I use CoPilot too and I think it's good but I wish there were something even better as a offline GPS software.
i'm using NDrive and sygic, both are fully offline navigation softwares.
maps and POIs are good

download GPS Status from the market and then RESET A-GPS data through it
this might help you in getting a location faster and more accurately.
hope this helps
-download and install from market gpsfix
-turn on gps and internet connection
-turn on gpsfix and wait for fix (6 seconds!)
-close gpsfix and web and open navigation software!
done!
i tried many soft but for me best are:
-igo my way for android
-sygic aura
-ndrive 3d
A great app (root needed) FasterFix(somewhere to find on this forum)
you can set your default settings to your region for a faster fix of your gps.
Faster fix does nothing on my ndrive.

Can I get Google Navigation on my HTC Desire?
Yes you can! And it does not involve any hacking or rooting. All you need to do is install Brut's Google Maps MOD next to your existing Google Maps app and you're all set.
You might also find Nav Launcher useful with this MOD.

There are problems (not Desire related) that are listed on the original topic. But overall it's usable.
this installed fine and is working getting searching for gps signal but im sat in my lounge will test later
erm. navigation works for me already without this. click and hold on the place that you want to go and select get directions from current location.... takes you there. . . . .
What exactly is the point of this mod?

This is voice guided turn by turn, presumably.
Unless you mean yours does this already?
i havent tried it but dont think its turn by turn. just tested the navigation bit.
Unless you're in the US, it's not turn by turn.
I have tried google navigation and it doesn't work. It always says destination not accessible.
go to the market download nav launcher then select the brut maps and install viola

I'm pretty sure it should work on Desire if anyone shared APK from their Nexus One. Try searching N1 forums for it.
My desire got an update for google maps yesterday. In the list of new additions that came with the update was "Navigation(beta)". I havent been able to get it to work though
has anyone got voice to work?

Yeah, is the file available anywhere else please? I'm curious to try it.
Used it for the 1st time yesterday to get from Nottingham to Bedford and it worked great. The satellite map overlay is rather interesting to use and the traffic updates on the map its a great function.
I was using it through my bluetooth car kit and had the music playing on my desire so the voice directions didnt work but i loved it (The voice when it does work is crap though lol).
I dl Nav Launcher from the market place, when I ran it it asked if I wanted to use brut maps, i said yes and it dl it.
Followed the instructions in "treble4's" post and works a charm.
THANKS
Anyone know It's possible to get speed camera alerts while using the navigation app?
I have this strange tenancy to drive slightly above the speed limit and from using it in the past, I'm sure it.doesn't warn you about speed cameras. I know I should just keep alert, but there are times when you lose concentration.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
a) Not available in the navigation app, try a different gps application.
b) If you're prone to losing concentration, please don't speed.

I use a combination of two applications.
GPS Software - Copilot 8 Live (Works very well, very nice software)
Speed Cameras - Trapster - Again works well and is free from the market.
Trapster runs in the background, too.

Didn't mean it like that. I meant concentration as in looking for speed cameras.
Also when I say speed, it'd only be a few mph, nothing excessive. I like to go at least 5mph under the speed limit when going through a camera (i don't trust them)

Copilot may not be free, but it is very cheap for what it is and a far superior navigation solution than Google Navigation (which is still pretty good for free!).

Agreed - the software is worth every penny.
I hate Google Nav - don't like it one bit.
Copilot Live V8 is fantastic. I have downloaded every map that they have currently available and my Copilot folder is slightly larger than 4Gb in size. It has hung on loading just once and I had to reboot the phone then it was ok. Had installed vlingo just before that and wondered if too many apps were running.
It is more accurate than my Garmin 765t but of course lacks a lot of the refinements of a dedicated satnav device. It is certainly accurate to within <10m and I would say around 3 m.
It does not have speed and red light cameras which my garmin has.
I find some of the countries maps have no POI available and only limited categories in others. Not sure how many Favorites you can store for each country.
I have tested it against the Garmin and routing is nearly always the same.
I recommend this app to anyone and it is worth the money if you pay for it.

Mine does (UK).
Ha ha ha, why would you download every map there is for it?
Just use the map for your country and you will see it even starts up quicker after that. My Copilot folder size is <- 200mb or so.

Is there a GPS app that has downloadable maps so you can use the GPS without a data plan?
I tried IGOMYWAY but it doesn't work for some reason.
EDIT:
CoPilot V8 works wonderfully. Problem solved! I highly recommend Copilot. Gives a nice 3D view, has a tolerable fembot voice for directions, has POI's, and doesn't disconnect from GPS signals.
It'd make sense for there to be someway, but I have no idea if there is. HTC Sense advertises that you can do it with their software, however I never figured out how that exactly worked for the 2-3 weeks that I used a Sense-based ROM.
Sounds like you're talking about a navigation app. A GPS app can be just about anything, like GPS Status & Toolbox, geocaching, jogging loggers, etc.
Navigon and CoPilot are a couple. Some on here have said CoPilot is pretty good (although I haven't tried myself), and its reasonably priced at $5 for the USA maps.
Yes. I basically want a Garmin or a TomTom equivalent on my G2. Since Garmin and TomTom don't need a data plan to work, I don't see why there shouldn't be an app that does the same.
IGO Navigator works on my Bell Desire Z.
Back in the g1 days I used copilot. Its really good. I would recommend it

wasn't there a modification for maps made by someone where the map cache is saved onto the SD card?
i think it was brute or something like that
Alright. So I got CoPilot and it doesn't work. I have the maps and everything. It is just that the program can't detect satellites. That is the same problem I had for IGO navigator.
BUT from another post, a person (I think it was redpoint) told me to download GPS status, and if that program can detect satellites then your GPS should work.
Well, I did what he said, and it did indeed detect satellites, and even detected
Then how come IGO AND Copilot doesn't work for me?
I am actually prepared to go out and buy a Garmin 265T
yea
i'm gonna follow this thread cause i'm in the same boat. it's ridiculous that you could be out in a clear open area that just gets no cell service and yet you can't get gps service. do i really need to go buy a freaking gps when my phone should be able to handle it?
Polarbear:
Try Igo navigator and CoPilot. They work without data. They work for other people. They don't work for me though. They might work for you.
I began too many sentences with "they".

How long does it take all y'all to lock on to GPS signal using your various navigation apps?
I know you can save maps with Locus Free (in the market.) It gives you a choice of a bunch of maps. I'm not sure if you its exactly what you are looking for but its worth a shot.

I have problem with Quick Lookup app on my HTC Desire HD. When I tap and select word in browser and select Quick Lookup, app opens for an instace and then close and open browser tab with google search so I'm unable to search wiki, youtube, translate tabs in Quick Lookup app.

Exactly, problem appearing on Google search and Wikipedia, in my case. Once I managed to fix problem with restarting phone and clearing data of Quick Lookup. Now it's not working. I can't figure out is problem causing some installed app or something else. Very disappointing because I really use to this app.
Did anyone try to do something else to fix this problem?

Copilot is also OK
Interesting feedback. I tried out Google Maps and, unless I am using it wrong, found it heavily dependant on having a good data signal in order to calculate a route. I want something that I can download and use offline as data signal is patchy where I am.
I used Co-Pilot a few years ago and it was ok but had a few instances where it simply failed to find a location.
Surprised Tomtom has not got it together for Android.

Well yes Google needs data to work. Is not a offline navigation tool. In that case just buy a navigation system or upgrade Ur data plan. U r better off buying a offline navigation then using one on Ur phone. Because downloading the maps can cost a lot of memory and most of the time real navigation system that is offline are better then offline smartphone once. As for online once Google maps is great and free.

I use Sygic as drive on the continent a lot.
Got it on offer a couple of years ago (about £25 for UK & Europe) so it was a bit of a bargain and used it many many times.
I also use google navigation while at home sometimes as it's just easier to google search then plot a route to somewhere.

You can load up the map and the route, and save it offline. It will then work without any data connection (and supposedly can make adjustments within reason without connection, but I have never tried this and heard it is only being tested).
