[Q] Difference between Desire(s) - Desire General

My Desire is rooted and I've installed the AuraxTsense 8.3 Rom.
The Desire of my GF is'nt rooted.
We note a very big difference in the brilliance color: the white is a little bit yellow on my phone and in general, with the same settings, my phone is less brilliant.
Should this caused by the rom?
thank for all the suggestion

No, it's the difference between AMOLED and SLCD screens.

how can I check this? is there any "code" or whatever similar to recognise?

No code, as far as i know you have to do it visually.
Read this, I think the best way is to check how the pixels are aliened.

Another alternative: show a black image in fullscreen and darken the room. If you cant see your phone it's AMOLED as black = real black. if you can still see the screen and it's just very very dark you have SLCD.
A bit more technically speaking: on an SLCD screen the illumination comes from the backlight which is always on and "filtered" out. Unfortunately that can not be done completely - every TFT monitor has exactly the same problem. On an AMOLED screen black means no illumination hence no light.

dang. i dont know that desire got two type of screen. live in the hole so long.

the original version of the desire was shipped with the samsung amoled screen, after samsumg realised they had an awsome mobile screen they decided to "F" HTC in the "A" and tell them they couldnt produce the amount HTC wanted, so HTC went back to the Sony S-LCD screen

Or simply look at the box, if it says "3.7 inch AMOLED touch-sensitive screen", you got AMOLED, and if it says "3.7 inch touch-sensitive screen", you got a SLCD.

That's weird. My box says 3.7 inch touch-sensitive screen. However, when I compared it to the desire HD's slcd display, it shown all traits of AMOLED.(true black etc.) Wonder why is that so?

How do I know if I have slcd or amoled?

Title says it all, any easy way to tell if youre not familiar with the 2

Hi, the safest way I'd say is to check the matrix of the display under the microscope...
If you have AMOLED, it would look like this:
http://superiphone.cz/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/nexusone.jpg
LCD screen would most probably look something like this one:
http://homepage2.nifty.com/akiyanroom/redbook/repro/comlcd.jpg
TIP: If you have an SLR camera, you can use your wide lens as a microscope, just unmount it and check the display though it with your eye. The point is to take a look from the other side than you would mount your lens on (I hope I've described it in a way it's clear... )
Or you could just read the box.... if the back specs specs on the screen say
"3.7-inch AMOLED touch sensitive screen"
you have AMOLED, if they say
"3.7-inch touch sensitive screen"
you have the SLCD.

[Q] how to tell if I have SLCD or AMOLED?

hey guys, I just got my Desire (loving it).
I got it without it's box. I know it's probably a stupid question, but I did a search on this, couldn't find an answer. How can I tell whether its SLCD or AMOLED?
my HBOOT version is 0.83, I noticed most SLCDs come with this version or 0.92, but its not enough for me to tell.
Any idea?
Thanks
hey, there is one way to check, the slcd screens use backlight which remains on when the screen is on. if you get a complete black picture, pure black picture, on the amoled it should look like the screen is off but if u got the slcd you can still see the backlight behind the lcd.
hope this isnt a stupid answer
still new to all this

thanks guys!
I'll tried to see how the screen is in total darkness (camera) still it wasn't really clear as it seems dark enough for me, no grayish stuff. However, I'll try to magnifier thing posted in the link above tomorrow.
Many thanks!
The Amoled screen will have matrix of visible dots about an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch apart on the unpowered screen if viewed at the right angle. The SLCD does not. How do I know ? I bought the 3rd one sold at the store on release day and just bought 2 more a week ago. They are different.

no it's the best way to check
Also you can simply look at the keyboard. If all the letters are perfectly clear, its an slcd. If it looks as if its an lower resolution and unclear you have the amoled

Differentiating SLCD and AMOLED???

Hi GUys,
i got a replacement for my old and definately AMOLED Desire.
I want to identify if this one has a SLCD or AMOLED
i have done some Googling and most sites stay on the following claim
"1. Check the box your Desire came with at the section Display: if it states "3.7 inch AMOLED touch-sensitive screen" then you've got an AMOLED display but if it says "3.7-inch touch-sensitive screen" then you've got an SLCD display. "
2. Backlight bleeding or grayish black image in a totally dark room hints you have an SLCD screen.
3. Slightly better outdoor visibility since SLCD displays offer a bit more contrast in direct sunlight.
4. Look at the screen with a magnifier, you should see subpixels in AMOLED displays as AMOLED gives text a jagged look in the edges. If not, it's SLCD.
5. Check HBOOT (power off your device, keep the Volume Down button pressed and while doing that, turn the device on). Most SLCDs come with version 0.83 or 0.92.
6. Last but not least, AMOLED displays have a slight red/pink tint to them. Check the overall image or a white screen and judge by the common sense of your eyes."
***My HBOOT is 0.75, The Description on the Box says its a 3.7" Touch Senstive Display, the Black looks true black, the perfomance in sunlight is equivalent to my older display. and no bleeding near the sides or near the LED***
***The phone is from T-Mobile UK and has a date showing July 20th 2010, 00:54:37 in the recovery menu*****
Source : http://pocketnow.com/android/how-to...d&utm_campaign=Feed:+pocketnow+(pocketnow.com)
Can others share on how you can identify the difference between two.
"Backlight bleeding or grayish black image in a totally dark room hints you have an SLCD screen."
Its the best and easiest way. or just klick on home when you are in a dark room, the black background should be really black with oled....

[FYI] AMOLED or SLCD - HTC response

FYI - Can HTC tell whether your phone has an AMOLED or SLCD screen?
Short answer:
No.
Longer answer:
I bought my phone from Orange and thus the box comes Orange branded. Therefore, it doesn't say on the box whether than phone is AMOLED or SLCD (referred to as multitouch or something like that). I contacted Orange who haven't got a clue and just told me is AMOLED by reading their stock description. I contacted HTC UK and gave them the serial number of the phone. They said that at this present time there was no way for them to decipher whether I had an AMOLED or SLCD screen. There may be in the future but at the moment there is not.
The one bit of interesting information HTC could provide is that 90% of their stock is AMOLED and 10% is SLCD.
The reason I looked into this is because I can't really tell from the videos online what screen I have. There are some murmurings that all SLCD phones are bootloader 0.83 (what I have) but unfortunately not all 0.83 phones are SLCD.

Already read that. And I'd say it's actually pretty difficult to tell unless you have their exact screenshots.
And a magnifying glass!
The box for mine said "3.7-inch touch-sensitive screen", but it has the 0.75 HBOOT, so I really need to find a magnifying glass to check it.

If it's so hard to tell why bother?
It really is easy to tell
Go into a dark room and go into the settings menu (which has a black background colour). If the black is lit at all or slightly grey, you have SLCD. If it is totally black (and I really mean no light at all) you have AMOLED. I have both and it really is easy to tell them apart in by the contrast of the settings menus, not so easy otherwise.

Because there are some rooting methods that require you to know whether you're on SLCD or AMOLED... Having said that there are workarounds but it would be nice to know which method before I start.
As for the dark room idea, I'll try it. Thanks.
I'm 99% sure mine has an AMOLED screen because the bootloader was 0.80 (before the 2.2 upgrade)
My box didn't mention AMOLED on the box (so it could have been either)
One thing I have noticed is that a block of white against a darker background appear to have a slight pinkish toothcomb on the left edge of the white block (eg the HTC clock widget that's usually on the main home screen.
I believe this is a sign of the pentile arrangement of pixels that you get in the Desire's AMOLED screen.
ie:
****
****
Without a magnifying glass though its difficult to be certain.
Do what I did:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7257878&postcount=10
Take a picture of the phone with a macro zoom camera. The pentiles become easily distinguishable.
i had both amoled and slcd side by side and all i can say is that the difference is huge...
if open your browser and set text size to large and than browse to xda forums... with amoled you won't be able to read clearly without zooming in, but on slcd you will be able to read and see everything clearly..
other than that amoled is brighter and has more contrast but slcd has a lot more clearer picture, that is easily visible when you put two phones side by side
for me slcd is a lot better.

A work colleague has just received his Desire and one of the first things he did was compare it to mine. He has an SLCD screen and I have AMOLED. When placed side by side the difference is gobsmackingly obvious. On the SLCD text appears far smoother, although the colours do appear to be washed out.
I agree that the SLCD is better, but I will say that I am more than happy with my AMOLED screen.

Ok, I exaggerated a little. I actually have an AMOLED Legend and an SLCD Desire. Just for my own sanity I checked again and the Legend AMOLED screen does have totally 100% blacks, even in a completely dark environment. I assume an AMOLED Desire would be the same and hence as easily identifiable.
If you think about it, AMOLED will always produce complete blacks as each pixel is not even powered for black output. The light you report to see on an AMOLED screen can only be explained by reflection. If your screen emits light from 100% black areas then you have SLCD.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
Well, one easy way is to put it next to your computers monitor while it shows a black image. The phone should be in the settings menu.If both seem about the same colour, you have an SLCD.If the monitor's picture seems grey while the phone's is pitch black,it's AMOLED.
I hope it helps those who don't have two devices to compare.
I have both the AMOLED and SLCD Desire. It's a clear difference. Mine has no bleeding around the edges. But It's clear to see the SLCD when the Call screen is on. The AMOLED is a lot blacker where as the SLCD is more gray than black.
The colours are also a lot more vibrant and alive on AMOLED, the SLCD looks washed out. The brightness is also higher on AMOLED.
You dont need magnifying glass. Droplet of water on screen will do.
I will be getting a Desire tomorrow or the next day and I don't know whether I'll get AMOLED or SLCD, so I want to know, are their quality worlds apart? Would it really make a difference to have either one of those? Is one better? How does both of them compare to iPhone 3GS's screen?
To the average person both are very very similar and you would not notice a difference without knowing there was two sorts of screens.
Chances are you won't get a choice of which to get, it just depends what is in stock.
Stat wise SLCD takes it on paper as being the best, but only marginally.
Honestly it really doesn't matter which you get, unless you compare two devices side by side you won't even know.
Because of the pentile matrix on the AMOLED, I would go with the S-LCD. The AMOLED is said to be over saturated in dark environments, and unable to read in the sun. I'd rather have balanced colors inside and readable screen outdoors. Also, the S-LCD have a real 800x480 resolution
Had both side by side for a while.
They are absolutely equal in bright sunlight. That said, people suspect that some amoled screens come out of the factory better than others.
Blacks, contrast and bright colours are absolutely better on the amoled
Bright whites and overall colour balance is probably a bit better on S-LCD
Pixel smoothness and small text readability is a bit better on S-LCD. That said, after you have amoled for a while you will realize that unless you keep your nose touching the screen, your vision will process the amoled screen the same way as the S-LCD. Takes some time though.
Battery usage: we made -accurate- -measured- tests, of the battery drain in milliamperes/milliwatts. They came out very close, the main difference is obviously that amoled display is optimized for displaying dark stuff. Overall I think you save a bit of battery with amoled, but anyway the results were that:
- on low-medium brightness (inside) amoled is almost always better. If you are displaying all white screen, they are closer
- on medium brightness it depends on what you are displaying (light vs dark) but there is not a lot of difference, although amoled tends to save a bit more
- on high brightness (outside) amoled almost invariably drains more than S-LCD, except when the screen is very dark. When displaying almost completely white screens at max brightness, amoled loses big time compared to S-LCD, but that is the only situation where this big difference happens.
One last noticeable difference is colour temperature, but that also varies from handset to handset. Amoled tends to be a bit on the warm side (at least on mine) and S-LCD on cool. The old 'problem' of the pinkish tint is gone with the froyo update, those few displays still affected by it could be counted as defective.
Oh and by the way, here almost invariably if the box doesn't say 'amoled' you are getting a S-LCD screen. I have to admit I was very surprised at first by the quality of S-LCD and mistaken it for a differently calibrated amoled for some minutes. Blacks are good, but not close to amoled, if you go into a dark room you should notice

How to know IF AMOLED OR SLCD?!

Hi.
Before anything. I don't have the original screen of this DESIRE.
I have the phone, I know it works because I can use Screencast with it and it makes sounds when I turn it on. It works 100%.
But since I don't have the original LCD I don't know If I have to replace it with an AMOLED LCD or with SLCD screen.
1-. These are not interchangeable, right?
2-. S/N is SH08GPL03124 P/N is 99HKZ041-88 , it's PB99200 T8181 EU Desire.
Best Regards.
For me it says on the box.
http://184.72.239.143/mu/59498a86-75ee-c9c6.jpg
Have you got the box? If it's amoled it will be written on it. I doubt a slcd could fit an amoled and viceversa, so even if the screen has been replaced it will still be of the same kind it was shipped with. If you can't find the box then you can still tell wether it's amoled or not by simply looking at something black on the screen: if it's amoled black colour isn't displayed, so it's the same as when it's turned off. Otherwise if you have a slcd black will look less intense, more bright.

This is how I test if my desire was amoled or SLCD. Firstly we must understand one of the amoled's feature which is "True black". This means the black color displayed on screen is extremely strong.
So, go to your room at night and switch off your lights. Click on settings page. You should see like as if the white texts are floating on air with a slight tinge of your hand's figure. Since the settings page, applications menu page is pure black, the blackness must be strong enough that it will blend in with pitch dark.
On SLCD however, its a different story. If you try SLCD with the above scenario, you can see a back ground lighting effect. You cant miss it. And the black color is not as strong as AMOLED's. Colors on AMOLED are more vibrant and strong compared to SLCD. However on SLCD, pictures look sharper because pixels are more dense per dot.
There is a youtube video that demonstrates exactly what I explained above. Placing two HTC desire (one AMOLED , and one SLCD) side by side for comparison. Search in youtube for AMOLED vs SLCD OR place "d5daNfccSiA" on the youtube link replacing the text after ?v=
Thanks for the answers...
I don't have the box and I don't have the screen of the phone! It was cracked and the last user removed it and dropped it to the trash.
Is there any way to know with only the serial number or manofacture date?
Best Regards.
Yes there is, if your device is manufactured before 27 July 2010, and if you did not purchase it as 2nd hand but from a retail store.. it is most likely that your device is AMOLED.
Read HTC announcement : here. HTC stopped using AMOLED in their phones and was announced on 27th July 2010. However it will take some time for retail stores to finish their old AMOLED stocks before selling the newer SLCD stocks. You can estimate from here...
Hope this helps answer your question
Put a drop of water on the screen to magnify the pixels. If you can see pink "teeth" around the edges of the pixels then your display is AMOLED. These are what cause the AMOLED screens to have a pink-ish hue to them.
