just rooted via Pauls guide - how to get apps2sd if not using linux? + 1 question, us

the guide worked great.
it's gone to 1.15, is it safe to do the OTA update it's asked me about? it won't remove root? or more importantly trash my desire?
** i did search on the root thread about apps2sd but it refers to using linux (which i dont have)
i did have a look at the nimbu root guide, which includes an addition to add apps2sd, but it's for an older boot loader .75 and i'm on .80
can i just follow that or do i have to flash a new rom on there?
basically, i'm happy with 2.1 really till the official comes out, just badly need a2sd.

hi im on bootloader .80 and used the files at the nimbu tutorial and it works fine, just drop the zip onto ur sd card and flash it from recovery, make sure u wipe ur device first tho

If you do the OTA update you will lose root, so therefore lose A2SD.
Why don't you just install a custom 2.1 rom with A2SD already in it?

Download ROM-Manager(on the Market), flash the Clockwork recovery(its the only option by default). after that is done. go to the option PARTITION SD, choose 512 for ext, and 0 for swap. It will put the FAT32 first and the ext second as required for the A2SD+. THEN Go and download Modaco mcr3.1 rom (it is based on a stock rom, with HTC Sense) You get all the goodness ROOted fone and extras from Pauls ROM including built in A2SD+

Hi, I've rooted my phone earlier, and have tried a bunch of different rom's - in all this going back and forth, my bootloader has been upgraded from 0,75 to 0,80
If i now put this Modaco rom on my phone,and then when there is a OTA from HTC can this be installed on the phone (i know the rooting dissapears) and my phone will be unrooted and like out of the box?

i presume to get apps2sd+ ii need to go through the online kitchen?
would rom manager let me flash this one?
e.g Pays-ROM Desire Sense v2.0 Dalvik+A2SD (RockSolid)+(BraveSoul OC)[06/06/10]

ok, i tried that rom in rom manager, and selected to clear cache/data. it reboots,but i get a drive image with a '?' above it. tried twice and no joy
am i missing something obvious here?

I did exactly this and I'm very very happy. The extras include A2SD+, WiFi Tethering, Wavesecure and much more.. best thing I've done in the past few days
Hopefully this weekend I will do something interesting that doesn't involve my phone.. oh except it will cos I'll need to use it to take pictures, phone people and find people and possible provide a portable WiFi hotspot if the need arises lol!

Thinking about rooting

i got a US cellular HTC desire with 2.2
im thinking about rooting my phone.
i heard that the unrevoked method is the easiest to use..
i read a few guides on that.. seems pretty straight forward cant mess that up.
after i root i would like to flash a custom rom..
what is a good app or program to use to back up my phone? what are some good roms? what is the best way to flash a ROM.
i read the guides here and they confuse me as i read many ways to do this. just want the easiest way to do it and get it done right.

Try ClockworkMod ROM Manager
ROM Manager is really easy to use and it can also backup your ROM ...it can also help you browse/download other ROMs.

i have hboot 1.06 so not sure what to do...
do i have to do steps 4 and 5?

With unrevoked you cannot root your phone yet. You have to use the alpharev x.

I dunno about unrevoked working on that hboot but I know that revolutionary does. However that only gets you S-OFF, then you have to flash recovery (or you can have it flashed in the process), with which you may flash another ROM.
always remember to do a nandroid backup though!
Also, you having a CDMA desire makes things a bit tougher... for example you can't use the different Hboots from alpharev as they will brick your phone.. and don't quote me on this buy all ROMs may not work on it.

so i guess i wont root my phone... really dont wanna take a chance of bricking my phone. unless theres a very easy way to do it with a slim to none chance of error

no it's absolutely safe for you to S-OFF.. so don't have to worry about that, just that there are less things available for the BravoC than the Bravo e.g. not all ROMs support BravoC (I know Cyanogenmod does)
Once you've S-OFF'd and flashed recovery (you are prompted whether you would like to flash recovery in the S-OFF process, select yes) you can just flash a custom ROM. Just always remember to do a nandroid backup before you flash anything!!!, and it's also good to do a full wipe before flashing, as you don't get crap from previous ROM (ofc. back it up before you wipe it lol)

It looks like he's on froyo so he should be able to root using unrevoked fine, no?

thats his hboot version because he has a BravoC, which has a different hboot version.. that's why I'm unsure whether unrevoked would work (I mean yes, it works on BravoC but I don't know what version/ hboot etc. so It'd be safer to S-OFF, flash recovery, then flash ROM, instead of rooting with unrevoked and flashing recovery through that... get what I mean?)

is there a step by step guide for that?

download revolutionary, turn on USB debugging on your phone, plug it in via USB and run revolutionary (following the process on their sit, all it is, is entering the beta key which is given to you, after that everything is done for you)
During the process, you are prompted whether you wish to install clockworkmod recovery, choose yes (unless you would like to install a better recovery choose no, and I'll continue the guide for that )
If you chose yes to flash recovery while using revolutionary, then skip this step, and any of the lime coloured writing, if you chose no, then follow on and ignore any orange coloured writing.

Download the attached fastboot.zip, and unpack it into c:\
Open cmd and type:

yes, you just select backup and it backs itself up.
If you would like to restore, then you do a full wipe, go to backup and restore, select restore and choose which backup you would like to restore
no, nothing is deleted until you flash
to flash a ROM, like I said in the guide:

when you select that option, it will take you into a menu with everything in your sd-card, you just have to find where you put the ROM you want, and select it with the trackpad, it will flash itself, then reboot.

nonnoo you don't restore after flashing.. When you flash a different ROM, you flash a completely different version of Android, that developers have changed/modded. You perform a backup in order to be able to go BACK to your old ROM, if you don't like your new one, or if something goes wrong with it. You only restore when you want to go back to your previous ROM.

is there a way to copy all my messages and apps and stuff like that?
i know some roms dont come with the google apps how do i get those?
what is the best rom out of those three? there any pics of how they look?

very right I almost forgot about the google apps.

You can usually find screenshots of most ROMs.. so it's just about doing some research.
and you can use an app called sms backup+ from the market.
I'd suggest backing up your contacts too! or moving them to the sim card

Yes. Do a backup (nandroid) in recovery and do a complete whipe and then flash the new ROM you want. Be sure to read all the steps in the ROM install guide.

You need to root your device in order to perform activity or processes that otherwise cannot be done. It basically means, sort of like "hacking" the device so that you can do anything with it. (eg modifying system data)
You have to downgrade your device to 1.32xxxxx so that you can use Visionary app to root your device. Here is your guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964996

See if you have an app caled rom manager as you should be able to go through that.
Have a look in mikes thread, read everything!
google search etc... I did 4-5 hours reading before fiddling to make sure I understood what I was doing and in which order.

I think superstick1 misread the OP. Phone already has a custom ROM as stated by the OP.

Thanks for the replys, the is already rooted so I have placed the image on my SD card and installed it that way, i thought id messed up as the HTC white screen on boot stayed that way for a few minutes before giving me the setup.

I'm using a GSM HTC Desire I bought a year ago. Its currently running froyo 2.2. I've used unrevoked to root my phone and did the s-off produce using alpharev a while ago. I'm now trying to flash a custom rom onto it. I read through a couple of tutorials and found out 2 ways to do it. One is to install ROM manager but I have to do a "flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in the software which I don't know if I should do. Another is to download the custom rom and install it through recovery mode by holding on power and volume down.... Is there a difference?
Also reading CyanongenMod installation procedures "3. Update your radio! New radio from HTC 2.2+ roms is required (Desire Radio Thread)." came up and I don't if I need to do this.

Personally IMO i would never use ROM manager. I would upgrade your recovery to '4EXT recovery touch' first, search the forum for the guide, its simple enough.
You should also partition your memory card so it has an EXT partition on it. I would recommend using Gparted to partition the sd.
IMO i would leave the radio update for now.
Search for a suitable ROM to flash, download it, put it on your SD card, go into recovery and flash.
There are loads of guides in the forum just look and follow step by step, if you do everything completely to the guides you will not have a problem.

You can flash your recovery whitout any problem.
ALWAYS remember to make a nandroid backup before installing a ROM in case anything goes wrong.
You should also wipe data, cache and dalvik.
After installing a new ROM, use ROM managers or recovery to make à sd-ext partitions (more space for apps)

Take your advice and go somewhere else. ROM Manager both sucks and blows and just causes problems. The only "good" use it does have is the ability to download ROM's straight to your phone. Otherwise steer clear.

Do not use ROM manager to make backups. Can just cause problems as already stated. Don't be lazy and do it yourself via recovery, now with 4EXT touch it's easier and simpler than ever.

Yes. Go and flash manually. Rom manager is just a middle man that screws up the process. Dont ever use it at least for Desire coz it really doesnt play well with it. Even after you successfully flashed cyanogenmod.

Before i start, just like to say that I spent almost two days to read almost all posts related to my phone, but still feel I need your help.
Ok then:
I own an HTC Desire and recently asked an informatic friend to root my phone, mainly for two reasons:
- In order to install more applications, since it was always with the notification of "low memory space" and still had lots of applications to install and,
- To be able to customize, since I see many colleagues with images and icons very beautiful and I'd like to have that
After the root done, my friend installed the ROM CyanogenMod 7.0.1
I was very happy the phone came to my hands, but even before i start to install the applications i noticed that only had about 70MB free space, and then after installing some, quickly came to 30Mb, even using the App2SD. Frankly it seems to me that this program is working exactly the same way it was before the root. One part goes to the SD but another part is the internal memory. I thought with the root, the entire application would go to the SD.
I also noticed that either the cache or system applications were also in the internal memory and not in SD. So i suspect that something is lacking because something is not right.
Another question I have, and probably can be related, is that applications that came in were the Rom Manager and Superuser. However, if you open the Superuser does not appear nothing, not on the page of the application or the registration page. Do not know if it's normal.
As for the rom manager, any action that I want to do such as Install Rom from SD card, or Download Rom or Check for Rom Updates, or Partition SD Card always shows me the message "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing. Install the Recovery Manager through Rom first " followed by the option Install or Cancel. Has im not an expert, i decided not to install and listen to your help first. What is wrong? what should I do?

1. Search for SD partition guide, a2sd/a2sd+/data2ext guide, Hboot flashing guide, recovery flashing guide, rom flashing guide (in no particular order, get them all), learn and figure out what these are. So before you take a step, you know the risk.
2. Maybe your Desire got RMD Recovery on the recovery partition after rooted. So with your finishing "1." , you should know how to get a ClockworkMod Recovery.
Bad english, hope you know what I try to tell. Learn those and you'll know how to get more ram.

The rooting process installs Superuser on your phone system partition. Superuser is the app that grants root permissions to other apps. Opening it will just show you which apps have been granted root priveledges which I am guessing are none so far.
Do not use ROM manager with the desire it will cause all kinds of problems. You should already have a custom recovery installed when it was rooted.
To get more space for apps you need to install a ROM that supports A2SD+ (not the same as Froyo A2SD) and partition your sd card. Alternatively you could change the phone internal partitions in conjunction with an appropriate ROM but that is more complicated.

How can i know that?!

Shut down phone, then hold vol down and press power - this will take you to bootloader screen. Navigate using vol up/down to Recovery and press power to select - this should take you into custom recovery.
Edit: do you know how your mate rooted your phone? Post the details shown on bootloader screen, and what your original hboot version and software version is if you know.

You are not obliged to help but if you spent some of your precious time posting here, wasnt it better if you helped instead of criticizing? Isn't that the objective of forums?

Oh dear, I'll help you move on from this forum.
You have now S-OFF'd your device, meaning you can now manipulate any data that is saved onto your nand (layman's terms: built in) memory.
If you want to do further change, such as changing the operating system on your device, you need to flash a custom recovery. There is a tutorial on my guide on how to do so. Do not ask me which one to flash, remember a recovery is a recovery is a recovery is a recovery - they ALL do the same thing, some may have different features than others.
Once you have flashed recovery backup your ROM.
There are a few different variations of Android, here are A FEW you can choose from, I just picked the first one that picked the criteria.
Sense 2.0/2.1
Sense 3.0/3.5
Stock AOSP Gingerbread
Customised AOSP Gingerbread
MIUI AOSP Gingerbread
AOSP ICS (UNSTABLE)
Once you've decided what ROM you would like to choose, read the forum thread, and find out what HBOOT you need from www.alpharev.io (make sure to check the md5 before flashing, there's a tool that does this for you in resources on my guide). And flash the hboot (tutorial on my guide).
A lot of ROMs also support A2SD. For this you need to have a EXT3 or 4 partition on your sd-card. Use Gparted to make a 1024mb EXT3 or 4 partition on your sd-card. Make sure to back it up beforehand as it will be wiped.
Put the ROM on your sd-card, boot into recovery.
In recovery do a full wipe of boot, system, data, cache and dalvik cache.
Flash the ROM you wanted to use.
reboot.
That's as much help as you'll get from anyone here.

Well, best way to gain some knowledge is a) to read and b) to try out different things. So please, stop complaining and just do it! Most of us learned how to do things by doing them. And that's also the reason why most newbies get some troll posts when asking things.
This post is not meant to insult you, but just to give some advice. There are very few states where your phone will be totally unusable, so just give it a try.

Looks like you haven't got a custom recovery flashed. If you are going to use ClockWorkRecovery then next time when it asks you to flash CMW recovery say Yes and follow the instructions. Personally, I prefer 4EXT recovery (you can search for it in Google play store). But you need a custom recovery on your rooted phone before you can start tinkering with it.

you're rocketing your way to 10 posts very quickly...spreading a little bad advice along the way
- you need to be s-off before you can start tinkering with recovery
- also, he has already been advised correctly not to use ROM manager at all...

1.Just install 4ext app from Google Play
2.Flash with it 4ext recovery, boot into recovery and do a backup of your current rom
4.download the customrom zip of your choice.
3.download the required hboot and flash it.
5.boot from the 4ext app into recovery do a full wipe
6. go to install zip from sd ( if needes toggle veryfication off before)
7.Reboot
8. finish
7.Have fun

If i recall correctly, the timeline i followed was
stock rom
got my self root and custom recovery (clockwork) ( unrevoked.com)
custom rom, on stock hboot
s-off, custom hboot, custom rom with more space for data (alpharev.nl)
so a custom recovery without s-off is possible
