[Q] Mobile data is stuck on "G" - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have finally acquired a data plan from my cell provider, and today I set up the APN settings for it. However, whenever I turn off the wifi, I only get the "G" (GPRS) icon in the status bar, with unbelievable slow download/upload speeds.
I just now tried flashing my radio to Radio_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_SF (Even though I believe I had it before as well), and still I can't get it up to "H" (HSPDA).
I asked a co-worker with a Galaxy S on the same cell provider, and he has HSPDA speed at the same location as I. I also compared his APN settings to mine.
What can cause this error? Should I try flashing a different radio? is the Radio_12.39.60.19_26.06.04.06_M or Radio_12.35d.60.140f_26.06.03.24_M2 better in any way? Are they stable? Is this even the cause of my problem?
Moved to here

Go onto the dialer. Type in *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone information. Scroll down to the bottom and change 'Set preferred network type:' to 'GSM Auto (PRL)'.
Also, this is the wrong section.

This is not the place to post questions.
There is a QA section here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=885
Try **#4636#*#* and select GSM auto prl

WCDMA Only on WP7

Is there way to disable 2g/enable 3g only on WP7? I have a T-Mobile HD7 if that makes a difference.
On Android, you can go to the dialer, type in *#*#4636#*#* and it puts you in a menu where you can change it from WCDMA preferred to WCDMA only. I want that same functionality on my HD7 if possible.
I found the answer shortly after posting this. I swear I searched. Well anyway, to let anyone who wants to know, here are the steps:
Go to the phone dialer
Type ##3282#, Call
Tap the ... on the lower right of the screen
Tap Settings
Under "Network Type", select "3G Only"
Going back into the ##3282# menu/settings shows "Automatic" in the "Network Type" box, but it stays on 3G, indefinitely. I'll report back here if that changes.
thanks for the tip, might want to add it to the tips and tricks thread.
Can you set it to 2G only? I live in a low network area and sometimes calls drop out when switching from the weak 3G signal to the strong 2G signal

I know the hd7 has that option under cellular but apparently not all phones have this.
What are the benefits of doing this?
It's already in tips - it's called Field Test

If your phone has a 3G signal but the Edge signal is stronger, it reverts to Edge. You lose calling capabilities when not in a 3G area but if you are never out of range it stays in 3G all the time, as in my case.

I checked tips and could not find it. Search doesn't allow the search "3G" because it is too short and it finds no results for "3G only" and for "WCDMA only". Who would know to look for "Field Test"?
Not me either - I wasn't having a go at you, just saying it was in there
I know. I was commiserating. Sometimes techies aren't clear about what certain functions do. I consider myself a techie of sorts but I'm not a programmer. It was very difficult for me to find. It took 2 days of searching.
When you set the 3G only change, does it stick?
I'm trying it on my Quantum and no matter what I pick, 2G/3G/automatic, nothing happens..
3G lock is nice for me because I have dialup at home, and I can just throw the phone in 3G mode and tether.

Can you change how the phone switches from 2G/3G

I have problems getting a 3G reception at work. My desire displays the H symbol but just doesn't connect to internet at times. If I manually switch to 2G I can connect. It's really slow but better than nothing! I can leave it on 2g all day but as the H signal works intermittently I like to try the 3g signal first before switching back to 2g.
What I would like to know is if there is there a way to change the minimum H signal the phone has to have before it goes down to E. My phone seems to prefer H even if the signal is too low to connect.
Can this be changed?
Yes.
Go to to the secret menu *#*#4636#*#* and select phone information.
Scroll down to the bottom and change
set preferred network type to GSM only.
I think this is a good idea to put through for the already excellent "Toggle2G" app. Thanks for bringing it up

Thanks, didnt know about the secret menu!
Going by the word preferred it sounds like it is what I am looking for but 'GSM only' makes me think it wont switch to 3G.
Does this mean it disables 3G completely? Couldnt I do that just by going into settings and selecting use 2g networks only?
Edit
Just searched GSM only and found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=688492. A good explanation of each setting, think GSM auto (PRL) is what I am looking for as GSM only is just 2G but I can usually get a 3G signal so I'll give this a try.

WCDMA preferred?

How can you set the Defy to WCDMA Preferred? It constantly reverts off of it.

You mean in the INFO menu? I don't believe you can. At least not with the stock ROM. I believe the choice is controlled by the firmware which varies from market to market, I presume.
That's the same as 3G only? Mine has the option under the mobile network settings. I get three choices (this is exactly how it reads): 2G only saves battery, 3G only better performance, and Automatic Default. Hm you should have the same thing.
In my handset, if you go into Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile networks, there is an option/drop-down box for Select network.
It gives you a choice between 2G only, 3G only and Automatic which is the default option and the only sensible one IMO.
edit: same as bobbyphoenix it seems.
Selecting 3G only means the phone will not use the 2G network ever, so if you were to end up in an area without 3G signal, you'd be disconnected.
Automatic means the phone will use 3G when available and 2G when it's not. As I said before, it's the only sensible choice.

That doesn't answer the question. There are two settings within the testing menu: wcdma preferred and gsm auto prl. The former tries to hang onto 3G whenever possible, where the latter uses an internal list of networks and it decides when to switch.

Yes it does.
Automatic means the handset will use 3G whenever possible - ie 3G preferred.
No - they are two different things, as I explained. The Defy is using GSM PRL, NOT WCDMA Preferred.

When my phone uses wifi calling with wifi preferred (in the wifi calling menu) the INFO (testing) menu shows "GSM only". This choice will not allow 3G connection (2G, yes). When I turn off wifi, the phone switches to "GSM auto (prl)" and I get 3G. I read on one forum where someone claims they switched to "WCDMA preferred" then did a battery pull and it stuck. Also read that the WCDMA selection depletes battery faster. Hey, don't always believe what you read.

Lost LTE APN Options

I was mucking about like an idiot in the ##DATA# menu and in trying to get LTE here (we're covered but my phone doesn't seem able to connect), I hit "reset APN defaults" and the 6 options I had turned into 2.
No big deal you'd think but now I can't even get a 3G signal with CDMA/LTE as my option in the regular network area of the OS. I can only get a 3G signal when I have CDMA (exclusively) selected.
The weird part is I do get a temporary 3G signal when I update my profile or PRL but then it vanishes again upon completion. I also get 3G when I force roam with Roam Control.
Does anyone have any ideas? How can I get that old APN menu back and/or fix this lack of data when not in CDMA only mode?
For anyone who runs into the same issue, your bog standard factory reset takes care of it.

Strange Signal drop and reception problems

I bought and unlocked galaxy s3 att in India,I live in apartments,I'm getting 3-4 bars when I sit near the windows and when I come to room I loose signal,And the strange things is When I hold my mobile with left hand signal drops like crazy leaving only 1 bar,I tried Carbon, quantum,Slimrom still none resolved the issue
I updated my modem to UCDMG2 running 4.1.1,still same problem,And another things is 4g icon it shows still connects to 2g networks,I mean speed is worse like 2g still it shows 4g,custom roms too have that problem, when i select LTE it shows H+ only and I get 2g speeds,I'm using airtel network, they have good coverage and network speeds
Did you check your APN settings to see if they are correct? There is an option sometimes that will push for 2g. Also if you are using multiple apns there are APN types that can be put in that will make it choose that APN as a priority over others. I am not certain without looking it up but I think it may be "hipri" don't quote me though.
For example if u had multiple apns and that type was liatedbon one of them other than the correct one for say proper late connection.. It could perhaps use the one you are not wanting
This is just me reaching and it may not be The cause but doblook at your APN settings.
First I'd research what the current correct APN setup for your carrier is
Good luck
If you want to see your true connection, go to Settings > About Device > Status > Network Type
Have you checked to make sure your carrier uses the bands/frequencies supported by the device?
Thanks fo r your quick response guys, But I'm using quantum rom now, Even If I select 3g or Lte it shows As if it is using EDGE,
3g and 4g are not currently available in our area ,and that Grip problem persists too, I loose signal if I hold both sides of my device with on e hand , and it gains signal bars if I release the left side of my device(I heard the antenna is situated at the bottom of device )!
