What is the correct thread to follow on XDA with regards to rooting an HTC EVO?
I actually purchased one and have been reading that the older rooting threads are outdated.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thank you.
look in my signature. i can help you out with it too, if you like. it is sort of confusing, but not very hard at all, and by the end, you will be a pro already.
if you want to take the easy (wimpy) way out then use www.unrevoked.com you will learn nothing and probably have problems later bcuz u know nothing but you will be rooted.

Hi,
I see the Evo has a simple root process with a program now ( XDA News on main page ), just wondered if anyone is working on a similar program for the Desire as i'm a bit nervous of rooting my phone with the current method, thanks.
There really is nothing to be nervous about! There used to be problems with older methods, but the new method now is virtually foolproof.
Give it a try and if you get stuck or panic then post here for help.
Simple things to remember are follow the steps in whatever guide you use, and let the process finish, be patient as sometimes things look like they are stuck, but they are not!
There is virtually no risk in rooting the Desire now.
Hi
Can u send a link for an very easy way to root the desire??

Hi.
A very good Tutorial with Videos is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084. Take a look and remember to read it all before starting.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask them here. I'll try to answer as much as I can, but other members can help too.
I used the thread mentioned above when I came to root my HTC, everything worked perfectly.
Step-by-step instructions.. can't really go wrong
I know, I know, I know...
I am a member of a few different forums for other things and there is always a neb that comes on and asks a question that has been beat to death.
I have heard that God kills a kitten ever time someone post a thread before doing a search on what you are trying to get answered. So for my sake, God's sake and that poor kitten sake, I did read through a lot of post before I had the sack to post this question
I am posting this question because there seems to be a lot of different answers to a lot of different questions, so, I was hoping for very direct answers to these questions that I know have been asked plenty of times...
Here it goes...
I have purchased the HTE EVO w/ android 2.2 and I have had it for about 2 weeks.
I want to root my phone, which is my first ever smart phone.
This is what I would like to happen...
1) I want to be able to have the restore point so that I can flash my phone back to stock so that if something happens the warranty will still be good.
* Does this save on my home pc or sdcard? Or Both?
I have read that you need to download here not there(ruu...clockworks/rom manager)...no here not there...If you download anything but this you will not be able to get it back to the stock setting and Sprint will know you have rooted the phone...The whole thing started to get a little confusing.
I am a very simple person so I am hoping for a very simple answer, if there is one.
1) How do I root my HTC EVO that has the android 2.2?
2) How do I make sure that I can have a recovery point incase I mess it up (brick, etc...)
3) How do I make sure that I can flash my phone back to the original settings just incase I have to send it in to be fixed for some reason, which rom manager lets me do this?
4) Is it legal to do this?
5) What might be the biggest no-no to do before, during and after you root your phone?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
Visit the wiki, that should answer most of your answers.
1. Rooting voids warranty
2. Always perform a nand backup if you want to revert to your previous state.
Visit the wiki, the instructions are simple.
EDIT: Actually the wiki will answer all of your answers.

Sorry for the silly ? But what is the wiki?
It is a sticky in Android Development called Evo Wiki. You have to put effort in searching, I believe in you!

DO NOT RUN UNREVOKED OR YUO COULD PERMANENTLY CORRUPT YOUR PHONE!!!!! at the moment, there is no brainless way of doing it. you need to manually set up the adb and usb drivers, and then do some coding work, along with downloading like 1/3 gig of files.
Please Please someone help me! First off, i apologize if this is in the wrong forum but i figured it would be the best place to get help. I just got an EVO a couple of weeks ago (came from an iPhone 4). I understand that root is almost like jailbreaking. I'm trying to update my phone with a new rom but evidently it can't be done without being rooted. I've searched and searched to be able to find a way to root the new sprint update 3.70.651.1 but i just cant find it! can some one PLEASE HELP! I've tried unrevoked 3 but to no luck...

The best place to get help is in the correct forum. There are lots of grumpy people here who would take the time to bust on you for posting in the wrong section, tell you to use the search button or post a link to lmgtfy.com.
Fortunately I'm still noob enough not to do that. Take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448 and see if that helps you.
This one is also a good one to try:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
You gots to know what you are doing. Read thoroughly!
i would for sure use the one suggested by atapia984. it is a little harder, but it is a lot less risky in the long run. also, rooting is not too much like jailbreaking, mostly because you can do everything you can with a jailbroken iphone on an evo without any hacking at all. rooting lets you actually replace the phone's system (and other partitions) with custom roms made by the talented devs here at the xda. you also have total control over hardware of the phone. if you are really stuck on the root tutorial, i might be able to help you out, or even give you a walkthrough if you are too afraid of nuking your precious evo.
Just bought the G2 today. Love everything about it so far. Ive looked through the stickies and cant seem to find the proper rooting method for my device. I dont have a computer at the moment. I would like to perma root it, flash clockwork and maybe try some roms. Im used to rooting i used to have the evo and rooted it with the pcimg. Zips so im not brand new to this. If someone could please give me a recap on things i should know or point me in the right direction i would much appreciate it thank you.
Well, you could try the Q&A section =p but you need a computer as far as I know

Greetings
I am aware there's threads about this, but I have searched a lot around the web, and there's many different replies to this.
I wish to root my Wildfire, running 2.2.1 with 1.01.0001. I want a more smooth-running rom than the stock, and would highly appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction
I don't know if it happens automatically, but would also like to have Livewallpapers enabled.
I'm aware there's always some kind of risk when doing such things, but I rather ask here as it seems like the best site for it!

You are correct, there are millions of guides. Any of them are fine to use, but you need to read up, loads. Learn what you are doing.
Visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824396
It has everything, well nearly everything you need to know about rooting. Read it ALL. Also search 'how to root wildfire' in google and read some guides. Problems only ususally occur if you dont follow the procedure correctly.
Learn the terms that people use, for example, what HBOOT is, how to access it, what a kernal and radio do, what recovery is, how to flash, what a ROM is. If you dont know what i'm on about, find out, because you will need to know.
In regards to ROMS, look for something that suits you, try different ones until you find one you like because each offer different features and styles.
Popular ROMs are Cyanogenmod 7, Rempuzzle and DKs ROM. But you can modify any part of them
Its all part of the fun of rooting.
Good luck in your quest for root access!
that's the specs of my wildfire and your lucky because it's easy to root !
these video help me to S-off first, trust me, it works on a wildfire -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvg0i8in96M, thats your first step in rooting..
then you can also view this link for the succeeding steps (never mind the downgrading step).. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
do it on your own risk
