[Q] Rooting problems? unrevoked (rooting done) Now i need !!Help with gapps!! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I didn't wan't to start a new thread for this so here goes nothing.
Now i'm trying to figure out how to add the gapps for CM7. I downloaded a gasp and tried to install it from recovery mod. But maps won't install and neither does gmail and the market won't download any apps and no google apps on the phone.
All suggestions are highly appreciatet.
Thankes in advence and sorry for my english
Ps. Software: 2.29.405.5

1. you can't backup without rooting (not a FULL backup anyway)
2. did you run unrEVOked and then connect the phone or was the phone already connected when you started it?

I tried to start it with the phone unplugged and start unrevoked then plug it in and tried having it plugged in when i started unrevoked.
It was like what ever i did it would not recognise the phone was plugged in.
And for the backup question was mainly wondering about all my apps, pics and contacts would i loose that all?

Have you installed and un-installed HTC Sync to get the drivers from that?

And i have tried having the phone in charge only and hard drive when i plug it in.
i went to uninstall htc sync but it wasn't installed (atleast didn't show up in unstall) so i didn't install and uninstall it. Do i need to do that?

Yes as it needs the drivers - install it and then uninstall it leaving the drivers

i'm going to try that now thanks but does any of you now about saving my contacts?

Get My Backup from Market. Easy to use.

Thanks guys it worked !

Upgrade to 1.32.651.6 failing

Everytime I try updating my phone OTA it starts and then it fails by showing a picture of a phone and a question mark above it. My phone is rooted I rooted it following a video on youtube by zedomax. But I guess it didnt work after I went through everything so then I use unrevoked and it worked. Unfortunately I been getting a lot of sd card errors so I really need this update. Someone please assist me in this.
You can't update a rooted phone using the downloaded OTA. You'll need to apply the rooted update.zip found in the upgrades forum for 1.32.651.6. Flash that in recovery and you'll have the latest ROM with root.
Thanks so much you really assisted me in upgrading my phone. If anyone else has the problem I did here is what I did. I downloaded the zip file from here a post by flipzmode. Just search the firmware thats what I did.
After I downloaded the file I placed the zip file in the root of my memory stick and I turned off my phone and turned it back on while holding the volume down button first then the lock button on the top. Once in the bootloader menu I went to recovery and the exclamation mark in the triangle showed up then I ran recovery-windows.bat and then I flashed the phone from my sd card and selected the new firmware.
Hi, do you have to reinstall all your apps and reconfigure the phone again? I rooted my phone, and I am not seeing any issues with the SD card. But I would hate to reconfigure all over again!! Please let me know.
Thanks.

Unless you have Titanium backup, you have to reinstall everything if you flash any roms. Try switching to wifi, go to your market, and into the downloads section. You may get lucky, and the apps that you have downloaded will be there, but you have to download them again. Being in wifi will speed up the download process.
Thanks for the info.
I use appbrain, which is pretty cool to create a backup of your apps. But even with that, you still have to install, and the worst part is configuring apps (user name and password) and also configuring my scene in EVO (folders, widgets, etc...) I have done this process 2 times and to do it one more time would be a pain. I am thinking if I have to do this everytime I need to update, might as well go unrooted. The only reason i went to root was to delete some annoying apps and to run wifi tethering. I rather leave with those two drawbacks than reconfiguring my EVO all the time when a new update is out.

app updates - downloads not starting anymore

I didn't update my apps for about 2 weeks since I was more or less in a permanent network trouble. When I now try to update my apps, it's always said, the downloas are about to start, but they never do...
I am running froyo 2.2 and app 2 sd - no idea what's wront here...
hope somebody could help me out!
thx
Very occasionally my downloads stall and to fix it I generally:
1. Cancel all downloads
2. Check that I'm logged into Talk
3. Start the downloads again
This usually fixes it for me.
Regards,
Dave
I also had this from time to time and usually after a reboot it worked, but this time it already persists a while and the updates are getting more n more.I also thought that I started too many at once. But also a single one won't start...
By talk you mean gtalk? Why is that?
Thx
Essentially (and rather simplistically!), for many services, the OS uses the GTalk protocol to communicate with the device.
Regards,
Dave
Didn't know that. How do I check? if I click in the freak icon after a second I'm back on the desktop with that icon. Does that mean I was logged in?
Me too...I'm having problems to update my applications and when I click on Google Talk the application makes me return to Home
Any problems with Google servers???
Thanks
GTalk is working fine for me, so I suggest posting a logcat for the period when you attempt to sign into GTalk.
Regards,
Dave
I assume a logcat is a certain type of logfile? How do I generate this?
thx
If you have ADB setup on your PC, you can simply connect your phone via USB and type ADB LOGCAT in a command window (you need to have USB Debugging switched on). If you don't have that, you can download an app (e.g. aLogCat).

Dave

no, haven't installed this. Is it also necessary to install it on the phone or just on the computer?
installing on the phone would be quite cynical

Yes.
There's nothing to install on the phone, you just need to enable USB Debugging from the Development menu.

Dave
Right, i experienced exactly the same problem shortly after doing update to 2.2. I've read somewhere (if i find a link, i'll post it here) that update from 2.1 to 2.2 doesn't carry personal data and settings transfer very well.
Tryed restore to no luck.
My fix.
1.Format memory card first.
2. factory restore
3. format memory card again (in case it managed to back up my settings after 1st format and before restore)
4. factory restore (in case back up happend and it managed to restore my settings)
5. sign in to google ******@GOOGLEMAIL.com , even though my e-mail IS @gmail.com and it shows @gmail.com on the phone.
No problem since
Hope no 3 and 4 make sense to you.
Hope that helps.

As you can see i simplified procedure a lot.
still trying to figure with the ADB.
I am stuck with the USB drivers - can't find them in the download package as described
Finally, you need to install the USB drivers. Again, the instructions are present in the SDK guide as well, but here’s how you can do it. Please note that my device was a Samsung GT-i5700 Galaxy Lite, and since I had Samsung drivers already installed, this didn’t happen to me. The procedure I am describing here is theoretical and taken from the SDK manual.
The drivers for both x86 and x64 systems are present in the SDK, under <sdk>\usb_driver\x86 and <sdk>\usb_driver\x64, respectively.

I'm really in need for help - more and more apps are getting out of date and I can't update them! I just don't know where to find those mentioned USB drivers!

Try my fix. Yes, I know, you will have to start from scratch with the phone, but it's worth it.

I appreciate your help - but I'd really loive to check within the logfiles what's exactely wrong, dause that could trace the root and help others instead of just starting all over.
I'm just surprised that there's little response out here...

Use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 ir works every time as long as you follow it to a tee. It is longer and requires more work, but it is definitely the most fail proof way.

Usually a factory reset will help with that, either that or your antivirus may be picking up on the exploit. I forget which ones do it but some will pick up on that.
oh ,ok so if you dont do a hard wipe sometimes wont root?? and can i use the factory wipe thats listed in the phone? thanks
Just use unrevoked. Its the best and fastest and easiest way that I've found

[Q] z4root error message

I have been using z4root for a while. Today when I pressed wireless tether I got a message. Unable to tether is your device rooted. I am using version 1.3.0 I tried reinstalling the software. That did not work. When I root my phone it says I am rooted when I press wireless tether I get serveral messages the first one says sorry but your kernel does not have all necessary features for running this application. I tried pressing ignore then I got message that this application will not work properly. Then I get message that says unable to start tethering is your device rooted. My software z4root says I am rooted and seems to work. Yet the wire less tether does not see that I am rooted.
Yesterday I got the update message on Android incredible. But it did not work. Got the not enough space message. I did move a lot of my apps to my sd card could this be the problem? I also have enabled acess control in wireless tether app. Also enable wifi encryption is checked? I still have version 2.2. Please help me I love using this.
Why don't you just permanent root with unrevocked?

I was afraid it would do something that I did not know how to reverse if I do not want it permanently rooted?

Is safe and if for any reason you don't want permanent root there's way to go back stock/unrooted

Well in the developers world we call it permanent because you can restart/turn off and the device stay rooted. Unlike temporary you restart and the root is gone

I tried unrevoked. Downloaded all software. It went through all processes and keeps getting stuck after rooting. Says phone temporarily lost comunication. Can't seem to get past this error message?

Your default connection type has to "charge only" and "never ask". Also, you have to check "unknown sources" under settings>applications, and usb debuging has to be checked.
Have you installed the adb drivers on your pc?
Also htc sync can not be installed in your pc when using unrevoked.
Here is a great beginers guide to rooting and what to d after rooted.

I am thrilled, Got. Phone rooted. Used 4share app. Downloaded 4zroot.apk app. Installed it. Looked like it did not work. Stuck on rooting. After I powered off and on phone was rooted. I have only used this for tethering. Is there any way to save battery life with rooted phone.

Yes! Flash a custom Rom and Kernel and you will see a great improvement on battery life. The best kernels I have used with great battery performance are Incredikernel and Gingertiny. Do some research first then start flashing, and make sure you do a backup before flashing anything.

Does backing up rooted phone mean that I have all my downloaded apps and data on either my computer or my sd card. Is there anything else I need to back up? Right now I only have one program that I downloaded that is not from the market. All my contacts are on my gmail account?

When you back up with recovery it backs up your entire phone to the clockwork folder on your sdcard. It is highly recommended that you copy the backup folder to your pc on a regular basis just in case something goes wrong with your sd.
Ok just downloaded clockwork. Haven't really done anything else with the phone since it is rooted. Other than get wireless hotspot.
I am just learning about Roms and Flashing. What OS system would you recommend for the incredible. I installed Rom Manager. That is where I got clockwork from. Seems like an easy program. Do I need to erase anything on my phone manually before I put a new OS system on it?
Never mind just rebooted and everything is there.
Just backed up my sd card. But Now it shows empty on my phone and it says sd card needs to be mounted when I open ROM manager. How do I get my stuff back on the SD card? I just copied it to a file on my computer. I do not understand what happended to everything on the card.
PLEASE HELP
I clicked on clockwork recovery it went through the process. When I look at the clockwork file on my sd card it does not say anything about a back up there are some files in download folder is that the backup? Is there any OS that I can install that won't wipe the phone clean? And if I do wipe the phone how do I put back my stuff like ringtones etc.
There are a ton of things you can do to save battery life... Search the threads and you will find a lot of info....
Some things to start with... Turn off phone finder, use ROM toolbox to increase WiFi scan intervals, use sleep mode at night, don't use ES file explorer, etc
Lots of options

HELP! USB no longer works! Broke my phone!

I have an Xperia Arc S with rooted Sony ICS on it.
Please help! I can no longer get USB to work. I uninstalled some apps in Titanium Backup without backing up first (idiot) and I then installed a custom SystemUI.apk (bigger idiot). I rebooted and no longer have the bar at the top of the screen. If I connect the USB cable nothing happens! I want to do a repair but can't get Windows to see it!
EDIT: I plugged it into my laptop and it's detected and installed PC Companion. I am trying a repair right now. Hopefully it should be OK. :/

See you are nearly there with repair of the phone. As a way of testing if USB is working can you charge it via plug socket if yes then USB is not broken, just a bad driver on pc.

Also I recommend you to use my tutorial + list on how to remove junk apps to keep your phone 100% working

Thanks guys. I already followed that list before the mishap. Not sure if it was anything on that list that caused it. I think it was defo the systemUI.apk change. I was trying to get the facy taskbar with the enable/disable buttons on the Arc S (the APK is for the Arc which may be why it b0rked). I don't know why Windows on this PC decided not to recognise it but after a reboot it now detects it fine (But I have just repaired it and reinstalled all my apps + root).
I need to get CWM on it really (I'm a bit scaredy cat to hack the bootloader) so I can just do flashes from SD card. I think I will leave well enough alone for now though.
The apps I have backed up and uninstalled are Let's Golf. OfficeSuite. FUN&Downloads. Update Center. Wisepilot. Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited.
Are all of these safe to remove? I can do a restore if needed.
The other things running in the background that are bugging me are Custom settings. SecureClockService (what are these?) and CrashMonitor (Is it really OK to kill that?). Plus of course SIM service and Google services which I take it I need.
Maybe I should take this to that thread you pointed out to me.
Uninstall all those apks
Theres a list of all apps which you can remove
Check general forums

hey guys,
