I love my T-Mobile G2 dearly, but I hate the boring bootanimation that comes with it. I was wondering if there was an easy and *SAFE* way to change my bootanimation.zip WITHOUT ROOTING. It's not that I'm not versed in rooting, but my G2 is my reliable phone, and I'd like it to stay that way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You need to root in order to change the bootanimation.
The *safe* way to change it, is to root correctly, and correctly flash it.
Sent from my G2, CyanogenMod Edition!
You can change it without rooting by pushing your bootanimation.zip to /data/local/bootanimation.zip
Boot animations in /data override the one in /system and won't overwrite the original.

If I want to remove all wallpapers that are stock how would I do it through ADB or without, whichever method anyone knows of, Thank you.
No info yet on this.
Are you root? Snoop around the system folder with root explorer and you should find some.
In system/customize/resource I had some, but results may vary.

So I tried searching for this, but couldn't really find it, I basically just want someone experienced to explain a few things to me.
My friend says the G2 has one-touch rooting, or something, is this true?
Same person says the G2 is unbrickable, because of rooting-protection put in the phone.
And that it can be overclocked to 1.4ghz.
I bought a G1 and bricked it while installing DANGER SPL, I now want to buy a G2, and want to know what the risks of rooting and installing custom firmware on it is.
If someone could basically give me a detailed run down on it, that'd be great.
I'm pretty good with computers, I figured out how to use ADB and etc. I know my way around linux command line and stuff, but I'm pretty new to android.
Thanks guys,
Yes it is a one touch root app. There's really a lot to it technically wise but here's the jist. No custom firmwares yet. Root only lasts till you rebot. There's a new security feture and everytime u root your phone and delet any files on /system or make any changes it erases on reboot and goed back to normal. It doesn't mess with your /data at all all the changes you make screen brightness, sound settings, apps you download will still all be there but /system is write protected and you have to re root again and everytime you reboot. But the one touch root app makes this simple. Yes you can oc to 1.4 gz but its via a module witch again you will have to re apply the module wen u reboot. The module will still be there you just have to run a command via terminal to initiate it. G script will help you a lot
Edit: not sure if its unbrickable I'm not gunna give an answere on that cuz I don't know for sure. I'm sure there's always a possibility to brick wen u have root but in the case of the g2 I'm guessing it will be very hard rite now
There is no Danger SPL to use for rooting the G2 (I bricked my G1 as well..) As the previous poster said, there is an one touch root, but it only lasts till you turn it off. This means you can't flash any roms or anything, you can just run apps that require root.
Ummmm....besides the whole "G2 is unbrickable" question, try searching the entire HTC Vision: G2 forum....i.e G2 Android Development . Im pretty sure all of your other questions will be answered.

Hi, I'm looking to see if there's a way to change the bootanimation on my T-Mobile G2 WITHOUT ROOT. I rooted my nexus one, and ended up with all sorts of problems, and i dont want to go there again. i was wondering if there was a way to change the file without root. (using adb, maybe?) thx.

I dont see this being possible with out perm root bc your rewriting the bootanimation with ur custom boot animination which you need root access to the fone
adb push replacement-bootanimation.zip /data/local/bootanimation.zip
restart.
If it doesn't work it's because /system/media/bootanimation.zip takes priority over /data/local which means no changes without root.

yeah, you gotta push to /data/local/ a bootanimation.zip that you like.
I'm guessing you messed up on a step when rooting your N1. The only problem with rooting I got was when I forgot to flash GAPPS and the phone wouldn't boot

you cannot push the bootanimation.zip to /data/local , bcoz Google revoked the access to /data/local in Android 4.0 and above
And being this thread was from over 4 years ago my guess is that it was for a froyo ROM....
Either way what's an android without root...
Hey guys,
Firstly, sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology because I'm still quite unfamiliar with it.
Anyway, I just got my Desire Z about a week ago and am planning to root it so that I can access paid apps via Market Enabler.
I've read through all the guides on how to root and seems simple enough. However, I have a few questions regarding the default HTC applications.
1: Will I be able to continue using and updating the HTC apps (like HTC Locations, HTC Camera or HTC Car Dock) that came along with it after rooting?
2: Is is possible to keep the default SenseUI after rooting instead of getting a custom ROM that looks like SenseUI?
3: Will my phone stop working with htcsense.com after rooting?
4: Will I require a custom ROM installed into it after rooting, or can I just reuse the same default HTC ROM?
Basically, I love my phone and don't want to change anything except getting to access paid apps from Android Market. To do so, I would need to have Market Enabler working, which needs me to have Superuser permissions. Hence, why I need to root it.
Thanks!

Rooting is just rooting; nothing will change other than your ability to do whatever you want to/with your device. Just rooting won't change anything other than your ability to install apps which require root access.

Oh, so I suppose I was looking at the wrong rooting options then. The ones I've been looking at seems to flash the phone as well (unrevoked).
Guess I'll need to find a tutorial to just root the phone. Thanks!

Hi guys, I would like to access my /data/ folder inorder to import some save game states but have not rooted my device.
I am currently happy sitting on my stock rom, as tbh im alittle worried about bricking my handset which Ive had it since launch week, unbranded unlocked from t-mob uk.
I was wondering if there is still a way for me to temp root or just be able to access my data folder without perma rooting so i can swap a few files around whilst running 1.72?
thanks =)
You can't root 1.72, not easily atleast. You'll have to downgrade.
i saw in the faq that rooting my version would be difficult but was wondering if there was another way to alter files in the /data/data folders
