Easy root for the Desire? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I see the Evo has a simple root process with a program now ( XDA News on main page ), just wondered if anyone is working on a similar program for the Desire as i'm a bit nervous of rooting my phone with the current method, thanks.

There really is nothing to be nervous about! There used to be problems with older methods, but the new method now is virtually foolproof.
Give it a try and if you get stuck or panic then post here for help.
Simple things to remember are follow the steps in whatever guide you use, and let the process finish, be patient as sometimes things look like they are stuck, but they are not!
There is virtually no risk in rooting the Desire now.

Hi
Can u send a link for an very easy way to root the desire??

Hi.
A very good Tutorial with Videos is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084. Take a look and remember to read it all before starting.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask them here. I'll try to answer as much as I can, but other members can help too.

I used the thread mentioned above when I came to root my HTC, everything worked perfectly.
Step-by-step instructions.. can't really go wrong

[Q] Unlocking the New HTC EVO 4G

I know, I know, I know...
I am a member of a few different forums for other things and there is always a neb that comes on and asks a question that has been beat to death.
I have heard that God kills a kitten ever time someone post a thread before doing a search on what you are trying to get answered. So for my sake, God's sake and that poor kitten sake, I did read through a lot of post before I had the sack to post this question
I am posting this question because there seems to be a lot of different answers to a lot of different questions, so, I was hoping for very direct answers to these questions that I know have been asked plenty of times...
Here it goes...
I have purchased the HTE EVO w/ android 2.2 and I have had it for about 2 weeks.
I want to root my phone, which is my first ever smart phone.
This is what I would like to happen...
1) I want to be able to have the restore point so that I can flash my phone back to stock so that if something happens the warranty will still be good.
* Does this save on my home pc or sdcard? Or Both?
I have read that you need to download here not there(ruu...clockworks/rom manager)...no here not there...If you download anything but this you will not be able to get it back to the stock setting and Sprint will know you have rooted the phone...The whole thing started to get a little confusing.
I am a very simple person so I am hoping for a very simple answer, if there is one.
1) How do I root my HTC EVO that has the android 2.2?
2) How do I make sure that I can have a recovery point incase I mess it up (brick, etc...)
3) How do I make sure that I can flash my phone back to the original settings just incase I have to send it in to be fixed for some reason, which rom manager lets me do this?
4) Is it legal to do this?
5) What might be the biggest no-no to do before, during and after you root your phone?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
Visit the wiki, that should answer most of your answers.
1. Rooting voids warranty
2. Always perform a nand backup if you want to revert to your previous state.
Visit the wiki, the instructions are simple.
EDIT: Actually the wiki will answer all of your answers.

Sorry for the silly ? But what is the wiki?
It is a sticky in Android Development called Evo Wiki. You have to put effort in searching, I believe in you!

DO NOT RUN UNREVOKED OR YUO COULD PERMANENTLY CORRUPT YOUR PHONE!!!!! at the moment, there is no brainless way of doing it. you need to manually set up the adb and usb drivers, and then do some coding work, along with downloading like 1/3 gig of files.

Rooting Questions

What is the correct thread to follow on XDA with regards to rooting an HTC EVO?
I actually purchased one and have been reading that the older rooting threads are outdated.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thank you.
look in my signature. i can help you out with it too, if you like. it is sort of confusing, but not very hard at all, and by the end, you will be a pro already.
if you want to take the easy (wimpy) way out then use www.unrevoked.com you will learn nothing and probably have problems later bcuz u know nothing but you will be rooted.

PLZ enter for all G2 users or profs

how can i unlock G2 ?? if it free how ? ad if not , what is the cheapest and TRUSTED way by the web ? thnks all
using stock kernal, and use gfree
man what is gfree and how 2 use it ?
look in dev section, there is guides on how to use gfree and root, best is to look at xda vision wiki
No one here is going to hold your hand through it. You have to search and learn a little. Then you will notice a lot more help

The term "unlocked" is confusing. Do you mean rooted or SIM unlocked?
Either way, it can be done for free. Link has instructions for rooting. If you want SIM unlocked, you need to root AND be Subsidy Unlocked. This method is considered the safest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
Look up rooting g2 no abd required. If you have a new one. You will have to downgrade after u get s-off but no root and then do the same process again. Holding hands is good.

You're going to need to type more than a couple words if you want real help. Did you try any root methods? If so, which one, and where are you stuck. You haven't told us enough to allow us to help you at all.
I've posted the instructions for rooting and getting subsidy unlock in my previous response.
lsn man , i dont do anything cuz am a beginner , i cant understand anything of the wiki says !
Why are so many people unwilling to learn anything any more?

well seems like you don't want to do it yourself sooo...
go on craigslist and pay someone to root it for you -_-
I wonder if the guy can explain why he wants it rooted.

if you dont try, then you wont learn. Read the link and if you have any specific questions then ask.
the wiki is as "rooting for idiots" as it gets. if you can't follow the steps one by one, then pay someone to root it for you.
This is a sticky from here. Follow the directions to the letter. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160 It's not that hard. Just follow the DIRECTIONS. Failure to follow the directions will result in a high dollar paper weight. If you brick your phone it was by your own doing. Just know the outcome if you mess up.
Don't pay attention to all these people telling you that you'll "learn" if you really want it done. We were all new at some point, and I never have seen the usefulness in comments like that. Anyway, there are lots of us out there willing to help, post up exactly what you don't understand and I'll do my best to help you out. However, whatever you do DO NOT attempt perm rooting with visionary, your phone would most likely turn into a really pretty paperweight

i disagree with you. I have been here at xda for a long time and I relied first on reading instructions that have been posted a long time ago and when I had questions I specifically ask about the part I didn't understand not shoot first and ask later.
Here on xda since 2008. If he honestly wants real help then he has to make an effort to learn not just look at the wiki and just throw a general help cry. The wiki has the instructions step by step. If you have specific questions about a step or two, then ask that, not "I'M NOT A PRO, HELP PLS"
Speaking of root I can't have a pc so I can't downgrade to stock ota don't really want to either. I'm guessing only way to root is still going to need me to downgrade.

well, based on my understanding (I might be wrong) but I believe it is possible to downgrade from your phone via sd. Again, I might be wrong, but if that is possible then you might be able to achieve root once you do the downgrade. Otherwise, maybe you can borrow a friend's PC to do the downgrade.
Good luck
This should explain how to root.

What can I do with the root access?

My question can appear strange , but what can I do with a rooted phone like my desire Z? Because I read a lot about how to permanently root the desire z but, this is my first Android phone so if someone can help me to try to permanently root the phone... I want to try it without brick my phone... I read the guide in the wiki section but I didn't understand it there is something easier?
Thanks a lot

Haha thanks but is so difficult?

From [GUIDE][DZ] EASY Rooting, Flashing, Debranding and Basic FAQs for dummies:
- For rooting questions, please refer to the proper thread (rooting methods).
- Rooting an HTC Vision is a pain in the arse because there are many variants/versions, and not all rooting methods can be used on all of them.
- There are many ways to get root access: "rage" (ADB command line type) "visionary" (an APK installable app by paulobrien from Modaco) "gfree", etc. Using "Rage" is safer, "visionary" is simpler but many problemshave been reported, and "gfree" safer and most up to date.
- After using any of these, you can go further and turn S-OFF, CID-unlock and SIM-unlock the phone with "gfree", a safe and neat script written by scotty2 et al @ #G2root IRC. Sounds confusing ?? Just follow the instructions on the Wiki.

Is it hard? Yes.
Is it worth it? Hell yes.
As soon as you root your phone, you'll wonder why it wasn't the first thing you did when you got home from the store...
Follow the guides in the link I placed above and hopefully you'll figure it out in no-time.
Oh thanks lots my friend ok I'll try...
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I wouldn't say it's too difficult. Definitely easier than in the days of the G1. The benefits are definitely worth it too. Being able to transition to custom ROMs is probably the largest benefit.
Rooting isn't for everyone. If you take the Apple approach and just use your phone as a device to get onto the Internet and make phone calls and send texts, then rooting isn't for you.
If you want to take your device to the next level (use widgets to determine the weather, take snapshots of your desktop to ask for help or just brag about something, have a faster/overall experience), and if you are not risk adverse (...i.e., patient enough to wait for a custom ROM for Gingerbread or deal with CyanogenMod 7), and if you're willing to always look forward, then rooting is for you.
Oh, and if you're a developer looking to try something out... well, if you were then I guess you wouldn't be asking this question. ...you'd probably be asking how to unbrick your phone.

if you do not understand then stop or you will be worse off.
just read you will be surprised how easy it is

first of all i'm not a dude, second i did the guide of the rooting, i managed to do everything but there's a stage where the option doesn't appear in the recovery section. All i ask is for help. If you don't intend to help then don't bother replying.
Plug phone into USB, turn on debugging mode, run revolutionary, enjoy root.
Honestly, it's that simple. The people on here that are telling you that you "shouldn't bother rooting" if you have to ask this question are not saying that to be rude at all. It's a simple fact that rooting gives you privileges to sensitive system files that, if you dont know what you are doing and can't follow simple step by step instructions, can cause you to do extreme damage to your phone such as bricking. Again, it's a very simple process that you will be repeating very often while flashing various ROMs, kernels, and radios. If you aren't comfortable enough following the millions of step by step guides here on the forums then, for your phone's safety, you shouldn't be rooting. Keep reading the guides, scour the forum for the billion of other posts like yours, and then root AFTER you understand the ENTIRE process start to finish. I know you're eager to root your phone but such sensitive things should not be done without full understanding.
Again, nobody is trying to be rude to you at all. It's just that those of us more experienced in the subject know what can happen when inexperienced people try to blindly root, and subsequently flash, a bunch of stuff on their phone. Please try to take a step back and understand this.
Did you download the fastboot drivers and make sure HTC sync is not installed on your computer?
