[Q] remapping arrow keys - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi. I'm trying to fit all russian letters to Rhodium's hardware keyboard. Want to remap arrow keys, but it looks like there is a problem: when I add something like "{0x26 . . , , 0xff}" (just example, to get "." instead of Up and "," for Fn+Up) to my *kmap.txt file - nothing happens, key still works as Up. For example, such remapping of Sym key works fine ({0xBC . . , , 0xff})
However, {0x26 0x92 0x92 0x00 0x00 0xff} works fine too - with it, I have 'Internet' button, which launches Opera, instead of Up button. How come?! Tried different combinations, but still can't map any symbols/letters to arrow keys. Is this impossible? Thanks.

Yea, that's correct. In that case, you would need to modify the keyboard text file. I'm not 100% certain how to do that properly, however.

Yes, and I've already remapped all keys by modifying txt files. But it looks like arrow keys couldn't be remapped that way... Although there are lines about them in txt files. That's strange. No one has ever tried to remap them?

The best advice I can give would be to try asking in the Chef Central forum. There are many experienced users there who might be able to assist you further.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Want to use the Red End key as "Home"

For ease of use I'd like to use the Vogue's Red End Key as the "home" key for the TF2D roms. Only found 1 rom out of the 4 or 5 that I have flashed that does this. I'd like to use one of the other roms, but I REALLY like this function.
I've looked through the other threads and cannot find the answer.
Can anyone point me at a register key that I can change.

key mapping software

for those who r familiar with HTC Tytn ll, we can key map each one & every button for designated software.
Is there any software out there for Xperia to do the same?

KeySwop only for the soft key. I'm looking 4 software to customize the buttons
Oh sorry, right...KeySwop is for the softkeys! But you can remap the hardkeys with windows itself! Start - Settings - Personal - Keys or Buttons (i have a german Rom and there it´s called "Tasten")
Or do you want to change all the buttons, not just the 2 hardkey buttons?

Hi, I recently installed the TF3D as a panel. However, despite having remapped the two front softkeys using SKTools, it still shows Phone and Camera respectively irregardless of what keys I mapped them to.
Any advice, please?

u can reassign these buttons by:
select settings>personal>buttons. I'm using TF3D 3 too but not as a panel... it worked 4 me
Hi,
I did that for my hard buttons but the soft buttons can't use that method.
u can use advance configuration software then. available on the net for free. but must install msoft net s.ware 1st

re-mapping the softkeys is just what it does, it changes the physical key press action, it does not remap the softkeys on the touch screen, to do that you have to go into the registry and change htc/windows etc. etc.

Remap CTRL key to OK

I've been searching and searching, but can't seem to find a way to remap the ctrl key on the unlocked world version to be an OK key.
I think I've figured out how to remap keys, but not to an OK button.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
I am trying to remap the Mail button to TAB. Any suggestions?
nope, I'm not sure how to remap to non standard functions or anything that's not currently on the keyboard.
Anyone else out there that can help???

Use the "back arrow" button! (Lower front, left to the third button.) The "back arrow" = "OK" button.

I don't think that works like an OK, just back.

I don't have mine yet, but I seem to recall a discussion on this in another thread where users concluded that it really does act as an ok. Quick check, go to a setting with the okay button, change something, hit back, then return and see if the setting stuck. I seem to recall that it did.
Now I don't think you mentioned what your remapping method was, but once you've got that down, would you be able to remap CTRL to that hardware back button?
ok, I stand corrected, It does work that way. Thx.
Now for mapping it to the ctrl key on the keyboard. How would I go about that?? I've never remapped before
Have you tried http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php? I have no idea if it can remap to a button that doesn't exist.
I also haven't used it yet, so research first and proceed at your own risk.

Remapping soft keys

So I'm looking at remaping the soft keys (specifically the search) on the front of the phone. There appears to only be one "SEARCH" in the /system/usr/keylayout/vision-keypad.kl - key 217 (see code below) - that if changed has the following 2 effects:
1. Alters the functions of both the soft key on the front of the phone and the search key on the hardware keyboard. When I remap one, they both change to match your modification.
2. When changed, long press functionality of the soft key is lost. It will only accept a short press.
"SEARCH" can be successfully changed to "MENU", "BACK", and "CALL" (possibly others I have not tried) then pushed to the phone in recovery and function perfectly. However, when I map it to be the "POWER", the soft key does nothing on press, while the hardware search key on the slide-out works fine.
Has anyone found a way around this?
We remap the track pad to wake because we dont like using the top mounted power button, but it only does a half-ass job because when you want to shut the screen back off, you still have to reach for the power button. I think the track pad wake mod needs its own 'bacon bits'
Code:
# column 0
key 185 USER3 WAKE_DROPPED
key 100 ALT_RIGHT WAKE_DROPPED
key 217 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED
key 28 ENTER WAKE_DROPPED
key 38 L WAKE_DROPPED
key 14 DEL WAKE_DROPPED
key 54 SHIFT_RIGHT WAKE_DROPPED
I think you're out of luck with regard to an easy fix. I just did a quick experiment with evtest and it looks like the softkeys on the screen are just areas of the touchscreen that the window manager treats specially and generates synthetic key events in response to touches on, instead of being actual mappable keys.

Well the are mappable. I managed to make it be the menu button and the back button just fine. It just doesnt want to be the power button..
The same key can be used as a single quick press or a long press. It is considered two different keys though. So you would have to figure out what the long press equivalent of the search button would be and change that one.
The way this thread can stay in developmental, is show steps on how you are remapping the keys.

Maybe I'm off here, but if I was making this post to show the steps, would that not fall under a "How To" or "Guide"? My goal here is development. Development –noun 1. the act or process of developing; growth; progress. Or in my case, I'm in the act/process of developing a remapped key file to make the search soft key into a power key, and to then share with the rest of the forum. My progress so far is that I've managed to map it to a menu key and a back key with no problems, and am reaching out to others for help as to why it is that when I change it to the power key, it doesn't accept my changes.
Its kinda a gray zone, in that if I were to successfully remap it to the power button and post the file here, it would, technically speaking, be less of a development thread than it is now - because it would be finished developing and instead, merely contain a file with instructions.
However, as requested, and for those who are interested:
The file you are looking for, is as mentioned in the OP, "vision-keypad.kl" and is located in /system/usr/keylayout. You can edit it with a text editor like Notepad++. The line that I am looking at, also refer to OP, is key 217.
I'm thinking now, after messing with it some more, that maybe because it is a soft key it cant be mapped to power, being that as soon as the screen shuts off it no longer functions... But then again there exists widgets that, upon press, turn off the screen and they function fine, so I see no reason this shouldn't. I'll keep you posted on what I find, and would appreciate any help in the mean time.
i'd love to be able to map a longpress menu and a longpress back action. Cyanogen 6.1 allows longpress back to be turned into force kill foreground process. So there is a way to capture longpress on those 4 keys, the question is, what does the system read that keypress as and how can it be mapped.

So it is doable! There are some .bin files in the /system/usr/keychar folder that correspond to the .kl files in the ../keylayout folder, but i havent been able to read them. Maybe thats it.. Gonna figure that out when I land tomorrow and get my computer set up
I changed the Search function key to Camera and it only works on a long press and I get no result on a short press. So maybe the function you are trying to rename the Search key to has to be specific to either way i.e. short or long press but not both.
So it will either work as a long press key for some functions or a short press key for others.
Read the window manager source (from AOSP or CM), determine what scancodes it synthesizes in response to touches or long-touches on the softkeys, edit keylayout accordingly.
Doesn't ButtonRemapper from Android App Dev section work on G2? :S
hey guys, i dont know if you all figured this out or not, I just got the g2, and to remap the key to power button you have to change it to "ENDCALL" not "POWER", after, reboot and voila! your search button now acts like a power button!!!!! Hope this helps!!!!!
Need to Map Back button to one of the soft key
Rceently I bought HTC Desire Z (no warranty), and I am facing the problem with 4 bottom buttons of the touch screen (menu, back, home and search). So I am planning to do hardware map for one of the softkeys to BACK button.
Could you please provide me step-by-step installation of all the softwares and the procedure I need to do for updating "vision-keypad.kl" file. Appreciate your help.
My one more doubt is that what is the difference between "WAKE_DROPPED" & "WAKE". I have seen these keywords in ".kl" file in GITHUB.
Please give me reply ASAP. I am frustrated with the way the mobile is working. Just imagine how it will be if back button stop working and you are in the middle of some application. I restarted my mobile some dozens of times.

[OFFER][MOD]Customizing Physical Keyboard Layout[G2/Desire Z/Vision]

Do you think your physical keyboard could be more efficient if its layout was slightly different?
Do you want special characters to appear just by hoding down FN and hitting a key of your choice??
Are you too lazy or not badass enough to mess around with your physical keyboard layout yourself???
Well, here is the solution:
I will customize your keyboard layout at your wish!
The only things you need are:
A rooted HTC G2/Desire Z/Vision
A root file explorer OR
ADB
The only things I need are:
Your /system/usr/keychars folder
Your /system/usr/keylayouts folder
A list of characters that appear when you hold down FN and hit all the 2nd row's character keys one after another from left to right
Of course your change request
So here is an example of how it might go:
You think: "Damn, I'm a German and bought a G2 from America but I totally hate holding down the 'A' button to write 'Ä' and the 'Z' button should rather write 'Y' because I'm used to it!!!" (can be applied to any other language)
You check if you have the things that you need
You copy the folders that I need to your computer (with the help of root browser or ADB), put them into one keyfiles.zip file and attach it to your post
You write the characters that appear when holding down FN and hitting the 2nd row's keys into your post e.g. !#$%&*()/
You write your change request(s) into your post e.g. When hitting FN+A I want 'ä' to appear and when hitting SHIFT+FN+A I want 'Ä' to appear
'!' can be moved to SHIFT+.
Furthermore I wish that Z could write 'Y' and vice versa
You let me do some magic (hex-editing)
I attach the file(s) that has(have) to be replaced
You (make a NANDROID backup and) put the files into their respective place
You tell me if it works
P.S.:
As I wasn't able to test this on many devices it might happen that I am not able to fulfill all of your wishes. If that happens, please don't get angry. I'm sure that we can find another solution for you. If questions come up along the way don't hesitate asking.
DISCLAIMER:
Though it is quite unlikely that anything goes wrong I am not responsible for any kind of damage that could happen to you, your phone, your family, your nation and anything else that you think is this modification's fault. You decide to ask me for a favor and you take the risk of it. I am completely willing to help you if there are any problems but don't blame me for them.

I see what you want but I fear that this does not have much to do with the keyboard's mapping but more with the dictionary's configuration. You should tell me if I'm wrong.
I could just make your keyboard write characters with key combinations like making FN+SHIFT+E write é.
I'm sorry that I can't give you exactly what you need
Are you willing to do this for me on my Motorola Droid Pro+?
At the moment, when you hold down a key rather than showing the character/number assigned to that letter it shows foreign accented characters... I don't type in any language other than english so I don't really need this. The alt key is in a really awkward place, it really slows me down!
Thanks
You can make the number or so appear when holding fn and not only pressing it before?

I've probably misread... Now I have to press fn release it and press key. Are you able to mod it so that fn effect is active only when it's still pressed
example:
nowress fn release fn press a get the special character
wantress fn release fn press a get a, press fn press a get the special character release fn
Is possible to personalise keyboard even with miui? Because I can't use fn+ z = £ and fn+ x = € so if u can make them works

When I started this thread I was unable to imagine what kinds of modification people want to apply to their keyboards.
In Ice Cream Sandwich the keychar files allow you to vary the key's behaviour depending on whether the shift key is pressed or a capslock is active. But I didn't see anything like fn-lock there. So I think it's not possible to let the keyboard ignore fn-lock. (Excuse me if there is an expression for that - I don't know it if there is any so I just call it "fn-lock".)

Hi,
Previous year I bought a Desire Z in Belgium (so with a Belgian AZERTY keyboard).
Previous month I replaced the motherboard.
Now the whole phone is in QWERTY. SO I remapped the keychars and keylayout files to make it AZERTY again.
It is well done, but some things I'm missing:
- Some characters who aren't in the right way.
- All the rest is allright (qwerty is now azerty again).
I have this keyboard (it is exactly the same):
http://www.android-pour-les-nuls.fr.../HTC_Desire_Z/HTC-Desire-Z-dessus-clavier.jpg
In attachement you find the 2 keyboard files.
For example:
The key in the left corner of the keyboard doesn't function pretty good (@ and ! as you see on the picture).
The key with the € symbol, doens't work.
What I am doing wrong?
For the rest, it's pretty good modified I think
Do you have any solution?
Thx very much!
