted, just put the zip file(PC36IMG.zip) on the root directory of your sd Card, then reboot to hiboot, there will be hint for you to install the recovery.
After that, flash roms in the development sector to have better using experience. I'm now using shooter3D.
I'm a noob too, just keep learning in xda, there will be more fun!
Hope i did some help.;)
