If you're talking about when Sprint/HTC are planning on upgrading the phone to Gingerbread officially I've heard rumors of August 2011. Of course, that's simply a rumor.

LOL Joy. OK was the rumor going to keep HTC SENSE?

Yea HTC has recently invested more in sense on other Android devices so its a safe bet to assume sense will be on it.
Swyped from my Evo on steroids.

Who knows for EVO users but 2.3 is dead. Mostly because it does not run Honeycomb apps. The new version is 2.4 which will run the same apps as 3.0. Sounds like it will be customized for dual core devices.
Unless something gets ported it looks like 2.2 might be last official update for EVO.

what you think Sprint will do? Just say eh, and move up or will be another updated to fix the battery issue.

My guess is with all the new devices coming this year the EVO will not receive anything beyond 2.2. Maybe some tweaks here and there. Concentration will be on newer, dual-core devices that can run apps like the tablets can.
On the flip side of that.....the new Kyocera Echo has about the same specs as the EVO so if it gets updated no reason why the EVO wouldn't. But, who knows. Personally, I don't see the Echo having a very long shelf life.

Will Desire be updated to Android 2.2?

I read a news from the following link
http://marmarday.com/?p=7239
It says N1 will be updated to Android 2.2 on the Horizon, and what about the Desire?
i think it will but there will be a slight delay as HTC need to update Sense to work with 2.2 whereas the N1 has no overlays so can be updated as soon as the update is released

I wouldn't count on that.
HTC Hero used to be the top of the line before the Legend and the Desire came out. I think the Hero was launched in September, but until now the latest """Rumors""" say it will be updated to 2.1 in June.
Not to mention, android 1.5 on the Hero has limitations, which naturally should become a reason for updating, but yet, that wasn't good enough.
So worrying about it is just a waste of callories
But when the Desire gets rooted, we'll have plently of cooked 2.2, 2.5... etc Roms
If 2.2 is when their "Defragmentation Solving" thing comes into effect then probably yes.
Because in theory, HTC wouldn't have to do anything, sense and all the apps would happily run on top of 2.2 as separate apps.
They had better... Flash 10.1, DivX and 720p recording depend on it.

Still, it will take HTC alot of work to migrate to 2.2 in the first place. After which defragmentation concept can be applied.
Anyway, the complexity of it will be clear when that feature is out.

Flash 10.1 is definitley in FroYo. DivX and 720P recording was something HTC promised to be released in an update after the desire was launched so to me it makes sense that FroYo would be the update.
Look at it this way...HTC supposedly take such a long time because they build Sense to integrate tightly with the underlying OS. It's hooked in. The direction Google is taking is going to mean Sense is a separate self standing app/service...so HTC now have to re-write it probably from the ground up. That's not a trivial task if that's what this means.

You're right, all these are promised to be coming to the Desire, and Flash 10.1 is rumored to be coming to Nexus 1 with Froyo.
But that doesn't mean all these features require the update to Froyo, at least I hope so, or the Desire will have to wait for a long time.

I can't wait to root mine. Good thing is that it won't affect the warranty unlike the Nexus One.
I REALLY hope that the seperated update stuff will be here sooner than later. I am actually quite surprised since I got the Hero that it's not in Android to start with.
And it's the only way Google can avoid fragmentation, which imho is one of the biggest threat to the platform so far.
Warranty issue also depends on where you live. They can put in as much warranty void thingies in as they want. But when my phone has a hardware issue and they don't want to fix because I changed something in the software they will be in trouble. And then they can try and prove my software change damaged the hardware.
I thought it was the other way around?

Also, don't forget that HTC has access to early builds and source of future versions because they are building terminals based on it. Porting Sense is probably being done right now, they don't have to wait like we do.

Any word yet on Android 2.2

Is there going to be an upgrade for the desire ?
Would love that ! (Flash)
Any body got some info ?
of course will be, the question is when?
thats quick ....
Are we talking months or weeks untill 'droid 2.2 comes out
The internet is being a bit tight lipped.
The deisre is lovely, but not finished yet.
flash is nice, divx is vital and 720p video is something I wsan't expecting...
How are we going to get it when its released?
Will it be a user ROM style hardware flash through PC sync or will i just download a file to my phone, click go and 10minutes later my phone is amazing??
(i'm having fun wiping smug faces of iphone owning freinds as they ask what phone I have and i show them, then tell them I've got it for £15/mnth )
you'll get it here on XDA as usual. ready to be flashed on your device as any other ROM
2.2 aka Froyo: maybe next week!!!
I read this on engadget:
Engadget's post about Froyo
I don't really want to root my phone as it's I think really good as it is but I wouldn't say no to Froyo! especially since it apparently boosts performance a lot!
Quote form Engadget: "Update: How much faster is a Nexus One running Froyo? 450 percent faster, according to the Android Police. They claim to have a device running the as-yet-unreleased firmware that can perform over 37 million floating-point operations per second in the Linpack benchmark... compared to about 7 megaflops without. Oh yeeaaah."
As soon as a Froyo rom leaks, people will rip it apart and mod it to hell to get it to run on all kinds of devices. I'm sure we'll see Paul make a 2.2 Desire ROM, for example and now that HTC has released the Kernel source code, it should be easier to port existing quality roms like Cyanogenmod to the device. They'll all require root access to flash as they're unofficial roms. HTC will probably eventually port Froyo themselves, but that will probably take months.
Still, 2.2 hasn't shown up yet, so no dice. We'll have to wait until google I/O before that happens
it's going to be loooong till HTC themselves release it..but as soon as its out for nexus we'll see it here on xda in no time!
If you don't want to root & use a cooked ROM I wouldn't count on having it earlier than 6 months from now.
HTC needs to change Sense UI for Android 2.2 and looking at the Hero, which STILL does not have 2.1 I wouldn't expect it to be quick.

Months?? Seeing how things are going with the hero, I'd say they'll release it to the desire once the 2.3 is out. So better think of it as next year.
IMO Desire's owners are very important for HTC, since we are buying their flagship phones. I think they must keep us satisfied, if not, we will buy different phone next time. And I won't be happy if Nexus One owners will get 2.2 and we will not.
BTW isnt the evo 4g an Android 2.2 phone quz 2.1 didn't support 4g correct me if im wrong but if it is the update for the desire wont cost them so much time to port.

EVO 4G and Android 2.2 "Froyo"

Only a few days are left till EVO 4G will be on market. It will have Android 2.1.
I was wondering if it will get an upgrade to 2.2 "Froyo", since Google offisially released it! Or even Android 3.0 "Gingerbread" when will be out, in the end of 2010?

There have been posts about this. Nobody knows for sure. HTC did say that most of the phones released this year will get 2.2 by the end of the year. They might skip it for Gingerbread (2.5, btw) but nobody knows yet. No worries though. I'm sure when we root this thing we will get AOSP 2.2 installed in no time.
I'm just as excited as you are.

Not to be a spoilsport here, but I still prefer HTC HD2 cause it has physical buttons. Those touch sensitive ones have proven to be a bit awkward on the Nexus One already. But this phone's good.
Yeah according to Google/HTC (I'm not sure), but there's an article that says that almost all phones release in 2010 will get the 2.2 update. Not sure about the 3.0 one though, I think it's too early
And I'm just as excited about the Evo as all of you are.
Well semi good news. Froyo is on the Nexus One officially now. So once we root this puppy we can make a N1 rom for our Evo and bam! Instant parfait goodness. That said, I don't think we will root it before Google deposits the 2.2 code in the AOSP repositories so if that happens we can just cook up our own AOSP rom. Even so, this is a good backup plan.

I think that you are being way too confident. The 4G radio in this handset is going to present some interesting (and serious) challenges as far as just adapting AOSP or other ROMs (such as those for the GSM Nexus One) is concerned.

Definitely not a stranger to this notion. Before I got my evo I had a hero which had the same issues. I'm just hoping wecan find a way to better work around it.
Would this help?
Froyo is already said to have wimax support natively. As for cdma support as of 1.6 its supported natively. I don't see any reason we wont have radio support in Froyo. Its all there already. Or will be once its released. I have no worries about a upgrade to froyo. All we need is root and the rest is history

So basically HTC has patched in support for a new type of radio in a previous version of the firmware that doesn't support it natively, and you're using this as evidence that the situation will be different than it was with the Hero?
If you'll recall, 1.5 lacked the native CDMA support that arrived in 1.6. HTC patched it in and then abandoned the handset for seven months.
History is not on your side.

I'm completely new to posting in these forums (1st post), but have followed for quite a while.
In response to the above, I want to point out that keishou posted a link to the EVO 4G Developer's Guide which clearly states that the Froyo SDK will contain WiMAX support. Under section 2. 4G-WiMax Network, it says...
// you are on Sprint's 4G network
// ConnectivityManager.Type_WIMAX=6 will be included in Froyo SDK
// Until Type_WIMAX is supported
// you will need to hard-code the value 6
Doesn't this mean that we won't have to worry about WiMAX when flashing Froyo onto the EVO?

They didn't "abandon" the headset. There was a software release in between launch and 2.1. Not to mention that 2.1 was only out for 5 months before the Hero got the update. 1 bug fixing update and 1 major release in 7 months? Seems about average for the industry.
Look at the Treo 800w and Treo Pro. They never got an update, and probably never will. That's being abanonded.

it doesnt matter if HTC is gonna give us a update really man. we can do a much better job then them. as for HTC abandoning the hero i dont think that was the case. if a handset manufacturer updated the OS on every phone every time Google did they would be ****ing their selves. i think HTC did a ok job of releasing 2.1 for the hero. i mean really we couldve got 1.6, 2.0 or 2.0.1 but all those platforms were short lived. the fact is they have to build binaries to support major platform shifts and it just so happens that 1.5/the hero got caught in that groove. plus on top of it the hero is old news. it has a old ARCH that doesnt support most of the 2.+ APIs. hero doesnt support opengl 2.0 and never will. in a since 2.1 on the hero was kinda pointless. the only way we can get some of the 2.1 goodies is through hacking to get it, leaving the builds unstable and slightly buggy. of course us the tweakers dont care but the users who just buy the phone and wait for official updates do care about that. i mean also official 2.1 hasnt been out all that long either and the hero got it. will the evo see an update? im sure it will. there is no reason it shouldnt.
All of us that will be migrating from the Hero to the Evo have faith in you and the rest of the devs here Toast. You all worked wonders with the Hero and with more capable hardware I am sure you will blow us all away in due time.

Totally agree with ya on that, but dammit they better bring Darch with them
Seeing as the EVO is one of HTC's flagship devices I can't see it not getting at least two upgrades. For what its worth, based on the fact that the droid is getting 2.2 soon it appears that either google has started to talk to manufacturers better or this upgrade may simply be easier to roll out (of course the droid is vanilla 2.2, but considering how long 2.1 took it's still good news)
Based on the Evo's specs I can't imagine not getting updates until at least (Mind you I'm picking a random number with no basis) Android 4.0 or something. While HTC is slow with updates, that's what XDA is for
Yeah the only froyo you will get is a port from a dev on here. I heard the EVO will not get the official 2.2 for up to three months. Knowing sprint, much longer than that.
2.2 is coming to EVO

Froyo Released for Nexus One!! Desire Next?

As per Engadgets Website - Nexus one users have recieved an over the air Froyo Update.
Android 2.2 Froyo FRF85 now available for any Nexus One build? (update)
By Ross Miller posted Jun 28th 2010 at 9:51PM
We've been receiving numerous tips over the last hour that Nexus One owners on AT&T bands are receiving an over-the-air update for Android 2.2 FRF85, otherwise known as the "bulletproofed" Froyo build. No confirmation at this point, and since you're asking, no word yet either on an update for the larger T-Mobile N1 install base (though we've had at least one report of a user on FRF50 getting the OTA today). We've pinged Google for answers, will let ya know what we hear.
Update: Thanks to a few readers, we've now got a direct link from Google's servers to update from EPE54B to FRF85.
Update 2: Tipster Christian R has sent us a picture of his T-Mobile-banded Nexus One with FRF85, apparently updated from Android 2.1 build ERE27. Has the T-Mobile rollout begun? Not for us, at least.
Update 3: And now we've got a direct link to download a FRF85 build that'll supposedly work for any Android build. We can safely say that it worked for us on a T-Mobile device with 2.1 / ERE27. Download from Google here, and if you need direction on how to do the update yourself, take a cue from our commenters. [Thanks, MRCUR and afinite]

Would there still be the need to Root and Flash the device once FroYo is released officially by HTC on the desire?

I have a feeling that the Desire and Evo will get an upgrade at about the same time, but if one was going to come first I'd expect it on the Desire as apart from updating Sense for 2.2, there is far less work involved on the Desire due to its similarity to the Nexus.

Is The Evo 4G Gonna Get Left In The Dark?

I don't know about you guys but I'm starting to think we are gonna get treated like the HD2 was......I mean HTC and Windows gave there dedicated users a great device with the ancient Windows 6.5.....and while we may be running Android 2.2 (which is beginning to become old news) we are running an ancient UI (HTC Sense 1.0) while the new phones are getting Sense 2.0+.....sounds familiar to me with the new Windows 7 devices coming out and the HD2 stuck on 6.5......I really think froyo will be the last major update for the Evo....at least until Q3 or Q4 of this year......What do u guys think???? Id be happier with either Gingerbread or the New Sense or a combination of both......
Its still Sprint's flagship smartphone. The epic doesn't get any love, and I really don't see the shift overtaking it. Does it even have a named replacement yet?
We'll at least get new sense, if not gb soon. Didn't we just see a sense gb rom dump...I lost the thread, but HTC is at least working on something

I think that the evo will get 2.3. more apps would sell if the evo got 2.4 also...i would not be surprised to see sprint request 2.4 from htc but ill settle for sprint requesting 2.3.
contact sprint if you want to push for an update to 2.3
I dont remember, maybe one of you folks know.
What was the time delta between Google's release of Froyo bits and Sprint/HTC's release of the 2.2 OTA upgrade for EVO?

Sprint is not releasing new phones as quickly as compared to other carriers so I think the EVO will be a flagship phone longer than most other phones.

I don't see how that is possible when from my knowledge that phone is a GSM phone that supports HSPA+, not WiMax, not CMDA.
Don't see this phone coming to sprint.

You're correct, it is a GSM device.
optimus came out as a gsm phone to, and not after long it was on all 4 carriers
Well I really hope it doesn't come to Sprint. Knowing them, they'll get it and think that they don't need another flagship phone and we'll never get our EVO 2. Besides, we sure as hell don't need another gimmick phone since the Echo will be the reigning king in that department.
evo2 would be nice, but in all fairnest optimus 3d is pretty good phone. hdmi, dlni, 3d, dual core prosessor, 4.3 inch screen etd. has pretty impressive packege, and would be good addition to sprints line up. about echo I really dont know what they was thinkin. phone looks like its ben desined on a launch break. lame
Well Sprint can ask for HTC to upgrade us to a 2.0 Sense but I doubt that will happen as HTC is more focused on their new lines coming out which is fail on their part.
Sprint needs to learn how to push harder for updates out of HTC and remove the bullcrap from their shipped ROMs like their bloatware.
LG & Sprint have not really faired well together imo. Lutus & Lotus elite = garbage, Optimus besides having Android 2.2 is really no better than the sanyo Zio. The best phone they've had for Sprint was the Rumor 2.
I work at a Sprint store & I see the LGs come back all the time broken & not working right. Keep the 3D on GSM & give me an EVO2 as well.
If you check out the htc community website, there was a response from htc about the update to 2.3.
Linky
Basically we have to wait and see if htc will allow 2.3 to be on the EVO in not at all by passing "quality standards".
This is frustrating...

Maybe what is taking so long is that they are doing GB and HTC Sense 2.0 for the Evo.
^Joke of the year ladies and gentlemen.
