Unrevoked should work fine with your setup. As you said, be sure you have the right hboot drivers, and that any program on your computer that can communicate with your phone via USB is disabled, it will interfere.

THE NEWEST unrevoked should work fine. if you want the adb tutorial (i highly reccomend it) it is in my sig under rooting link.

Help!! Stuck in bootloop; always powercylces non-stop!!

I GOT this problem--
I bought an HTC Evo off ebay that was having powercycling issues--- thinking I can clear DATA and start over--with a hard reset-- but FAIL!! I've done some research and it looks like this was a failed FROYO update-- I Tried usring RUU utility to update rom-- and found one that is the same rom as what looks to be on the phone already, because the RUU is telling me something like replace Build 3.26.651.6 with the same thing-- 3.26.651.6-- i will click yes/next-- it will write new info onto the phone-- then it will complete and restart-- then it goes back and power cycles over and over and over again...just on repeat--(i've tried to downgrade roms, but when i do it gives me a error that reads.."Error [140]: Bootloader version error The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android. Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again:---- interestingly enough there is no 4g splash screen when it cycles-- it only goes on the startup image "white HTC 4G EVO with black letters" then will turn off..then vibrate, then repeat again...over and over and over again...
PLEASE help--
I feel as though I've tried everything--
I've also attempted to put "PC36IMG.zip" on SD card with my GF's evo-- then back to mine-- because computer doesnt read my com when its pugged through usb-- i can only connect at "Bootload USB plug"
--ANY help will be greatly appreciated.....
Thanks in advance--
Do you know if the phone was previously rooted? Is it S-ON or S-OFF in the bootloader menu?
For ****s and giggles, download the RUU and .zip from here, and try both.
I hope you didn't leave the seller positive feedback lol
hey MetalHead,
thanks for your quick reply-
Once i get home tonight i will check asap, i dont remember if S was on or off-- and try the link--
From reading and reading and reading-- from everythhing I am gathering the phone seems savable and is not bricked--
So I will keep trying--
ALSO-- I called Sprint 4 times-- 2 reps said the DEC is not on any lost/stolen list and not showing active on anyone else's acct. The other 2 said phone is not good to add to the acct???? hmmm...
Man-- one rep--- was like---"let me put you on hold-- while I read the instructions for how to check an ESN???? i was like forreal?? it was taking like 10 mins already-- and I was like I gotta go..tried to get off ASAP....
JUST in case-- if DEC is good can I just swap phone on acct.. and bring back to sprint? to get fixed or replaced? or will they say NO...cause it looks like it was worked on...
If the hardware version is 002 its more than likely its the cpu rebooting it..lots have had this problem ,including me, you need to replace it...its a hardware defect...sorry
Daaaanng...
Thanks Snandlal--
How can I verify hardware-- in bootloader screen (power + hold down vol key)--
What are the steps to take to have it replaced--
I need to use Sprints TEP?
will I have to pay sprint's deductible??
Can i say that i tried to upgrade to FROYO and due to Sprint's OTA ugrade-- and it affected the unit--?

if this is a factory defect or any problem that has to do with something on htc's end, then sprint will replace it free of charge regardless of whether or not you are the original owner. if it is a problem due to rooting then sprint can void the warrenty so you can never replace it.
i bought my pre used and my warranty lasted until a year after the original activation. good thing too, being that it was a first gen pre, i had to get 2 replacements.
EDIT: also, have you ever got the phone to boot? did you know there was a problem when you bought the phone
Same story here
My evo was working great with 2.1, but ever since froyo I've been having random reboots. My hardware version is 0002. Good thing I put insurance on it, guess I will be taking it in tonight.
Update: Sprint is shipping me a new one free of charge, I would recommend you take yours in to a sprint store. I put the stock RUU of froyo on and made sure I used the s-on from unrevoked too. So everything on my phone was stock and still had the problem, so it definitely was a hardware problem. Sprint should replace it for you like they are for me.
Sup Hockey--
no - I never got it to boot-- the farthest I got-- was replacing the rom with RUU utility that was-- i believe build 3.26.651.6.. which it would complete successfully-- but still have same problem-- constant boot looping...i dont even get to see the yellow 4G animation..
and, yes-- the ebay description read-- problenm is htc phone keeps re-booting--
which, I thought i could take care of by doing a HARD RESET---- boy was I wrong..lol..
Have you tried putting one of the OEM pc36img files on the SD card and then going into bootloader? This is worked for me in the past. When I get the continual rebooting I try a hard reset first and then the pc36img next. One of the two always fixes it for me.
Flash a stock, unrooted ROM, make sure you can register it under you as the owner for a valid warranty.
If it's not a software issue, determined by having a stock unrooted ROM on it then do a free warranty exchange.
My donation link is in my siggy.
Hope that helps!

thats probably what happened. back when the ota came out some people did it twice cause they got the message twice. this "bricked" their phones. i cannot confirm is this is exactly what is happening here. does anyone know if this is what exactly happened to those double OTA'ers? i believe they had the same looping problem that you describe. if so, bring it to sprint and you can get a refurb, and it will probably seem like its brand new too. so i think your in good shape afterall.
just out of curiosity, how much did you pay? cause i could imagine you'd get a killer deal for what could be an essentially brand new phone. on the other hand you ran the risk of buying an expensive (and pretty) paperweight.
Thanks for the advice guys--
Metalhead--
phone has-- S-ON--How can I know if this is unrooted stock or shipped rom??
-from boot screen, EVo reads...
Supersonic EVT2-2 SHIP S-ON

--- also downlaoded the FROYO ROM-- but could not download RUU app-- from site-- and I cant have phone read memory card at bootloader screen so...no bueno..didnt work out-- the last thing I did successfully was use the RUU utility with build 3.26.651.cause i would use fastboot-- to connect to computer-- which it did read successfully--
And question--I will try to swap it on my acct today....
on one of the other #'s on my acct-- that doesnt yet have TEP on it-- So, I will have to add it on---
So-- my question is-- how long do I have to wait before I bring it in-- exactly one month?-- or can I take it in in like 2 days--
from what I recall--the TEP has to be on the phone for a specific time period before I can get it serviced or replaced-- remember-- I bought this from ebay..with issues..lol...i was suckering myself-- LOL-- the things these evos will do to you--
Hi--also got phone originally for $270-- not a major discount-- but it will do-- God-willing... adding insurance will work--
So--
i called Sprint CS rep said he was able to SWAP it over to my number-- and i added insurance to it--
i just saw something on the the boot loader screen--
at the bottom the date reads-- Jul 23 2010, 16:41:47
what does this date stand for??
was this when the OTA was attempted or FROYO update--???
the fact that i added the phone on my acct today-- 9/22/10-- and added insurance--
will this look suspect to the tech at the SPRINT store??
Should i be open and tell them the story that-- i bought this phone on ebay-- wanting to use it on my acct?
Just a last second precaution before I go in--
Thanks again guys!! your wisdom and knowledge is the BEST EVER!!

i would suggest taking it in tomorrow. tell them you bought it from ebay insured and transferred to your account then when you tried to update... fail. since everything else is stock and unrooted you should luck out with a new evo.
So it looks like it was on its way to root (S-OFF is set) but someone stopped short. You have the normal HBOOT version of 93... but you need the ENG version.
go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764062&highlight=forever
and install that. That will give you ENG loader and AMON_RA recovery. from there, flash a stock rooted rom for starters. WIPE everything. If you are unable to connect to your SD card right now, get it out and mounted to a PC with a reader so you can get the files transfered over.
Let me know if that works.
Hi OMGz and EDUfur--
actually my phone reads-- Supersonic EVT2-2 SHIP "S-ON"
Does that mean it has a stock shipped rom already on it?
if so-- Im going to Sprint tomorrow--
=-or is it possible--that i still might need to do extra work on this phone before I bring it in-- and the the retail sprint tech-- will be able to read the bootload screen...and know what was going on with it??
Should I pitch the 2.2 update thing to the rep where it only lead me to the part where it got messed up-- and started re-booting and rebooting and rebooting--
thanks!

[Q] DZ BRICKED!!! nothing at all

Okay, so while doing some unadvised actions, my Desire Z is in the state of not even being able to go into bootloader, recovery or signs of booting up. Not being able to get into bootloader I am unable to get into fasboot to reflash to needed files. It happened when I flashed the radio with Vision_TMOUS_RADIO_12.21.60.09b_26.02.01.15, the G2 one. The phone is s-off with 0005 hboot. I used the newer gfree method of doing this. If anyone can help me to get the phone to connect to the computer, then maybe I can flash whats needed. Or help me do what else to fix this brick, kinda shy of opening it up.
As far as I know, your phone is F.U.B.A.R. due to the fact that they have different radios, one specific to the tmobile G2 which has the different 3G bands as its "world" euro version aka the Desire Z. Sorry bro, vaya con dios. Someone correct me if Im wrong.

Vision_TMOBILE_HBOOT_0.82.0000 (G2): MegaUpload
Installing:
1. Download the archive
2. Decompress it, you'll have a .img file (its name should be "radio.img")
3. Copy it into your fastboot folder
4. Boot your device into FastBoot mode and connect it to your PC via USB
5. Go into your Android SDK folder with CMD (Windows) or Linux terminal
6. Flash the Radio on your device: "fastboot flash radio radio.img"
7. Wait until the process finishes. You should read "COMPLETE" on your device's display.
8. Reboot
9. Enjoy!
Please note that you should flash a new radio only if you really know what you're doing!
NOTE: 26.04.02.17 is known to work on G2 and most probably all the radios are flashable on both G2 and D-Z.
Happy flashing!

Hmmm, is there any way to force fastboot in cmd or anything of the sort? or what would it be like dealing with HTC?
Do you have adb? If so, you can flash another radio.
Also you might try putting stock rom on SD. Make sure its named update. Try booting into hboot. You may just not have an image. Hboot will pick up that update and do its thing. Good luck.

Enough is enough. Go through this forum and grab the ruu radio from football for desire z. I believe this is the only way you are going to break brick. Once you have the file, be on the page with ruu , pull your batt, hook up your phone to pc, hit ruu and wait for it to recognize your phone. If it doesn't, it should give you instructions on what to do. This is the only chance you have I believe.

He bricked it with the radio file. All the os info is still on the phone. Htc will know. These guys went to school for this stuff. Don't be so sure of yourself. There are techs that can pull info from a device that has been underwater so don't think they won't be able to tell. They will go through the phone to find out why it bricked or won't boot and then it will sit with the refurbs after they have put stock os back on that comes with radio file.
Sent from my G2 using xda app
Annnnd in the meantime before they figure all that out, will they send me a new one you think?
One of the first questions a tech will ask you is "did you root the phone?" And unless you purchased that phone directly from htc, you have to deal with your carrier and they wiill tell you that. Real thing is this, you have a nice $600 paper weight. Good luck.

At that point do i just play dumb lol? As pathetic as it sounds, just until the point they send me a new unit or something. I mean they already told me to deal with the manufacturer. I just dont know what extent they"re going to take with it, ya know. Thanks alot for your time too.
mdayjr has no idea what he is talking about. I'm not meaning to sound insulting but you are simply wrong. He can not overcome this. You are bricked, very simple. The only way to overcome a TRUE brick is with JTAG which I'm sure is unknown how to do on a G2 as of now.
If you have insurance, call your carrier and tell them it just started acting up. If they ask about rooting at all just play dumb. They will not be able to ever know any different. Scouts honor. The only possible way to do this is very time-consuming, would be expensive if you had to pay for it, and is VERY risky. You think they can unbrick a phone? If they COULD unbrick a phone easily, they wouldn't replace it with a brand new one. They would make you send it in, fix it, and send it back. That's just better for business. Even if they could tell you rooted, you would already have your new phone before they knew and you would still be sitting there with a brand new phone.
Next time you flash a radio follow read to be sure other people with the same phone/SPL have flashed it and confirmed it working. Coming from a MT3G/G1 the most common reason for TRUE bricks is an improper radio or SPL flash.
If you are ever able to get into recovery or fastboot you are fine. Since you are unable to get into either recovery or fastboot your phone is bricked. If you would like to read about what's going on with your phone right now, you can read more here:

Lol! Are you a cell tech? No...
Am I?
Yes... well... was, for many years
No, you moron... they don't check or try and pull any info if it doesn't power on or have liquid or physical damage. They don't use the same recovery software that you use to recover criminal/goverment files on a damaged drive, lol! What a waste of time! They replace the board if it isn't flashable and obviously they can't see the previous build without a functional bootloader. Plus, a damaged radio is enough to brick. Reflashing a radio won't fix it for sure but its worth trying EXCEPT he can't get into bootloader or fastboot!!! Shut up and quit making this guy more confused, please!

If you can... get a replacement phone from your carrier. Tell them you charged it overnight and it won't power on. Simple as that! Don't listen to that other guy... he has no idea what he is talking about. He means well but is an idiot. He's what we call, in the IT profession, a user that has just enough experience to do some damage, lol! You will be fine... just play dumb. Evo Unroot Repair

So my Evo charger port has been broken for awhile and I finally have the chance to take it in tomorrow to see if they will repair it under warranty. I obviously have to unroot it for them to do this, since I'm on CM7 right now.
So I'm a little confused - I flash the PCIMG to unroot but after I need to go to a stock sense rom. The stock rom threads have been saying if I flash them, I won't be able to re-root my phone. They will probably just repair my phone so I want to be able to root it afterwards.
So what am I suppose to do in this situation? They said they would fix my phone in under and hour if there is a problem.

you will be able to re root again after you get it worked on, no worries. All of the Evo software that is currently available is rootable.
Unrooting is easy, and basically two steps. First, if you rooted with unrevoked, or ever flashed the Unrevoked Forever tool, then you first need to flash the unrevoked S on tool. That will turn your S on. After you flash it, go to the bootloader, and confirm that your S is On. Once that's set, download the PC36IMG, and put it on the main directory of your sd card (not in any folders) Be sure it's named exactly PC36IMG (capitals matter, must be all caps). THen boot into the bootloader, and at that piont the bootloader should find the PC36IMG file, and ask you to update. Press Volume up to say yes. Once it's done flashing, when you reboot you'll be back on a stock sense rom, s on, and ready to take it in for service. You'll be able to root again afterwards using any of the current available methods. Good luck.

unfortunately there (to my knowledge) isnt a way to "repair" your charging port since this is a known issue with the HTC EVO.. i know because I work for Sprint. Unless they have someone there that can sauder your port back on or anything like that your probably just going to get a new phone. what i would tell you to do is unroot it, let them order a new device or swap one out and root that one..just some food for thought.

You must work in a call center.
Evo charging port durability is a known issue. Since it is hardware, a technician cannot reject the device due to being rooted, only if it is a software issue.
You're going to get a new phone, they cannot fix the port as others have mentioned. Don't worry about how easy it will be to root again, as you'll have a different phone anyway.
No i don't actually. and yes I do realize that unless its a SW issue we will work on it. I have done it many a times. If we end up having to swap the device out it must come back with the same SW as it left when you first bought it. Its just our M&P. some of our rf testers will not read rooted devices which is why we don't.. We are required to test every aspect of the device from radio to Screen.

[Q] S-off without a usb port

My usb port broke on my beloved evo (literally came off the board and took the traces with it), unrooted to take it to sprint, including turning s-off. Sprint wants to charge me a bunch of money to fix it, regardless of it being a known problem with the evo's. I decided to keep my evo for a little longer, I can't stand the 2.2 rom I rolled back to. I can get root on my evo I just need to turn s-off, but without a usb port, I don't have any connectivity.
Is there a way to turn s-off without debugging it via computer? Any help is encouraged and very much appreciated.
Thanks, and I am sorry if this is a repost.

Then you either need an SD reader or put your SD card in another phone and place the files you need on it that way.

If you're s-on and don't have a recovery, then you're probably screwed. You can unroot without a usb port, but I don't believe that you can root without one.
If you're still on 2.2 then you may have some luck depending on your hboot version. Search around for some of the older root methods. If they're compatible with your hboot then there may be something that you can do. Considering that z4root will give you temp root, there may be some way to get s-off from there.
If you have insurance on your phone then you may want to try another store - you may get someone that'll give you a refurb. If the port was just loose then you would be in good shape, but since it's broken off they usually won't replace it without charging the $100 deductible.

I have 2.2, and I am bootloader 2.10, I was thinking about doing z4root to get temp root, then trying and pushing the unrevoked3 package through via adbwirelesss. I have my whole phone setup on my sd card, I just desperately need to get s-off to be able to fully root. Are there any utilities to flash in hboot to give you s-off?
I have insurance on the phone, they didn't enter anything in the system about me breaking my phone, I am just probably going to tell them someone stole it and trade them the $100 for a refurb.

Then you either need an SD reader or put your SD card in another phone and place the files you need on it that way.

I have all of the files on my sd card already, unfortunately I can't flash them without a recovery, cant flash a recovery without s-off. The unrevoked3 is an .exe meant to be used by a computer via adb. They did have an .apk that they have since stopped supporting, it errors out when I try it that way.
Shameless self bump, my efforts have failed, and I have explored multiple avenues, but I have yet to solve it, any help is still much appreciated

[Q] Back to S-ON without USB/ADB

Hi guys,
I've got a big issue with my Desire HD. currently on ARHD 6.3.1.
It seems, I've got a USB Bricked Device. I tried several roms, but with no one I was able to establish a connection with a pc. The DHD always only charges and is not detected by my pc. I also tried several cables and pcs.
With this, for my opinion hardware defect, I've been at a official HTC Service Store.
They looked at it and told me they cannot do anything as long as I don't have S-ON.
At this point I am searching for a method to get back to S-ON without ADB, because the USB port does not work as well.
I'm gonna get the official RUU to the phone via PD96IMG on the SD-Card. But if I understand the, for my feeling 100 threads I've read, right, the phone stays on S-OFF and i only found guides to get S-ON via ADB.
So, hopefully someone can help me, because a not working USB port is really annoying!
Greets and thanks to all devs for the great work on DHD
Michael
PS: Waht do you think, can we port this Guide to our DHD?

Sorry posted by mistake. please delete
Is there really nobody with a good idea?
I know Gene Pool has a tool for the inspire I've used with no issues ..

Google gave me this for DHD ,,, I've never used it so you may want to google more for DHD S-ON, and it's all at your own risk I dunno if you'll brick or what.....

@Hydro thanks for that advice.
I'm gonna PM him if I can use it some way for my DHD.
I will post my results.

I would do more googling and no PM,,, those guys are pretty busy, plus I wouldn't ask if he can use the inspire files on the DHD...
Yes I can understand that. That I cannot use the Inspire files for my DHD is clear for me. But perhaps I only have to change zip or something like that.
I am googling for my problem now for about 2 month.
Perhaps I'm too silly, but with no results.
I only found guides that use the ADB via USB.
what region are you in anyways?
I am from Europe / Germany
i re-read your post... first, you've tried USB in different computers I'm assuming? And you've tried different cables? And you've verified you have the right drivers installed and you DO NOT have HTC software installed. Are you running everything elevated? Meaning as administrator if you're using Windows 7? Is your Virus Software uninstalled?
Also have you even tried to flash a stock P98IMG.ZIP from the root of your SD card?
First, thanks for your help and interest.
So, for my opinion I tried everything:
different cables, computers, USB-ports.
Yes, I think I had the right drivers. Tried also everything I found in the web.
It definitly seems the USB port is bricked on hardware.
The guy of the HTC service store also told me they often have devices with hardware defects on USB parts.
Flashing via PD98IMG I have not done yet, because everywhere it is said the phone stays on S-OFF after flashing it. And this is sadly not enough for them to repair it on warranty. They only may repair it with S-ON.
Of course, they also repair if I pay for it.
so if your phone is bricked i would try to get it working first,, before worrying about USB stuff. then you can troubleshoot the USB stuff later... just my opinion. Keep searching for s-on zip ,, it's out there if you dig hard enough,, I did a couple searches and didn't see it without the tool.

Don't think he means his phone is actually bricked. He's using the term incorrectly. Just that his USB doesn't work
What about wireless adb? That could work. I don't know and am skeptical myself, but give it a try.

You could always try ADB over wifi widget from the market, don't know how useful it is as I've never tried it.
^ beat me to it

Yes, you're right. My phone is not completely bricked, just the USB doesn't work.
I have read "USB bricked" that often, that i tought it is right. sorry for that confusion.
Thanks for your hints at the wifi adb version.
Is there someone with experience in that?
I will give it a try...
I assume it will work as I've got the ADB over wifi feature built into the rom I'm using, so there should be some truth to it. I'm running redemption ics alpha

For my understanding, as not beeing a dev.
I installed adbwireless from market, activated it and established a connection to the phone via cmd. (connected to 192.168.100.24:5555)
Is it now possible to give this open connection to a tool like "Advanced Ace Hack Kit" or "Easy Radio tool"?
Sorry for that noob question.
That's the thing tough not sure if you can connect to them. You might have to run the commands manually. You should stop by the hack kit irc channel and ask attn1 if its possible
So this may be a dumb question but can you mount USB in recovery partition? I've seen the error where people can't mount their USB drives. Fix is to reformat the micro usb.
