[Q] Just seeking a little advice about restoring the stock RUU... - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'm an Aussie with a Desire HD which has Middle Eastern locales (Got it cheap on Ebay).
All I've done to it thus far is temproot it via Visionary, and used Paul O'Brien's little trick to delete some of the stock apps.
However, an OTA update has become available (1.83.415.4), which I can't install as it wants to update DCSStocks.apk (and there may be others), which no longer exists on my phone.
I was thinking of reapplying the stock RUU for the software version I am currently at (1.32.405.6). Am I right in thinking that this will restore the stock apps to my phone, allowing me to install the OTA update?
So, in summary, the steps I was going to take are as follows:
- Backup all my apps with Titanium Backup
- Install HTC Sync
- Run the official RUU I downloaded from shipped-ROMs
- Restore all my apps with Titanium Backup
Are there any other important considerations I have completely failed to address?
If any of you knowledgeable folk could cast your eyes (and minds) over this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

You are correct, when you flash the RUU as you described, you will be able to install OTA updates again

Thanks very much, mate!
In terms of recovering all of my apps after reapplying the stock RUU, do I have to run/install each and every backed-up APK from the SD-card via Astro (or an equivalent), or is there a quicker way?
For example: Do you think that a reinstalled version of Titanium would be able to recover them in one hit? (I apologise if this is a monumentally stupid question, but I'm not sure exactly how this marvellous little application does its magic).

[Q] Unrooting a Desire completely to stock for warranty repair

Hi,
I'm at my wits end.
I've spent ages (most of last night and all of this morning !) looking through google and This forum, XDA developers etc etc etc and I'm no further forward
I have/had (not sure where I am at the moment.. will explain in a minute) a rooted Desire on FroYo. then my Desire started the overheating problem and randomly rebooting every 3 to 5 minutes. The only way I can keep it running long enough to do anything is to use an ice pack and chill the phone !
Anyway I tried to do a roll-back and lose root access etc and return my desire (UK Vodafone) to stock so I can send it in for a repair.
I initially used my nandroid backup to roll back to the previous version of my software, then I re did the official OTA to 2.2 and it SEEMED to work.. except I still seemed to have root access.. I certainly had the Superuser application in my applications list.
Apparently to delete superuser (or is it Superuser with capital S? I seem to have both?!) You need root (figures!) so.. ran unrevoked again, seemed to unroot again but :-
(a) try as I must i can't uninstall Superuser.apk. Tried using root manager, terminal and adb but I keep getting errors saying something about read write permissions?
(b) I have also read that I may need to restore the official Android recovery (have clockwork mod recovery at the moment) that needs to go too.
I just want to return my Desire back to store/factory.. but I can't seem to do this.
I'm feeling thick as cold mince at the moment.. Seems the process differs depending on different HBOOT versions/ device versions / root methods / day of week / alignment of the planets !!!
can anyone PLEASE help with an idiot (and boy do I mean IDIOT) proof guide to get rid of all traces of my naughtiness and back to a warranty friendly 2.2 Desire??
I think the simplest way is to use the windows-based RUU update files from shipped-roms.com as they'll replace your recovery with a stock one and unroot your phone (sends it completely back to stock vodafone).
The only vodafone UK one i see on there is..
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126338_signed.exe
There are a couple of caveats:
1) you may need to downgrade your hboot before the RUU will sucessfully flash the phone. There's a bunch of threads in the developer forum on how to downgrade hboot, depends on your screen type, which leads to...
2) this is kind of important, is your screen SLCD or AMOLED? The vodafone uk RUU is dated mid-june, so it will almost certainly only work on AMOLED desires. If you got the phone before mid-july it's definitely AMOLED but if you're unsure there are threads about how to check (i think the easiest way is to pull up a dark screen such as the settings menu in a darkened room and see if the black areas of the screen are true black or just very dark grey like on an LCD pc monitor).
Providing your phone is AMOLED, once you've installed that RUU you can use the OTA upgrade in the about phone menu to go from 2.1 to 2.2.
please report back if you have got rid of Superuser that way because i have the same problem
i formatted my sd card and then updated OTA2.2 and for some reason i still have Superuser and i plan on returning to warranty for camera problems

Thats because the OTA (in contrast to a RUU) does not install a completely fresh image of the /system partition (where the root files normally are installed) but just replace/patch most of the existing files. Other files, like su will stay untouched.
You also won't be able to just remove those files as you are obviously s-on, which means even root can't write to system easily.
Some options for you are:
- find a RUU that fits your device and install it (there will be lots of instructions for flashing around) €: Watch out if you have an SLCD!!! Can't state that often enough...
- S-off your device, remove all root files from /system, flash the original recovery/splash/hboot via fastboot (this might help)
i had the same problem, i solved it by flashing a RUU then rerooted. i am fine now
unrooting the original stock rom
Hi guys, I have a similar problem. I rooted my desire with unrevocked 3.21 and everything was fine.
BUT I havent flashed any new rom, I still have the original rom, I was only interested in rooting.
Now I need to sell my phone so I want to restore factory settings.
Can I do it with just doing a "factory reset" or I need to flash using the RUU....exe?
thanks for your support!
Just to be safe use the ruu

[Q] Is there a definitive guide to installing 2.29.405.2 on a rooted phone?

Ive had a look around and theres loads of posts on it, but nothing which really explains what to do for this specific update
Firstly, where can i download the OTA from? i cant see a link anywhere on this forum, i must be looking in the wrong place
Im on a rooted rom and have read on here about all the problems you get when installing the OTA on a rooted rom so was hoping someone could tell me what i need to do to get it. Ive read that unrevoked will remove root afterwards, but as im already rooted, does this mean i need to flash/format my device to a stock rom first (i sure hope not )
The only reason i want this update is for the 90% battery fix which is the only thing which really annoys me about this phone atm
Thanks to anyone that can help
1. Get the 2.29.405.2 RUU
2. Flash
3. Re-root
This is THE best way of getting the update if you're that bothered about it. And you're not looking hard enough for the OTA file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9640589&postcount=70
As always, thanks EddyOS
Hi Eddy!
How i have to run your sig. Ruu?
1. download ruu
2. pc connect with usb cable to phone (htc sync)
3 run the Ruu
The phone is just on and normal?
thank's
If you're going to connect to the PC you need HTC Sync installed on your computer. If you don't want to install that on your PC then just connect the phone in FASTBOOT
Then just run the RUU
thank's Eddy!
Hi Eddy
Im trying to flash this now, but when i do it from the recovery console, it says:
E: No Signature (325 Files)
E: Verification failed
so i cant install the OTA
I cant install it via unrevoked as its not packaged as an image file
Can you tell me where im going wrong
Thanks
what exactly are you trying to flash?
can you give the link?
Its the link which EddyOS put in post #2 above:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...9&postcount=70
right, thats just the OTA update.
i'm assuming you're still rooted? if so, you dont want to run that.
You need to flash the RUU first as Eddy mentioned.
What rom are you currently on? and is it different to the original rom for the phone?
yeah im still rooted. My network is orange, but the last thing i 'installed' was 2.10.405.2-initd-rooted-stock-v2.zip
Are you able to link me to the RUU or whichever file i need? would be much appreciated
ok, you must have created a goldcard then?
the 2.29.405.2 RUU can be found here - http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe
once you've confirmed you've got a goldcard, run the RUU while you're phone is in Fastboot.
make sure you backup anything that you need as this will wip your phone and unroot.
and do a nand backup just in case...
ah excellent. thanks very much. yeah i do have a goldcard
one last question(s) though...whats a nand backup? and how do i do one?
also, can i reroot after using unrevoked?
you can do a nand backup through the recovery panels (power & vol down) or through ROM manager if you have it installed.
this should give you a backup to go back to if running the RUU gives problems.
and yes, you can root with unrevoked after you've run the RUU.
excellent. thank you sooo much for all the help
no problem, let us know how you get on....
everything seems to have gone ok just restoring all my apps now using mybackup, but the new rom is all loaded up and running fine. will let you know over the next few days if any issues arise
Good news!!!
Keep the RUU safe incase you need it in the future
lame...seems i was a bit to quick to say everything went well
so before i ran the ruu, i backed up all my apps (apks + data) using mybackup pro
however, now it doesnt restore any of the apps i saved to my SD card. When i go into the apps manager after restoring the backup, it shows no apps installed there. and when viewing all apps, it only shows the ones installed on my internal memory
Any idea why this is happening? I do have root and have restored the backup with superuser permissions
not too sure as i use Titanium.
have you tried restoring 1 by 1? you may have 1 corrupt backup thats preventing the rest from being restored - i'm sure i've read about something similar.
also, if you haven't customized your phone too much since the RUU/root, you could boot into recovery and run a full wipe again and reboot. it may help...
EDIT - you've not still got your phone connected to your PC by chance have you?
if its mounted as a drive you wont have access to your SDcard.....

[Q]Possible to return system apps as they were?

Hey,
I was wondering if there is a way to give back system applications from another DHD, if previously I removed them?
E.G.:
- Copy from one DHD soundhound apk to my DHD
- Install it as system apk
- In titanium backup is recognized as system apk
So, is that possible?
Grettings
Yes, it is possible.
So there will not be any trace, that app was removed before?
If you have the .apk file, just load on your SD card and install via your favourite file manager. It shouldn't matter that the app is now installed into /data/app not /system/app .
Actual system apps like the dialer shouldn't be moved.
Well, yes thats true.
I removed amazon mp3, stock (app and widget) and soundhound. I am asking if it will not be revognized regarding to warranty. Is there any other way to return these apps as original installed? I saw something to do with RUU, but I dont have that app, also I uninstalled apps with titanium backup. Now I would like to retrieve them back and just freeze them. So in case that anything goes wrong with phone, I just unfreeze them and give phone to repair...
EDIT:
I tried with one application to copy it to /system/app and set permission as it should be (user read and write, group and others just read). After that I installed it from /system/app as I though it will be installed as system app, but it did not. My stupid thinking... :s
The RUU (ROM Update Utility) will reflash your handset back to default settings and apps. If you can find the correct RUU for your DHD then you can flash that.
You will lose any personal settings doing this, also contacts that are saved on the phone. Your SD card will remain as it is.
You should always make a backup before you remove anything, at least now in the future you will.
Yea well, it will learn me . However, maybe you can point me where to get RUU or even, how to search for correct RUU for my DHD?
Thank you alot for helping me in this crazy mess I did to myself...
Sure, if you take a look over in the dev section, one of the stickies is DesireHD Files. You should be able to find it in there.
Is your DHD unbranded?
I got it with contract of my provider. But there is no logotip of them, also there is no any applications from them, except sim toolkit, which is hided if I insert sim card from another provider (so yes, phone is sim unlocked by default). So I belive that is ubranded.
And software information:
Android version: 2.2
Baseband version: 2.6.32.21-gf3f553d

Build Number: 1.32.405.6 CL278359 release keys
Software number: 1.32.405.6
Browser version: WebKit 3.1
I will try to search correct one and will edit this post in few mins, if I think I got one
EDIT:
By infos I gave from my phone and a little bit of compare, is it possible that this RUU is correct for me:
# RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26 .03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed
Should be fine, before you start ensure you have the correct HTC drivers, installing HTC Sync will ensure this.
HTC sync allready installed also sync with PC is done. Drivers should be fine as HTCsync recognize my phone. Should I do some backup with ROM manager, just in case if something goes wrong?
However I have now 4 hours to download this file, so also have time to do a backup . And after fresh install of this stock rom, first thing I will do is full backup hehe.
After running the RUU you will lose root, S-OFF & ClockworkMod Recovery, however with the RUU you are going to use, these can easily be reapplied.
Once you have done this make a Clockwork Mod backup, then if you have any issues, you have this "Virgin" state to restore to.
Andy, I really don`t know how to thank you for all your help . I just recover back my DHD with that RUU, as I though it is correct. For secure reason I checked software information and it match from start to end .
One last thing, how to make a Clockwork Mod backup?
No problem at all. I'm glad I could help.
I'm assuming you have now rooted & achieved S-OFF. From within Android Market download ROM Manager, flash ClockworkMod Recovery from within there.
Some users experience problems and have to flash ClockworkMod Recovery a second time from within ROM Manager.
Now that is done. Backups can be made from within ROM Manager "Backup Current ROM", or from within ClockworkMod Recovery.
Aha, so it should be done with ROM Manager, as I thought . I need S-OFF aswell? So back to work with Visionary and Easy Radio tool .
I own you a beer, juice or just coffee (next year Im moving from Slovenia to UK)
EDIT:
Backup is on the way
Again THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!
As I noticed, that this RUU is not 100% same as my old stock ROM (this one has less languages), I would like to ask you if it is possible:
- Create ROM backup with ROM Manager from another DHD from same country as I am (Slovenia)
- Get that backup on my SD card
- Recover that backup with ROM manager on my DHD
Is it possible?
Yes that would work. This is the order I would do it.
Other DHD
1). Create Backup (ROM Manager)
2). Factory Reset
3). Create 2nd Backup (CWM Recovery)
4). Restore 1st Backup
Your DHD
1). Create Backup
2). Restore Using 2nd Backup Above.
I would do this to avoid any issues with Google accounts, settings, etc...
Obviously the Other DHD needs to be rooted, S-OFF & have ClockworkMod Recovery installed.
What I`ve done wrong previously it was Stock CID... Original stock in Slovenia is HTC__032 (HTC-EastEurope), but I set it to HTC__001. Hope with this restore it will help me...
Performing this wouldn't affect your CID, If your CID is now HTC_001 then after this it will be the same.
But Easy Radio tool v2_2 should change it? First time I did root, I made Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock (all what without any need). After that I made Stock CID to HTC__001. So is it possible, that I changed that?

[Q] Planning to pop my rooting/new ROM cherry

So I was kinda scared about putting Android on my old HD2 but I think things look a bit easier on my DHD so I'm planning on taking this big step
Just a couple of quick questions:
Will this SuperOneClick method work on my DHD?
Does this guide look comprehensive enough to you guys? Any missing steps, or things I might trip up on? I'm fairly PC-savvy but know next to nothing about this kind of thing
Thinking about CM7 (which I know is popular) or Revolution HD (as I like/am used to Sense). Any big pros or cons I should know about first?
Any tips or words of encouragement/reassurance would go a long way
Oh and in case it's important:
Desire HD
Vodafone UK
Android 2.2.1
Baseband 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
Kernel 2.6.32.21-g3d0aaff
Build 1.72.405.3 CL296490 release-keys
Software 1.72.405.3
I Recommend this one-click tool by jkoljo tool since it's what i used
One Click Radio S-Off
Also one thing the guide doesn't mention is you probably need to downgrade the rom since HTC made it so you can't root with that version, so follow this guide to downgrade. The guide also mentions using ENG S-OFF with you don't really need unless you're gonna play with fastboot commands. so just use Radio S-OFF it safer and easier to remove in case you need to go back to stock.
Downgrade Guide
Or else the guide looks pretty fool proof but unless you try to flash a radio there should be no risk to brick it the worst that could happen is a boot loop and those are pretty easy to get out of.
Also i can recommend Android Revolution since it's what i currently use, though i i've been wanting to try out MIUI but don't want the hassle of a full wipe again.
But good luck with rooting you're not gonna regret it
EDIT: Okay the guide does mention downgrade so just ignore what i said about that -.-
You can find the downgrade guide --> HERE
Thanks both for your advice, good to know these extra bits of info.
The last thing I forgot to ask was about backing up things like photos, apps and SMS messages. At what stage in the process (rooting -> flashing ROM) does that happen? Or is it even possible?
I've heard people talk about Titanium Back-up but I don't know when you use that, nor which things it works for and which things I would lose if I do this.
Photos that are on your SD card will not be touched by rooting and flashing ROMs.
Apps can be backed up with Titanium Backup, or you can install them again from the Market.
You can back up your SMS' with SMS Backup+ from the Market, its free and stores everything in your GMail account so you can easily restore them.
Titanium Backup will simply backup your apps to your SD card. You might experience problems when restoring apps from HTC Sense 2.2 to CM7 2.3, but then again you might not.
Right, well I think I've fallen at the first hurdle... :/
I used SuperOneClick and it did its thing (ran the check at the end, said everything was OK) and put SuperUser onto my phone.
So then I got Titanium Back-up to back-up all my apps etc and when I open it, it tells me I don't have root...
I think my problem is that I can't root as I'm on software 1.72...?
The downgrade guide says to root I have to be 1.3, but says that before downgrading I should back-up with Titanium. But how can I use Titanium if I don't have root, when I need to downgrade to root in the first place...?!
Argh any help out there, please?
SuperOneClick does not work for Desire HD. How about reading some guides in the android dev forum? There are a few links in my sig that give you full root + s-off, check them out. I recommend the radio s-off tool.
Hi jkoljo - thanks for the tip re. SuperOneClick not working with (my) DHD. Was driving me crazy.
I'm looking at your sig links - I think I need to follow the ENG S-OFF and Radio "Swiss Knife" ones? - but both say that I need to root with Visionary first...
I think this guide is what I need...?
If someone could also help me order the process below that would be a big help.
1. Root with Visionary
2. Backup apps using Titanium
3. Downgrade to software v1.32
4. Flash new ROM (Android Revolution HD or CM7)
5. Restore apps using Titanium
Oh and one extra qu: the CM site doesn't list the DHD as a compatible device. Should I use normal Desire, Evo 4G, something else...?
0. Backup with my backup pro, Titanium does not work without root
1. Downgrade
2. Follow my radio s-off guide, there is a link to visionary, just get the apk and use the app.
3. Follow my eng s-off guide
4. Done.
You can also refer to the ROM flashing guide, it has all the steps one after the other CM7 is compatible, just check the Android dev subforum. That list you linked is outdated.
Thanks jkoljo.
Worked through all the steps and I think it went OK. Now cracking on with flashing new ROM as per this guide...
1. Do I need to worry about the 'Flashing a radio' step(s)?
2. Reading through the instructions before I try it, it talks about doing a 'nandroid backup'. Not quite sure what this means - I searched Android Market for nandroid and nandroid backup but only three things came up, none of which seemed right.
Cheers!

Nandroid backup is the backup solution incorporated into Clockwork recovery, it allows you to take a system snapshot, a la ghost, which will allow you to restore your system as is.

Right, gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up. Now I just need to know if I have to flash my radio too or not and I'll be good to go!
Clearest thread on rooting that I have seen. Thanks for starting and thanks to contributors.

[Q] RUU Help Required

Does anyone know what RUU to apply to a Hutchinson 3G Ireland branded HOX? I'm assuming it's an ireland specific RUU rather than the UK release for the same service provider, but I can't source it & my firmware's borked. Heavy graphics processing, video playing & some settings sliders all cause a crash-reboot. Don't want to have to wait for S-OFF to get my phone fully working again!
For reference, it's htc boot-unlocked & rooted, and I think the problem came from trying to apply an ota (which failed to fully flash) after flashing an unbranded stock rom on it. I'm such a dumbass.
If the RUU isn't available then restoring the backup you made before rooting is the only way to get back
Thanks, I'd actually managed to forget about the full pre-root backup I did. I'll crack that out tonight & comment here on how I got along.
Quick follow-up question: I take it an adb backup would include the firmware in the system data?
Just flash the CWM backup you made and that'll be enough. Then flash the stock recovery and relock the bootloader
I just hope that I remembered to take the CWM backup off my phone! Comedy of fecking errors.
Phew! Had my original CWM backup, restored fine, sucessful OTA update applied. Didn't need to re-bootlock though, which is a relief. Re-root tonight & wait till S-OFF is achieved before I go looking at other ROMs. Thanks for the help!
Glad it worked. What I'd do at this point is wipe the phone and take a fresh backup in case your current versions RUU never surfaces. Then re-root and restore your apps from Titanium Backup (if you used that)
EDIT: Quick question - what software version are you on now?
