Im really sorry in advance if this has been posted already, but i have the unofficial froyo 2.2 update because i wanted to use oovoo and skype on my epic and this was the easiest choice, being so i had the BlackBerry Storm 2 for awhile and have no experience with android. Okay so heres my question which i couldnt find, how do i go from DK28 to this bonsai rom that looks promising, i like the froyo update in the beginning but got really tired of the wifi bs and notification bs and not to mention the sms log in your recent call logs? annoying.
For the record i did not use odin to get 2.2 on my epic i used the flash way which i found on this forum, i dont remember where, it was a month ago.
Please help, id really like to enjoy my epic more.
Ive read alot of different posts. and even in the bonsai post there isnt anything that tells me how to root my phone. Cause im convinced i need to root my phone to install this. can anyone help?

One Click Root
That should work to root your device. The instruction are detailed and if you dont know something i suggest reading through it...To flash bonsai you need to have ext 4 so you might want to root with this:
Clockwork 3
This will convert your system to ext4 but will also wipe all your settings and phone clean..many people have had problems with flashing from stock so i suggest flashing bonsai 1.1.4 and install all the apps and setting you want.
Leave it just how u want and without wiping anything (dalvik, cache, etc) go back to recovery (power down phone, 3 finger salute) and flash 2.0.1. The great thing about the new bonsai is that it Backsup all your apps and settings for you
so when the process is done your phone will look exactly the same (which is why i said to flash 1.1.4 first. It will make your life ALOT easier) Currently it will not carry over your theme and i suggest not installing one until themers fix the
framework.apk to work with the newest release. hope this helps and if anything you can ask on the bonsai thread and there are guys there that can help out.
Edit: Forgot to mention that you will need bonsai 1.1.4 on your sd when you root because you need to flash this after the root with clockwork 3. (i think it says flash kernel after. Skip that because it already includes the kernel needed)
so where do i put the clockwork3?
i figured that part out, sorry. i just need to figure out the rest on how to install the damn bonsai rom.
Well once you have ran the one click file that he gave you then put the bonsai rom on your on the root of of your SD card. Boot into recovery. Select install zip from SD card, choose zip from SD card and find the bonsai rom on the SD card. That's it. It will flash and then select reboot if it doesn't for it for you.

Okay, first timer here and I have a few questions. I just completed rooting my phone via Simple Root. My build number is now 1.17.651.1.
My questions are as follows:
1) Now that I am rooted, what installation files can I delete from my SD Card?
2) I see that I need to do a recovery flash, do I do this immediately? What one do you recommend?
3) After I do the flash, are there any others files I need to install before I do a custom rom?
4) Which custom rom do you recommend?
5) Am I leaving anything else out that I forgot?
Thank you so much in advance!

After you have rooted you can delete nearly anything you want, I wouldn't suggest doing it because I doubt you know what to do. But you do have the freedom to..
I would suggest you flash a recovery as soon as possible. It makes life easier. The two most common recovery are Amon Ra And clockwork.. I use amon Ra just because it had a better wipe feature but clockwork is used in rom manAger (look in to it).
After rooting you can look into upgrading your radio and your wimax and your kernal.
Custom roms are like sneakers, They all have different purpose and size. The most common ones are damagedcontrol and fresh. Do your research and experiment and find your sneaker. You can also just wait til the official stable cm6 comes out. For now I use fresh.
Try oUt some themes and different apps that are for rooted devices only. And there us always something neiw to do with your evo.

I am in the same boat as OP. I managed to make my way through SimpleRoot. But I am having a heck of a time digging through the forums to figure out what to do next. I feel like kind of an idiot, but I have no idea how to set up my backup/recovery "amon ra" right? And then I'd like to install the rooted 1.47 build and update my radio and wimax. Any direction would be VERY appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. Mind pointing me in the right direction for the radio kernel and wimax?
I'm new to this too. Read up a lot first. Easy root looks to make it pretty easy, but I learned more doing it the hard way. Used the two part method in dev section, by toast I think, with adb, nand unlock and all. Helps to understand the odd file structure, and what different parts do. You have to try things too, and just hope you don't f up. Using cm6 now and its pretty cool. Have fun man.

What's wrong with Clockwork's wipe feature?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734564&highlight=clockwork
Also, as for flashing a recovery, if you install ROM Manager from the market, it will give you an option to flash either Clockwork or Amon RA. It will stay there even if you flash new ROMs later, though there's a quirk where a new ROM Manager install will ask you to flash recovery, but then if one is already there it won't really change it, it just needs to see it to believe it.
Installing new files won't make a difference if you switch ROMs. It wipes your data when you re-flash, so you'll lose it all anyway (unless you back up your apps with Titanium Backup or MyBackup). All you need is a recovery installed - and I actually recommend Clockwork, but only because I use it myself and I have no problems with it - and you can reboot into it, install a new ROM, and start playing. I've never flashed from ROM Manager, even though it gives the option, but I imagine it does the same thing, but runs it automatically after a recovery reboot.
Read the "favorite ROM" thread with the poll attached, lots of good ROM recommendations in there. I'll say it once more: I'm using Fresh 1.0.1 and netarchy's 3.7.3c kernel (Fresh-compatible version). It's so fast and smooth.
If you like your current setup but want to try a new ROM, use ROM Manager (or Clockwork as a recovery reboot) to do a Clockwork backup. That way you can return to your current state if you want to. It's basically a system image that you can restore.
Here's one helpful page to start with.
And have fun.
Back on fresh 0.5.3, clockwork was not doing a great job with the wipe, causing the boot to loop. I believe it wasn't completely wiping the dalik cache.

Here you go
This should be in the q&a section not the android development.
Not 100% sure but took a quick look and seems its based on CM6? so I assume you need the ENG Bootloader with extended commands, a recovery (either Clockwork or Amon_RA - you can download ROM Manager from market and that will install Clockwork - but there is also an option to install Amon_RA at the bottom), download the necessary zip files (ROM, radio/wimax updates, themes, whatever), put those on the sdcard and use the recovery to flash the new ROM. You will prob have to wipe data/cache/dalvik cache before you flash. I do not use this ROM so I don't know the specifics of it, I would suggest you to look at the post for any instructions and/or issues other users have come across and also post in that thread if you have any questions about it.

I have an HTC EVO with software Hardware version 003, 3.29.651.5, S-OFF and HBOOT-0.97.0000. I have tried both update files I could find for 3.70.651.1:
OTA_supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.30.651.3_releasekobxwrvtv9q86pp0.zip
OTA_Supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.29.651.5_releasezq9ss6wyobuo26b5.zip
Neither works as both give errors upon applying update.zip in the recovery menu. "Error 7" and "sd install error" appear with tons of other odd text which don't really form many words. What is really odd is last time my phone was rooted and the update was released I simply did the method above like normal and everything went great. Then once it was done i re-rooted! Not this time though...
I have also tried directly downloading the update to my phone via htc update and installing but I get started and it quickly goes to a frozen yellow triangle icon which then I must pull the battery. My dilemma?
I wanted to try using the file my phone downloads from htc directly but i am unable to find the file on my phone? I have searched with astro file explorer and tried every search strong possible. I searched the SD and then tried to search the main phone memory. The phone says it stores it somewhere in the memory but doesn't say where? Does anyone know where it does? I wanted to try this and see if it will update.
I am basically looking to update and I could care less about root as I can redo it after the update. The big issue is that I want my phone to stay the way it is with no deletion of ANY DATA such as messages, apps, etc... I simply want to update and re-root like I did last time and I can't figure out why it won't let me? I don't want to have to flash a new stock ROM and lose everything or have to use a backup program to do what i did so easily last time.
The new version of unrevoked 3.3 is out so I want to update and be done. Perhaps the root is causing it and can I un-root and then re-root after the update? I hate that HTC released multiple versions of the same phone as updates become extremely tricky now and dangerous. Than You for any help you can provide.
Regards,
FifthE1ement
if you are rooted then you should be using a rooted 3.70.651.1 rom to update. DO NOT do OTAs
I've seen took many people posting threads recently about trying to do the 3.70 ota and thinking they will just reroot after, they all have problems, my suggestion is to grab the radio/pri/nv/wimax update combo and flash it, then flash sprint lovers 3.70 after wiping cache and dalvik. you will still have root and all your apps with the newest software
make a backup in Ra beforehand just in case
Thanks for the quick reply's but I simply want to update like normal. If I can't get root then I can't get root but at least get me to update without overwriting my whole phone and having to make backups of EVERYTHING! Thanks...

I don't like flashing ROMs either. This will let you update.
Do a little more digging and you will find the answers. I admit it took me a little bit to find this l when I updated.
I don't understand why my phone just won't update? I don't really want to flash but thanks for the info. Does anyone know where the EVO stores the updates it downloads? If anyone could please provide me with more info that would be great.
The reason it won't update is because you have a custom recovery. You need to flash the stock recovery to allow you to update.
If you follow the link above it will let you do what you want keeping all your data and upgrading like normal. Just need to flash the stock recovery back. This is as long as you did unrevoked forever.
The downloaded updates are stored in the phones file system under /cache. You need to be able to mount your file system as rw to be able to access. If you don't know how to do that you can find both of the OTA updates on the web and download them. Have to have the correct one for the version you are currently on. The Evo's were at two different revs for this last update.
Even if you find the OTA update and try to apply it from your custom recovery it will not work.
Dig a little more and if you cannot find them I will find the links again, didn't save 'em.
Very good post and I am wondering the same thing. I haven't tried the stock recovery image thing yet but might soon. It was very easy to install the OTA update last time and then just reinstall the recovery image and superuser app. I bet it is not working because they changed the hboot in this version. I too haven't updated yet since I don't like losing my data and potentially missing something. I will probably just say screw it in a couple of weeks once I get time though and just flash the rooted version of the update.

Just flash a rooted copy of the stock ROM and only wipe the cache and dalvik. If you leave your data intact it will save all your settings.
I've been updating this way since I rooted about a month after the phone came out.

1. Download a Rooted 3.70 Stock Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251)
2. Copy Downloaded rom to your SDCard
3. Reboot to Recovery
4. Wipe Cache
5. Wipe Dalvik-Cache
6. Flash the Zip you copied to your SDCard
7. Reboot
8. Done
Do Not Wipe Data, or you will lose what you are trying to keep.
I'm just curious. The 3.70.651.1 update you were trying to use. Where did you try to DL it from. I think you were using the wrong file.
If you are rooted you should have tried to use these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
For some reason teshx set that ROM up to wipe data.. you'll have to open the zip and change it.
look in it for meta-inf\com\google\android\update-script file and open that, at the top you will see it say "format DATA:". Just delete that, save, zip and flash.
Why that is set up like that I have no idea
sekigah84 I got it from Sprint via my phone. So it had to be right.
Khilbron & xHausx thanks for the info I'm going to take my nandroid backup and give this a try! I'll post back my info! Also will this update my radios, and other pertinent system files?
damn man you really like your phone stock, and i guess you dont have time to read all 9 stickys helping root people, so we'll just need to fill you in
the bottom line: flash a custom rom and you will never want to go back. NEVER OTA WITH ROOT OR YOU COULD GET SCREWED BADLY. even a stock-ish custom rom like mikfroyo is better than stock. titanium backup will backup all apk's and data. or you can just not wipe data.
flash myns.
just do it
you wont regret it
or just stick with stock.

From there I decided that Universal Auto Root was the best choice for me. Is this correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
I am currently downloading the RUU and AutoRoot v2.0 as suggested by the instructions on the thread above. The part that is tripping me up is what to do about a ROM. From what I can tell the AutoRoot puts on the Sprint Lovers ROM. I have a fair amount of experience with ADW and LP so I'm not set on using the Sense UI. However if I do use Sense I think I would like to use this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883026 It seems to be Sense minus the bull****. I don't know how to use AutoRoot with a different ROM. If anyone could help me there that would be amazing!
Also, if anyone recommends rooting a different way or using a different ROM please let me know or if someone can link me to go instructions about flashing ROMs etc.
Thank you and I apologize for asking something that has probably already been asked. I am just trying to get the most updated responses to ensure this goes well.

Don't put unrevoke on your sd card. You have to do it on your PC. PLEASE MAKE A NANDROID!!! I CAN STRESS THAT ENOUGH!!! As far as Rom's try Myn's, is the best Rom right now.

If you have S-OFF you are rooted, now you just need to decide if you want to use a custom ROM or keep the stock one.
i'm not sure you absolutely get rooting. once you are rooted, you can SWITCH roms easily and safely. but, in order to do this, you need to install a custom recovery and a rooted rom. in the earlier days, devs would compile rooted roms from scratch, but sprint lovers is just a rooted rom with minor improvements. just root and then change roms.
Alright I rooted it successfully, flashed a ROM successfully, and then tried it out. Now I would like to try another one. I put the new ROM on the SDCard and now I am wondering what I have to wipe in clockwork recovery. I went into recovery and I have wiped cache partition, wiped data/factory reset, and wiped dalvik cache. Now do I just go ahead and "install zip from sdcard"?
Yes, going from ROM to ROM wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik and flash as normal. Should be good.
Always make backups. I advise you to change your Recovery to Amon Ra's. This will allow you to make backups of your "RSA Keys." This is important for 4G / WiMax.
Once you've changed recoveries, should you even choose to (don't HAVE to), make a backup with that one. Backups from Clockwork will not work with Amon's recovery, from what I've heard. Maybe there is a way from last I heard, but not sure. So when that's done, you can put those clockwork backups on your computer or delete them. Only after making sure you're sitting fine.
Either way, establish backups (I have a stock rooted backup, confirmed working CURRENT ROM as well as taking one before doing something drastic. JIC ) and then start flashing. Try to enjoy yourself.
edit: toss those backups somewhere safe IE computer / ext hdd etc

4g works with all ota-based roms (minus the serious exeptions of course). rsa keys are the acutal keys that say "this phone is authorized to use the sprint 4g network". they are matched with hardware, so if you lose them, you cant ever get them back. even sprint cant. the easiest way to prevent this is to not use clockworkmod (i think its safe now) and to back up your keys. niether of these are very hard.
Ok thanks so I just use unrevoked to root the phone and then do a first time nandroid backup and I should be good to go? Then I can do S-off if I want?
Also how hard right now is it to put the phone back to stock if something strange should happen? Want to make sure I get to use my 7 buck a month insurance if I have something go wrong with the phone.
Hello and sorry for the inconvenience. I'm new to rooting and updating my evo. I have 2.2 android version since i rooted my evo and i rooted it with unrevoked 3. Now i keep getting updates from my phone but cant install them because im rooted. I was wondering how can i update my evo to the latest android version which is 2. something and how can i also update the latest fota version that's 3.70.
I don't know if i need to install a new ROM or get the update online. Your help would be grateful and thanks in advance.
You have to flash updated roms to keep your phone updated...thats the only way AFAIK
Any custom rom will get rid of the update notifications, and all are based on the newest OTA by now. I think the only 2.3 gingerbread rom is the CM7 nightly, which is very stable and very nice
Before you flash a new rom you will want to make sure you have one of the custom recoveries, RA for example is what i use for my flashing.
What Radio and software are you running?
software 2.2 and what do you mean by radio, basebad or kernel
Have you checked your phone to be sure you have S- off? There is a Rom in the developers section that has the latest OTA 3.70... but I do concur with the guys above in that you need to flash a custom Rom.
Go to the market and download Rom Manager. By using unrevoked I believe you now have clockworkmod as your custom recovery. And I'm pretty sure it would b version 2.6.0.1 which is the good one. By using Rom Manager you can flash a custom Rom directly through the app. My favorite is by far Cyanogen 6.1.2. The only downside is 4g isn't currently working. But the upsides by far outway that issue.

thanks and as we speak im doing a nandroid back up and want to know out of
myn's and calk's
which one is the best and if both of them work with 4g and i wanted to know if i do a nandroid backup will all my apps and contacts be deleted?
Both are good ROMs but every time I go try out a new ROM, I always go back to Calk's. I like it best but that's just my personal opinion. Once you feel comfortable flashing try them all out. I would reccomend using titanium back up to back up all of your apps though so when you flas a new ROM you can easily recover all your apps.
thanks and will it erase all my contact when i flash a new rom?? cause i already did an nandroid backup. and i want to download calks. SO whats my next step here. does calk work with 4g since i have htc evo 4g. sorry because im an amateur and dont know that much about this
Yes your contacts will be erased but once you log back in with your google acct they will resync. Yes, Calk's Rom supports 4G.
Download Calk's format all (not necessary but just something I personally use) & install it to root of the SD card

Same with the ROM, DL it to SD card root
reboot into recovery (vol down & power)
Factory wipe
Wipe Dalvik
Install zip from SD Card
Calk's format all
EViO v1.8
After it's done installing the phone will appear to hang a the splash screen This is normal for a first boot after a flash just let it do it's thing. It will eventually come up, I promise.
Enjoy your new ROM

by logging into gmail on your computer and checking "contacts". based on your questions, perhaps you should wait and research more before you dive into something that you can't get out of. you've been warned, just sayin. good luck though
