I'm currently running CM 6.1 and wanted to ask is there a way to disable the stock messaging? I'm currently using handcent and every time I receive an SMS I get 2 notifications in the notification bar. I tried to disable in stock message app but no luck and also tried Titanium Backup to uninstall which it does but yet it keeps popping up. Anyone know how to fix?
Thanks-
Unchecking notifications (in stock app settings) doesn't work? And also you must have s-off or r/w overlay for titanium backup to uninstall system apps.

Noooo don't uninstall the stock messaging app. Baddd nonono. Just disable the notifications for that app in its settings. Uninstalling mms.apk means you can't send or receive any messages at all, mms.apk IS the messaging function, not a frontend for it. Handcent is a frontend for mms, more or less. Without the backend, its nonfunctional, force closes everywhere, etc etc.

Also, fyi, if you longpress a system app there's a recovery exploit that uninstalls system apps, I used it before s off. But yeah don't remove mms.apk. all bad.

I really want to use Handcent SMS as my primary messaging tool. Is there any way to disabled the regular messaging tool? I already tried un-installing the regular messaging tool but it doesn't let me. Since I installed Handcent sms I've been getting double of the same message. Any suggestion?
You don't need to uninstall it. Just open the stock app and press menu and disable incoming notifications.

thanks dglowe, it worked. I don't get the double messages anymore, but if its not to much to ask is it still possible to un-install it.
No dont uninstall it, it will break things.
Is it possible to delete the app "messaging" but not mess up being able to actually text?
Here is my scenario I use handcent to text and they have an option to blacklist (hide) messages from certain people. However the app "messaging" which comes with the phone still shows them! Can I get hide that app? I am have the epic experience with the emotionless beast on my phone.
I couldn't find the app in root explorer either to rename it!
Any ideas?
it's in your system/app directory it's called MMS.apk. you can back up and unistall it with sdx stock app uninstaller and see if everything still works ok. If you have any issues then you can just restore it.

I usd sdx stock app to remove the orignal one in order to put on an mms.apk that allows me to have a maximum 5M mms size. If i delete it after i just put it on wont it remove the feature?
I will try it in a bit anyways though and let you know the results
EDIT: It didn't work,by getting rid of it I can still sms but my mms is completely disabled which makes sense. Thanks anyways for the idea though
Any other suggestions please

I could have told you wouldn't be able to send or receive mms
Just use launcher puerto and hide the stock app on the draw. I believe theres other apps that do this also.

No the issue isn't getting double notifications. I need the app removed or hidden. The messages that I hide in handcent are still visible in messaging, thats the problem.
Use shadysms.

What files would i need to remove to completly remove/disable the stock text messaging app? I found a vanilla one i like very much and i keep getting double texts in both. D:<

You can turn off notifications via going into the stock "text messaging" app through your apps list and then go into "messaging settings" and uncheck the "notifications - status bar" button.
Then you will only have your new text msg app notifying you.
It still shows up in the new messaging app.

You can delete it from /system/app via root-explorer or adb Or you can uninstall it using TitaniumBackup.
download the app rootuninstaller.
and then uninstall it.
I tried to use system app remover to remove messaging. I still get double texts in my vanilla message app.

last time i had this problem (double sms received). i re-flashed the rom.
btw, i wouldn't remove the stock messaging app through, i think the 3rd party sms apps actually use the system one for the actual work, they're more of a "front-end". just disable the notifications should be fine.
if you install another sms app and now actually receiving double sms (not just the notification), i think there's something else wrong...
Hi all, I use ChompSMS for my messaging, and was wondering if I could use titanium backup to remove the stock messaging app safely? Would I still retain MMS, etc?
If not, is there any way to hide it in the default SE UI? Some app/tool?
Think chomp is standalone, so I would day yes, you can uninstall/freeze it.

no chomp doesnmt offer sms or mms replacement. If you remove stock you wont recieve any texts. You can use handcent though and remove stock that will work fine thats what I got.
Go sms pro is bestone!!
And with this app you can uninstall stock sms app.

+1 for go sms
Thanks everyone. I tried GoSMS, but I really don't like their handling of blacklisted threads. I've been using Chomp for a long time so it's what I'm used to I guess.
I'll try freezing/uninstalling and see if things go haywire. I'll update the thread.
have you tried using handcent? They have excellent cutomization. But the bubbles are so ugly I hasve to use android theme style.
apps like backup Master?
I have a touchwiz 5 launcher installed and I love it (only one that doesn't cut off dock when phone is slid into landscape mode), but the mms icon is stuck with a notification of 1. I can have no messages or 6382 messages, it only stays one. It does it for another Touchwiz 5 launcher I had. Is there anyway to fix it?

If you don't care about all of your messages you could try and delete data for the messaging app with titanium backup... you could also backup the messages with an app first just in case it don't work.....

it randomly took off the "1" notification (I didn't clear data yet) and I texted myself, now notifications don't show up. Dang it. About to clear data
