[Q] G2 Partition 7 N00b question - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Apologies in advance if this is a silly question, but I can't seem to find the answer by searching.
Question: is there a "how to" for backup your partition 7?
In the wiki I see
"Setting S-ON and CID and restoring the simlock can be done using gfree to restore the backup of you partition 7. "
Under the "So what if I need to change it all back to stock for warranty purposes or something else?" Section
I would like to ROOT my G2, but I would also like to be able to restore back to stock just in case I need to send in for warranty etc etc.
Any direction on this would be awesome.
Best Regards,

Isn't that the partition that's automatically backed up when you use gfree? It's a backup of the stock hboot partition or something like that if I remember right. Look on the root of your sdcard and you'll see the backup. It's called part7backup-########.bin
# = a bunch of numbers which I think correlate to the date/time the backup was made.

Thanks! This is the kind of info I was looking for. I didn't know gfree created a backup.

ya you should make a backup of that backup on your computer lol just to be safe

Yes, definitely make a backup of that file. I have four lol. One on my computer, dropbox, google documents, and my sdcard
Better safe than sorry. Also, make a backup of your stock rom as soon as you finish rooting and getting s-off. That way you can go back to the stock rom if you ever want to (it will still be rooted and s-off). Sometimes we all get fits of nostalgia and want to 'old' stuff.

Yes, Planning on this as well. The ROOTing happens this weekend.
What method do you use for backing up your ROM files?

Clockworkmod recovery > backup

Thanks to everyone! You guys are awesome!

OK guys (and gals) I'm a noob and totally confused myself trying to read 1000s of pages here in the forum. I'm currently running OTA 3.26.651.6 and understand there's a 3.29.****.5 OTA now available. I tried TheBiles idiot proof guide but the link in step 30 is broke. Most of the guides out there seem to be out of date. So I'm looking for some advice from the PROS on which to use and how to use. Remember im a noob so keep it simple. Also is there a glossory about all this like:
What is;(and what do they benefit)
ClokWorkMod
NAND
Rom Manager
ect.

unrevoked 3.21
You run it on your computer, plug in your phone, and follow the directions. You get full root and ClockworkMod recovery installed on your phone, as well as unrevoked forever. It's super easy.
Pros:
It's super easy
It gives you full root
It gives you root forever (unrevoked forever)
Takes care of everything (root, custom recovery, "S-OFF" AKA unrevoked forever)
Thoroughly tested
Cross-platform support
You can actually set any custom recovery image you want through the menu
Cons:
You need a computer
sturmen - thanks for the quick reply. Also should i update to OTA 3.29*** before or after (or never) i use this method?
Don't update through Sprint (ever). That's not how we roll around here. You're gonna want to root your phone as it is, then flash a custom ROM. You can tell which ones are based on the latest OTA on that wiki page; flashing one essentially "updates" you to that version. Personally, I recommend Fresh Evo 3.3.0.1 if you like Sense, or CyanogenMod v6.0.0 if you don't.
The biles guide was made a while ago, so it makes sense it is out of date. The best next one, that works, would be regaws method. There is even a mac guide using his method if you have a mac.
Will the current unrevoked3 work with build number 3.29.651.5?
OK I ran the unrEVOked3 and it said "done". Do i still need to run unrEVOked forever?

I've been wondering this as well. I ran the newest unrevoked3 and it gave me full NAND unlock and S-off but I'm not sure if it is permanent and if I should run forever as well.... would appreciate some input on this!

Straight from Unrevoked 3.21 RootWiki: here
Does this permanently unlock the NAND flash on my phone?
Yes. The default configuration of this tool disables the phone's security, which also disables the NAND locks placed on the storage by the bootloader. If you choose not to disable security, the /system partition will be read-only after the tool completes.
Using Old Backup's with this?
Here is my question on this. I just recieved my new phone today and I am planning on using this method to root my phone. Before I gave up my old phone I did a Nand backup which has all of my programs my "fresh rom" and ect. on it. Now on the old phone I used the Toast method and nand unlock to root my phone. Will I be able to just do a normal nand restore after I use the unrevoked3 to unlock my new phone? Or do I have to start all over? I checked on the sd card in the Nandroid backup is there. Thank you in advance

I read that the other day, but I kept reading posts stating to run unrevoked forever after unrevoked3 to make it permanent. Was a little confused... I guess unrevoked 3.21 includes unrevoked forever, lots of contradicting posts though.
one thing about that wiki that confuses me is when it talks about .ZIP ROMS, once i use unrevoked can I use Fresh's .ZIP?

Unrevoked 3 was pre-Unrevoked 3.21. That did not do Nand unlock and S-Off and required you to flash Unrevoked Forever to get Nand unlock and S-Off.

.zip ROMs are flashed via recovery. unrevoked should give you CWM recovery, and therefore you should be able to flash ROMs (including Fresh). Make sure you back up, and also wipe data, cache, and dalvik-cache before flashing. If you need help with that, here's a step-by-step:
Have full root with NAND unlock, by unrevoked 3.21 (recommended) or otherwise
Download the ROM you want in .zip format (Go for Fresh!)
Put the .zip into the root of your microSD card
Install Quick Boot from the Market
Use Quick Boot to enter recovery
Go to nandroid, then make a backup
Go to wipe, and wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik-cache
Select "Flash zip from SD card"
Select the one you downloaded
Let it run
Reboot your phone
Congratulations! You are now part of the cool kids club!
Alternately, purchase ROM Manager Premium which allows you to download, backup, wipe and flash all in one step from within Android and without interacting with recovery. $4.99 and totally worth it.

OK, but what about those of us that don't want a custom ROM? Is there any reliable way of getting from root 3.26 to root 3.29 without a data wipe?
As far as I can tell my best reliable option is:
1) Use Titanium Backup to backup all my apps/settings
2) Use unrevoked3 and the stock 3.29 ROM here to upgrade to 3.29 and regain root
3) Reinstall Titanium and restore my apps/settings
Is this correct, or is there an easier way?

S-off is unrevoked forever. So if it shows S-off in the boot loader then your good, u don't need to do anything else.

On another Evo which I've helped root, I just downloaded the new 3.29 rooted stock ROM, wiped cache/davlik cache, flash new ROM, reboot, then go back and flash the new radio/PRI stuff and it works without having to wipe phone data.

It is my understanding that as long as you have the same Recovery flashed (Clockwork or Amon RA) as you did on your old phone you should be able to copy the backups to your SD card (maintaining the same directory structure as they were before) and restore them without issue.

Restore my DHD to Stock

Currently I have a rooted DHD, with RADIO S OFF, and running a gingerbread build.
I am curious as to how I would go back to fully stock? Like how I bought it with no traces of any messing around with it.
Nothing happened to my phone and I love my rooted device, just wondering in case I want to sell it or if I need to bring it in for physical damages.
Thanks!

Do you know where i can get this from?
Although if you want to get back to 100% stock you will also need to reverse radio s-off. You do have your partition 7 backup safe I hope.

How do you restore the partition 7 backup?

With Clockwork recovery 3.x, although slightly flaky at the moment so you first need to reflash your gingerbread rom, then boot into recovery, go to backup / restore and use advanced option to restore /data
So just to make this clear.
1. Flash RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.72.405.3_R_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_ 26.04.02.17_M2_release_161342_signed
2. Boot into recovery and restore the partition 7 backup?
3. Everything back to normal?
What about S-OFF and Radio S-OFF?

Flashing the RUU will deal with S-OFF as it will replace the bootloader, radio S-OFF you would need to revert yourself, the RUU will also replace the recovery partition with stock so simplest thing would be to backup apps and data with Titanium (also backup sms with sms backup or similar) flash RUU then boot into ROM set up all the google stuff then install Titanium again and restore apps and data, you will not be able to restore system data without introducing some instability in the system though.
I believe dr.mox was suggesting you backup the cm7 partition should you wish to come back to gingerbread.
No I mean if you want to go back to 100% stock including removing radio s-off, you will need the partition 7 backup which the easy radio off tool generates. The easy tool also removes s-off but you need the backup.

My SD card managed to go BOOM before i got to copy a backup of my P7 files,
will this make it impossible for me to get back to radio s-on if i would choose to?
Maybe this could help you get Radio S-on

its an RUU, after that i will use visionary to temp root and then set radio to s-on with that tool i linked above. After all that i will hardreset and keep the micro sd card. Will they know that i rooted/s-off my phone? Anything else i should look into doing?

Complete backup and restore process

I want to mess about with roms and ruus a bit this afternoon but want to be able to restore back to the phones current state afterwards.
Phone is Rooted, S-off, Amon-ra, Oxygen 2.1.2 using ext3
I have a spare SD card so I can pull the one that is in there at the moment to preserve its contents and use a second for testing.
I'm intending to flash a RUU to go back to stock unrooted s-on - mostly out of curiosity.
What backups will i need to ensure that at the end of my testing I can restore to oxygen with my currently installed setup, apps and data intact.
I also assume I'll need to re-root and s-off.
If u make a backup n then flash a ruu u will need to root ur device n s off again else ur backup will not work hope this helps
But u can just make a Android backup in recovery

Yea, take a NANDroid back up before this whole process. Once you flash the RUU you will lose root and s-off. You'll need to re-root and s-off (if you want that) then you can just flash the backup from recovery. Though make sure you're restoring the backup with the same Recovery version that you created it with.

[Q] Backup before Rooting

Hi
I have an unbranded (unlocked) HTC One X (Bought in UK). I recently received 4.1.1 update but I have decided that I want to root my phone. I have never rooted any phone before so I am pretty much new to the whole process.
I would really like to back up my phone as it is. I am not sure if it is possible to create a ROM of the current state of the phone and restore it if I want to. This is because my phone is still under warranty and if it goes faulty I would like to send it back to HTC in its original state.
I can backup my contacts, messages, apps etc. separately. It is the actual original HTC software I am more worried about.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Anyone please?
I have been browsing through the forum and I have seen few people ask very similar questions but no one seem to have figured it out yet. I have also seen many topics where people are struggling to recover back to stock ROM because they did not make any proper backups.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
So you need 3.14.401.27 RUU. You are on 2.17.401.x now?
Check htcruu.com, the UK ROM is widely available.

Thanks for the reply.
I have official HTC 3.14.401.27 installed on my phone right now. I have never rooted it or anything. That is why I am asking if there is a way for me to save that as a ROM or save that ruu before I root my phone.
Make sure you make a nandroid backup of your stock rom after unlocking bootloader and installing clockworkmod recovery, and keep that backup in a safe place.

Yup I have been reading that.
But it says that:
These instructions require that you have one of the ICS hboot versions in order to work (1.12.0000 or lower). If you have one of the new JB hboots 1.28, 1.31 or 1.33 there is currently no way to return to stock until a JB ruu is released for your device.
After checking my phone, it seems like I have 1.33. It seems like there is no way for my phone to get back to stock at the minute. That is why I was asking if there is anything else I can do to make it possible before I actually root my phone.

[Q] Deleted os please help.

Hi Guys,
I tried to get s off on my phone but instead I seem to have deleted the os with TWRP.
I have an international or chinese model (HTC_621) and tried to install a firmware using Vomers guide but when I type adb wait-for-device push firewater /data/local/tmp it just hangs so I cant install a firmware as Im not S off.
Unfortunately I didn't do any back up
Am I going about this the right way? I just want to get my phone back to stock.
I will appreciate any help, thanks

COLLECTION of Stock backup's
There's a nandroid backup for your CID in that thread.
Your post though... what the heck does TWRP have to do with getting S-OFF? So you pushed a command it hung for a bit and you decided to do a full wipe instead to cut down the hanging time? What does A have to do with B

You don't need S-OFF to flash a ROM.
You also don't need S-OFF to restore a nandroid backup.
The only thing you need to flash a custom ROM is an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery, that's it.
You'll need S-OFF for other things like making changes to the HBOOT(Fixing tampered flag) downgrading firmware, converting to other devices(Changing of MIDs and for GPE changing of partition sizes) etc. For normal custom ROMS(Viper, ARHD etc) just flash it through custom recovery.
