Because ext4 was introduced after we had dk28. There is no point to developing on a dead os

Well it is. We have froyo about 75% of the epic users went to froyo. All the devs went to froyo. Ota is hopefully soon. So how can you say a 2 year old os ain't dead.

The same way my customer wants me to put XP on their brand new windows 7 laptop lol. Holding on to the past cause its "comfortable"
No it is more that I would like to see it done and try it out!
It shouldn't be all that hard to modify di18 to support ext4 as well. I think you just have to change the mounting of the partitions, assuming that the proper kernel module for ext4 is already there. Dameon87 would be the best one to ask about how to make a di18 kernel ext4 compatible.
They should totally make one!! Even tough official 2.2 should be out soon lol
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
yep lol, but soon enough we will have the best of everything.... or we better! then we can enjoy Froyo with all the goodies, and then start jonesing for Gingerbread, lmao.
Like mystery said its a waste of time when there is something new out, the developers try and try to make it the best it can be,
I was a bit skeptical to get on a non official release of froyo:
But once i saw apps and hulu which i couldnt have on 2.1,
and heard so much how bonsai rom was clean and fast and stable. I finally made that leap and im not looking back at all!!
i know have HULU, Andy 83 which is so sweet and Humans vs aliens which i am addicted too: and no issues what so ever,
Yes there was somethings that i needed to fix: like gps and mms but handcent is better anyway.
an old version of mixup i believe it was had ext4 support listed in the changelog. i was looking into this recently as well. i bet you it would be pretty damn fast. fastest thing out there. that is, until they release 2.2 ota and we do the same thing with jit.

Let me say this right off the bat the devs here are the best. I haven't tried any of the custom ROMs but from what I've read most people are happy with them.
So having said that I am wondering if Samsung / Sprint actually recruited the devs to help them make the best ROM available would it make the Android releases go faster?
My gut instincts tells me no. The devs here do it for the love of what they do and do it for free. I have to admire the talents and inspiration being put into the custom ROMs that we may never see in production releases due to the custom crap they put into it in hopes it all works.
Apple do have an advantage over this but still hinders innovation.
Bottom line is devs keep up the good work despite of us *****in at Sprint / Samsung about 2.2 and beyond.
Darkk
they didn't drop DK28 for no reason. they wanted the input.
Exactly. Why actually hire the devs here, when they can "leak" DK28 and get them to work for free. haha
I can tell you for a fact Sprint looks at XDA work...

Just had an overthought out reply about software development vs cooking.. but then read the OP and realized it didn't say google..
The devs here could probably match sprints work.. probably not Samsung..probably close but their not known as being the greatest software company in the world anyway..
Their are very different fields of expertise, and comparing these level of skillsets is like comparing apples to oranges..

Haven't seen any talk of this.
Any chance of our devs taking a look at the code and seeing what we can do in terms of new kernels for the Epic?
Why do people insist on posting source from other phones. A source from another phone is completly useless untill we have are source.
Are source code will have are specific drivers needed. No one elses source. The only time a source code from another phone is worth anything is if theres mods cooked in and then we can modify are source with said mods.

I understand that and I respect all the work the devs do, but I don't understand why it hasn't been undertaken. I've been rusty in linux but if we don't get source for the epic soon, I might begin taking a look.
FWIW, Vibrant kernel's support the Epic FFC and I'm more than certain a whole host of people would be more than willing to run a custom kernel that didn't have working 4g or keyboard.

It hasn't been undertaken because of the amount of work it is to reverse engineer that stuff. I know I would hate to spend a month or two getting it to work and then have an official update come out and make all my work pointless. The closest anyone has come is noobnl and the others trying to build CM6.
And also, you might be able to live without 4g and keyboard, but what about the radio? The Vibrant and Captivate are both GSM phones, not cdma.

You'd think it'd be easy enough being that is for the vibrant and amosher13 already has the Gingerbread theme rockin'...i do know that a545nova has some themes that work, but they aren't quite complete. You can find them here. The Gingerbread Hell theme is close to what you're looking for. There are a few problems with it though. The "3G" and arrows are still green for some reason and so is the battery charged indicator that pops up in the left corner of your notification bar. It also is missing a lot of the red themed icons. I have kept my wife's Epic on 2.1 just because of this fact.
I used to load custom roms on her old phone and it became a PITA trying to make sure everything was up to date, not to mention she never was quite understanding as to why it didn't "just work" when she came across a bug/"feature".
I bought the epic and kept it stock because I knew it would keep her happy for awhile. The only issues she's had on 2.1 is no flash and the GPS garbage. While they are both addressed in 2.2, i'm still not willing to flash DK28 and she's content to wait.
That being said, I have been very happy with The Epic Experience 2.0.07. It's very stable and runs great. If she "forced" me to update her Epic, I wouldn't have any reservations giving her this ROM.
I've really enjoyed ACS's roms as well but haven't tried their roms since Syndicate 1.0.2 (based off of DI18). They do great work.
Official 2.2 is coming soon....maybe...we hope....hang on a little longer and wait for a ROM that will "just work" unless she really has an understanding of what running a custom rom means.
Just my .02
Di18
+10char
The ROM out of the box. STOCK. Not only that, just wait for the release next week of Froyo assuming that is correct and will still come out.
My wife has a Blackberry, and even when I update the market she is like...what are you doing to my phone?
Women usually NEVER mess with anything on their phone. There are only a few of them out there like us who mess with things non stop.
If you install something and all hell breaks loose, you're going to have a handful trying to fix every problem she has. She may have none, but you are ALWAYS taking a chance with a ROM.
As you can see from the Dev thread, everyone has the same phone, but not everyone has the same WORKING phone. Some have no problems like myself, and some have 4 and 5 problems. You end up with that, you'll be fixing her phone and then hoping you do everything correctly. It is one thing to screw up YOUR phone, but hers? You'll be single if you do. lol
I would leave it alone.
Its funny how my sister is very technologically challenged but was able to jailbreak and maintain her iphone 4 all by herself and it works with no problems.
Id leave android to the curious/risky people and just get her an iphone4

I just read an article on PreCentral.net where a dev ported Android onto the Palm Pre and dual boots with WebOS.
How how hard would it be for WebOS to be ported to the Epic 4G? I'm guessing almost impossible, but I thought I'd ask. WebOS is a really underrated OS and I'd love to see it on great hardware, like the Epic.
Here's a link of the PreCentral article:

As far as I know, WebOS is proprietary source and annotated be ported to us unless there is a WebOS phone exactly the same as our phone (there isn't and never will be because it would have to have the same processor, antennas, etc.)

Thanks for that. I still have my Pre as a backup and wanted Android on there.

That's cool someone finally managed to do it. However if it doesn't have a hardware gesture area I'd rather just use android the way it is. Now if our capacitive buttons could somehow be turned into a gesture area, I'd try it.
Edit; I see its the other way a round.... I have a pre minus and an epic, why the hell would I want my epic in my pre???? Lol...fail

With the gesture area: I think the Epic has a big enough screen that a portion of the bottom screen could be the gesture area. Kind of like the Continuum?

Same here.. I'm even contemplating the 3.6 inch Pre 3... but I'm thinking it could be too small after using the epic. I was kind of hoping they would just license their software, like MIcrosoft does, and let other companies take care of hardware. I'd love a Dell Venue Pro with WebOS or an Epic 4G with WebOS.

So now that WebOS will be open source it's time to get a team together to see if we can port WebOS to the epic. Given that Android has been able to be ported to the TouchPad I would think some sort of a dual boot would be possible. Do we have the expertise here?
