Whenever I try to play episodes of The Daily Show or Colbert Report from their websites, how well it plays back is completely random. Sometimes it's buttery smooth, sometimes it's extraordinarily choppy with 5 second pauses, and everything else in between. Doesn't matter if the phone just started up, or has been on for days.
Any way to guarantee smooth playback everytime?

probably make sure you have a strong signal or a good WiFi connection I am guessing if you do not have a signal of some sort you are going to get that choppiness you are talking about everytime. Check that out
Seems like a processor issue. Be sure you don't have anything running on your phone in the background.

Not sure why but sometimes when i search videos on the youtube app and click to play them it just says I'm unable to play them. I'll pull the battery out and search the same video and then it will play. Is there any way to fix this issue??

You can try clearing data in the app but my guess it is more stream related. Next time try toggling airplane mode on and off and see if that works. Then it is a 3G issue which you kick start when you pull the battery.
Do you BONSAI?
I ran into this same thing yesterday, and I cleared the data and everything was back to normal. Kenny was right on point, hope it works for you too.
Pulling the battery is a power cycle and seems to be the only fix. I have also noticed that after an unknown amount of time all video playback and even video recording stops working (android system, flash still works) til I power cycle. I'm thinking it has something to do with the in app between video ads. Anyway, I'm back to pulling my battery at least twice a day.
Some youtube videos are unplayable on mobile devices, like android and ios devices. This isn't anything we can control, the makers of the videos (usually music videos) decide whether or not the video can be played on mobile devices. You can try opening the video in the browser and playing it directly on the page, but chances are it'll be choppy as he'll

You pull your battery twice a day? I suggest a few things:
1. Get insurance on your phone
2. Put phone in driveway
3. Run that thing over AT LEAST 12 times
4. Get a new phone
If you're serious, you need to get a new phone because something is certainly wrong. I'm currently on about 120 hours of uptime, as in, time since the last reboot.

The power cycle is to force YouTube app to work. I watch a lot of video. The phone runs perfect otherwise.
Did you try clearing the data in the app?
Yes. Also force closed and cleared from app manager.
I had the issue where it force closed as soon as I opened it and clearing data didn't work. There was actually another entry on my phone that was causing issues. I think it was in data\data. I deleted all youtube entries (searched with root explorer) then cleared Dalvik and downloaded and installed youtube from market. Worked fine after that.
Same here, same thing happens to my visual voicemail, neither will work until I power cycle. Then they will both work fine for a while, then randomly stop again.

There are three different errors, "not available in your country", "not available on mobile devices", and "there was a problem while playing, Touch to retry" that last one is the one that makes the youtube app unusable.
I have lots of Stutter problems with the Gpad.
I have tried various ROM's but all doe have the problem, from Slimkat to CM11, from infected or from the original fork.
I seemed less with Mahdi, so i changed back to Mahdi 2.7, but still it is very bad.
The sympton: Micro stuttering, frame drops, screen and sound freeze, sound halts and buzzes. all in once for less then a second and random sometimes a couple of times in a minute, sometimes the time is longer.
When: While watching online stream, playing games, watch local movies from SD the same is noticed
What i've done so far, changed kernel, changed ROM's allways with a clean install, changed governer to interactive, even on performance, but never solved the problem.
It seems less with the new official bootloader from LG based on 4.4.2, but then the screen is dimmed on boot.
I can't remember this was with the stock ROM, i've heard others complain either.
Please let me know if there is a way to solve the problem, it is really irritating me and movies are unplayable.
It is just if some background process is taking all CPU power for a moment, or like on old computers where the irq's were wrongly devided.

I'm trying to find a solution for probably a problem which concerns everyone.
My Netflix sucks big time on my rooted fire TV. Stutters quite a bit. No combination of the video frame rate helps in the settings. What more can I do? I shouldn't have to wipe cache and restart every hour to get smooth playback. Thanks

Netflix has been terrible on aftv. Between the loading to 99%, and "unable to play this title right now" not to mention that atv2 has a much better resolution (for me anyway).
I was experiencing a stutter and I think I switched to WiFi to fix it. Not 100% on that but its working better now.

How'd you fix the two issues you mentioned? Netflix just started doing the same, for no apparent reason about a week ago on my FTV. I found one that here that was said to have the fix, but I've performed each of the steps listed there with no luck. Right now, I'm on 51.1.6.0... I tried the latest, but am affected by the HDCP issue, so had to roll back.

Not sure I did fix it. It may have got better on its own. You could try uninstalling Netflix, clear data 3 times in Amazon video, unplug for 10 seconds. Then it may be beneficial to boot recovery and wipe dalvik and cache partitions. Finally reinstall Netflix.
Mine occasionally doesn't load all the way but restarting the video fixes it.

I don't know what the deal is, but I've tried all of the suggested fixes, but continue to get the same error message. I'll wait for pre-rooted 51.1.6.3 and see if that fixes it.

Sorry. Overall Netflix on Amazon has been terrible for a lot of users while others seem to have no problems at all. They're not likely to provide a fix but it doesn't hurt to contact Amazon. At the very least you'll join a growing list of dissatisfied customers. Problem is Amazon points the finger a Netflix and vice versa. But like I've said before, Netflix has always been fine on my other devices going back almost a decade.

Yeah, the part I don't get is that it just stopped working for no apparent reason. It'd been working fine for months, then all of a sudden I start getting the "can't play video at this time" error (something to that effect). Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and feedback.

If it's any consolation... on 51.1.x.x versions of Fire TV, I never had issues where it wouldn't play video, but I did have studdering and slow/fast issues. On the 51.5.3.0 Fire OS 5 preview, all that has gone away and aside from an issue with 5.1 sound which is solved by putting it on stereo, netflix is working great.

I agree. Netflix performance actually gotten worse on the Fire TV since the latest official stable update. For months I been using it and it was fine but now once again I have issues where the video would freeze up for about 5 to 10 seconds then speed up right away everyone is super fast while the audio continues. Very annoying as I thought they finally fixed it but it came back again. Now I also been getting the "unable to play title" error again too.
I actually started to use my Apple TV 3rd Generation which is connected to Wifi 5ghz channel 36. Loads programs quickly, no stuttering, no unable to, no credit shrinking.
I've learned that having another video app open while trying to access Netflix is what causes the problem. The reason rebooting fixes it is because you essentially flush the FireTV's memory when you do the reboot. If you exit out of other apps fully, you shouldn't have anymore problems. I miss being able to click the Home button when switching between video apps but ever since I started doing a proper shutdown for video apps before switching to the next one, I no longer need to reboot to get the different video apps work.

That message occurs when you have another background application tying up the video process.
Try rebooting. And never use the home button to exit Kodi or any other video application. Quit it properly. And watch out for SPMC, the way it's been implemented to minimize to the home screen with the back button is really unhelpful on the AFTV.
Same goes for using Kodi as a launcher. Don't expect it to be reliable.

Hadn't considered that possibility; however, I don't use an alternate launcher and I always shutdown Kodi properly. Maybe there's something else tying up the video process? I've gone through the 'clear data' process on Amazon Video multiple times, but that didn't fix Netflix. I'll try to go straight into Netflix after a fresh reboot and see what I get.
I just got the Nexus 5X some 2-3 weeks ago. First week or two was smooth sailing after setting up the phone as a brand new phone in the initial setup process. I did not restore a backup from a previous phone.
Since then, I've had occasional freezing of apps like the homescreen freezes momentarily and becomes black and unresponsive only to be back to normal shortly thereafter. Likewise I had freezes with Google Music and Chrome. Today however has been my worst attack of freezing. I am reading some articles on Chrome and the bloody thing freezes like crazy. Scrolling is unresponsive and very rough, the interface becomes unresponsive. Home/Back/Recents buttons become unresponsive. I am not sure if the websites are at fault, they are salon.com and huffingtonpost.com that I am reading. And this issue seems very pronounced and doesn't go away in a short while like before. I still have the problem after like 10-15 minutes. Looks like other apps like Facebook are mostly okay, although I see a occasional slow down there.
I note that I am charging my phone while doing this browsing and I am wondering if the heating up of the phone due to charging is causing issues. Is this what people refer to as lag on this phone? Is there a solution?
EDIT: I used an app called "CPU temp" and saw the temperature to be around 39-40C. Also, I read elsewhere on XDA that the CPU is throttled at around 37C in the default kernel. So could this be why I saw all that lag? Now I don't seem to have any issues with Chrome anymore and I can navigate any page including on Salon.com fairly well although Salon is still a bit laggy on not just this but other phones I have, so their website may also have some issues.
Since a few months ago, when I try to record a video the recording stutters. I've tried different camera apps and the same thing happens. I had the same problem with my One M7 too. Anyone else with this problem?
Yes! I have also been having this issue. It feels like it happens more when the phone gets warm. Not sure what's doing it. Also it sometimes helps to restart the phone and it stops.
