Last week, I rooted my Sprint HTC EVO 4g using directions I found on this site plus the revolutionary site. All I did was turn S-OFF so I could do wireless tethering with my phone - I did not change the stock ROM - it worked great and I thank you for all you do here.
However, today Sprint sent an OTA update. I know I should not accept it. However, how do I get the update? I have been reading on this forum and I know that the wonderful developers create Sprint stock ROM updates, but I do not know how to choose the correct one and update my stock ROM.
Could someone please advise me on what I should do - or point me in the direction I should go to find out how to get the update?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Hey,
Yeah you are right about that ota can unroot and damage your phone!
Alright to do this you will need to flash a rom! this link below is a tutorial how to do so! just scroll past all the rooting guide and follow the directions how to flash a rom! Make sure to do a Nandroid first! then wipe your data cache and Davlik Cache!
http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/03/h...flash-new-rom-and-kernel-on-your-htc-evo.html
Then download the rooted o'xed version of the rom and place it on your sd card! and just follow the instructions on how to flash! This is the latest ota of htc sense and it runs great Brad is a great guy and makes great things! and this is just is the stock evo rom with update!

Tips:
Remember you will loose your data text apps and so forth! so you might want to use titanium back up to save your apps and data first!
Be sure to nandroid
Be sure you wipe!
Have fun good luck and if you need anything pm me!

Don't use rom manager on the evo amon ra and amon RA style recovery are the only ones that work properly when. Wiping cwm doesn't always wipe properly and causes issues and rom manage does not work without cwm recovery

With out clockwork mod recovery rom manager is useless you can't flash or wipe anything with it as it uses cwm to do so, so if you are using amon ra or amon RA style supersonic recovery(my preference) then rom manager becomes useless besides doing it in recovery you're not trusting a script to do it without screwing something up

Its worth noting that the if you want to keep the same sense rom (like the one your have before you root) stevos link to brads page will be the best.
an app that would be worth downloading before you flash a rom if its your first time is titanium back up (and super user assuming you have not installed it already) titanium back up will allow you to save (back up) your apps so when your flash the rom you can reload the apps that you have now onto the new installation. I hope this helped!
Here is a wiki it list stock rom's and costume one's for the supersonic (HTC EVO).

Hey guys, I have the latest ROOT done by Unrevoked3, it has the clockwork mod, and my phone reboots just about ever other minute.
So I talked myself into it, I'm like "Hey why not do a custom rom? Maybe Cyanogen or something?"
So I'm lost. I have no idea what mod to install. I need it to be a .img file, too, because that's what Unrevoked uses.
I don't want the stupid sprint stuff, I just want the cool, brass and glass speedy phone. What do I do?
If you have clockwork recovery just go into it and load the cm6 .zip file?
I couldn't find it on the wiki.
Link to how to "load" ?

easiest way is to buy rom manager premium from the market...you can download and install different roms within the app and if you don't like it you can just download another one, wipe, and install...you don't have to use you're pc atall.
but you have to be on clockwork recovery to be able to use rom manager..
awesome thanks. But I'll lose all my info/apps everytime I load one right?

Nope. Nand unlock is still required by cm like it is by many roms. Unrevoked won't get you there.
That's what I thought......i may have mis read the op's first post but wanted to clarify for myself and the op that cm 6 will not work with unrevoked

You should always wipe when flashing a new ROM. Just back up all your apps with titanium backup or mybackup pro. Your contacts should be back up'd by Google.
No. well you can use apps like Titanium Backup, that you can use to backup any apps and their data, but other than that, you just need to sign back in to e-mail and gmail and fb,twitter, ect...
Use your Nandroid

If you're fully rooted with recovery, reboot your phone while holding the volume down button and you should be in either the Amon-Ra or Clockworkmod recovery.
From there explore your menus a bit, and you'll find a place to do a Nandroid backup.
Do that - it will literally back up everything - your kernel, your stock ROM, your apps, your data, all to a nandroid image file on your SDCard.
Then you can wipe everything in your recovery and flash whatever you want.
Now you can play with other ROMS, learn to flash alternatives and such, and if you ever need/want to go back to how it was, just go back into recovery and choose a Nandroid restore.
Also if you use clockwork nand you can restore your apps after youve changed the rom. Flash your current rom first, then wipe everything the new rom needs you to. After flashing the new rom to the nandroid and select advanced restore. Select data and your done. Reboot and enjoy.

If your going to back up your rom to flash another one use RA recovery to wipe and backup your phone. Clockworkmod does not do a proper wipe of your phone and will leave remnants of your old rom on your phone.

I followed the rooting process from a YouTube video & I did back up during the root process .
I'm not sure what's a nandroid & I think I had to go through some part that had clockwork mod but again as I said I'm not sure what it is . ( I'm sill a rookie with this sorry )
What should I do next ? Did I back up the stock Rom properly via UnrEVOked 3 rooting method ?

Did I lose all the stock Sense rom that came on my Evo? And if I did, Is there a way to fix it?
I'm sure I'm not the first person to do this but I haven't found a thread to answer my question. All help will be appreciated!! Thank you!
Yes you lost your stock ROM but you can just download a sense ROM and flash that you can also find a stock rooted ROM on this site if you want that
To make a nandroid back up you can either use rom manager app from the market and do it that way or make one from recovery you should have cwm recovery so you might want to use rom manager for now its easy and you can name the backup.
Hope that helps you.

Yes, you can flash a stock rooted rom. They can be found in many of the stickies here. It will flash just like you flashed cm7, except obviously you will be back to factory, i.e. no apps, etc. But BE SURE TO NANDROID BACKUP YOUR CM7 ROM BEFORE DOING THIS.

Yes, you lost your original rom and no,you cannot get it back, however, you can flash an official HTC rom for the EVO. You can download a rooted stock rom from HERE. I suggest the ODEXED version. After you've flashed the rom, go into recovery and make a nandroid backup of it.

Thanks everyone!! I downloaded Speedy's (Misfit's) Sense Rom. I did this time create a NAND of my CM7. Flashed the Sense rom and fixed my GPS glitch that Evo has with CM7 and Im back to normal. Works great! Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and help!
the latest CM7 versions should have fixed the GPS issues..
even with the fix in Sense... and with the latest CM7 version.. I myself still get a few issues here and there with GPS and the applications that use it.
i found it best to download GPS Status from the market which will help in getting the GPS to work... and even with that, sometimes i have to even toggle the GPS off and on to get it all working.
remember.. TI is only for apps.. you make sure and do a nandroid backup thru recovery every time you wanna mess with something.

"Googly eyes"
Hello,
I am having some serious issues with my Evo. For several weeks now my Gmail accounts have not been syncing at all, incredibly frustrating, to say the least. I was hoping that the Gingerbread update would take care of this, so I followed all the instructions I could find, downloaded the de-odexed zip update, booted into recovery, wiped davlik, then installed that zip, and it seems to have updated (I'm running 2.3.3 now, that's the updated version, right?). However, not only has that not solved my syncing issue, but now when I went into Titanium Backup, it said that it could not establish root access! Also, when I go into ROM Manager and try to "Manage and Restore Backups," nothing comes up, when I know there are 3 backups on there (I was trying to delete one of them to free up space on my SD card).
Maybe related are the terrible space issues I've been having. It's also for some time now been telling me that I'm running low on space, but I have moved virtually all of the big programs to the SD card and deleted things I do not use, so I really don't understand how it's having such space issues.
Anyway, I really need some help here. I guess the number one most important thing I need to figure out is why I am no longer rooted. Can I just reroot like I did in the first place? But I'm also very bothered by this syncing problem, and the space issue is not far behind.
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

In the meantime, anyone have thoughts on my storage issues? It fluctuates like crazy, goes from 50 MB+ free, down to like 4. Driving me absolutely crazy!
Hey guys, I just rooted my phone a few hours ago from the tutorial here on this site for my android 2.3.3 hboot 2.16....well i finally got to root it and got really excited. THe main 2 reasons i rooted were for wifi tethering and terrible battery life. Bought an extended battery before but didnt help much.
Anyway i think i flashed it lol with superuser? ( i backed up files with rom manager and myrombackup) I just downloaded set cpu with the following settings
enabled check notifications check
screen off priority 100 245 max 245 min performance
charging full priority 50 998 max 245 min ondemand
battery<75 priority 50 806 max 245 min ondemand
So my question is, are these good settings? how much better do you think my battery life will be with these settings?
oh and do roms and kernels come in like the same zip file? where i flash them together? and which do you guys think is best for battery life, but similar to the evo stock rom? i dont wanna change my phone too much, i like it, just didnt like the battery life...sorry if this question is redundant, but most of the threads i found were really old so i didnt wanna put in an old rom or kernel if i dont have to.... THANK u guys so much before hand.
If you want to stay stock there are a few roms in the development forum that are stock with bloat removed and minimal mods. You might check some of those out.
One example is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249615
The next step would be a ROM that is ported to the Evo but with a stock look. I am running MikG which I think is one of the best.
A ROM will always come with a kernel that will be flashed with it. You can always flash a different kernel over it later. Freedom is a good kernel (see my sig for a link).

If your looking for a stock rooted ROM with good battery life you might want to try a froyo ROM with an sbc kernel you will get almost 2 times more out of your battery and its the same old sense 1.0 so you won't even notice a difference.

What recovery are you using ?
I recommend amon ra 2.3 if your not already .
If you already backed up your ROM from recovery "nandroid backup" then you don't need to do it again its just in case something goes wrong so you can go back to it.
Yes download the ROM from here and the kernel then wipe everything except your sd card and battery stats "you can wipe your battery stats if your battery is at a 100%" then flash the ROM and then the kernel.
If you get any fc's after first boot fix permissions if that doesn't work go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot that will fix most problems.
Hope that helps you out.

wow, you're super helpful
i actually used the superuser backup- from this thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218386
what's the difference between that and amon ra 2.3?
also i did a backup from the recovery and also from rommanager.

As this ROM now uses the latest official HTC Kernel (#15) you MUST update your Radio/Wimax. I recommend Calkulin's combo update which is available here or via direct download here.
Installation Instructions:
Download Rom and Radio/Wimax updates and place in the root of SDCard.[/B]
umm does the kernel come in the same file as the rom that i download? and where do I get the radio/wimax updates and what do I do with them? do i flash them too and when?
(should I get a separate kernel for better battery life? some people commented that the battery life wasn't great with this rom, so should i use a different kernel?)

umm does the kernel come in the same file as the rom that i download? and where do I get the radio/wimax updates and what do I do with them? do i flash them too and when?
(should I get a separate kernel for better battery life? some people commented that the battery life wasn't great with this rom, so should i use a different kernel?)

Superuser is an app the let you allow root to apps that need it.
You want to make a backup from recovery its called a nandroid backup I think you have clock work mod recovery you might want to switch to amon ra 2.3 you can get the link from my sig.
When you make a backup make sure to backup your wimax keys I think cwm does it on its own in ra2.3 you can pick and choose what you want to backup.
I'm not sure what radios your on but you should be good if you had 2.3 on your phone when you rooted it.
The ROM comes with a kernel but its the stock kernel give me a minute and I'll post a link to the ones that work with it.

For the recovery zip make sure its on the root of your sd not in any folder then boot to your bootloader not recovery you can download an app called quick boot to do that or just turn your phone off then hold down volume and power when it comes to the bootloader it will automatically scan for the update just hit volume up to except it then you can reboot the phone or go to recovery.

So if I use rom manager I dont have to go to the bootloader screen? or do i have to do both? I already went to rom manager premium, then used alternate flash and now it says current recovery RA recovery v2.3 and latest recovery Clockworkmod 5.0.2.2....
Do i do a nandroid backup after setting up amona RA?

No you don't have to flash it then I just forgot about rm and flashing it that way I don't use rm anymore only to fix permission.
Now when you go to recovery to make a backup go under backup/restore/ nand backup and select what you want to backup leave the ones that are checked then check android secure ,sdext if your sd is partitioned , and wimax I believe thats all I backup .
You don't need to backup recovery or cache .
You should also make a backup of just your wimax keys that way if you lose them in a flash you can restore just that and not have to restore a whole backup.

Thank you so much! I did it both ways anyway lol, I'm currently doing a nandroid backup for everything, then doing it juts for wimax. THen ill copy them to my computer and flash drive just incase.
Ok, so i think i decided, I'm gonna get the [ROM] Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo - [RLS 5 - 01/07/2011] - and for the kernel im gonna flash, 4.3.4-cfs-havs-more-sbc (More Aggressive HAVS) (can u make sure that's the one you have? and does it have at least 12 hours of moderate use? i text a lot, thats about it..)
ok now can you tell me if I have the steps right please?
- I'm going to download the rom Download Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 5 (Mirror 1) and paste it onto the root of my sd card.
- Then I'm going to download the kernel 4.3.4-cfs-havs-more-sbc (More Aggressive HAVS)- and paste it to the root of my sd card.
- Then, I use quick boot to go into recovery, then I wipe what I have to wipe/factory reset, then I flash the rom....
- THen I dont have to wipe again, and i just flash the kernel...THen, I can use myrombackup to get all my apps and the information in the apps back...
Should i use set cpu with this rom and kernel? and is thiss correct? lol- I'm really excited btw thank u sooo much---and oh the kernel i have on my phone right now is kernel version- 2.6.35.10...

Use mybackup root to backup apps and data then use it to restore them.
Yes it sounds like you got it wipe everything except your sd card, battery stats and screen rotation I'll post a like to a super wipe I use that you can flash to make sure you wipe everything as well.
Then flash the ROM then the kernel then reboot.
If you get any force closes go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache then under other run fix uid package mismatch or what ever its called that will fix permissions from recovery.

Flash this before you flash the ROM it will wipe everything for you do the wipes on your own as well.
After your all done you should download the app battery calibration and calibrate your battery to get more battery life it wipes you battery stats you can do it from recovery but you should just use the app it will tell you what to do.
