so i have stuck with viper rom and im on frozen and the battery life i terrible. i get to 50% in less than 3 hours with little use like pandora on for 10 minutes and checking texts and a call or 2. what is the best rom i can get in your guys opinions right now?
my favorite rom is bonsai. its veryt fast, stable and good with battery. its up to you though. flash one and see if you like it. if not floash another one. ifyou decide to go with bonsai though dont wipe anything. the installation of the rom backs up your data and then restores it for you after the flash.
I've been on viper before and to my experience, It's never been that bad. You should check out how many apps you installed and which of them are running in the background. Also see if you're background data is turned on and if you have push email. There are many culprits to battery drain, and in my experience (i'm a flash junkie) i have yet to come across a ROM with horrible battery drain. Usually it's the user-end that causes it.
im on midnight 3.2 standard and its great so far ive been running midnight since 2.9 and its been great none of them seem to have a bad battery drain that does sound like something else and not the rom though.
Thanks for the insight! Awesome

I've been on Viperrom Trinity 3.0.3, Apocalypse 4.0.2c and Frozen. Didn't really have the issues you described. Though, it was a bit flaky at times with battery, gps, or whatever. I have been running with Bonsai v. 2.0.1 for a week I guess and haven't had any issues whatsoever.
I would suggest TrulyEpic. Works great

Hey everyone,
I'm under 10 posts, so I have to post here. With that said, I have a question.
I'm running nil's Business Gingersense 3.0 v2.3. When my 3G is on, my battery life seems to be sucked down about 2-3% every minute or so. Now, when I installed this ROM I did a full wipe of data/cache, dalvik, battery stats, return to stock. I also followed his instructions in his thread on his ROM about battery saving. In addition, I did my normal turning off syncing, setting apps to update only when opened, turning off all vibration features, etc. My battery still drops that 2-3% every minute.
I'm curious if anyone else is having/had this problem? If so, did you fix it?
I'm going to try Tiny's newest release kernel tonight, but wanted to see if anyone else had the same thing(s) going on with their DInc that I have.
Thanks in advance for you help!
Curious if you've noticed this after a full charge and after the battery percentage drops below ~94%?
I'm in the same boat with less than 10 posts so I also need to ask here. I am noticing that the HTC weather app seems to indicate a very different location than the one I am in. I also notice it with the weather bug app, so it seems to be a location issue and not an app issue. Sometimes if I go into settings/location and uncheck/recheck use wireless networks it corrects itself and sometimes it needs a reboot. Any ideas why or how to fix it? Thanks.

Hey Bull_Moose,
I refrained from posting a response until after I gave Tiny's kernel a couple of days of use. I haven't noticed the drop as much with the new kernel as well as switching out the Yahoo mail app for K9 Mail. It still seems to be dropping a little quicker than I'd like, but perhaps that's because I am actually seeing percentage numbers now and thus it's creating a simulated quick drop effect.
I'll give it some more testing, but it seems better now after those two fixes. Like I said, not as good as it seemed with Froyo custom ROMs or even the Gingerbread OTA leak, but perhaps that because of all the little tweaks I can do with the ROM.

I was the same way when I first used a ROM that showed % drops so part of it may just be the fact that you're keeping a closer eye on the battery life now. Once fully charged, these batteries will drain a couple of % even if it is still plugged in. That's why after five minutes of being unplugged your phone could have dropped 5% or more, it's simply "catching up" to the actual battery level.
But if you're noticing a quick drain after that initial drop then it's probably an app doing too much in the background. It is possible that the ROM/kernel/ROM and kernel combo is causing it, but I've never had this problem with any of Nils' ROMs even with the kernel he uses. (Tiny's is better though, in my opinion)
I have been using this ROM for about a week or two now and I am having an issue with the Friends widget. It will only set the default number on one person all the others go into my vcard and says set a default but it never stays set. Any suggestions???
Also can anyone tell me how to get the verizon backup assistant back. I know that I can use google for whatever reason I just prefer verizon. I have read a few forums but can't seem to find a solid answer. Also I am very new to this stuff so the more instruction from start to finish the better. Thanks in advance!!!
Is it possible at all with Nils Gingersense 3.0 or 3.5 to ever use fastboot, or is it completely out of the question (With the file being so large and all...)?
lol

Hey guys, I constantly have random hot reboots. No pattern or anything, it just happens. I have asked a few guys in Calkulin's forum... everyone offered help... but no one actually helped me fix the issue.
Basically, I am on Calk's 2.0. Only other thing I flashed was Overstew's ICS theme (I used themeporter). No, my issue isn't the theme. I have had these issues since Calk's 1.5. Theme or no theme.
Here's my routine of setting roms up:
Manually wipe everything -sd card.
Use Calk's Format All.
Flash Calk's 2.0 and Overstew's theme.
Reboot.
Install Titanium, but only restore apps (41 apps), no data.
Set LauncherPro as my default launcher.
Setup my settings.
Just using Calk's stock battery saver script. No overclocking or undervolting.
I have tried wiping and new downloads several times. I wiped my external sd card. I even removed it, for a while.
Any ideas? I had a logcat during the hot reboot too. It had some errors around GPS right before it rebooted.
Thanks
P.S. I also had the same issue on my old Evo 3d. I just thought it was my hardware...
Undervolting is what Calk himself recommends to fix hot reboots. It's in the OP on his ROM threads. Also different kernels. Tried any of that?

Actually, he recommends restoring the Stock Voltages to remove the default undervolting.
"Having random reboots or freezes?
Try flashing the Calkulin's_Undervolt_Stock_mV_Settings_for_E4GT zip attached or flash a different kernel
first thing that comes to mind is the viper los script
I don't have the Viper LOS. I have tried different kernels. Plus, isn't 2.0 using Rogue's stock anyway?
I'm not undervolted. 2.0 can't be undervolted without using tegrak :/ all great suggestions... it's driving me insane that I can't figure this out.

I am on Calks 1.5 rom and do not have any reboot issues. The first thing I do when I flash any new Rom is put back the stock pulled kernel and I believe this is the most stable of them all and I also have never seen an LOS on it.
Do you have any battery saving apps or task manager apps running? I know these have caused issues like this as well...
No. Nothing! I had stock pulled kernel before. Maybe I will try it again. But isn't it the same as Rogue stock + boot animation and init.d?

I used to have random reboots with different lockscreens from the AIO mod. Had no lockscreen and had no reboots.
Definately recommend stock kernel and restoring stock volt settings. As for Los, ek02 fixes it
If I was helpful, give thanks

Hey I remember chatting with you in the Calk rom thread. "OP"
As a update to my situation. I was also having random hot reboots on EVERY rom I was on UNTILL my latest combination of Kernal / Rom.
My current setup is Kernal: EK02 and my rom is Calk v2.0 which is built on the EK02 stock build.
I have yet to have any hot reboots. My current Up Time is 38:58 which means I have not did a battery pull or reboot in 38 hours.
I also use Titanium Backup to restore about 30 apps + data on my end, and MyBackup Pro to restore bookmarks / texts
For the first time it looks like my hot reboots are currently fixed. I dont use any undervoltages and no SetCPU no custom launcher and no custom lockscreen. Everything Stock and all 7 home screens nearly filled with icons and picture frames ect...
I was using Rogue's kernel and was going to switch to stock today, as that was the only thing I didn't do... but I was in the middle of calibrating my battery this morning and I was getting great battery life. Well, 15 hours later, not one hot reboot, light usage (lots of texts through google voice and xda, and a little browsing) with a screen on time of 1:45 and I'm at 54%. Has my issue been fixed? I have no idea. Am I happy at the moment? F*ck yeah.

After jumping to the EK02 Rom and Kernal Im also a happy camper now.
No reboots / No los / No lag / No dieing battery.
Now if only Sprint could fix there slow 3G that be great.
On the topic of battery, I never calibrated or did anything special but I noticed my phone can last 12hours + without charge if I turn off 3G when Im not using it. For example I work in a warehouse where I get good signal for calls and texts but 3G is mad slow, so I turn 3G off but am still able to recieve texts and calls and my battery life doubles in that period of time. Soon as I turn 3G back on, battery starts to die faster.
I just rooted my phone and installed CM10a couple days ago. I love jelly bean and having my phone debloated.
My question is.... are there any roms or settings on the roms that can help me get get better battery life? The battery life on my gs3 is good but not great... I selected the powersave feature on the CPU governor, turned down my brightness, turned off gps and bluetooth. I have been thinking about installing juice defender but I have had it previously and got tired of turning it off when I streamed pandora.
I am a pretty heavy user... about 1-3 hours of screen time per charge. I have seen some pretty rediculous stats out there and would like to be able to achieve a full 24 hours. :fingers-crossed:
I had my gs2 rooted and it seemed to get better battery life than the gs3 (rooted vs rooted). There was no comparison when it came to stock vs. stock.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Could you please elaborate how I should go about switching to that setup from kernal version 3.0.42 and the nightly CM10?
I have also had problems figuring out how to properly backup with nandroid or titanium. I can never get the backups to load
I am ready to try pretty much anything to try and get some premium battery life and performance.
I really appreciate your help and input. THANKS! :good:
Basically ya download the up to date versions of the aokp ROM and the KT kernel for aosp jb. Then ya open to recovery and first go to backup/restore and make your nandroid. You can decide whether or not you want it on internal SD or external. Once that's done ya wipe your system & caches like ya did for cm10. Then flash the ROM. After the ROM then flash gapps & fix permissions and reboot. Let the ROM settle and then boot to recovery, clear cache again and flash kernel then reboot. My instructions are a broad guideline though. I'd make sure to fully read both the aokp & kernel OP'S to get a warm and fuzzy on what your doing

seems like you are new at this so let me add a new thing, the S3 has amazing battery currently 9 hours up time and 1.5h screen on time and still 50% left and that is very light usage. Usually I listen to music play games watch movies and after 12 hours i still have about 10% left.
For starters cycle the battery a few time. Charge 100% and let it die 0% not charging in between, take out the battery and put it back in. Let it charge to 100% and and do this a another 2 times during a week. This will will use all the cells in the battery and should give you a boost. I have herd following above but charging while off may help, but cant confirm.
The next thing to do is remove bloatware or app you will never use, some of these apps will just load up in memory and use up your battery. Most apps can be disabled in Settings > Application Manager > All. Things like Allshare Play can be disabled, some apps like video hub may have gotten an update that needs to be removed before it can be disabled, this is the same as freezing in Titanium Backup. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DISABLE BECAUSE THERE MAYBE NEGATIVE EFFECTS.
This is what I have done and my battery has been amazing and never use power saving mode, actually i took it a step further and downloaded system tuner and disabled non essential apps like Vplayer from even booting at start-up.
Flashing different kernals and ROM can greatly improve battery life but you loose OTA and forced to wipe which i got tried of doing so i stick with stock. Waiting for CM10 to go stable then i will switch. The S3 stock is still snappy and never lags and for me battery life is very good.
thank you both very much. I just installed the AOKP rom and I will try the power cycles next time my battery dies. One question on the AOKP... I cannot figure out how to change or add lockscreen icons. and yes I have looked at the lockscreen option on ROM control. I can post screenshots if you dont believe me lol

We believe you because those lock screen options haven't been implimented in the ROM yet. If its a must have for you I'm pretty sure ktoonzes aosp jellybean kernel will work with CM10.

One other question. My network constantly switches from 4g to HSPA to 3g. When my phone was stock it would stay on 4g (lte) 99.9 %.. is this normal? I would prefer it to stay on 4g. I also think it might hurt battery life since its constantly switching even though lte is a battery hog.

What rom are you on? I'd love mine to switch to 3g the majority of the time, LTE is such a hog, there's no way that switching it down is going to use more battery than staying on LTE full-time.

Bump.
Nobody has this issue?
K....I apologize if I missed it, but didn't see a stock jb thread....aside from the one from months ago that has a billion posts. I think a new one is not unreasonable.
Anyway... just curious about what others think.
After debloating it heavily....all T-Mobile and Samsung junk gone and a lot more....and stopping apps from auto starting with autostarts...I'm pretty happy!
GPS took about a minute to lock first time ...but now its quick. And accurate.
It is super smooth after a day of settling.
Going on 14 hours on battery with light to moderate use and at 59 percent left. Seems on par with most stuff I've ran.
I do miss some of the customization ...which will lead me to start flashing soon I'm sure. LOL
But overall....I'm impressed.
Anyone wanna share, ask questions or debate?

I had it working once on my T989D, it was heavily bloated, still seemed faster than usual leaked builds. Doesn't really matter now though because I can't flash anything based off this official tmob update because every ROM I've tried with it either bootloops or FC`s constantly. A real shame, I looked forward to this for so long, I assume it doesn't work because I have the koodo t989. Waiting on the Telus version to be released.

I have a T989D also and I've been able to get it to run perfectly fine for over 24 hours.
I have version 1 of Infamous S2 and I had to flash it, wipe cache and dalvik, reboot let settle for ten mins then flash the newest radio or it would keep dropping my koodo radio.
I think the key is wiping cache and dalvik after you flash it, I did also do a full internal wipe and installed from an sd card though.
I didn't see a huge increase in speed. Although it does feel a little smoother.
The increase in battery life has been huge for me though. On ICS I had a terrible average of about 6-8 hours depending on light to moderate use. On Jelly Bean I'm averaging 10-11 hours on more than moderate use.
Do you have a list of what you removed?
I also can't flash any recoveries except the old cwm so that's probably part of my problem.

That's pretty decent battery life and what I used to get when on the stock 4.0.4, but my battery life with this one has been worse. It drops below 50% after 4 hours off the charger with the same amount of use as before. I noticed in a developer thread a screenshot of someone getting great battery life as well. Did you root and debloat?
It seems like the OP was able to do that with some success. I really like the performance otherwise, much better improvement over 4.0.4. OP, are you rooted? Also, I searched the Play Store for autostarts and saw a few different options...would you mind sharing which developer's autostarts app you're using? I saw one that's paid and a couple that were free. Thanks!
EDIT: The other thing that's frustrating is when a new text comes through, it just says "New Message Arrived." I used to be able to change that in 4.0.4 to where the text would display in the notification area, but I can't find that on this version. Wondering if TouchWiz did away with it or it's because of my corporate password policy.

The 10-11 hours is even more amazing to me because I've been using my phone way more than usual (Simpsons Tapped Out is addicting)
I did do a full recharge/drain a couple times after upgrading, so maybe that may help you.
These are my steps in case you want to give it a try.
(On a full charge 100%)
I used odin to flash back to ICS stock unrooted
I then used kies to upgrade to JB
After the upgrade, I went into recovery and did a wipe/factory reset for good measure.
Unplugged phone and started setup (Disabled some tmobile bloat)
Used the phone until it ran out of charge.
Charged the phone completely .
Unplugged and drained it completely again.
K....not gonna quote a bunch of stuff....but in response to a few things.
This was my experience, but trying to use the tlle4 Telus radio left me frozen at bootup mostly....I got in a couple times, but it wouldn't let me save my apn settings and I had no signal. Flashed the new jb radio and manually had to enter apn settings, which saved this time...and I was good. Tlle4 has better signal where I live, but the new one works OK.
What did I freeze? Well, mostly anything with T-Mobile or Samsung in its name. Now everything is working fine, so soon I will uninstall and delete them completely.
I use the app specifically called Autostarts. It is a paid app....but gold to me. I stop any app I am familiar with and don't want starting by itself at startup or other events. Especially maps!! Otherwise it seems to run all the time. I disable it in autostarts anywhere I find it. Then it only runs when I start it.
Think I got most things that were directed to me covered.
I also use advanced task killer free. I do not ever autokill apps. I use it as an easy way to kill things after I run them that don't close properly by themselves. Like maps and Canada's the weather network app.
Last night when I plugged in my charger I was at 24 hours and 3 hours screen time with 22 percent remaining. So stock seems no better or worse than most other jb roms I've used.

The Skyrocket port of JB for this phone can do all of that.

I'm using the Embryo rom now. I did try installing the new stock JB rom but it just can't compared to some of the custom roms. I haven't try the roms by ptmr3, Rushing, and Jamison. I'll probably wait for a few more updates before trying the tmobile JB roms. I missing using Wifi-calling sometimes but the Embryo is just a very good rom.
I am using CM11 and really love the ROM thus far, but since I installed it, I am noticing a HUGE decrease in battery life... I unplugged my phone at 6:45am today, for example, and it is now 9:12am and I've only used it to send 3 text messages and it received one phone call that was under 2 mins. I am down to 71%... this has never drained so fast until on CM11. Question is... can I use a different kernel and would that make any difference? Not sure why this is happening, but on SlimKat it seemed much better battery life, but the ROM was unstable for me with a few random lock ups and camera fails and such. Would even be willing to go back to a 4.2 ROM if needed.

My starting point would be to wipe cache and dalvik and boot leaving the device untouched to allow the caches to build for about 10 min then reboot. I'd give it another try if that was your initial process. All else being equal it's a valid place to start.
