As far as I know, carriers lock MMS to the network (3G/4G/1x) so as to require an authenticated handset. That way, they can track usage, bill customers, and keep fraudulent or spam messages off the network. Allowing it over WIFI or any other network would remove those abilities.
There are alternatives to MMS over WIFI though. Carriers usually maintain web sites that you can login to view messages, and it's just as easy to email to a phone than anything.

Any One know how to use sms service ???
I'm biting my tongue and resisting the temptation to use humourous yet insulting comments as it's obvious you mean something slightly more complicated than sending a text message (at least I hope it is for your sake ).
So, before my tongue starts bleeding, could you explain a little more what it is you need help with?

I am wondering too, how to use the SMS service. I am using Kin0kin 1.30b Full now, and there is SMS Service setting in connections setting. The options are GPRS, GSM, GSM Preferred, GPRS Preferred. As far as I know, I can send SMS via GPRS if I have account in SMS provider such as SMSbug, SMS777 etc (although I can't make it work, even using IPSMS posted in hacking and development forum). My own questions is
Is it possible to use SMS via GPRS without having smsbug account or others? if yes, how to set it? If not, why the ROM has such kind of setting option?
Hi all,
Been loving the Desire so far but this evening I got an mms from a friend, presumably showing me his own new Desire, and while the messaging app shows an unread message waiting it doesn't seem to want to download it.
The picture messaging settings seem accurate in the network settings so I'm at a loss as to what's up. This is all via T-Mobile, as per the subject, and everything configured itself when I put the sim in.
Any ideas?
I'm on t-mobile and receive and send mms mostly okay but there have been occasions where my mms wouldn't send at all. tried a different picture and it worked. I've had problems with mms and t-mobile on my iPhone before I got my Desire so I think it's a problem with t-mobile not the Desire?

You need to enable mms for you account, they are not included in the contract and thus you need to activate them online or by contacting them if it doesn't activate when you receive or send an mms.
All good suggestions, thanks.
I checked my account online and it's set to allow picture messages. I also just sent a picture to a friend, which arrived fine. I did notice that it disconnected from the net both before and after sending, so I'm thinking it's using different settings to send them.
Under Settings/Wireless & Networks/Mobile Networks/Access Point Names it does actually show two connections. One called T-Mobile Internet and one called Picture Message.
They're both very similar, except the T-Mobile Internet has no username/password set and no MMS server details. Also the APN type is set to "default" and "mms" respectively. Wondering if I should try combining the two...
Fake Edit: I just asked the same friend to send me a message back and this time it worked. Guess I just need to keep trying every once in a while to see if it happens again.
T-Mobile accounts generally are enabled for MMS to begin with, but to finalise the settings and actually activate it, you have to SEND an MMS. This activates the service.
Once you have done that, you can then normally receive.
if you hadn't sent an MMS before this, that is probably why.
Yeah that could be it, too; although I'm sure I'd sent MMS messages on my Touch HD before (same SIM). Ah well, it seems to be working for now at least! Thanks again all.
If you're using Handcent for sms / mms, that might also cause your issues...
I have been the proud owner of a Galaxy Nexus for a few months now. I am using T-mobile with no data plan since I have wi-fi access almost everywhere. The only problem I have is MMS. Because I leave my data off to avoid unwanted charges, I cannot receive the occasional picture that people try to send me. I have talked to T-Mobile several times, and no one wants to help me because I have a device that was not purchased on contract. I have heard of apps like Droidwall, but I would rather not root.
Yesterday, I was experimenting with my APN settings and changed APN type to only MMS. This may be the solution I have been looking for. I was able to receive MMS when I enabled data, but Chrome would not even try to load a page because it could not find a connection. The Data Usage page in Settings showed the only apps using data as Messaging and Android OS. As far as I know, messaging is not going to run up charges since I have unlimited messaging. It is the OS process that concerns me. So far, I have not gotten any charges for data, but I haven't left the connection open for more than a few minutes. Has anyone tried this, and if so, was it a good solution to the classic "no data plan" problem?
Just make a separate APN called "mms" with your MMS information in it, and under "APN Type" you make it "MMS".
I'm having some issues with mms messages on my phone. I have searched on google and the forums. I haven't found anything to help me yet. My mms messaging was working fine I sent and received several messages the day before. I installed gosms pro and used it for a day and a few people sent me some mms messages. The messages werent downloading. I would keep clicking on the download button but a few minutes later it would say it failed and show the download button again. I uninstalled gosms and I still cannot download mms messages even in the stock messages app. At first I thought it was the network, but i put my sim card in my old iphone and it was receiving picture messages without issue. I have tried everything i could think of short of reflashing because I don't want to have to spend hours setting up all of my apps and settings again. I don't know if I am missing something. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone seen this before? Thanks in advance for any help.
My carrier forces me to send and receive mms over 3G. I am unable to send or receive using Wifi. Do you have 3G truned on and network coverage? If not try that. Also check the Access Point Names (apn) are the same on both phones.
Check in the apps settings as there are sometimes filter settings (max size etc.) that can be changed. From personal experience AtAT limits the size and theres no way around it.

I have signal. I can make calls just fine and browse the internet without problem. It is only when sending mms messages. That is why I am confused. I set the apn settings back to default then checked those entries against what others were saying here and they are all correct. I even went and cleared the app data of the messaging app to reset all of its settings.
New development. Now I can't send sms messages. I just tried this morning to send a few text messages and it just keeps saying that the message failed to send. I have no idea if im not receiving incoming messages now, but I haven't gotten any since yesterday afternoon. What could possibly cause all incoming and outgoing messages to stop working? i don't get it.

With Hangouts supposedly ending their SMS/MMS capabilities, does anyone have a good alternative that works over wifi? There are times when I'm in an area of no network coverage, but do have access to WiFi.
I understand that Facebook has a good one, but I
don't use FB, so that's not an option. Also, it doesn't matter if the app is paid or not.
In advance, thanks.
