I've recently got the multimedia stand and have been successful getting the phone in with the otterbox case on the only thing that seems to be in the way is the rubber tab covering the USB port. Makes it stand up funny and just be a general pain in the butt.
My question being, is it essential to have that rubber tab? Is cutting it off going to work? Does anyone do this? Thanks

I've thought about cutting it off. All it does is cover the USB port. If you aren't worried about it, cut it off.

I'm working on an idea for a motorcycle mount for my EVO. I have a RAM mount with the AMPS bolt pattern but what I need is a metal snap on case if there is such a thing. I'm going to have to drill it and I don't think a plastic case will hold up over time. There may even be a problem with the fitment as I'll need to use very thin screw heads and washers. Any metal or THICK plastic snap on cases out there?
I realize this will probably hurt my signal strength but it will be plugged into the charger the entire time. Will it screw up NAV (GPS) and the compass though?
And of course it has to be secure (won't pop out as I go over a rail road track) but fairly easy for me to get the phone out when we stop to eat or something. (I know - picky, picky). Being as safety conscience as I am I'll probably put a thick rubber band around one end while I'm riding anyway
Thanks.
Steve

5 seconds on Google and I found this.

I think it would get really hot and uncomfortable to hold. I could be wrong though

Seems like a bad idea... wait for a ram for it or see if you can request one...
Mine overheats in my tank bag while on the charger. I imagine a metal case would do the same.

The Powermat dock door comes with a blockage that plugs into the usb port and keeps it covered when its on, and the case for the Evo I have now wont fit over the new dock door, so is there a case that anybody knows of that would.
I second this. I would love to get a case that covers the new door as it is larger than the original back case.

what cases do you have? I would think a Gel case (I have the one from Sprint) might have enough give in order to stretch around it.

What I am trying to figure out is why the hell they designed it with that nub. If you want to usb to your computer do you have to take the battery cover off? Or how about charging in your car?

I currently have a Trident Cyclops case. Now, me being me saw this post and looked at my case and said, "Surely this can be modded to fit." The other voice in my head said "This can be modded, and don't call me Surely." Any who, I wanted a Powermat for some strange reason. Do I really need one, you ask? Doesn't my battery last almost all day anyway, you ask? Yes, but who doesn't want something that passes electricity wirelessly through the air to their phone? So off to Best Buy I went to blow my niece's Christmas present money on a shiny new door and base charger. After a few hours with a dremel, some sand paper, a file, and my utility knife, I had a hard case that supported the nub and the slightly thicker door. It being my first mod ever of sorts like this, it worked out all right. Looking at it, you would not notice any modded difference other than my knife slipped while trimming the rubber flap that covers the USB and HDMI ports and a few mishaps with the dremel (that thing spins REALLY fast!). I wish I had something to post screen shots with of it on my phone, but I am too lazy to break out the DSLR at the moment, It's beddy bye time. Any way, I am pretty sure that the second time around I would be able to mod the case so you would not notice any difference from stock other than the rubber door being trimmed. This mod also allows for me to remove the connector from the door to the USB plug with out having to remove the case at all, and easily too, in case I need to throw the USB cable in it to link to my computer. If any one is intetested, PM me and I will throw up some screen shots tomorrow night. When the holidays are over and my wallet can support it, I may blow my other niece's birthday cash on another Trident Cyclops case and redo it to perfection.

And if your only concern if the USB plug, it is actually a separate piece that easily removes from the phone in case of needing car charger or USB cable for the computer without needing to pull the battery door off.

I'm beginning to believe that Verizon's case manufacturer made a pretty big screw-up...
Has anyone purchased the dock and the case? Due to the cost of these accessories, it's unlikely that many people buy the dock AND the case that sits it upright... For those that did: If you notice, the dock has a second insert for use if you also bought the case. Now, if you actually do swap out the dock inserts, in order to dock the device with the case; you have to unfold the flap as if you were standing it up anyways...
If you do this, and use the insert for the case--- there is lots of room if you dock it in this fashion. There's virtually no way to bend the case 'enough' to make it fit with the case on, so why send the secondary insert?
Now, if you do this... (silly I know) install the case on your Xoom upside down!
Wait for it...
That's right... it fits PERFECTLY on the dock with the additional insert when loaded in this fashion.
Now... we've read so many complaints about not being able to charge the device while in the case and having the device closed... If you install it "upside down" you'll notice both the usb connector, the 2x media contacts, and the power port is exposed and usable while closed.
OK, so what's the catch? The volume buttons are covered up. (/facepalm)
Quite clearly there was at least one manufacturing 'oops' here... Clearly the design of the case that went into production was somehow mirrored the 'opening' to the wrong side...
So... My point...
The dock insert is useless...???
I believe the insert is for use when you have the silicone case on the xoom and maybe some future cases. I just take my xoom out of the case when I use the dock at night. Will be looking at the silicone cases this week to see how it looks and feels on the xoom.
Dock insert is for gel case. Works perfect with the gel case and insert.

Wow--- I completely forgot those existed. Makes sense now, although you have to admit it is as if the cad design on the folder case must have gotten flipped or something, lol. Poor design all around.
Looks like I'm returning the Xoom anyways, with Sprint announcing their release of a 4G ready Xoom next month, and what seems to be Verizon is blocking PPTP traffic... I'm wavering...
For those of you removing the Xoom from the folio case, does it seem to cause any undue wear and tare on the tabs that lock the Xoom in? I have the dock and case but am still waiting on delivery of the Xoom.

I have no wear at all. The case is flexable enough to loosen one side out at a time, do not snap or pop the Xoom in and out and you have nothing to worry about. I was worried about this as well after reading the post, which I now see were exagerated, and legit damage was likely operator error.

I agree, I haven't noticed any wear and I take the case off every night to put the xoom on the dock.

Some people were complaining about lags and loss of performance when the Xoom is operated in upside-down orientation... I charged upside-down (no dock though) and of course it works
Do they exist? I have the incipio case Verizon sells and I loved it until I found out about the prongs. Now it seems like a pain.

TPU case has hole for prongs.
I'm not too sure if it's a good idea, even if these case have cut outs for the pogo pin, will these stands or connectors allow you to have the case on whiles connected up, cases are available in all sizes, to have a stand to accept the case, thats going to be a problem, and if someone decides to use the stand without a case, it will be loose.
I had an otterbox commuter since I bought my Atrix, but after getting a couple of docks I jettisoned it. Well last weekend I smashed it to pieces, so for it's replacement I was determined to get the docks and the case to play nice.
I was shocked at how easy it really was. First remove the dock insert, then on the silicone under-layer of the case, simply cut off the plug covers and the phone plugs right into the dock without any hassle.
But I wasn't done, in that configuration the whole phone is basically supported by the usb port. An accidental bump or nudge could render the phone nonchargeable- no good. So I set to work with an exacto knife trimming out the dock insert until it was just right to provide support to the back of the case, broke out a little sand paper to smooth out the roughest portions, and presto! Pics below.
Oh yeah, before anyone brings it up, I'll be seeing what I can do about the car dock next.
Any idea if the defender could work
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
I've never actually put hands on the defender, so I don't know how much chunkier it is than the commuter. It looks like the defender layers are reversed; the hard candy shell inside, and the rubber around that? Try putting the case in the dock without the insert, and without the rubber wrapper, and see if the usb plug reaches the phone. If so, it may be worth trying cutting the port plugs off. Otherwise, it depends how hands on you want to get with removing more from the dock than just the insert. But the standard docks are $15 on amazon, so if you hack it all up to pieces and it doesn't work, you've not lost too much in the name of science.
As it happens, I took my dremmel to my car dock last night and it was promising at first, but by the time I got enough material removed for the phone to sit in the dock with the case on, it was being held less snugly than it is in my standard dock, and I hadn't even worked out how to get the usb plug to line up right. [sour grapes] I hate the car dock launcher interface anyways, so I'm just going to buy a second standard dock and mount it to my dashboard.
Ummm....if that's an Otterbox Commuter on your phone in those pics...it don't look nothin' like the two I have or the one's on Otterbox's website.

Don't know whose website you're visiting, but the commuter case is as shown below. The first pic in op was just the gooey center so you could see where the cut was made. From the front you can't see much of the hard candy coating anyhow, but it was there....
In that first pic, it looks like there's a different plastic shell on the front side. I see it now though. Sorry 'bout that.
