Using Storage (Device or Card) as RAM or (VRAM) - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Okay guys & gals, is this possible? Yes, I know, I know, it would be really slow. But slow is better than none at all. A lot of people are at 70-80% right after boot! There has GOT to be a way around this.

I have 88.47MB/187.61MB free after boot.
I'm not loading a lot of things on boot, basically just ACR and WiMoSpeed.
If you don't have enough free memory, perhaps you could try using a different ROM?
Unfortunately I don't know any way to use other memory as RAM, would indeed be interesting

Not possible. Guys, do you have a clue how slow this would be? Not to mention the technical difficulties.
Try a more memory friendly ROM.

Like yours, right?

BUMP
Exactly, the ROM that you're using is of course the "best" or at least "better" because it's the one that YOU use. The ROM that you have is the one that you want to use, you use it because that's what YOU want to use, what YOU use is NOT right for everyone else. That's why there are so many flavors out there.
But that's off topic, this is NOT about changing ROMs, this thread is about finding a way to have more system resources available with the ROM you ALREADY have and love.

I didn't say that, you know ;] As always I recommend simplicity by seem_ZA.
If you're using a special rom that you do not want to change (stock for example, because of warranty) there are several tweaks to lower the ram usage. Disable resproxy, push internet, lower the cache... Plenty of options. If you don't know where to start I can provide you the corresponding registry entries or even a cab file for easiest possible install.

Alright Jackos, put em' on the glass baby. The Registry tweaks & the cabs that will do the tweaks for you. That's a start, I'm sure that would help a lot of users.

Question about lag

I have installed the RickyWyatt Kavana V20 ROM and I am wonderring if any one if experiencing problems with scrolling through the main screen or selecting thing's because every time I scroll I have to wait a second or two for the phone to scroll.
Hopefully there is a way to fix this problem because the ROM look's awesome but it is really slow for me.
Thank you in advance.

Have you checked the memory? I believe that Ricky referenced this when he put out Rom 20
Thank you in advance.

You will need to ask Ricky but I believe that the answer is you have to many panels and need to disable some of them.
Or... overclock your CPU a little bit. Look in the Tools folder for the OMAP clock program. I'd recommend about 204 for good battery life and a little increase in perfomance. Go 240 if you want more performance but shorter battery life
where about's is the Tool's folder I can't seem to find it on the phone?
On the Start menu ?!?
isnt it "accesories" in the start menu?
Well in my version of Rick's ROM it's in "My Tools".... either way... it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to find an installed application in the start menu.
not tryying to sound like a dumb ass but in Accessorie's it's not there either (I am usseing V20)

Never mind I found it sorry I was blind I guess.
Also I am wondering how to change the menu's around (if possible) it's not that I am to lazy to figure it out myself but I am worried I might mess around with something I shouldn't be messing around with. What I mean about changing the menu's is how to add and delete blade's from the main screen.
Thank you guy's for your time it is very much apprecciatted.
Also can I put a SDHC card in my phone? How about a 4 GB SD card or is 2GB the limit?
sorry I had to repost but I have one more question, is setting the frequency to 288 alright for my phone? Is there any chance it will mess it up?
It will lockup your phone and never recover. Stay below 250...
p.s. Rearanging "blades" and start menu folders may be a little over your head right now. Do a little more reading first....
And yes you can use SDHC cards in your phone...

I wouldnt push the envelope of oveclocking your phone past 240 or 252mhz
some people can get away with higher numbers it seems. others have issues with the phone locking up and then wont boot up...forcing a hard reset. so be cautious if you venture past 252mhz
Isnt that what I said two posts above ?!
THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP MAN!!! It is very much appreciatted. Before you gave me your reply I set it to 280 and it messed up but I was able to change it back (LUCKY) with out a hard boot. I am not questioning your answer but are you positive (I don't want to buy it and then realize it doesn't work) that I can use a SDHC card (4GB) because I emailed some one who was selling it on EBay and he said it doesn't work on my phone?
Thank you once again.

I am not so worried about running a 4GB card but more worried about it not working because it's a SDHC and not just a SD Card?

I am sick of all these ROMs

I guess what I mean to say I am sick of all these problems, with both stock and cooked roms, I just want a phone that works smoothly.
What I wouldn't give for ANY ROM that is reliable.
I have tried ROM after ROM, and I still have not found even one that is truly reliable. The stock ROMs, or ones close to stock are maybe better but not OK.
I am so sick of the slow HTC messenging client (I have tried the fix to disable it, but that doesn't work)
Even the regular windows messenging freezes.
In fact the phone seems to have a lot of fun freezing up all the time. It usually unfreezes after a while, but why would I want a phone that I have to wait 5 minutes for before I can do anything?
All I want is 1 reliable ROM. It doesn't have to be lightning fast, just something that doesn't waste my time.
It would also be nice to have something with a bit of cool graphics in it too, but that is not important.
I have read online about a lot of people having the same problems. Why can't we seem to fix this? I have a lot of faith in Xda-developers, so I know this can be done.
try cooking your own then maybe you'll see how hard it is to make a reliable rom. :|
Yeah, I don't mean to give any offense to the chefs, as I thank them for their effort, but I think the problem is deeper than that.
I just want to know what I can do? Or maybe how can I help to discover the root cause of these problems?
you know...i dont think its the ROMs...
honestly i think it's because the stuff that's on the phone (whether its a stock ROM or a cooked one)
it NEEDS more memory...
thats what i think at least...
well how can one build a ROM that is snappy and reliable?
Its not the RAM, its the Qualcrap MSM7200 processor. Same processor for 3 generations. Thats why.
Check my signature & words of Gandhi Ji, you will understand why we fail. Our greed always outgrows our technological developments & what we are left with in the end is nothing but frustration.
To be specific have shipped ROM & attain the nirvana.
Kind of same feelings here. I have been using modified ROMS and now I realized that some of my text messages don't go through to people. This is kind of bad because I already fired one person from our company because there was misunderstanding cause she never received the message but I didn't believe her cause I got confirmation from the operator that she got the msg
and JUST now the phone just suddenly went blank and now it says that has to reset the device completely. I didn't even touch the phone I just noticed that it had lost the wallpaper suddenly and then tried to reinstall the wallpaper didn't work. Then reset and the phone didn't get on anymore
Luckily after some waiting the screen came and said I can reset the device. Now has to reinstall everything again. Fuuuuck. Would have other things to do than this..

let me know here y it wouldn foot ur bill

Maybe we should start a quest to find that one ultimate ROM that makes this thing into a phone we can rely on.
I bought this phone because I use all of it's features heavily, I text and email and call and view documents, and surf the web and listen to music and watch videos and more constantly on this thing.
For it to be unreliable negates all the good functions it has.
How about we all work on finding/testing one ROM that is priority #1 Reliable?

lol...seems kind of a self defeating goal. Can there be anything such as the one perfect Rom when we each have our individual preferences and priorities? Also, we have to factor in the reality that the networks themselves are not reliable. So, if ATnT or Verizon drops calls and text messages, can we really say it is the Rom that is unreliable?

I was thinking of making one that can be the basis ROM from which all others are birthed. Or at least find what formula or tricks we could apply to make the ROMs better?
lawlz. Good Luck finding the 100% perfect rom.
If you look at each rom's thread, each new rom they release more likely has a new OS build. Then each new build has their own issues, either from previous version or new issue entirely.
IF the rom the chefs release is just plain unusable, they normally release a FIXED rom with the same build.
Known issues are just that, chefs normally don't fix them because they just can't. So hoping for a new build of the software might fix it.
Each of the roms' issues can be fixed with patches, there are general patches that can be found all over or a patch by the chef when they sometimes forget to fix an issue unique to their rom.
From what i've been noticing, no chefs has cooked up the same rom more than 5 times to fix some issues until it is 100% perfect. By the time they do that, there's a new build of the software and they'll be cooking that instead. Not only just the OS build, they'll also add/remove some programs, change programs to newer versions.
All of these combined will introduce new issues.
Then the cycle continues...
There's about 20 or more Rom selection out there that you can choose from. There's gotta be one that is close to your preferences.
A rom that is deemed 100% reliable to others may not be the same to you.

Perhaps then we should deem what is reliable. Firstly, 100%, I know, is too much to ask for, but I want as close as I can get.
So reliability to me means: I can use the phone as it was meant to be used.
This means: no freezing, no need to reset constantly, when someone calls me I can see the caller ID, etc
Simple and easy.
Now is that too much to ask for?

Well there are Roms that are really reliable and very fast. I'm using the same custom ROM for a long time now... I never had to reset, no freezing. It just works.
It's more stable then stock even. Just search in the first 3 pages of the rom thread for the touch x roms.
So no it's not to much to ask. I think this thread should be closed because it's only about whining. Nothing constructive.
EDIT: and that's not the only ROM that is stable. And let me remind you that al cooks are doing it for fun and free willing. As end user you can't complain. You have no right. Asking and making requests is fine, but I'm getting sick of people saying nobody is listening or will respond on questions asked multiple times and awnsered multiple times. The same is for people screaming other people don't make them what they want while they have to knowledge about the subject at all.
This is not ment offensive in any way to anyone.

Well, as I said in the first few post, it is not the fault of the chefs, and I appreciate greatly all their efforts. I never complained about the chefs and their ROMS, it is the system itself. Perhaps I am asking Windows Mobile to be better.
It think it boils down to Microsoft building a system that is not up to par, then HTC trying to hack on their software which creates a system that is is inherently flawed.
I fully support and am grateful for all the custom ROMs out there. At least it gives us more interesting choices.

Wow dude you honestly owe her an apology. You sound like a total douche for ****ing up your phone and firing someone for it.
I'm just saying man, the rest of her life she's going to remember you as a douche for your own mistake.

Why is my phone so slow!!!

is it too much to ask for my phone to load something up in no more than 2 seconds??
im running on the wm 6.5, im using the "windows default" ROM (if thats even the right word for going into settings>today>items and unchecking HTC sense) its just that it really pisses me off when im bout to text someone and i hit the compose button and it takes up to 5 mins to load up the screen. or when im getting a new friend or clients number and i have to tell them to wait for my address book to show up on the screen
any help would be greatly appreciated
Build your own ROM. I'm currently using WM 6.1 and everything loads extremely quick. PIE is up instantly and new contacts or txt messages take less than 2 seconds to load.
Your phone is slow because of the underpowered, obsolete Qualcomm MSM7xxx processor powering your WVGA device, coupled with bloated software. Custom ROMs are an easy improvement, as they often have many integrated tweaks for speed. There are some other easy tweaks found around the forum which will help speed up the device, but don't expect it to ever run like an HD2.
yeah, i'm using the "Energy" rom. pretty fast, and it's even more stable.
However; it's not fast enough.. Is there a programm (name??) to tune my Processor?
im on stock rom and my phone is very fast n slick, of course with some help from xda..lmao if u want to speed up stock rom, get and install these cabs: Tilt 2 data fix, SD tune up, no push internet, dynamic resource proxy, and the memory leak mod. all of these i found thru this forum. its night and day difference in how fast everything is. easy installs. i also have the atm dng 3d driver installed..that really helped the UI to make it slick. also get crud scraper, which i have. it deletes any and all traces of at&t bloatware or any carrier bloatware. actually, u need to do that first..delete all bloatware, u dont need a custom rom to eliminate bloatware. if all else fails, then flash a new rom cuz that requires the most for u to do. n remember, all of these things can be found right here on xda, no matter which route u tke. these stock roms arent as bad as people make them seem..at least not all the roms..juss like people, no device is perfect ;P some TLC will get ya up to speed.
thanx guys.. i guess it sounds like i should look into some ROMS. if anyone knows of a simple but good one please let me kno. I've tried SBP mobile shell and while it looks cool, its just too much. i dont need fancy animations, just something that looks need and that works.. if that makes sense.. :/
i agree that wm6.5 on the tp2 is rediculously slow and freezes, that is why I upgraded back to wm6.1...
.
is that what you guys mean when you wish it was "faster"? the tp2 on wm6.1 is pretty darn good imho...

im posting frm device so cant post links or dont know how yet thru android..lol if no one comes with the links, just use the search here. theres a cab i saw sir phunk post in the general thread, thats called TP2 welcome basket ..it has the no push internet and dynamic resource proxy in it. the data fix, memory leak mod, sd tune up can be found(i believe) through the search. i got all of them here frm xda. the atm dng 3d driver isnt needed but seemed to speed up and smooth out the tf3d UI a lot. srry dont hve links installing those is easier thn flashing a new rom and u dont void ur warranty
ill be flashing a new rom eventually, not for speed, but to see some different set ups. stock rom is good enuff for me..........for now............... u just have to do the homework n find a good reliable new rom to flash or try what i did(which was recommended to me by veteran members). it wrked out for my tilt2.
now that i think about it, someone, who knows how..lol, should put all of those together in a zip file package or something. along with crud scraper to get rid of bloatware. and post it to the apps thread. like a startup kit to get ur phone up to speed b4 flashing new roms eventually. i aint gnna lie though, im leary at the moment on flashing, but im gaining more confidence on it. i did the homewrk n have all the files, hardspl and energy rom. i just havent flashed yet. i forgot da radio..lmao see..lol whichever route u take, u cant go wrong buddy.

How many contacts do you have? I have over 5k and it makes my phone act just as you described. If I remove my contact list, it gets a lot faster.
Does anyone else have this problem. Even when I hang up from a phone call the phone is unresponsive for as long as a minute.

Good lord, you know a lot of people.
I use my phone for business and being in sales means I have lots of contacts. I'm sure I could parse it down to 1k or so most likely used contacts but that would take rediculous amounts of time.

Without bugs? No software is without bugs. With that said, there are many 'non-working' things. Read the main thread, it's got all these words that will answer this question. First 4 posts are great, after that the search feature works wonders.
Also, what happened to trying it out? This is for fun/testing, it's not meant to replace WinMo. So if that's what you're looking for (WinMo replacement) I'd look elsewhere. Like a new phone

"Bugless" is preference, IMO. Sure it runs on my Fuze as long as I stay within the guideliness from the link mentioned in the previous post. If you are looking for benchmarks, you might be better off with a device that actually comes with Android (also IMHO).
By the way what are you attempting to do with this?
Use it as my primary OS. i'm willing to sacrifice the camera for it.

There's a lot of other little quirks, I wouldn't use it as your primary OS - unless your phone isn't used as a phone of course
Most of the problems people truly have usually are related to the phone sleeping and missing calls, or rebooting in a call etc. Stuff that's mission-critical so-to-speak - I know some that use the phone completely unactivated and love Android full time. There's also some I know that have the phone activated and just don't care and use it all the time.
I'd say for most 'normal' people, it's not ready to use full time as your primary OS. But as with anything tech-related - try it for yourself! Don't let my opinion make your decision, only you will be able to tell. That's the greatest thing about this whole project, doesn't damage the phone, no need to flash anything... Try before you buy, except it's free anyways
welll I had it!
When i bought the phone (secound hand or third ) it had it installed already. It was froyo. I playd with it until it crashed! I had several runs until someday when i noticed that sounds ain't working no more. why? don't know.
nevermind...
OFFTOPIC:
I have another problem @ wich i don't find help.
I'm trying to dump the ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427507&page=22 here but I get this error. can someone help me?

It's a lite WinMo ROM that auto loads Haret from SD card the author is MichyPrima
As mentioned in THIS post. In my opinion, the closest that RAPH has been reported to run from nand. Keeping in mind this doesn't actually run from nand.
Just wondering if you tried it or not...

New Tilt Missing Task Manager

... at far right of the task bar.
I believe thats what it is called. I'm looking at my TP2 and see it, looking at the Tilt/2 it has the space for it, but it's not there;
WHAT'S THE DEAL?!?!?!?!
What ROM? Not sure which have it/which don't... Some stock ROM's might not have it at all.

Interestingly I replied to this last night and it's not here, um ...
It's the stock ROM and WM V6.5.
I'm running SPB Mobile Shell 3.x but it wasn't there even before I installed it.

Is it a carrier ROM? Which one?
I'm not on the stock ROM, so even if it's Sprint I won't know if it comes with a task manager.
Why not just install one or flash a ROM with one...?

ATT.
I've tried about 7-10 different task manager files, none really worked.
I'd flash a new ROM if I could get some straight answers as to the most stable and useful one. Everyone has their favorites, so the discussion gets a bit muddled. I'm in a Motorhome right now and may be for longer then I had anticipated, so if I do, I'm not in the position to play/experiment.
Any ideas?
Well of course opinions will muddle the discussion of "most stable and useful" - everyone is going to have a different angle of what they feel fit those criteria.
I don't really use WinMo much anymore (Android is way too much fun ) but EnergyROM always worked well for me. I'm on Titanium lately, because I don't care how it looks - I just want it to boot quickly to get me into Android quickly .

I like Android, but with it phoning home, and the lack of audio through B/T (yet - I need a headset in the car and walking around), I can't use it on a daily basis - yet.
Hell'ava job though!
I've found ark-switch which works - mostly, so I can live with it.
Now if I can just figure out how add programs to a drop down start button, I'll be happy.
