The biggest difference is that CM6 runs Froyo and CM7 runs Gingerbread.
http://www.androidtapp.com/whats-new-in-gingerbread-android-2-3/
Pretty much all of this applies, except for the NFC thing. That is a hardware thing specific to the Nexus S. I'm not sure if the internet calling thing works, but the option is there in CM7.
As for differences in terms of bugs, CM7 seems a bit more stable in terms of battery consumption and "Android System" wake locks (though I might jinks myself for saying that). Also, there's a bit of a GPS bug in CM7. For GPS to work properly you might need to punch ##GPSCLRX# into the phone on a Sense-based rom. Doing that will clear the data on the GPS chip and somehow make the GPS work in CM7.
Other than that, it's pretty much the same. Most apps work just fine in gingerbread. CM7 has added a few features. There's support for themes, for one. Also, you can have an unlimited number of notification bar widgets now, since you can now scroll the widgets.

Just from personal experience, CM7 was much buggier than CM6... I had all sorts of FC'S and stuff, plus there's no GPS on CM7 and I use that a lot....
But there's also the possibility that my problems were a combination of the kernel/ROM/whatever since I didn't try different configs on CM7...
they're definitely both worth tryin... And CM7 had some really cool features.. It just wasn't worth it to me to stick with it

The biggest thing is that CM6 is Froyo [2.2] and CM7 is Gingerbread [2.3]. CM7 has a lot of new features [one people like is the tv off screen off animation] The keyboard is a lot nicer. Though CM7 is still in the nightly phase, without WiMax [4G] though you can install the rom for CM7 with WiMax [found in the development section], while CM6 is stable.

There is a fix for the gps issue. You flash a sense rom open dialer run ##gpsclrx# it resets your phone after resetting restore your cm7 rom and you have fully functioning gps. As for the FC's I've had no more problems there. Sure some apps may not have been updated with Gingerbread in mind but that's the apps problem usually not the rom.

Yes, I did the GPS fix and mine is working fine. Also, I haven't had a single FC yet on CM7 w/wimax.

My GPS works fine on all the CM7 nightlies and CM7 with WiMax [build 24].

You realize that CM7 is in Nightly-only stage, right? There's not even a release candidate? It doesn't even qualify as Beta software (though is a bit past Alpha). If you're getting FCs in an RC or Stable, then you have just cause to complain.

Tired of cm7. What's next?

I love cm7 but it's GPS woes have brought me to the point where I need to switch roms. Can I get some recommendations?
World peace with no regard for human life.
You can try deck's which is a stripped version of CM7, that apparently has good gps. If you want sense, you can try the kinged shooter 3.0 rom, or you can locate a bliss 3.5 port.
MIUI give it a whirl!

I'm torn between MIUI and Decks. I hear MIUI is like iOS theme wise. And Decks has more RAM or what? Sense drives me nuts when everything has to reload when I open it back up due to low memory.

I'm not on my computer, but I have the GPS driver that will fix your gps issues immediately. No need to flash to a sense rom and clear your gps. PM if you want it. It's not the gps driver found in the CM7 thread post #2.

MIUI isn't like any theme, because there are an almost infinite way that you can mod and theme it with the built in theme manager.
Also, form something as simple as a built in scree nshot function, to the backup/restore utility, while other ROMs may LOOK nice, none are as functionally sound as MIUI.
It's AOSP, so you still have to do the GPS Fix. but the Sense GPS fix works 100% of the time

Just download the file above and flash. No need to clear the cache. Then boot and launch Navigation. It should pick up your location within seconds...You can also use this file (attached) if the one above doesn't work out. The one below I know for sure works.

If the fix does not work and I cant see it not working fyi - There is a thread in Development strictly related to GPS fixes as a matter of fact its called GPS fixes
The only way I was able to fix my gps was to flash a sense rom so I could use the ##CLRXGPS# code... it rebooted the device and then restored CM7 and got gps working again.

[Q] Cm7.10 to buggy, best nightly after?

Hi guys, the last cm7.10 looks very buggy, so can anyone recommended me a nighly with the least bugs and stability?
thanks
In what way is it buggy? I've been running 7.1 since it was RC1 and now stable release and i've found no bugs. Everything works perfectly for me.

I've read the feedback from members with lots of threads and a lot of them are saying they are having various problems like gps, bluetooth, in call volume etc, so was wondering if there's a decent nightly after the lastest stable with minimum bugs??
Cany anyone in the meantime confirm that the latest cm7.10 rom has: theme chooser, call blacklist feature, and screenshot feature in the power menu??
Much appreciated thanks
If anything, nightly will have more bugs. but to be honest the rom is very stable. The first time you turn GPS on it takes a while but after that it's fine. In call volume is ok for me. I think the mentioned problems arise from people not wiping properly before they flash.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
I'm not sure about the blacklist feature, but theme chooser is there, and screenshot is there too.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
I can confirm that the blacklist is also there. And I also think that CM 7.1 is very stable. I've used it since RC1 too and I've never had problems with bluetooth, gps or in call volume. The only bug I've found is that push notifications for new versions of CM is not working.
Thanks for the comments guys, can someone tell me what are the push notifications? And are there any seperate fixes for this and the the slow gps??
I will be switching from oxygen, so I would just need to ensure I do a clean wipe? When u say properly wipe what does it include? Thanks
I may be completely wrong about this, but I think the reason the first time using GPS is slow is because it needs to configure your location for the first time. After that you should have a quick GPS lock every time.
When wiping you should do factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache.

Camera forces close on decks 1.3, WHY?

When I went to use the camera it started forcing close, I flashed the latest deck rom 2 months ago, the camera was working till now. I rested my phone wiped everything and reflashed 1.3 stable and 1.3b still forces close, so I flagged a sense ROM and the camera works, WTF

has anyone tried extracting and installing the HTC camera on this rom? as far as i can tell, it's just not possible. i extracted HTCCamera.apk from the mikshifted-g rom and renamed it Camera.apk and overwrote the Camera.apk in the zip file of shiftdeck. rom flashed successfully but camera force closes when i try to open it.
anyone know of a way to get the HTC camera on shiftdeck? or is it just not possible? just wish the camera used the full screen like HTC's does.

Anyone come across a solution? Neither the MIUI camera, nor cleaing the data helped my issue. I would really like a solution because I can't stand Sense.
This MIUI Camera has worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15307536&postcount=167
So, I discovered that the camera becomes physically detached from the unit, especially when dropped. I took off the the back-cover and pushed in the camera. Camera works.
Well because your using the wrong deck rom. Use decks 1.3d not b or use decks reloaded which has the base of 1.3d but has all the bugs out and tweaked up.

Ok, now I'm having the same problem again. The Camera app doesn't respond; when I opened it, the interface would half-load and then stop responding, then I'd have to force close. I've replaced it with the MIUI one, and same thing, interface half-loads and freezes. What's interesting though is most applications that utilize the camera works fine, including the Barcode Scanner and Camcorder (video). Any solutions? Is it an app bug, or ROM bug?

I'm very skeptical of the Deck's Reloaded ROM, considering it's 4 times the size. It would seem the more appropriate name would be Deck's ReBloated. But, to be fair, I haven't actually tried it.

Decks Reloaded is 293MB vs 72MB of the original Decks 1.3, and the original Decks included a Kernel too. How long have you been using it? And no camera issues?

Is that the size? I just based it off of what TB said....System rom..367MB (202MB free)--my thinking was it equaled 165MB in size...oh well....
Anyways, I've been on it since the last update --end of May perhaps? No camera issues with either the stock camera or the Miui Camera apk.
Dont use camera much, but no issues either.
Decks Reloaded comes with a kernel, as do most roms no?

I think your right about the size, it just depends on if you load everything from aroma.
As for your camera issue, I've already told you the problem. If you don't want to help yourself then why should people help you. 1.3d is the most stable of the deck roms and reloaded takes all the tweaks and bug fixes that came out after and bakes it into the Rom for you, you would know this if you read the op. Judging a Rom based on size alone leads to failure.

Have you even read the Reloaded op?? It's has several kernel choices and a lot of other options. The zip isn't a reflection of overall rom footprint. Aroma installer allows you multiple options. And yes camera works in Reloaded.

Is it time for JellyBean?

I have been using various TW based ICS Roms for sometime. Darkside, Infamous, etc. I have been so excited to use Jelly Bean and try out project "Butter" I notice there is an official stable release for Cynogen mod 10. Is it time to flash? I get anxiuos about it because I delt with an old HTC HD2 for a year and there were lots of "work arounds" and such. It became rather annoying. So I really like BLN notifications, and having a camera that "Just Works" and decent battery life etc. Are these things I am going to sacrifice. And also, if I wait until there is an official release of JellyBean for our device over the next couple of months would we see more stable builds shortly thereafter? Would it be worth waiting another month or two? or is time for JellyBean? Just curious what folks thoughts are about this? Who is using what? How it works etc? I am really looking for a DD something I can be happy with awhile. I can always just do a Nandroid and hope for the best I guess lol. Thanks for any input!

Definitely try CM10!!
You will fall in love.
I know exactly what you are saying about being hesitant because you want something that just works, without a bunch of additional issues to fix.
I always seem to find problems with other other roms that push me into looking for something else, NOT HERE!
CM10 is just so polished, It even fixes things that didn't work in any TW rom for me such as being able to send / receive MMS while connected to wifi.
It even has BLN built in and activated from the start.
I must say that CM10 + T989 = THE BEST phone experience I have EVER had with any phone.
I was getting so sick of going through so many wrongs, always to end up having to settle with some negative.
Everything just works with CM10 on our phone, and works well at that.
I finally dove in with the nightly CM10 builds about 2 months ago and now the official CM10 release.
Not a single lock up, force close, reboot, glitch or problem here in the last 2 months.
Battery life is really good, phone is smooth and fast, and most importantly it's super functional.
Everything works so much better for me than with any of the TW roms.
I love how CM10 is minimalistic and fast, yet has so many functional improvements and additions.
In my opinion it is hands down the best rom for our phone.
I think the fact that there is an entire team of developers working on CM is what makes it so good, it's not just dependent on one person like most roms.
Flash CM10... fall in love with your phone all over again!!
And after you flash CM10, flash this GAPPS http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
I haven't had any problems whatsoever.

With how easy it is to do a backup/restore of phone these days, I find it easiest just to backup what I have and dive in to a new rom because the worst case is that you have to spend 5 minutes for it to restore if you don't like the new rom. Good luck! Hope you enjoy it!

Thats a good idea. I just read in the Cyanogem Mod Stable notes that the kernel was tied into the ROM very tightly especially with project butter. Whatever that means. So maybe I will try another kernel. Do you use an app or just the system settings?

I have not had any issues with the gallery, camera, or video recorder whatsoever. In fact, I took over 200 photos and 10 videos at a concert this weekend. I haven't seen any issues with it in the CM10 thread either, so I know it's not a common CM10 problem. Are you running the stock CM10 camera, or have you tried flashing the 4.2 camera? I know the 4.2 camera has some issues, thus why it's not stock on CM10 yet. I would say, try clearing your camera / gallery cache. If that doesn't work, you may have a bad flash. Make sure you wipe data / reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache, flash the rom, flash gapps, clear cache / dalvik again, fix permissions, then boot into CM10. Never had a problem doing it this way. I'm using 2.2.2 (i think) TWRP touch recovery. As far as the outgoing call issue, I have not had that issue either. Occasionally someone can't here me when they call me, or I can't hear them, but not very often. I had this issue on stock and every rom though.I think it's just a Tmobile issue. I'd say try some different radios. UVLE1 has been good to a lot of people.

Thanks. I'm not sure what happened. I flashed UVLH1 for the infamous rom. Maybe I ought to switch back. The only special thing I have done is flash the Center clock mod. Running stock camera though.

Jellybean Rom features on this old device

I have tested out many gingerbread ROMs and recently tried MazWoz JB 4.2.1 B4. It worked well except it had camcorder/camera issues with preview, errors when ending calls, and no bluetooth. The bluetooth caused me to switch back to gingerbread. For those of you that have tested the various jellybean Roms, have you found one that runs smooth with most features working? I don't care about FFC or 4G features.
Thanks.
Try this one i use quick snap camera not as much lag i don't use blue tooth so can't commit on that i haven't had any GPS issues so no need for GPS fix also a2sd fine. There are some others i just haven't tried but reading threads sounds as if they are OK to
