[Q] Rooted many phones but i can't do this one :S - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok i have rooted about 5 desires for myself and me mates, and im trying to do me neighbors for her and i just cant get the pc to recognize it, bit more info:
The phone is with virgin but not branded.
Model: A8181
It's on stock 2.2 froyo, Build: 2.22.315.3 CL283825
KERNEL [email protected] #1
BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT- 0.93.0001
Radio: 32.48.00.23u_5.11.05.14
OK obviously i need to create a gold card and downgrade to 2.1 eclaire and root using unrevoked, but i cant acquire the cid via command prompt as it doesn't recognize the device,(debugging on or off) all possible drivers are installed from what i am aware and obviously i have the android sdk.
I don't normally ask for help on things where there is a million and one guides and believe me i have tried for hours, and i'm sure its something stupid but any help is much appreciated, and a vague step by step would be amazing (if possible).
Billy_M

Why don't you just copy the cid to SD via a file explorer of your choice? No need for root, adb or similar for this step...

If thats a new desire it more than likely has an SLCD screen so if you downgrade to 2.1 to root, your going to have to get a SLCD rom for it, as the drivers were not in the AMOLED roms
but you probably knew that anyway

If im honest with you, i wasn't aware they change the screens on the new ones and yes it is bran new contract phone :S

Also you need to downgrade your HBOOT to 83 not 93 from memory
Sent from a MIUI rom

if you want to make a gold card easily, search on android market for "gold card helper", i used it and its alot easier than the standard way

[Q] Rooting Questions

Hey, I'm gonna come with a really noobish question I gues... I've read alot of guides and such about this, but I still don't find anything that states it clearly, and it can get kinda confusing.
I have an HTC Desire that I want to root, it has HBoot 0.92 and OTA Froyo 2.2, I don't think this is a problem anymore though?
Now, I believe my phone is unbranded/unlocked - any way to check?
And what radio would I need to use? I'm from denmark and the tele company is called Telia... Does it matter?
And since I'm from denmark, I can't buy any paid apps off the market, and it pisses me off, rooting will fix that right?
I'd like to use the OpenDesire ROM. But it's a bit confusing with all kinds of topics refering to eachother, and the "Ultimate guide on rooting" says that I need HBoot 0.80 and a current rom of 1.15 (or something like that), I have 2.2 >.<
Thanks in advance.
Go to Settings>About phone>Software information
If your phone has S/W 2.09.405.8 then you're on a generic Desire - which is a good thing!!
Next is to check the box specification - if it says you've got a 3.7" AMOLED screen then you can downgrade the HBOOT and root your phone. If it doesn't say AMOLED then you've got a bit more work involved and the information you need is in the ROM Development forum
Hey, thanks for the quick reply!
I got everything you said.
So that means I can just use Unrevoked?
And how about the market? That's one of the main reasons for me to root, so that I'd be able to access the full market?
Bump? Or something
there's no way to root a Desire with the Bootloader HBoot 0.92 known yet, which you got after you've upgraded to Android 2.2.
This means you have to downgrade the bootloader first, root it with unrevoked, ...
There are several guides out there.
But the important thing is, that you must downgrade the Bootloader in order to root your device.

Some questions about Desire

Sorry for posting this please delete or relocate if this thread is in wrong location or breaks the rule.
I just bought Desire. The seller said it was AMOLED version but I think it's SLCD as there seems to have light at the edge and on the box doesn't say anything about AMOLED. Doesn't matter, it is not important.
But, hope someone can help me with these:
1- This unit is bought in Malaysia under original SiS warranty. I know rooting it will void the warranty, what I want to know is can I unroot the phone to its original condition later before I send it for warranty? If yes then where can I read the guide to do this and the method?
2- As I planning to root the phone, does AMOLED or SLCD makes a difference?
3- What is the preferred memory card capacity and speed? I mean, most people said 8gb/16gb class 10 is good but is it necesssary?
Thank you
2- yes! People bricked their phone due to having and slcd version! Check your hboot turn the phone off. Once everything is off press and hold volume down and tap power... wait youll see a menu 2nd line should say. Hboot something like 0.80 etc. Theres some useful threads in the dev section
Cant renenber the number) for me it never made a differance.. class 4 8gb was good enough for me never had to wait fot it load or anything
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
HBOOT/SLCD is irrelevent as once unrEVOked 3.2.x has been released you can root it with one program...as for going back to stock/unroot yo'll need to see if there's an RUU file of the ROM your Desire comes with.
To check what you're using at the moment (or when the phone arrives) go to Settings>About phone>Software information and post the information here. We can then advise

Thanks for the help guys
Right, it seems you've got the Asian ROM, and there's a FroYo ROM available...
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_143921_signed.exe
That should work (if it asks for logins, username/password is shipped)

Thanks for the link. Am I just need to flash this ROM or should I follow the step as stated in the wiki?
So, before I flash my phone, just want to be sure again, how can I save a backup of my current ROM or where can I find a stock ROM in case I needed it later?
I still have 2 years warranty, so my understanding is that if I ever want to claim my warranty, I need to unroot the phone back to stock ROM before sending it over. Correct?
So, rooting the phone is not a problem for warranty right?
Thanks.
No the one Eddy is linking is the original rom. Just the froyo(2.2) version.
If you want to root you should look for a topic on it in the development section.
Btw. I believe the 0.83 hboot means you have got slcd screen please read on for faq about rooting slcd:

[Q] root android 2.2 hboot 0.93

Hello i have bought new htc desire.. Didnt know that i cant update software.. now my phone is:
Android version 2.2

Kernel version 2.6.32.15
Builld number 2.10.405.2

Can you tell me please, can i have root permisions? was trying to do with teppic74 manual(forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256) but nothing happends..
That guide works fine IF you have an AMOLED screen...if not, which is likely, you'll need to wait for the final release of unrEVOked to be able to root...a quick search (as per forum rules) would've informed you of this
Why do you need to root anyway?
It works on any screen...

Was sure it did but read someone else saying it didn't on Android forums so thought I'd put it on. Seems OP isn't doing it right then
"nothing happends" isn't the best report I've ever had.
The downgrade tool will flash any bootable phone with a 2.1 stock ROM that works on both screens - it doesn't matter if the current ROM is rooted, custom, stock, broken, so long as it is bootable and the sdcard works.
I have the hboot 0.93.0001, can i root it using a goldcard ?

[Q] Ask for help in rooting hTC Desire - Gingerbread 2.3.3 official RUU

Hi guys!
I`m sorry if this issue has already been discussed, but I`ve spent my last 4 days practically non stop online tot find a solution to my problem, and found nada.
Here`s my problem:
I own an hTC Desire and I`ve currently Upgraded my Froyo(2.2) to Gingerbread 2.3.3, running the official Gingerbread 2.3.3 RUU.exe file.
All went well, but this was kinda` stupid on my part. Gingerbread 2.3.3 works fine, but obviously I lost my root access, and also got an upgrade on HBoot, from 0.92 to 1.02, and I can`t seem to be able to root it anymore. I`ve tried everything I could find:
- Revolutionary.io - doesn`t detect my phone
- Unrevoked3 - "Unable to get root; is your firmware too new?" (duuh)
- Gingerbreak(1.0; 1.1; 1.2) - hangs on the root proccess and doesn`t get the job done, I`ve waited about half an hour, and got nothing
- HBoot flash utility from Alpharev (PC reboot on bootable CD from alpharev) - same, it hangs, doesn`t detect my phone.
- Created a Goldcard, copied new updates/ROMs to the root of the Goldcard, rebooted phone to recovery - "Version older than current" (that was expected).
Has anyone succeeded in root-ing the official Gingerbread RUU 2.3.3 on hTC Desire? And if YES, will you please, for the love of God, share it with me?
Here are my phone specs:
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23
Kernel version: 2.3.35.10-g3f43272

To narrow it down, revolutionary is the only way so concentrate on that. Ensure you read the documentation thoroughly as it has been successful for many
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
make sure you have usb debugging turned on then run revolutionary
USB debugging was always ON when attempting all of the above, "adb devices" lists my phone, so adb is fully working, I`ve also installed all of the adb SDK Windows drivers, including the "Booloader driver" - basically Windows Device Manager is OK in what drivers are concerned. I`ve covered all the basics, I`m not a newbie in this.
I realise that Revolutionary is the "main way to go", but it doesn`t detect my phone, no matter what I do.
I`m going berserk trying to root it
Not "main", only.
Tried different usb ports/ cables?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Tried that too, tried all of the above on different PCs/laptops, both Windows XP and Seven.
Still nothing
Well you're definitely doing it right it would seem. Maybe see if you can contact the revolutionary guys?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
There`s no contact listed on their site.
Plus, those guys have better things to do than mess around with my little problems
A downgrade would also suffice, rooting is easy on Froyo, but thanks to this version of HBoot, I can`t do that, either.
Users are incredibly lazy and/or stupid when it comes to figuring out how to solve problems by themselves. Unfortunately there are also other naive fools who will help every n00b asking even the most ridiculous question possible. And because of them they will return back and ask stupid question again. And again. And again. I guess this is the new form of trolling, otherwise I can't explain how completely sane people with IQ higher than ape are willing to willingly support n00bs without actually teaching them anything useful.
Thanks for ur "kind" words, Terepin. I do seem to have a low IQ, seeing how I`ve spent all this time trying to figure out a solution to my problem, and failed, ultimately, as a measure of last resort, asking for help here.
Please, "great one", enlighten me - and other "n00bs" like myself - : what is the solution to the problem previously presented?!
Should be easy for someone with such superior mentality.
Fact that adb sees it is one thing, but does it see Windows?
Alright i_cs_u
I did the same thing as you so used Revolutionary and it worked first time for me. I know thats no help but the only things I did different are the usual like unistall HTC sync and make sure you have the HTC fastboot drivers installed which are available on the Revolutionary site. Hope you sort it dude.........
Good question. Do you even have installed HTC drivers?
HTC Sync is long gone from PC, never really found any use for it, and yes, the drivers were installed, got them from the same site as u did. Like I said, I covered all the basics, I practically read each and every thread Google had to offer on this topic; for some Revolutionary worked, but seems like it has something personal with me, won`t detect my phone at all.
What the hell am I missing?
LE
@ Terepin, sorry for "barking" at you dude, just going outta` my mind here cause of this.
LE2
GOT IT DONE!
U won`t believe what was blocking it - THE BATTERY!!!
I`m using a custom made battery - 3500mAh, removed it, used the original one and it worked.
Why was the baterry blocking the software, makes no sense what-so-ever.
Thank you all for your help and patience!
Peace!
I've got exactly the same set up as the OP and want to root my Desire.
Is there a 'noob' guide for doing this using - Revolutionary.io?
Thanks
Yes. There are guides all over the internet. Just search 'how to root HTC desire using revolutionary'. The one on the cyanogen Wiki is pretty good.

[Q] How to know if my phone "shipped" with Gingerbread

I am interested in unlocking my Orange branded Desire HD. The AMT looks helpful but I need to downgrade to 1.32. I found some instructions for this but the disclaimer at the top bothers me.
DO NOT USE THIS IF YOUR PHONE CAME WITH GINGERBREAD.

(it bricks the phone if your phone came pre-installed). Now I have two issues with this:
1) I did not care about android when I got it in February 2011 (the date probably means NOT gingerbread)
2) I sent it back to HTC in December 2011 because the GPS and proximity sensor were faulty. It came back working and the job sheet said something like the circuit board had been replaced, but like a n00b I could not find it when I searched when I realised how important it might be.
It came back with the same IMEI, if that helps.
So here is the question:
How can I tell if my Desire HD is a "shipped gingerbread" device.
I have root, ENG S-OFF, know how to run adb and fastboot but not much more than that.
I Guess Ur Using The Froyo Android 2.2 U Can Go To Settings,About Phone and check android version if its 2.2 then its froyo if 2.3 its gingerbread but in my opinion its froyo since you've routed it etc
Yes, sorry, I meant to say I am on Absolution 3.6, which is gingerbread, but what I'm running now doesn't tell me whether I'll be bricked if I downgrade.
i didnt get why u want to downgrade and downgrade to what?
As I say...

No Cz Htc Have Made A Security For The gingerbread update for the dhd so it cant be rooted u will have to downgrade it to froyo to gain root
1) no need to go.through all this trouble. You are allready sim unlocked. All the rooting methods used gfree Wichita along with soff gives you simunlock aswell
2) GB. Is rootable using ace hack kit no need to downgrade
Edit I should add. Their is no.need to downgrade unless your phone is on the newer sense 3.0
