Is this possible? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to force the software keyboard to stay open with the hardware keyboard open?
Sent from my non-rooted, stock Epic.

I'm sure it is possible, but I bet someone will need source to make the modification, which means they have to do it on 2.1 or wait until an official 2.2 to come out.

I'm sure its possible but for the life of me I cannot find any use for it.

Idk I just think it would be cool. Just a question.

I believe anything is possible, but why would you want too? The reason for a hardware keyboard is that your screen gets to stay fully useable.. PLus playing games it is nice to have a hardware keyboard.

What would you use that for?

Yo dawg! I heard you like to type, so I put a keyboard above your keyboard so you can type while you type!

I actually know someone who can use the screen better with the screen out. Should it matter why i want it? Not really.

So, is anyone going to try and attempt this?

Hold menu to open keyboard

I've seen videos where people could hold the Menu soft button, and the software keyboard would appear on the screen. Why can't we do this? I think the phone they were using was a Nexus One, but I'm not sure.

Just slide out the physical. Lol.
No really though, I don't see th need because with the on screen keyboard, what are you going to do with it unless your already in a text feild, where in it already would have popped up. You see what I'm saying? It should already be up if your in a text box. If your not, what are you going to do with it?
The hard keyboard though I use all the time for copy and paste short cuts.

My keyboards all work fine, i was just curious about this. Seems that if there is a feature of android, you would think it'd be on every phone.

But my question is what funtion does this serve? Why randomly bring up the soft keyboard? Does it do something I don't know about besides typing?

The same reason most people theme their phones, cause I can. Lol kidding aside, I just want to do this. I'm going to try and find the video I saw before to see why they did it.

Neither do I have that feature.
Where is it? I cNt find it.

It's the version thats in the market.
No I mean where is the setting located? I accidentally hit enter, and it sends.
I'm running the latest version, but it won't show any way to disable that feature.
Sent from my DINC2HD
Ah my bad. There isn't a setting for it. It just doesn't do it for me. lol
Dangit... You serious? You can accidentally hit enter and it doesn't send before you want it to??

Yep. I'm also not using a stock keyboard either. I'm switching between Thumbkeyboard 4, Swype, and some other keyboard mods. So maybe that might be the reason, maybe not. I know on swype there is no enter key. There is the emoticon list as a replacement lol

Ah. I can't seem to give up the stock HTC keyboard. It's so clean and well put together. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to watch my typing better lol

Can a developer take the vibration code out of the samsung keyboard?

Can a developer take the vibration code out of the samsung keyboard?
I really like the Samsung Keyboard that comes with the phone accept for the fact that the vibration can't keep up with me and it screws me up. Is there any way to disable the vibration from the keyboard?
Thanks
Go into the sound settings and turn off haptic feedback. Kills vibration for everything though.

Yeah but I still want the vibration to work, just not for that keyboard. I think it's stupid there isn't an option in the settings for the keyboard.
Install a different kb mod for the time being until a dev does it or it happens at some point. That right now would be your best bet and honestly there are great free kb apps out there that are far better then the normal stock one.
Our you can just put on thick knit gloves whenever you want to use the keyboard

In all seriousness, the stock android keyboard is better than the samsung variety. I prefer swype, but just try "keyboard" in the market and you will get a lot of options, use one with great ratings anda lot of downloads. Swiftkey was great. You have many choices... I bet "Go" or "keyboard from android 2.3"are exactly what you're looking for.

I've been using the keyboard from 2.3 and I like it but the auto corrdnt sucks. I had 2 HTC phones before this one and loved the keyboard and auto correct. I've tried go, swype and swiftkey. Swiftkey is alright but their auto correct sucks. Is there a way to get the evo 4g's keyboard?

Better Keyboard is hands down the best I have ever used. Amazon app store

Space button = silent?

As I look at my keyboard, I see that my hard keyboard has a silent icon on the spacebar in the top corner. Does this mean that it is a silent icon? If so, how do I use it?
Same here, I'm super curious I've tried everything I could think of, Maybe if I figure it out ill tell you but I know someone is gonna beat me to it:/

Unlock your phone, slide out the keyboard out and hold the space bar. It would put your phone in silent/vibrate and press/hold the space bar again to return back to the volume level. This somehow doesn't work if the phone is locked or in the music player.

I tried that, and all it did was open a search page that started filling with spaces...I am using LPP as a launcher if it matters.

[Q] Keyboard on landscape mode

hey everyone,
i've noticed that in some (most actually) apps, when in landscape mode and bringing up the keyboard (it happens on all keyboards ive tried: swiftkey, swiftkeyflow, kii, keymonk and samsung stock) instead of bringing up the keyboard and displaying the app you're in in whats left of the screen, the keyboard comes up with a white text input display, allowing you to see only the text you enter, without its context in the application you're in.
this can be troublesome in apps that combing typing and drawing, such as lecturenotes or any other natural handwriting note taking app you know.
has anyone found a way to overcome this issue?
try swype, my man
http://beta.swype.com/
I've tried all my writing apps and none of them do that. What app are you using? I have tried it with both the stock keyboard and the Hackers Keyboard.

getting the same effect with:
Samsung stock
swiftkey
swiftkey flow
kii
Keymonk
+ some two other keyboards I can't remember by name right now

I'm actually curious to know.if there is a way to avoid the white box appearing. It's the only reason why I prefer typing in portrait mode, I'd like to see where I'm typing.

Same here man,
why Samsung would force something like this on users is beyond me.
It renders many great apps unusable in landscape mode

Is anyone still thinking about this? I also find this quite annoying, also because it is different from app to app and also from Rom to Rom. I get the right results on most tw roms, but not on AOSP or CM10.1, where it differs from app to app. Changing dpi doesn't solve the issue.
I read that thumb keyboard has an option to suppress fullscreen windows, but I use swype.
I use the Note I, but this is not device-specific. No work-around?
Subscribed. Always wanted to know whether or not it can be fixed.

Actually on most aosp roms there's an option to disable full screen keyboard on landscape. However, I have never heard of this option on touchwiz roms, people keep suggesting keyboards but non of them work. I believe this requires modification in the root directory.
