Nandroid - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well this is gunna seem like a n00b question, but here it goes...
How do I do a nandroid backup? I am starting to get into applying themes and I really don't wanna brick my phone.
Mods- I did a search, and didn't find anything though all the Rom threads

Or you can make one in Rom Manager.

Okay, I have tried it before on Rom manager (didn't know that backing up the Rom was a nandroid backup at the time) but I'm not sure if it worked. When I go into manage backups it is just a blank screen(except the add)
Does it get sent to the SD-card then?

Otherwise boot into recovery and select backup.

I don't see a option titled backup when in recovery. But I have found my clockwork recovery file, so I'm not worried.

Nevermind all. I feel so noobish now, and have updated my clockwork. I now have a backup. Thank-you all
Sent from my SilverBullet "RootedHTCDesireZ"

What are the rules of thumb regarding when to do a backup? Before and after a rom flash? Before changing a theme?
Sent from my SilverBullet "RootedHTCDesireZ"

pretty much before you do something that might screw your phone xD

I just do a Nandroid anytime that I'm changing something. It only takes a couple minutes, and can be deleted after if not used, but it will save you from a lot of headaches.
If you're messing around with a ton of stuff you can always wipe your cache/dalvik before flashing something major, but this isn't totally necessary just flashing themes or addons.

Can't flash other ROM's after CWM issue

I was affected by CWM when I upgraded to 3.0. I can't flash any ROM's except for Fresh's. I've tried going through Rom Manager, manually downloading ROM, AR recovery. The ROM install will complete but when I reboot I'm still in Fresh's. I don't know what it did to my phone. I've even deleted the rom.zip and downloaded it again thinking it was a bad download. From here on out I'm permanently switching to AR so if you guys can let me know what I should do.
By the way I list my backups. I did have a backup of UD but it won't restore in CWM. Will it work if I copy the backup from CWM and move it to the Amon Ra folder? I don't want to try it and possible make things worse.

Yes I need help on this, too. I wanted to go to Myn's rom and can not at all. And I believe I read backups are not interchangeable between CW and RA.
You need to restore amon_ra 1.8 as your recovery and then reflash your rom. Cwm backups are not compatible with ra.

I tried that. I re-downloaded the ROM's, placed on the root, flashed in Amon Ra and it completes but doesn't boot up. Out hangs at the white htc evo splash screen. The CWM broke my phone.
I'm trying to avoid flashing the stock RUU and rooting again. I'm guessing there may be a file thats conflicting. By the way I deleted ROM manager permanently.

you can do this using cwm(rom manager) , if its greyed out then dl the latest amon_ra1.8 and put on the root of your sd card, then try again thru cwm. thats what worked for me.
But yea the latest cwm update isnt something to get excited about. doesnt play nice on some evo's.
stick with good ole faithful Amon_Ra and start flashing from recovery, not from some app. its always stable and not to mention wipes correctly/easily
Any tips? I need to get my AOSP rom and Sense ROM loaded.

[Q] cant flash alt recovery via rommanager

Sorry in advance if this is a duplicate. I could not find the an answer on my own. ( go ahead call me a noob)
I have tried cm7 savaged zen and deck roms and at this moment it seems that I cannot flash my alternate recovery thru rommanager. Rommanager will show clockwork 3.0.0.5 but when i reboot to recovery it will still be Amon ra. rommanager is still working fine on sense roms. has anyone else experienced this issue. PLEASE Help.
Also I have noticed That the Rom pickings are becoming slimmer on Rom Manager, anyone have any insight into what is going on there. and is there something i should have known before paying for Premium. (just curious)

Same thing happened to me and allot of PPL you will need to flash the PC36IMG .ZIP of cwm but I suggest staying with ra its way better and just download ROMs from this site and flash them from recovery just my opinion.

Oh and not many dev put their ROMs on there because cwm has issues flashing allot of these new ROMs they use different scripts and cwm is known to not wipe properly when flashing I think I know I had issues with it and went to ra v2.3 and never looked back.

[Q] Evo Root Fail

Today I tried the new method to obtain S-off and root my 2.3.3 Evo. All went fine but now my phone will only boot into the clockwork recovery tool. How can I fix my phone or get it back to normal?
Have you tried to flash a ROM?
You can try to download and flash a ROM from this site.
Also can you get to your bootloader by pressing volume down and power if so you can find an ruu to put on your sd to put you back to stock.

I tried to flash a cm7 but I got a status error 7 so I am downloading synergy now.
Make sure you wipe everything but sdcard.
Also its possible you got a bad download I also recommend using Amon ra 2.3
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I tried installing Synergy but I got the following messages:
assert failed: write_raw_image_("/tmp/boot.img","boot")
E:Error in /sdcard/Synergy-RLS1-supersonic.zip (status 7)
You might have a bad dl are you downloading from your phone on 3g.
And you should try this recovery I had nothing but problems with cwm when I first rooted and went to ra and never looked back.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
You can also try flashing this before you flash a ROM it will wipe for you and don't worry it won't wipe your sdcard.

First thing first make a nandroid backup then you can download that vr-superwipe I posted but I'm not really 100% if that works in cwm recovery but when you wipe wipe everything but your sdcard well you don't really have to wipe stats but I don't even think that option is in cwm.
You should really think about switching to Amon ra 2.3 if you haven't you can even flash it from ROM Manager.

Sorry for bringing this dumb thread back to the top but I couldn't start a whole new thread for one of my stupid questions. I wanted to know if a nandroid backup backs up everything? Like, could I do a back up then wipe my entire phone of everything, install a new rom, and then go back to my old rom from loading the backup?

[Q] Please help an older lady

Last week, I rooted my Sprint HTC EVO 4g using directions I found on this site plus the revolutionary site. All I did was turn S-OFF so I could do wireless tethering with my phone - I did not change the stock ROM - it worked great and I thank you for all you do here.
However, today Sprint sent an OTA update. I know I should not accept it. However, how do I get the update? I have been reading on this forum and I know that the wonderful developers create Sprint stock ROM updates, but I do not know how to choose the correct one and update my stock ROM.
Could someone please advise me on what I should do - or point me in the direction I should go to find out how to get the update?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Hey,
Yeah you are right about that ota can unroot and damage your phone!
Alright to do this you will need to flash a rom! this link below is a tutorial how to do so! just scroll past all the rooting guide and follow the directions how to flash a rom! Make sure to do a Nandroid first! then wipe your data cache and Davlik Cache!
http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/03/h...flash-new-rom-and-kernel-on-your-htc-evo.html
Then download the rooted o'xed version of the rom and place it on your sd card! and just follow the instructions on how to flash! This is the latest ota of htc sense and it runs great Brad is a great guy and makes great things! and this is just is the stock evo rom with update!

Remember you will loose your data text apps and so forth! so you might want to use titanium back up to save your apps and data first!
Be sure to nandroid
Be sure you wipe!
Have fun good luck and if you need anything pm me!

Don't use rom manager on the evo amon ra and amon RA style recovery are the only ones that work properly when. Wiping cwm doesn't always wipe properly and causes issues and rom manage does not work without cwm recovery

With out clockwork mod recovery rom manager is useless you can't flash or wipe anything with it as it uses cwm to do so, so if you are using amon ra or amon RA style supersonic recovery(my preference) then rom manager becomes useless besides doing it in recovery you're not trusting a script to do it without screwing something up
We are legion, for we are many
Its worth noting that the if you want to keep the same sense rom (like the one your have before you root) stevos link to brads page will be the best.
an app that would be worth downloading before you flash a rom if its your first time is titanium back up (and super user assuming you have not installed it already) titanium back up will allow you to save (back up) your apps so when your flash the rom you can reload the apps that you have now onto the new installation. I hope this helped!
Here is a wiki it list stock rom's and costume one's for the supersonic (HTC EVO).

Latest CWM?

I have been running AOKP ICS for a while now and I had TWRP as my recovery. Well after flashing around a bit I had to reflash a rom and was unable to inject TWRP for it to boot. As a result I have CWM 6.0.1.3 I think. Is this the latest and why would I have a backup fail to create a MD5, therefore rendering that backup useless? CWM seems fine for flashing and wiping, but backups are super important. Any help would be awesome!

I'm kinda in the same boat. I ran into this issue when I was trying-out CM9. Now I'm on CM10 9/14 Nightly, which installed with CWM 6.0.1.3. I'm ready to flash the NS4G modem AIO and give it a spin now that the roaming issue is fixed. However, I want to be safe about it and run a nandroid backup first. If I can't restore my nandroid using CWM 6.0.1.3, can I use 5.0.2.7 with CM10?
Can I just CWM flash 5.0.2.7 over 6.0.1.3 or am I better off flashing TWRP?
Thanks in advance,
Al
Why does cm roms install a recovery any ways?!? I remember back in froyo rom days around hear. Some Devs *****ing about roms installing recoverys & apks to /data/ every one at that time came to agree that Roms SHOULD NOT INSTALL A RECOVERY.
I mean if a new cm rom needs a new cwm recovery then FLASH the new recovery reboot recovery & flash the rom

Believe it had to do MTD. Last I read about this, been a while, the 5.5 version of CWM was specifically for MTD and the 5.0 version was BML. I could very well be incorrect, but that's what I recall reading a while ago.
5.0.2.7 works on MTD

OK -- Now I get why I couldn't flash 5.0.2.7 over 6.0.1.3 when I was trying to get back out of CM9 a month or so ago. However, I ended up Odining back to stock and installed TPR MTD and I could swear that I ended up with CWM 5.0.2.7 on MTD.

Yup. I've never been able to restore a nandroid using 6.0.1.3. I always get an MD5 checksum error. To be honest, I haven't tried in a while, but that was my experience a month or so ago when on CM9. I have no idea if the problem lies in the CWM backup or the restore process.
I'll give it another shot now to see if I can backup and restore my CM10. Stay tuned.
