Yeah, I know the thread title is a mouthful, but hear me out.
I've been running CM7 since the first nightlies, and have enjoyed it a lot. However, right now my only option for internet is through USB tethering/wireless hotspot.
The other night, after my Netflix kept stopping due to slow internet issues, I decided to try an experiment. I ran speedtest on CM7 with many different servers (LA, Chula Vista, San Diego, Phoenix) and saw that I topped out around 500kbps. So I flashed Myn's 2.2 and ran speedtest with the same servers and averaged out between 800 and 1300kbps each time.
I know that a lot of people have 3G speed issues with AOSP roms, but today as I was searching around for roms to try, I installed SalvageMod. The first thing I did was run speedtest, and ended up averaging around the same as I did with Myn's.
My question is, being an AOSP Gingerbread rom, why am I still getting Sense-like 3G speeds with Salvage, when I still can't top 600k with CM7?
A little irrelevant but just starting today, my 3g speeds are like 200kps which pisses me off since I just used to get 1.5 mbps. Using cm7. Ill try flashing myns when I get the chance but first I'm gonna keep tweaking cm7 until I'm outta options
Edit: nvm its gone now
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.

You must do this with a Sense based ROM first. Do this update then flash your nandroid of CM7.

See if this increases your speed. It works for many.

Thanks. Did that when I had Warm 2.2 installed. Could explain the speed increase in Salvage.

I was going to do this, but my understanding was the moment u flash another rom it undoes this, unless that is just from flashing another sense rom?
Right off that post "-All credit to original finder of this fix, i am just passing it along and found the speed increase. Also when you flash a new rom it will back to old settings so remember to re-apply and it wont make you more vulnerable to anything."

Hey guys. I was hoping some of you ROM flashing freaks can help me out here. After a month or so of having full root I finally decided to d/l Rom Manager (what an awesome app...major kudos to the dev!) and the first thing I did was try out the famous CM6 rom.
First off let me admit to the fact that I don't think I gave it a fair shot...mb I was scared by the lack of Sense that I have grown so used to, but after a very short while I reverted to my backup of the stock rom. Besides the lack of familiarity with a non-Sense ROM I was also turned off by the lack of 4G and the small things that people on the CM6 thread were complaining about such as notifications for text and emails not showing up on the status bar. I also saw a handful of people complaining about excessive battery drain. Anyway, I stray from my point. I'm sure CM6 is an awesome ROM, I mean thousands of people swear by it, so there must be something to it...just right now I need some Sense.
On that note it seems to me that the most popular Sense rom is Myn's. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this. What I really don't understand is this: What makes Myn's ROM or any of the other Sense rom better than stock? I would really like to hear from MYN users (and other sense rom users) and tell me why you prefer your ROM over stock.
Thanks in advance for any useful feedback!
I use Myn's ROM and CM6.1 (the latter right now).
The most cited thing about Myn's ROM that people like is the theming. Myn is also really on it with the updates, and he includes new features with every release.
Just nandroid and flash it. If you like Sense, you can't go wrong. Also, definitely give CM6 another go sometime in the future. It's great.

Hey Sock, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I think I def didn't give a CM6 a fair try. I think I just got scared off by the unfamiliar territory. One thing I did notice when I had it running was that my reception wasn't very good. I only had 2 bars in an area that I usually have full or close to full bars. Oddly though, it was working fine and was d/l content from the market at around the same speed as when I was on stock.
CM6 uses a different code for signal reception than sense roms (less bars). Even though it appears different, there are no differences in data speed. Those bars u see are for data strength btw

Yeah, that's something to get used to with AOSP. I like Sense and CM pretty similarly, so I nandroid back and forth pretty often.

Ive been using myns roms for quite a while now, all 3 of his warm 2.2 releases. I highly suggest you give it a try. The theme is silky smooth, all sense widgets work, myn has put his magic touch into it so it runs smoother and snappier than stock, he is ON TOP of updating his Roms, and always adds new features and little touches to it. Plus there are all sorts of options for customizing to your liking. I also get much better battery life than stock. Check it out good sir.

While I don't run Myn's (running MIUI), the reason I started flashing custom ROMs was to get rid of the Sprint bloat that the stock ROM had. After each restart I would see a Nascar app and a whole lot of other **** running that I couldn't care less about. Also now I can use setcpu to underclock my phone at times (screen off and etc) to help save my battery as well. Seeing much longer battery life now.
I have used Myn's, CM, MIUI, Calks, Fresh, DC, etc. Right now I am back on the newest stock release. I was kind of missing the stock appearance and I found that a couple tweaks I like wouldn't work on the other roms. Plus, I can get rid of all excess and unwanted apps using titanium or root explorer. Finally, my battery life is phenomenal so I think I'll stick with stock for a while. However, of the custom sense roms, I think the ones I have tried were all great. DC is very slow to update while myn is very fast and regular with his. Myn is great if you want a themed rom, if not I say try calk or fresh, Ava's rom is pretty sweet too. I guess what it comes down to is do a nandroid backup and start flashing away til you find one you like.

in my opinion myn's rom is very fast runs great and has the evo hotspot so you dont have to shell out an extra 30 a month it has 4g and is very stable. plus you get huge battery savings plus all other shell options and dev stuff that i kinda understand but dont want to sound stupid trying to explain.. i really cant wait for the next myn rom to come out it looks awesome and works even better, but i got my stock battery with heavy use from about 4 hours to almost 10 hours, but its all in personal choice. hope my input helped a little..
try su file manager & terminal from the market and if you dont have busybox get it from market and you can remove any file you want you just have to mount as read-write

Quick question, hopefully i'm not being redundant at all
1. For EVO users who switched to Cyanogen, Do you miss 4g? I know they're working on it now, and it will be out soon, but I'm thinking of switching from my rooted stock rom to CM6.1.1 and that way I atleast have a nand of CM before the new version hits.
I AM in a 4g coverage area, and I usually get 5-9 Mbps with 4g and only around 1Mpbs with 3g.
2. Also, Why do so many people switch to Cyanogen? I use Launcherpro, and it's pretty snappy, and with root I have wireless tether, I'm running a theme, and you really can't even tell it's sense. Am I losing speed by having sense running in the background? I guess I'm just looking for someone to help me justify the move to CM, haha.
3. Also, Do i NEED to do a full wipe before installing rom? Or is it not absolutely necessary?
Thanks to any replies in advance!
CyanogenMOD (AOSP) is a completely different level of performance than any Sense-based ROM can offer. You can install LauncherPRO as your launcher in CM just for familiarity.
I do miss 4G with CM occasioncally, but it's not a dealbreaker. I'll go without 4G to stay with CM (which should come to an end hopefully very soon).
OOO thanks for the reply, Do I need to do a full wipe before installing?? Or is it okay if I don't?
No because my area doesn't have 4G yet. Maybe when I go out of town next week and am in a 4G coverage area I will, but I will flash the nightlies to see if it is implemented and if I really want to use it, I will flash a sense rom.

Yes, you need to do a full wipe: Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache. Also, you need to make sure you have downloaded and flash GApps, otherwise you'll have no market.
Nope, don't miss it at all, especially since we don't have 4G in San Diego yet, although I do travel to a lot of 4G cities for work. Also, 4G is now working on CM...it just hasn't been integrated into the nightlies yet because they are still smoothing out all the kinks.
Don't miss 4g, but like you I really don't see a real reason to have switched...I just like changing roms. I don't see much of a difference in performance between cm and fresh, BUT one thing I do like is that it has a much smaller footprint. I gained about 50mb by switching to cm.

you only have to download titanium backup from the market and run restore from there. I recommend the pro version though
won't have to miss it for much longer...already in the works
I know I can't wait!!!
CM has a lot of small tweaks that just make the experience better. Like the lockscreen gestures for example, or the notification bar power controls. Plus since its AOSP, tweaks and themes from other phones are far more likely to work, and things like changing your phone's lcd density look much better. And getting the latest android updates months before they're released by htc is pretty nice too.
Posted by my rooted EVO 4G
No, because WiMax is now finished, and just getting polished right now. By the time the Gingerbread nightlies start rolling out, so will WiMax support.
I like CM but no 4G is a deal breaker. I use my Sling Box for sports and 3G + sling-box = sucks. I gotta have me some 4G.
I mostly use 4g just for browsing the internet and updating my Feedr...
So MOST of the time I don't need 4g, when I look at youtube, or somethign like that, it IS nice....
AHH I can't decide whether I want it or not! haha
What many people don't realize is that, while WiMAX (a.k.a. 4G) is often faster than 3G in file transfers, the high ping times, i.e. latency, are almost identical in most situations, so doing basic things on your phone won't have a major boost in speed on a WiMAX connection. If you were downloading a ROM from Clockwork or any other large transfer, 4G ideally would be significantly faster than 3G. Updating Twitbook or Facespace wouldn't have a big difference in speed unless you had a gawd awful 3G connection and for some reason a good 4G connection. The major dealbreaker for most is the extremely negative impact it has on battery and how shaky the signal is when you're in motion.
Nope. I don't get it in my area anyway.

Ha ha ha. Not where I come from. I'm in Iowa. We won't be getting 4G for a while.
easy way to see whats it's like...turn off your 4G radio for 5 days and see how it feels. then imagine that the UI itself is a bit smoother with more customization options. you now have an idea of CM6. course, we are expecting 4G in the sooner rather than later time frame.
i live in a 4G area and have lived without 4G for months. I look forward to having it but since i don't tether or stream movies its not a big deal. i miss the 'copy/paste' everywhere more than i miss the 4G radio.
a nandroid backup
a titanium backup
do a full wipe
enjoy
i ran CM nightlies for a few months, i have no 4g though.
i do have WiFi at home, at work I get a crappy connection to anything, if 3g is pulling down @ 300kbps i'm happy with that...tried Verizon PRL but it bumped ping up to 300ms instead but got 1.4mbps down. Stuck with Sprints 160ms ping though.
Probably flash the 12-17 nightly though, running the stock rooted sprint rom now, tired of how sluggish it feels.
k guys ive been looking at why so many people running CM on their evos have been getting horrible data speeds.
i flashed 6.1.1 as well as the v7 kernel from Bnice on this thread:

my speeds have been great. i encourage you look to into it and post back with your results
EDIT: UPON REBOOT DATA SPEEDS SLOWED BACK DOWN...

I wasn't aware this was a widespread issue on CM... my data speeds have been fine on CM.
How are you testing? And you've ruled out signal issues?
its horrible. i really dont know what happened because i used to be fine on CM6 also. one day everything changed. and yes when i flash a sense rom i get normal 3G speeds. ive run RUUs and wiped everything. i dont know where to begin. i think im going to completely delete everything off of my internal storage and external storage until i have a completely stock evo and try to start over
I'm Running cm6.1 in NYC and I get horrible 3g speeds. I've been running cm6 for a while now and never noticed how the 3g speeds were until this weekend. I love cm6 Rom but I might just have to go back to Sense if no solution is found.
i have contacted cyanogen about it. hopefully he will address the problem soon
Wondering if anyone has opinions on whether or not it's worth going to CM7 in its current state over CM6. Is it still really buggy even from the last update for Evo. Is it in condition to be used for 24/7 use like CM6 is?
not if you are needing or are able to use 4G. If you are in an area like me where there is no 4G yet I would say go for it. I love the latest build 7.0.2.1 for everyday with the timat kernel and I am really liking playin with the new virusrom gengersense. Virusrom almost has this rom to where it will be my everyday user.
Any large benefit from not using the stock kernel?
I have been using CM7 (current version 7.0.2.1) since the stable 7.0.0 was released. The recent version has fixed the GPS, but I cannot comment on the 4G as I don't have service in my area. I am using Savaged Zen, and really enjoy it. Gives you the abilty to overclock, better battery life.
Is there anything MORE stable than the stock kernel for CM7? Let me put it that way. Or something better on a ridiculous level in terms of real world use from a different level (don't care about battery life as long as it gets me through the day like CM6 does.)
They don't do much to the stock kernel. Customs will give you better battery life.. ussualy.

Tiamat kernel (3.3.8) has been great for me. As a whole CM7 stable has been just that, stable. I haven't flashed any of the updates since it dropped because nothing major has really been added / changed. Ever since doing the Sense fix I haven't had any GPS issues either.
I've been thinking about getting back on a CM 6.1.2 ROM just for kicks. CM7 battery just doesn't seem to touch what it was, no matter what I do. I know it's a 'step back' but I might set one up and make a NAND of it (deleted my old one) and see if I'm just making the difference out to be that much greater.
I'm not not happy with CM7, but I am wanting to get back on CM6 with the original Sculpted theme. I miss a lot of the little extras that have yet to be merged / added into CM7.
I had wakeup issues with the stock kernel - buttons light up, but screen remained black.
Bumping min cpu to 384 fixed this 99%, but I didn't want the cpu to be at that speed at all times.
Flashed tiamat 3.3.8, worked ok, but had bizarre reboots when using gps (never had stability issues with cm7 prior). After the reboot my 4g didn't work. Restored a sense rom that had wimax.img backed up, confirmed 4g working, then restored a stock cm7021 backup and installed tiamat 3.3.7. So far so good, and no black screen issues, even at stock speed (245 mhz). Also, tiamat seems to bump the incall audio a step loader than the included cm7 kernel. Ymmv.
You really need to test for yourself. Your device is likely to function better with one kernel than another.
Currently running CM 7 RC-2 seems to work good for the most part. 3G speeds seem to be the same as Fresh and Mikfroyo but man 4G speeds are slow. It's fast on the phone but tethered is slower....about 1.5-2 mbps slower than when tethered running sense. Also something new I have noticed is when I force the phone into roaming I normally only get 1X on verizon but I am now able to get 3G roaming....is this something new???
Lately I've been pretty much stuck on 1x at work when I normally have 3g almost the whole time. Any ideas as to how to fix this? I'm running 7.0.0 and have tried restarting my phone.
I tried searching, but if this has already been addressed, someone please say so and I'll look harder.
I updated to 7.0.3, same issue...anyone?

Have flashed a radio recently? Which one are you on?
I've noticed that on CM7 3G is a lot slower for me than other ROMs, and on any AOSP ROM 3G sucks a LOT more battery life than it did on Sense
Maybe Verizon is working on towers in your area? Or maybe try flashing another rom to see if it alleviates the problem, if it does then you know for a fact that it is CM and you can start to work from there.
Hope this helps...

Really? I've had the total opposite.
I honestly didn't think ROM's had anything to do with data speeds but I noticed when I went from CM7 to SkyRaider3.5 it dropped nearly in half. I kept on SR3.5 for about 3 months, and then again it's now double (peaking at 325KB/s) on CM7.
To the OP, the most common things I would suggest you to do is check what radio version you have, if it's too old or maybe a newly flashed radio then that's a likely cause for your problem.
Also, more importantly is to update your PRL codes with *228
