[Q] What to do with DEAD pixels - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Oh my god, I just noticed that my "new" (~ a month old) desire has a bunch of dead pixels . I counted 6 spots on the display wherer there is at least one dead pixel. One is clear to see, must be more than one pixel dead there. I can clearly tell that they are dead pixels, because if i tilt the phone they change color.
I tried PixelFix App but it did not help. (btw: having SLCD screen)
If nothing helps I will have to make use of the warranty. Will they repair/chang the display?
Anyone with the same problem / a solution? Or should i just go to my providers shop?
Should I remove the screen protector first? If they think I am stupid they might tell my its my own fault, because I am using the screen protector with glue (or whatever).

Well, dead pixels don't change color... remove the screen protector first and wipe the display with a clean, soft cloth the screen, see if they still show.
The warranty should cover this fault when a certain number of dead pixels is reached.
Otherwise, a whole new screen goes for around 130-140 $.

With monitors you need 2 dead pixells so I would say the same about screens.

First of all thanks for your quick replies.

On a black screen they clearly shine bright white or cyan (can't really tell because they are so tiny). If I change the view angle it changes to some kind of red.
Do such apps like PixelFixer help at all?

If I remember correctly, the colored stuck pixels that have other color than black are called sub-pixels and are the components of a "full-fledged" pixel, so a stuck sub-pixel could be your problem. In any case, neither should change color when tilting the screen.
I never heard of a single case of "healing" a dead pixel problem using a software, although in theory they all say could do it...
Did you remove the screen protector?

Just talk to HTC or your insurance or your carrier and see what they can do. Your still in warranty so best to take the safe route.

Is this a sign that my screen will be going bad soon?

I have a Tilt 2, and just recently noticed that when the screen is off, a section of the screen has the "rainbow like warp color". Its not oil or grease, it wont wipe off so the problem must be in the screen, though it looks like its on the surface. However, I do not notice any degradation when the screen is on. Everything color wise and everything looks normal.

Should I be worried about this? Is this a sign that even though the phone is new, and its never been mis-handled, that the screen is going to have problems soon? I have insurance on the phone and not sure if I could even get it replaced at this point, or if id have to wait until the screen actually has issues when its on.

I have it too. But it doesn't interfere with my use of the device, so I don't really care...
No there all like that, I have gone through 2 and they both had more then 4 dead pixels as well. Find a dark black photo or just turn your camera on and put you finger over the lens and you will find many.

The Newton Rings are probably very prevalent. I can’t say that I agree with your statement on the dead pixels though. Sounds like you got unlucky with both devices. I’ve tested mine with 4 images for black, red, green, and blue. Every pixel works fine for me.
Its caused by the layers between the touch screen digitizer and the actual LCD screen. The soft flexible LCD materials touch and form Newton's Ring patterns that appear as the pictures show.
On my old phone (A kaiser) the original screen did not exhibit this behavior, but when I replaced the screen, the new one did...
Luck of the draw,and no it is nothing bad...
I had this problem in european tp2 model... took it for repair and they changed the screen in warranty...

My immediate response was going to be that it mut be dust as it's invisible on the close up but...
Did you use a flash for the photo?
No i didn`t. The photo was taken without flash. Now I can share original photo made of that "defective" pixels:
img707.imageshack.us/img707/4248/p1030550full.jpg (3,8MB.)
I had a spec of dust under the screen of my original Desire. Today I took delivery of my replacement Desire and this also has dust under the screen.
I'm not sure what to do next.

What kind of dead (or stuck) subpixel is this?

I have an odd pixel right in the middle of the screen. When I run Dead Pixel Detect (which you can find in the Market), it is lit in the following ways:
- on a white screen, it seems red;
- on black, it seems black;
- on blue, it seems blue;
- on red, it seems red;
- on green, it seems black;
- on yellow, it seems red;
- on cyan, it seems black;
- on magenta, it seems magenta.
Does anyone know what kind of faulty subpixel(s) this is about? Is it a dead green subpixel?
I think it's just a stuck pixel because if it was black all the time, then it would be a dead pixel. Try JScreenFix from the Marketplace and pray that fixes it:
try http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.jscreenfix.android
Well, I'm sure that it isn't a dead pixel indeed but it seems to be a dead subpixel. :-( I already tried that JScreenFix app but it hasn't made any difference so far.

Technically, I think it may not possible for an AMOLED to get a "stuck pixel" like you would get on a normal LCD screen. The fact that you are getting a red pixel on a white screen, most likely means that the G & B (as in R,G,B) are dead.
Traditional LCD screens produce different colours by passing a charge through a kind of lens that twists producing different colours as the light passes through it. A stuck pixel happens when one of these lenes gets jammed and stops twisting, which is why you can sometimes fix them by flashing loads of colours on the screen rapidly, it sort of rattles the pixel loose.
If you've got a pixel that's displaying the wrong colour then it's broken rather than stuck.
I am not sure what else you could try to fix this... is it still under warranty? Realistically, I think having it replaced is your only option.
I have exactly the same problem a 'pink' pixel on the screen which is mostly visible on light backgrounds. Did anyone try to exchange it for this reason? I bought it from t-mobile UK.
I know that in the past they would need a certain number of pixels to be faulty before they would change anything (tv-s, monitors, etc.) Is this true for this phone?
If they dont then just say it has a different problem, most operators send out the replacement and pick up the 'faulty' one at the same time.

Thanks for the explanation!
Well, I bought it 5 weeks ago so it should be under warranty although it is rooted. I can hardly see the dead subpixel (even though it is in the middle) so I'm not really concerned but I might consider contacting HTC customer service anyway.

No problem bud, although, if i were in your shoes, then i would unroot it and send it back for replacemet while still under warranty. Afterall, you paid for a product that should not have any defects, and something like a dead pixel to the screen would annoy the hell out of me

Yep, I'll probably do so. The only thing is ... my Desire was Vodafone UK branded, and I unbranded it when rooting. However, there is no full RUU available for Vodafone UK handsets. However, in my opinion, HTC should not care about that since it's a hardware defect ... but no one seems to know their opinion about it.

Dead Pixel(s)?

I have what seems to be a dead pixel that constantly seems to change color (when displaying darker colors it becomes visible) on the middle left side of the screen. I also seem to have one that flashes bright only once on top of the screen (not always, just when screen refreshes seem to occur).
Anyone else there having such problems with their X One? Sounds to be like a hardware problem..

a lot are experiencing the same mate, we don't know if its hardware or software no words from HTC so far
awaiting updates
Just found another (dead?) pixel. This one sits on the left side of the screen, and is only visible on grey or lighter backgrounds (not on black backgrounds). It is lighter than the rest when displaying a bight color, and sometimes flickery turns blue when swiping over colors on-screen.
Not all that disturbing, but I certainly don't like the idea of having a brand new phone with one (and potentially) two dead pixels on arrival.

Mine had 3 before I sent it back. Mine were dead, so stuck black.
Mine had a sticky pixel (the ones that can be seen over black background). It was visible only on very dark light conditions and over black background.
I wanted to go to the shop for replacement, but on that morning the pixel reactivated alone.
There are some apps on the play store that try to reactivate sticky pixel by changing the color of the screen very fast.
I doubt their effectivness, but they are worth a try.
I want to check One X for dead pixels in stock before I buy it.
How can I do LCD test at One X?
I try *#*#4636#*#* but I cant find LCD test here, so which code works for LCD test?

It is normally at the code you said, but seems to be missing on this handset. Use an Android app...there are quite a few.
But in stock Im unable to install any .app on it.
Any solutions how to check the display in stock?

Unless you have a very sensitive eye, I don't think you would be able to see a single dead pixel at the shop. The pixel density is so high that a single pixel is very very small. You need to watch very carefully to spot them.
Anyway, the best way to spot my sticky pixel was to take a picture covering the lens. You get a totally black picture, which you can view full screen and hunt for white/yellow/green/red pixels.
If the seller is veeeery patient you might be able to do that at the shop.
Maybe the same works for dead pixels, by taking a picture at a white wall.
What do the LCD experts think of this?
Anyway, all the apps on the play store for detecting dead/sticky pixel present the 3dots menu button. So they fail in detecting dead/sticky pixel in the bottom part of the screen.
Mine had a dead pixel along the top just right of the middle, I could only see it on dark colours. Took it back to o2 got a replacement there and then.

Attached a pic of the pixels I'm referring to. They are indeed 'stuck' pixels, not dead pixels. The one in the top only shows periodically. The other two are there constantly.
Also noticed the screen flickers on some apps. Now that I do find very annoying.
Requested a DOA return.
Mine was made in Taiwan.
i've been using the phone for a 3 days now, and i still have problem wit few pixels with exactly problem that is described in the first post. ota 1.28. did not help. did the pixel fix apps help, and if it did, how long have was the app active until the problem was resolved?

I am skeptical that running those apps will actually fix things. That was also why I returned that phone to be replaced. Got my new one today, and it has no dead pixels. It does however have a very vague yellow bar on the top of the screen. Almost not to be seen, only when the screen displays only white.
If it really is a problem, I'd contact my retailer and get it replaced.

[Q] Need help for seperating the frong glass from the screen

Hello everyone,
I have a Note 2 which has witnessed frong glass changes twice and whole screen change once (thank you, sister). The problem is, the last time I needed the whole screen replacement, I bought it 2nd hand from a guy who was either using dead phones' working screens or the ones he fixed.
Apperiantly my new screen is coming among those have been fixed. Because the screen is not correctly aligned to the outer glass. As it's a white phone I can easily see black frames (which are the areas of screen but no pixels there) are not equal when the screen is on. One more thing; my front camera is blurry and the notification LED is glowing a "half-circle". Other than that no problems there.
So my intention is; I want to seperate them and clean the adhesive completely so the camera and LED will be clean and I will be able to re-allign the glass to the screen.
My questions are;
1) How can I clean the whole adhessive without harming the screen
2) What can I re-attach the screen with? I think that Optic Clear Adhesives need Otoglav Machines and they are probably more expensive than a brand new Note 2 I am open to any suggestions about this material..
Thanks
No one?
