hello guys!i am new to the xda-forums and a new user of the motorola defy!firstly thank's for all the tutorials, advice and information about this incredible device!
i just bought a defy with the 2.51 (motoblur firmware)+(2.1 android) and i would like to upgrade officially to froyo.i have some questions though:
1)i would like to have an official firmware.as i read,there are 4 available-all leaked(stock though,right?),UK,chinese,Poland and a new one from Finland...so,which one is the best?smooth,fast without bugs?
2)are all of them 2.2 or 2.2.1?are there any differences?
3)are all deblured or is there any with motoblur?i don't mind particularly not having motoblur as long as i have official froyo..
4)which are the specs of these froyo's and the differences with stock 2.1?is there any 10.1 flash support for example or the ability to save the applications on SD card?
5)what's up with the downgrade issue that i see many asking about?i read that the new ones roms don't support downgrade..is there any problem except the fact that you don't have warranty if you upgrade(unofficially)???

Hi everyone !
i'm totaly new to the android phone thing
i would like to ask for your help , to get some answers for my questions
got the Desire today and found out that there are two version of the device out
one codenamed 8181 and the other 8183 i think ... is there any difference between the two ?
what does rooting the device mean ? is this the same thing as HardSpl for Winmobile devices ? or is it more like the iphone Jailbreaking ?
what are the things that a rooted device can do that not rooted can't ?
are all the Androids compatible ? ( for example if a version is released on a device can all the devices install it ? )
since i can;'t access android market, is there another place that i can get android games and software ?
does the OS have a File manager ?
can we have custom ringtone , or is it limited to the one in the ringtone menu of the Sense UI ?
THANKS IN ADVANCE EVERYONE !
OK here goes!
Rooting the device is basically removing the HTC restrictions on the rom and therefore you can install custom software on the handset.
I think the 8181 8183 thing is the version of handset. 8183 can only be used on certain networks in certain countries. I'm not 100% sure on that though!
A rooted device can use custom roms, you can use apps like titanium backup that will only work with rooted devices, you can install themes, and you can customise it till you hearts content. Within reason. You can install your apps on the SD card.
All android software is not compatible. You can not for example, install nexus one software on a desire. It can be ported over but this depends on the developers and if they want to do it. We have some superb devs at the minute who have ported the nexus one froyo roms. They are still a tiny bit buggy, but those bugs are literally being fixed one by one every day. I'm using a froyo port and it's perfect for me in everyday use.
Why can you not access the market?
You can download file managers in the market.
You can have custom ringtones and notification tones. If you search these forums you will see how to put them on.
Hopefully this has helped you a bit!
Thanks For Your hElp
Helped a Lot
Hello,
I have searched all the threads under the Desire category but not one of them contains the desired information. Is there any ROM (with active developement) that delivers "with Google" experience? Possibly a clone of N1's ROM with all the available languages supported by default in "standard android based" phones (Czech)?
Answers to F.A.Q.
------------------
1. No, I do NOT look for a CyanogenMOD or an Oxygen!
2. I did not buy N1 because there is no way I could buy one in the Czech republic with valid warranty.
Thank You for your responses!

Well, the N1 ROM is just an AOSP ROM with the Google Apps inside.
I know this goes against your FAQs, but you can simply install CM or Oxygen (AOSP theme) and then top it up with the GApps.
As far as I know, there are no active AOSP ROMs that fit your bill completely, as all three (CM, DF and Oxygen) are being added on by their developers and will differ significantly from the N1 ROM.
Like I said, the closest you can get is to get an AOSP ROM such as CM.
Or perhaps there is a specific reason that you are trying to achieve with this ROM that you think other ROMs couldn't do?
If you go over to MoDaCo you can get an N1 port for the Desire
Thank you!
Thank you guys for the answers.
Hi Guys,
Previously I have had a HTC Magic, Vario II and Vario III. Am used to easy flashing and updates lol.
I know Moto have got a locked bootloader (seen the news about possible unlocking coming) however I could not resist the Defy as T-Mobile UK gave me a fantastic deal.
T-Mobile handsets come "customised" something that is not popular with me will probably debrand it.
1st question, can I flash back to the branded firmware if it needs to go back to T-Mob?
2nd question there is alot of talk over 2.51 normally I would automatically upgrade to the latest ROM however am unsure if it is worth it?
Cheers,
The easiset thing you could do it so make a nandroid backup of your current setup and then try what ever SBF you want except for 2.51 (this due to the fact that it has a non downgrable bootloader).
I bought a german defy and I installed the 2.31 firmware which I'm happy with. Since then I have also deodexed the system files and removed some apps that I dont need.
Just read through the faq/guides sections of the development board and you will be fine.
If you're new to the Defy, this guide is indispensable.
I links to a series of other guides but it lays them out in the order you should do them and the author also adds his own little notes which are very helpful.
Personally, I flashed the 2.34 ROM as it's got less Blur crap on it.
There are also Froyo ROMs kicking around but they're basically backups from other people's phones, as opposed to proper builds released by Motorola.
Hi there folks!
I've been searching and reading post for two days and i've found some interesting posts, an one that almost fits my case but i still need some advises or opinions
I've bought a HTC Desire branded on Orange (but i already unlocked to any network). Now what i want is to debrand. In many posts i see that some rooms need to root the phone, some note, some may cause wireless, radio or camera problems .. I would like to have an official rom that i can update always when htc launches updates and do not causes issues ot the phone like radio issues(or other), it is possible? I've seen official releases like in thread id 7559576 but it seems it cant receive updates and has some problems :S I've also seen and leedroid and oxygene seem nice roms...
If not possible to have an official rom that can update i would like one stable rom that causes no problems to phone (like radio, wireless, gps or camera issues..) that let enjoy to the max your phone and gives autonomy
Last question: The language of the phone can be installed independently of the ROM or the ROM has to be in that language?
Technical data (that i've seen there and looks important when updating rom):
hboot: 0.93.001
s-on
radio 5.10 05.30
hi guy's
thanks for your effort here, i have 2 questions:
1-i would like to install new HTC GB RUU, but the problem is arabic language is not supported this time from HTC, when i contact htc they give me some advices to download some app from market (which can help me in some app like browser, sms,) but Facebook and email service cant be replaced..?? so my question is there any way to include arabic language to the last GB upgrade..??
2- in case i can't add arabic to HTC update, can someone advice me which ROM can be simmler to HTC ROM (GB) i mean classic ROM without tweaks, additional app, i just want something basic...
my device is not rooted..
Before you rush off and update to gingerbread with the new RUU you should do some research. The new update comes with an updated bootloader, meaning it cannot yet be rooted or S-OFF'd. There have been many complaints about phones being soft-bricked after the update also (stuck in HTC screen, phone not booting, no recovery, not able to use fastboot as they are S-ON [you'll learn about what all that means in due time] ), as as of yet, there was no way to fix them.
If you want something similar to the new GB, there I believe is a ROM which is based on the actual official GB that has been released, for sense 2.1, I would try RCMix, it gave decent performance and had very little or no bugs that I can remember.
