Hi everybody,
As you can see to the left of this post i'm a 'brand new' member on this forum.
(well, user might be a better word).
In the few days i've been browsing around here i found so much good stuff that i whish i had known about before. I would have abondoned my nokia way sooner than i did now (although i still use my N96 as a 16GB MP3 player).
Since everybody in the Netherlands is emersed in the iPhone 4 hype, it was really easy to get my hands on a HTC Touch HD, Blackstone, for almost nothing. Almost as easy as 'hold your hand up and catch one that's flying around'.
Actually i got it from a colleague of mine. I started reading this forum when he said he'd sell his HTC when his iPhone arrived, which was about a week before i signed up. So i got my Blackstone, signed up for the forum so i could download stuff, and about an hour later (i had been reading for a week or so) i showed my colleague his old phone running Android 2.2 FroYo V1.6 from the thread by TheBrilliantMistake.
He almost wanted to have his phone back, but i had already paid him handsomely (in that i acted handsomely during payment, not the amount of small change he wanted for it).
I also learned about ORD, and must say i've diagnosed myself with it.
I've flashed about a dozen ROMs already, and stuck with the first one that actually turned out like the screenshots provided, which is the first one in this thread by NRGZ28. I read so many times 'using Energy ROM', and yes, so am i. (well, when i'm not running what's below)
Bit of a long introduction maybe to get to what i'm so happy about:
Blackstone T8282 with
XDANDROID 2.2.1 AOSP FRX04 from the thread by babijoee
clocked modestly but superbly at 600Mhz
1248 kernel from the camera-thread by viruscrazy
latest rootfs from Stinebd's RootfsAutobuilds
and not to forget my favourite and must-have addition to the startup.txt of snd.force_headset=2, which is in the thread everyone thinking about Android on a WinMo device for the first time should read, the general FAQ by TheBrilliantMistake
Running smoothly and sufficiently speedy. (not the 1255 kernel because it gives me incoming calls without incoming sound. neither the 'fast, fast, fast' build from tiad8's thread because it says in the Not Working section of the first post: 3.5mm headset jack. Tried it, it's true. Still admire his work and efforts and eagerly await a version with headphone support)
All i ever wanted. Right here on XDA.
You guys are the best. And i don't mean just the handfull in bold print mentioned above. Aaarrrgh, theDeadCPU, farukb, too many to mention, almost every post is useful and educational.
And now i even read a thread where i know the fix for the poster's problem, and i think i've made my first contribution.
Thank you all. This stuff is GREAT
Welcome aboard. I feel the same way. This board has taught me a lot. I've lost count of how many ROMs and nandroid backups I have lol

i have a feeling once i can gain access to the roms ill be feeling the same way, for now im cruising around lurking and enjoying the boards
You already have access to them. You just can't reply to the threads, as development threads are for developing, rather than asking for help or discussion.
Questions can be asked in general or q&a for the device
My first experience: discovered xda forums through google, and can't quit checking it out once a day to look for new ROMs. AWESOME!!!!
My first experience with the XDA Forums was when i got my HTC Pure (AT&T) in the mail. I was jumping for joy then realized that i had no idea how to unlock and rom it.
So i stumbled upon this beautiful well built forum for information, to my understanding if wasnt so hard to do. A little reading i was getting somewhere.
I announce as of Today at 5:30 my first rom installation is a success. Stable build.
On a personal note: I didn't even know this stuff til a few days ago, i was used to older phones. Thanks to XDA and there wonderful members my HTC is here to stay.
Heres my specs.

Requiring 10 posts is a little tedious if everything you want to ask about it in the Development threads but oh well. Good otherwise.

The forums are in a wide, flat hierarchy...
At the top level is a category for every device. Within it is a subforum for development, general and themes and questions etc...
From the index you can pick your phone, or you can start to type its name in the box at the top right, and you'll get taken to the forum.
Within the forums, the actual threads are like newsgroups, but replies don't indent obviously...

For the last 2 weeks, I've been reading the forum and waiting delivery on a unlocked/unbranded HTC TYTN with WM 5.0.
It appears the disadvantage of the AT&T release ROMs are speed and bloatware. I haven't seen any comments on the advantages or disadvantages of the official HTC WM 6.0 ROMs versus the cooked 6.0/6.1 ROMs.
Can anyone provide any comments on the official HTC ROMs? Sorry, if I missed it, but, I've been trying to cram as much knowledge as possible about this device and trying to make a decision on a cooked ROM or the official HTC one.
Thanks!

NEW THREAD on Opinions on the default HTC TYTN WM 6.0 ROM
I bet you didn't read anything on the open forums and you just asked your humble question...
GUIDE: on this website there is something called WIKI which has all answers to all Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I kindly ask the moderators to do 2 important things for our forum to keep it updated:
1- open a new thread and give it the name "SPAQ" (Seldom and Personal Asked Questions) to avoid openning new threads for questions like this one.
2- we have now 258 threads opened for Hermes and that makes searching for a solution never easy unless we delete the dead and inactive threads which exceed the 150 threads... unbelievable, isn't it?
thanks
PS sorry mate, I have nothing against you personally
Wow, it took all of 18 posts to obtain that attitude? I have bookmarked and read over 50 threads. I read the wiki, I read the AT&T HTC forums, I read the Howardforums, Aximsite/MobilitySite, this site and even joined HTC Club.
Many threads, tell you how fast a cooked ROM is or what apps are in the ROM, I don't see anyone saying anything about the performance of the default HTC ROMs besides AT&T ROMs stink. I haven't seen any threads on why some people actually prefer the default to cooked ROMs or vice versa.
Nothing against you, but if searching for a solution is never easy for a savvy veteran like yourself, what makes you think every visitor or new member will find exactly what they are looking for? Even in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=390603&page=4, you mentioned sticking to the default HTC ROM, you didn't go into details? If you would have just given the reasons why you picked the default ROM, that would have been extremely helpful, instead you assume I'm lazy and went on your soapbox.
I hope you gain some tolerance by your 25th post.
Cheers
I've been running the default 6.0 since November. I've been thinking of going to a cooked 6.0 or 6.1 ROM but have not taken the plunge. I have yet to see one thread regarding any that did not have several "It HR every XXXX days/hrs/min etc.. "
As of now I've had my share of lockups but nothing that a soft reset did not fix. While the AT&T 6.0 may be full of bloat it is the most reliable as I have not seen anyone complain that it Hard Resets.
Hope that helps.
HeyKrop, thanks for the feedback. ExactlyThat was my concern and wondering if the default HTC ROM would be better than AT&T, but not equal to a cooked version.
Right now, I'm leading to HTC's ROM and was hoping to find a definitive difference between that version and any cooked ROM. I'll continue "searching the threads" before making my final decision.
Thanks for taking time out to help a newbie.
(sigh) yes another thread on noob flashing.. guess it's my turn!
Hello,
i've been flashin my hermes for a year now and my advice would be.:
JUMP IN! the water is great my friend.
if your into flashin roms and learning from (experience). This is a good place to be.
There is wonderful talent here in xda, and the share their findings for us to learn and try out.
Don't be scared man! Just flash away!!
I recommend start with stock rom.. the move up to cooked wm6, theeeennn to 6.1's.. by then you should know the in's and outs
of your phone.
check some of the older schaaps roms. also search for my personal fav blackdragon.. he did a masterful job on a wm6 rom.
then graduate to 6.1..
-peace and happy flashing!
also...
If i remember correctly if you do flash the official ATT rom, you can soft reset the device right before the Carrier specific customization begins and interrupt all the att bloat.
I repeat again my dear friend/brother/... I really have nothing against you personally, and I am myself not that expert to answer all questions from everybody. I have a device and I'm trying almost everything on it because I know I'm dealing with software issues and I can reset whenever I want... so no risk at all in "jumping into the water" (thanks Joshkoss) as long as you read the necessary step-by-step guides.
I'm sorry for my intolerance, I surely didn't mean it to be.
PS I'm not counting my posts
Dude,
Come to think of it, When i got my phone, I didn't read one wiki before I started flashing... It's that safe!! Just make sure you have HARD SPL!!

he he he he , same here. i also did the same and after i installed hard spl. bcoz i wasn't aware of hardspl and i didn't read the deatils available in wiki section of hermes at that time.
also i agree with josh koss quote "jump in, water is great". i really do agree with him. but in my opinion there are alway some sort of bugs available in cooked roms and they are not perfect but the official roms are perfect and there is rare chance that there will be any bug in it. i've tried many cooked roms of 6.0, 6.1 and 6.5, but rite now i am using official HTC rom from last 3 weeks and i haven't face any problem yet.
but the decision is yours, so cheers
Sorry to waste a thread but I guess I have a point here:
Coming from Hermes and then Kasier communities (and flashing hundreds of SPL/Radio/Rom on my Hermes & Kaiser for many months) I thought that at least I am able to upgrade HardSpl or Radio or Rom on any PDA.
Now I've got my Diamond and entering the Diamond Rom dev I feel as if I've entered a new website.
What's going on here ? Chefs and developers have teamed up together and are divided into various groups competing with each other. Diamond rom dev is not having the cooperative feeling of Kaisr community at all.
There's no unified (bipartisan) thread for HardSpl. Each group is saying that our HardSpl is the best.
I understand that different ROM developers make different roms. But what about HardSpl and Radio ?
ROM threads are turned to Stickys???
Isn't it something new to this community?
Even HardSPl threads (directly or indirectly) direct us to certain ROM dev teams.
Am I the only person confused here ?
What happened to the bipartisan Moderators ABOVE rom chefs ?
In fact, as far as I can see, Chefs have become Mods and this weakens the unified and bipartisan feel we used to see in Hermes or Kaiser ...etc. communities and throughout the entire xda forum.
Is it only me ? Are there any other confused members noticing that Diamond ROM Dev is taking an unusual direction?
I don't know how it was before, but i agree with you. Rom teams are popping like mushrooms and the threads keep getting bigger and bigger. For a newbie like mee i needed a couple of days just to read in to everything because of the lack of clearnes.
If the Rom Chefs just worked together and share idea's than this would be just great. Then it's also easier to make different languages. Now it salmost all the time WWE en nothing more because if someone wants to do that, they loose the competition of the fastest release.
Also the topic starts can be clearer. Enormous pictures, lettersize 18, etc.... does not help. I think there are some moderators needed here that restore order and are not Rom Chefs
you are right
i am "just" a junior member, but if you check my account you can see i am here for a "longer" time.
so..
i came here from ARTEMIS threads and i feel the same as you but i did not want to mention it as a "junior member"
Old, well known, clever and cool guys went mad here in this section..
i am not sure why.
it "threatens me" a little bit, makes a pressure on me (sorry for poor english, i hope you can understand me.) i feel a little bit unconfortable. something like that.
This is why i made an own ROM based on STOCKs (thanks for HardSPL, for everybody who dumped the ROMs, etc..) and useing tweakapps.
(i don't want to use names....):
As i can see the guys who are makeing the tweaking apps are ok, but some of the guys who are cooking the ROMs has changed in this section.
anyway: ALL RESPECT for those who make DIAMOND better!!!!

I'm afraid my point was not about lack of multilanguage roms ...etc.
I do NOT even want chefs to work together and make a brilliant rom for ME. The beauty of any Free Society is in its competition , diversity and plurality.
My point was something else - well I guess i mentioned it in my post
Yea I agree . I have been on these forums a while and this is a bit messy and I guess very daunting if you are a newbie.
1) Please Sticky the ROM Threads
2) Please sticky the RADIO Threads
3) Please Sticky the SPL Threads
Oh and please, please, please, lets start pulling our resources together . I love to try out all the ROMS and if we share our knowledge aren't we in a better position to get what we al want . The Pefect ROM !!
I know I'll probably get shot down in flames for this and my software dev knowledge you can right on a postage stamp but I do know about winning teams.

You got another yes behind your remarks- Said but true.
I started with XDA Trion - Moved to TytnII and was pretty happy with the set directions- Mod support -bashing of newbies (myself included).
The Diamond ROM forum is "different":
- Not enough Mod's to have a closer look on garbage posted (Oliver- Mark...you do have my PM's )
- A lot of Newcomer's on the Diamond- a lot of reduntant threads.
- INDEED, confusing HardSPL - ROM signed vs. non signed messages. Pointed out the (smallest) finger to the Chefs already - But hey, we need them! So let's not complain - Competition is not bad bewtween them.
I called it already the "War of the Chefs" in a thread , so let us benefit of it though....---> TOO MANY Roms with mostly spin-off's of one build
I saw a message on BePe's thread from a guy asking for less ROM's but Final ones with bug's sorted out. For sure, no one is forced to Flash anyway, but it just fill's the thread's with 100.000.000 time WOW -Downloading now ! etc.
I believe that it is our duty as older dweilers to support the chefs in terms of newcomers direction set-up. They cook, we taste, we give feedback - advice and we don't ask for too much, cause it is free.
Anyway, again, I follow your reasoning and do hope first of all to see better Mod support on the Diamond forum. I know the guys are under-manned, so they should maybe look into a few new mod's (my time zone is very favorable to clean dirt between Australia and Birmingham - tip)
Cheerio
I do believe that we are only at the beginning of a Forum which will grow a LOT seeing the possibilites the Diamond can offer.

agreed. i started with Artemis, then TYTNII, now Diamond... and i have to say the Diamond part of the forums is a whole new beast
too many roms, so little time, are people forgetting that they purchased their devices so they can be used... its turning out that they are just being flashed constantly on a daily basis.
back in the hermes days, when roms were developed, updated roms would generally be released on a monthly basis after feedback was collected from peoples experiences with the current rom.
i still peek over here now and then to see whats up and it is a bit of a mess.
well, if the diamond forum is a mess, the touch pro will even be worse once wm7 beta is avail for it.
btw. im waiting for the touch pro and will be developing roms for it, but not wm6.1 roms as the kernel and OS itself is a pos.
I think the problem is the lack of structure. It's hard to tell which rom is new from which dev group. Everything is mixed up. A couple of rom devs started to put the date in front of a post with a new rom. I think that's the first step in the good direction.
Hmmm....
Listening........!

haven't we been doing this in Kaiser & other communities ? just look how attentively we (as a little bit more senior members) try to reply and solve brand-new n00bs in other threads.
this thread is different. how can i help a n00b when i myself am too confused what HardSpl to flash ?
this seems to be the beginnig of a commercial rom movement. it's not mentioned directly anywhere, but throught the whole thread I can hear this loud & clear :
We left things complicated , jumbled and unclear so that if you want to know what the whole thing is about , you pay for it.
I tried to seach "How to Hard Reset Diamond" for an hour. couldn't find anything. it's my personal feeling : it's beginning to get commercial.

everybody like to see that. But don't you think there's a reason behind this confusion?
Unlike all the other threads, there's an apparent lack of Authoritative Voice in diamond thread.
i coul'dnt agree more, this forum so so messed up.
Even DEV-teams has split an releasing roms as team members of that dev-team, and another member of that team is filling that thread with content...WHUUUTT, i cant explain it properly so hard is it to understand.
I think we need mods to take control and tidy things up a bit.
My vision of the ideal Diamond forum
Sticky:
- SPL's(soft, hard), just one, not a dev and a signed.(al spl's work great so why have many of them)
- Radio's(thread starter sums them up in order of release date and build number)
- Rulez of engagement for everyone who want to post here
Rest:
- For each rom dev team(or single person) one thread with rom info and downloads and the thread title started with a date.
- For questions and such, search first and then ask(NOOBS)
Ill inform some mods here.
gr
If you've ever been in Kaiser's forum then you'll know what's the diff between many versions of SPL. I dont' see why it has to be one SPL only if others make some differences. JockyW2001 knows better. He's been cracking and modifying SPL versions for Kaisers' users. It doesn't mean that Oli is not a good developer. He's the one who started it. Only that now we have our options. It's not their fault if noobs get into trouble trying to understand all of the purposes.Do you know why? Laziness is not tolerable. Lazy to read...Lazy to search...bla..bla..bla...
Yeah! I like this forum clean but not to the extend of " You should not develope any alternative for us! We already have one here!" Now, go to Kaiser Forum and read. Go to Hermes forum and read. Go to other forums and read. This is XDA-Developers Site
Sorry, I said what I want to say.

Or aren't there dedicated mods for the forums?
Hey everybody,
New user here, I'm on the forum for about 3 day now and i reached page 40 on aplications and themes, i have to say there are some cool stuff your posting here.
I'm also a new user of WM with the HD as my starter's kit (yah I like to complicate my life) and I reached the conclusion..it's windows! it's suposed to be lagqy, get stuck and have al sorts of annoying problems to be fix. I was bumed out for a couple of weeks thinking I should have pick the I-phone but when I saw the commercial for I-phoneS (WOW look what does it DOOOO, IT RECORDS VIDEOS WOW!!!!! IT COPY-PASTE's WOOWW!!! ) I changed my mind, and realized that the HD kicks I-Ps's Ass any time . I'm still not happy about the laggy-nes, as I read in some posts if I flush the ROM and get another one it can get even 20 times faster...is it true? Cuz I was looking at Laurentius26's L26_THD V3.55_WWE_Ultimate [Full Rhodium] and I dont know what to do, if i flush the stock OS do i lose my waranty?
Also it took some time to undestand that manila stuff and why some theme work and some dont(or i think i understand), on my device I have manila 2.0(i think ). Oh, I found one time on another site(cant remember witch one) a theme that i liked very much but for HTC TOUCH, it was called Scrap Paper, does anyone have it for HD or know what I'm talking about.
Oh, and I remember, for a 900$ phone (as it is in my country), they didn't finde a small spot for a flash?! And the headphones are very miserable and low buget (my opinion)! Very desapointed about these 2 things!!! wow I shure wrote a lot, hope you can help me with the rom flashing and the scrap paper theme....sorry if i borde you ..won't happen again
hey there.im also quite new to this forum and this is also my first time using wm.ive had my HD for around four months now.its hard for a newbie to find things anyway it was for me.if ur wondering about fashing check out flashing for dummies in rom development http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505377 it helped me.and yea u must be prepared to read a lot cos most problems are not new and some one has posted it some where.and if im not wrong the best way is to use the search
10x 4 the tip Sliv
As stated before most issues have been posted before so as long as you search you should be alright. Otherwise PM me and I'll steer you in right direction. Link provided above by sliv for the 'Dummies guide to flashing' is where you shoud post any further queries in flashing.
Try and keep each forum on topic, i.e. this forum is just for themes, applications and software. Any queries on ROM development or rom specific questions/amswers should be posted/found here. If you have a cooked rom on your device you do void warranty, but stock rom can always be flashed back. I suggest you read though thread link provided and the wiki for further info.
Just did a quick search for theme 'scrap paper' and got no results, so not sure its available. However if you ask someone politely who creates themes (lots of theme threads around) they may surprise you and make it . Obviously this depends on who you ask and how nice you ask them...LOL
Hope all this helps

I'm looking for some stable Roms to flash my Epic but don't know where to look for them with a good description of what does work- what doesn't-what will improve with it... Thing's like that. If anyone can help me, i'll apreciate. =)

Just look up "Samsung Epic 4G Rom XDA" on google and you'll find a whole selection of roms. Then just read their descriptions and some comments to find out what they're all about. I'm a little disappointed that this was you first contribution to the XDA forums...

Oh relax, it's all in good fun. We answered you .
But you'll have a lot of questions, we all do, and you'll get your answers faster 9 times out of 10 by checking if someone already asked them first.

Random's post was actually very humble, some people get crucified for not searching lol
We do need a clearer documentation of ROMs
Personally, I think OP's request is completely valid. There are a multitude of ROMS. The roms really don't have any specific vision statement such as "My goal is to be the most stable rom" "my goal is to be the most bleeding edge ROM" "my goal is to be the quickest ROM" or "my goal is to be the fastest ROM, even if stability suffers". Instead each rom seems to be a person who then does some personal tweaks and incorporates the generally available tweaks others have posted.
There's also not a clear change from version to version other than, (hopefully), the release notes which may list "teaked X", "changed Y" which doesn't help me understand if the next build is more stable, smaller, faster, or what.
Also, it's hard to tell the riger put into the software development process. While some ROMs are team built and significantly tested, it's hard to tell which. I assume ACS and Bonsai both have many people testing for many weeks prior to releasing a ROM, but I don't know that. And for the smaller ones, I have no clue.
Ultimately, it would help for someone who has enough experience with each ROM to document the differences. Alternately, a template for ROM developers to fill in each version might help. Something like.
GOAL OF ROM: (if multiple goals, list in order of importance to the developer)
DEVELOPER/DEVELOPERS: (by name, handle, or # of developers)
MAJOR BUILDS INDICATE A CHANGE IN... (time, tweaks, base build, etc)
CODE MANAGEMENT PROCESS: (formal repository, versioning in development package, 1 set of source files edited in VI with no backups or versions)
TEST PROCESS: (length of test, number of test subjects, any stress tests/unique situations/or boundary scenarios included in testing)
SUPPORT OPTIONS: (post on board, email development team, IRC, fire and forget, normal response time, etc)
You need to do what I and most of us did....read the threads following the ROM releases. Every phone is different but if 10 people on the ROM thread report Bluetooth issues and BT is important to you, don't use it. There are no info shortcuts here. Read the ROM threads.
Do you BONSAI?
Unfortunately, it's completely impractical to read through hundreds of posts per ROM to understand the pre-existing bugs with each ROM. Additionally, those bugs are tied to a build. The build they are associated with is usually not apperent from the posts.
The only way to keep up is to skim each rom regularly so you can maintain the current state of each ROM. it doesn't allow people to come in from a cold start and understand what's going on. That would be a good thing to add to the manifest listed above though:

Most of the big developers make an effort to list the large and recurring issues in the first page of the thread. Most other bugs tend to be one-offs caused by a bad flash or failure to wipe data prior. I understand where you're coming from, as I felt the same way when I first jumped in. Mind you, I got the phone in November of 2010, began actively following various threads within a few weeks, gained a vast amount of knowledge on the matter, didn't first root until the EB13 update in February, and didn't even sign up to the forum until March, after which I began helping others with problems I had found answers to months before even making my first post.
I don't preach hypocrisy. I generally criticize an oft-repeated question while also answering it or linking it to one of many long-existent answers. I preach learning by reading. If I tell you how to fix something today, you'll come back with a problem tomorrow because you didn't earn the knowledge for yourself, and you didn't understand what you did. The age-old parable:
"If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime!"
I strongly suggest everyone read as much as they can to understand as best they can! Take your epic to the toilet and read in your spare time!
While your idea is a noble one, it's a much larger undertaking than you're giving it credit for. Developers would have to collaborate to give a list of specifications, known bugs, etc. to one thread. Someone would have to oversee this thread, take in additional posts to this thread, and append them to the front page continuously. The end result would be roughly what each individual thread already attempts to achieve, with a much larger scale of chaos and a huge problem with out-of-date details.
The list Kenny linked contains a list of known Epic roms and their latest update. You could make this an XDA thread, but I can't say that trying to include every detail and bug beyond that of every rom is a good idea.
That said, look around. Find a Rom. Read about its details. If it sounds good to you, give it a test run! Use what works for you, don't obsess about which one is the "best".
-Written by a man with nothing to do during his lunch break.
No one should be "jumping in cold" and rooting and throwing on ROMs. I got my phone in September, read through posts on ROMs that had features I liked, then 6 weeks later rooted and tried a few ROMs. There are videos now in the General stickies to help cut down on the reading but as stated every phone is different right out of the box. One ROM may cause a messaging issue with a small group whereas another Bluetooth issues. Most developers list known bugs being worked on in the OP.
Do you BONSAI?
try this on youtube
qbking77 on youtube. put in search box 'How to Root Samsung Epic and flash SyndicateFrozenRom 1.1.0/1'. cannot post a link at this time, I'm too new
Actually, I read XDA every day (work's been slow recently). I've rooted my phone and installed more roms than I can count. (Also rooted my wife's and her viewsonic gtab.)
I agree that the major rom builders do a much better job of managing and documenting their development process than most 1-man outfits. However, I still can bearly tell the difference from 1 ROM to the next or 1 build of a ROM to the next. (As far as I can tell, what we have are pretty much the same ROM a dozen different times with slightly different bugs.) A standard for ROM developers to fill in would hopefully help them in focusing their ROM as much as it helps people in understanding the goals of their rom.
As for the effort involved in keeping it up-to-date, most of the worthwhile developers update their main post or start a new one at each major build. Adding some structure to that update wouldn't be a significant increase in hastle.
on a completely separate note, I understand where you are coming from with the "teach them to search" montra. (I helped moderate a very large everquest form for years.)
Since then though, I've realized that, while it's very popular on message boards, it's not very useful. You have to either have a very good understanding of where on a message board to look for the information you are interested in or you need to be a very skilled searcher. Otherwise you end up spending a significant amount of time pouring through poorly summarized search results which don't address your question without knowing if there IS an answer somwhere. While the (here are similar threads) function of vBulletin is reasonably useful, the xda search powered by google is impossible.
Wiki's form a MUCH better way of collecting answers to message boards than bulletin boards do. Unfortunately, you need your WIKI and your forum tightly integrated, (which means a CMS rather than vBulletin + mediawiki). Also, you need forum posters who, after answering a question on the forum, turn right around and post the answer into a wiki page to ensure it was there for the next person
(Actually, it'd be really cool if every Q&A forum on XDA, instead of pointing to a normal forum, pointed to a wiki answers type software install (http://wiki.answers.com/) tailored for XDA. That would hopefully significantly cut down on re-asking of questions. )

You can look in the development area, the threads are there for the ROMs. Typically the first few posts of a ROM thread will be the information about it. Then read a few of the pages (near the beginning and the last few) to get a feel for what users are experiencing during their use of the ROM.
That should give you the information you're looking for.
Good luck
I would suggest you look into the following excellent ROMs
Midnight v 5.3 which is based on Bonsai. This is my favorite and Rob is very helpful about his and other peoples ROMs
Bonsai itself which you have to go to their site for
Syndicate Frozen 1.1.1 from ACS.
Frankenstein when ecooce finishes the newest one. This is based on the ACS ROM
There are some other ones on here that I just don't know as much about. All of the developers use each others stuff so no matter what you go with it is better than stock.
You will learn a lot from your mistakes when flashing ROMs but the trick is to read a lot through the forums so you can learn from others mistakes.
Samsung Epic Midnight
(Sorry if this is on the worng section, feel free to move it if so.)
So, I wanted to post this when I had 1000 posts, but I acindetally let the post pass :/
Anyways, I will describe my good trip on XDA here.
First, I bought an HTC Touch HD (Windows Mobile 6.1) in 2011, which is the most stupid decision I could do but it was cheap, so... Anyways I was happy with WinMo for like a month, 'till I wanted something new, something different, so I wanted Android. I didn't know if this was possible, so I searched in YouTube for something like that (I usually search for these things on YouTube so I can see the comments and if everything is safe) and I found a build of Android Gingerbread that ran on the SD ( I actually only figured that out when I rebooted my device ), so I went and installed it. Everything went fine, but I had some questions. This is where I found XDA and asked my questions on the forum. Stilll, this build was too slow, so I wanted to fully replace WinMo, which was when I found tiad8 . com. This guy (tiad8) kanged a lot from the XDANDROID (original Android-on-HTC devs) kernel sources but he actually made a functional ROM for this phone. He was very insulted by the original devs and I don't have an opinion on that matter, since I used both of their works. Anyways, later fagyi (another dev) took care of the ROM for the HD and I actually made kernel progress and a lot of things for it to be a fast ROM, so I ended up using his ROM and doing a post of it here on XDA. The first post was blocked by the XDA mods crying but then fagyi posted the ROM itself and people still go there. After this ROM came out, I realized I couldn't use it since my phone got very hot (not on the ROM, actual motherboard problem) and battery was spent in like 2 hours. I had to buy a new phone, and I waited like 3 months to this, but on the last Christmas I finally got a Galaxy Nexus! When I got it I already understood a lot about Android development. Flashing ROMs was easy as pie (obvious, it's a Nexus ) and this is what I use now. I want to thank everyone on XDA that made it possible for my phones to be better and better by using their spare time to do this! Here are some names (not by any order) :
- fagyi;
- tiad8;
- ACL;
- arrrghhh;
- stinebd;
- HerrickWong.
Sorry if I forgot anyone.
Thank you XDA for these wonderful 2 years!
