I just got my HTC Desire from US Cellular today, as I was trying to root, it wouldn't work. I followed the instruction and tried it on 2 different computers, I have noticed that my phone does have the Android 2.2 update already applied to it. Has anyone been able to achieve root with 2.2?

i got unrevoked v3.32, it works well on my phone. but i don't know how to upload it, maybe i can email you if you need(about 30MB).
BTW. as i know, before rooting you should shut down all of the process related to "HTC" in the Task Manager.
here's a video of installation of the drivers for rooting:

and the video of rooting with unrevoked (with links and all that stuff)

Just like all the previous times before i followed the instructions exactly as in the tutorials, and it gives this message.

I have 2.2 and i wanted to root my Desire today and got this messages :
error rooting firmwire to new ? and internal error : installing package failed
I found 1 thread that says we can't root using Unrevoked if we have hboot 1.06. Wonder when this will get updated...
I get the same message as the OP and would love to get the unrevoked tool or hboot drivers updated.
I'm 99% sure it has to do with the updated radio and/or hboot included in the 2.2 RUU that they used.
This is not a result of poorly followed steps according to current guides.
edit-
This will affect EVERYBODY who buys a new Desire with 2.2 installed from U.S. Cellular
It will also affect EVERYBODY who had S-ON prior to using the 2.2 RUU update downloaded from HTC. Regardless of other root access.
I figured it was due to the HBOOT version.
Well I'll start a bounty to the team or person who fixes this
I've got $15 i'll put up.

I couldn't root my 2.2 HTC Desire with Unrevoken3, but then after some searching I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
Following that I've downgraded my phone to version 2.1, then Unrevoken3 did the trick.
After that I've put Oxygen ROM 2.3 Gingerbread on my phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882758
That downgrade utility is for GSM desires not CDMA.
Oxygen ROMs are also for GSM phones only.
All US Cellular phones are CDMA

help would be greatly appreciated, i tried to be as easy to help as possible
You are totally all set to flash almost any evo rom....I never change set cpu.....but if its a concern if yours you can always un-check set at boot...
Once you download the rom.zip you flash it from recovery or directly from rom manager since you are using clockwork mod ...
Let me know if you have any other questions

Let me first say by just looking at your hboot I can tell you to be extra careful... now I don't know exactly what Rom you are looking at cause I didn't follow the link (on phone right now) but I can tell you, your phone has to have a specific kernel and make sure that Rom will work with your phone before flashing without the proper kernel.
In the thread just ask will the kernel that comes with the Rom work with your hboot. Other than that enjoy!

wow that was quick.
first off, thank you.
second i was going to flash this EVO-NonSense(UPDATED 12/31)AOSP+Gingerbread Elements,OTA 3.70.651.1
i am going to search the thread shortly for my hboot and see if it has already been addressed, thank so much for the warning that was exactly why posted this thread i really appreciate it.

Well the flashing of the Rom is the easiest part, the new hboot I think but I may be corrected, has to have the kernel with the new camera chips service jar. I would say always just read the first pg to see if the thread has a faq section. Also you did right by just asking, if you get confused just ask another question. Someone will eventually come along to help! Enjoy the community!

I have noticed that is possible to be done for HTC Desire to downgrade HBOOT from 0.92 to 0.80 without any problems. Did anyone tried to downgrade HBOOT of Buzz ? In theory is it possible ? Thanks!
Desire != Wildfire
Anybody tried this methode ? does it work ?
I have done some search and I have found out it MIGHT be possible to do it. I got the recovery files in place extracted the rom from a RUU. Now I need some HexEdit search. Seems like the misc partition on Wildfire (were the current version is stored) is not in the same place as the one on Desire. So definitely
Wildfire != Desire
If i manage to find the right combination I will try to brick my phone latter on
good luck i hope it works downgrading not bricking

Downgrading worked for some time now, but, it only downgrades Android 2.2.1 to 2.1. The HBOOT remains intact. So, to answer your query, no, there is no downgrading method yet.
You can get S-OFF on the updated HBOOT though.

No. Because 2.3 is only available as a Custom ROM so far. And, to flash Custom ROM's you need to be rooted, which you cant do even if you downgrade to 2.1 because, as I said, the HBOOT cannot be downgraded.
Hope it is clear now.

Yes it is through a specific hardware device called the XTC Clip. You will have to buy one yourself or find someone who has one and is willing to S-OFF your Wildfire for you. Just a search around here should reveal the specifics. Not very sure on that.
This XTC Clip, what specifically does it do? Couldn't someone who has one work out exactly what is does and then put it online? Sorry if this sounds stupid.

haha, I knew that! I wondered what it actually did... Like change a system file or do something to the SD card which allowed the phone to have an S-OFF Hboot installed.
I own a HTC Desire Z, and I have downgraded my software including Hboot using this method .
I have tried the same thing on my girlfriend wildfire and I managed to obtain temporary root, but when I tried to change "misc_version" to 1.24.405.1 I got this error:
Code:
# /data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.24.405.1
--set_version set. VERSION will be changed to: 1.24.405.1
Patching and backing up partition 17...
Error opening input file.
I know that this files are specific for Desire Z, psneuter worked only after I have downloaded from somewhere else (I don't remember where), but maybe someone will manage to edit "misc_version" and make it work on wildfire, then it will be possible to downgrade everything including H-boot.
the partition table is different on each model. that's one of the reasons why it won't work..

I think the only thing we need is to edit the misc_version and make it work on wildfire, I don't know if this is a hard or easy thing to do, but after that nothing will stop us from downgrading H-boot and gain root access once again

Did you try s-off with alpharevx? I think that it is the first thing to try. Search for it on wildfire android development. Just be carefull after s-off in wich rom to flash, or you can loose your 3g.
Like i said, i try (Alpharev, Unrevocked (Internal fail. Nand flash?) and Softroot)...
Look, i dont know your phone model, since mine is an European one, but do you know that alpharevx is different that alpharev, right? Just go to Dev forum, and the first or second topic has everything that you have to know.

When I first saw your OP, I thought you made a mistake in writing the radio and hboot versions. But your screen shot clearly says that your hboot is 1.01.0000 which is odd one AFAIK. How did you get that hboot (is it so out of the box). And you said wildfire (desire A), what's meant by that.
First of all, is your wildfire A3333 one. Check it under the battery or on the box. As the radio and hboot of your wildfire is odd , I don't know how it goes when you flash BUZZ WWE FROYO RUU. Actually one needs the hboot 1.01.0001 from this RUU which is compatible with alpharevx. So better wait for some more suggestions before doing something.

I tried for about 3 hours yesterday to root my G2 yesterday, but keep getting stuck.
Ive followed as many of the threads here as I possibly could, and for the most part Im able to get through most of the steps. My problem seems to be sitting at getting my firmware downgraded. Everytime I attempt, it fails. One of the issues I have is getting the eMMC to power cycle, no matter how many different procedures I try from people that have had the same issue, I just cant seem to get it to work.

Power-cycling the emmc is not part of the downgrade process.
You do need to downgrade though, here is a great guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912

Use Cyanogen's guide. I rooted three G2's with this method and it never went wrong.
If downgrading doesn`t work, but you have temp root, you may need to use a goldcard
Thanks for the suggestions. Ill give them a shot and post an update.

What a pain in the ass.
I'm trying to throw CM7 on a buddies Tmobile G2 and it's giving me nothing but nightmares. His is 2.3.4 w/ S-ON.... isn't there no way to root 2.3.4 on the G2?
I've never had this much fun trying to crack a phone.

You need to downgrade first; there's a guide for both downgrading and then rooting in the wiki both here and on the CM site.

Hi y'all, somebody gave me a DesireC, it needs "Scrubbed"
Really can't do much other than play with the phone coz it's got that "CarrierIQ" crap in it, never mind my good freinds phone number --
Got it to root and S-off, factory reset it, (her number still there, tried that 3 times) as well as boot screen from her carrier...
I've tried making a gold-card? Learned alot but never succesfully made one. There is uncertaintly in the instructions wether to reverse the HeX string needed for the Gold card. Or Windows won't format the SDcard rightly...
Wouldn't all this be easier using Debian? [Linux]
I just want it bare nekked, no carrier, no number, NO SNITCHWARE (carrierIQ)
Do I NEED the gold-card to make this phone anonymous? If so, please point to the CLEAR instructions
Thanks in advance --
Virginwidow
Try asking in the Desire C section. This is the Desire (bravo/bravoc) section.
Hi thank u for such fast response...
Waiting for the darn things battery to come back up or I'd copy the info screen --
but from memory (I've been lurking here and playing with it for several weeks)
it says it's
PB99400
bravoc
hboot 93
should I still move to other forum?
Thanks again

}
Then don't.
You don't need a goldcard for the 2.3 RUU.
If your phone looks like this:
Then change section.
Thank you kindly sir
My phone is 1st picture
bravoc DVT2 ship S-Off
hboot 0.98.0000
The dern thing won't let me RUU, as it's US Cellular apparently stock as I've tried "Factory Restore" hoping to clear my friends infoz off it
no joy, her number's still in it I'd be much happier if the phone number was blank, or xxxxxxxxxx (or whatever the default string is for a never activated phone)
Don't have (or see a need for) a carrier for it, coz I've not yet learned wether I can have it activated as a plain CDMA "No Gee" cell phone, If I gots Wifi I don't see a need for even 3g... It's loaded apps OK over WiFi. I'm a bit skittish even using WiFi till I'm sure it's clean with no CIQ
Once I get it's innards wiped (without any snitchware gunk) want to load a clean, battery efficient, more usable ROM (I don't need Fap-Book or Twiddler or games)
will loading a custom ROM remove the US Cellular crap and number?
Thanks in advance
Virginwidow
Yeah, installing a custom rom removes the apps from your carrier

well, so far the contrary little varmit won't let me load ANY rom,
keeps sayin error in /sdcard/update.zip
status 7
using the clockwerk recovery... going to try to force feed it an 4ext recovery image :crying:
There's a old post says if your desire/bravoc is "branded" mine is you gotta make it a gold card, thought that might be what's wrong?
I've tried everything fix the permissions etc... hell I loaded suse5 when I was a kid surely I can figger this out. For some reason the recovery thing is rejecting the ROM image
Thanks folks

which rom are you trying to install?
"US Cellular"?
Holy cow! it worked!
Cyanogen Mod 7, DL'd from clockwork Mod site -- I figgered don't try anything fancy (I tried some of the custom ones, the Slim Jelly Bean, for instance) ...
Naturally I hadda unbrick (I think? It was stuck in the HTC screen) a couple times before tried "keep it simple stupid" :victory:
I'm quite pleased with the ROM its ever so much nicer than that HTC crap == BUT IT STILL SEZ "US CELLULAR"?? How do I get rid of that?
THANKS

Hi abaaaabbbb63-
I got a old Desire CDMA (PB99400 Bravoc) with US Cellular. Unfortunately it is S-ON and I want to root it. The deal is that the HBOOT version is 1.09.000 and all the tools I have found are for HBOOT 1.06.000
Do you know if it is possible to downgrade the HBOOT?. My phone looks like Picture 1 in your post.
Any advice will be highly appreciated.
Cheers
D
