I used to be able to briefly press the call button briefly on my headset to do voice dialing, now not working. The Starburst ROM dev has not heard of this issue. Any thoughts? All I get now is a 'beep' in the headset like an error beep when I press the dial button, rather than 'speak now'.
Can you still voice dial using the device hardware button? (long press the magnifying glass button) in home screen?
Not sure but maybe you have changed the default action by installing a thirdparty app?

Nice one... well something weird happened then, a message popped up saying my voice search language has been changed to English UK, then a spinning white wheel thing for a while, then voice google search. I don' tthink that's the same as the voice dial I had though.
I reconnected my BT headset and pressed 'dial' and I get a short high tone, followed by a longer low tone as in "bip-beep" and no phone response.
Weird.
I think you need to go in to settings/applications/manage applications then scroll down to the voice dialer and open in. Next scroll down to "launch by default" see if you have an option to reset this.
I suggest that you do Nandroid back up first before testing this out. You can also check out some of the other applications related to phone dialing and their launch settings.

I can only find Voice Search, no Voice Dialler app, unless it is 'Voice Search'?
Voice dialler and voice search are two different apps. Your rom probably doesn't have the voice dialler, so you may need to download it again. Alternatively just using voice search, say "call fred flintstone" and it will search your phone book and make the call.

I was on a quest to replace the crappy vlingo voice dialer with the stock google one and noticed that when I long pressed the search capacitive button it will FC any application in the foreground. Is this an issue with all phones or just with the mods that I've done to my phone? As and aside, is there any way to replace the vlingo app when using a bluetooth for voice dialing with the stock google voice dialing app?

Well if you have the lockscreen mod that's probably the culprit for the FC. There's a setting in the lockscreen settings that allows you to assign the function of long press search button

When you first long press the search button, it asks you whether to use google out vlingo. I picked google as my default, and forgot about vlingo till today.

The problem I was having was with the lock screen mod because it was remapping the longpress to an app that didn't exist.
If anyone can help, I can't believe I can't figure this out.
On my old HTC Evo, when replying to a text message, you can
press the microphone button and speak to text then send it.
On my new GSIII, the keyboard has a setting option to see the
microphone speak icon on the keyboard. I have it checked and
I can NOT see the microphone icon or input button using voice?
Is this a rom problem that needs update, or am I missing something
here? How do I get the mic button to show on texting to use voice?
Thanks, and I am rooted but stock rom/kernel. Rom manager also
does not work for me, says I need to install clockwork recovery,
but when I rooted it, it did. Also Rom manager doesn't have GSIII
in its list yet.
Belongs in Q&A.

But thanks a million, I was just pressing the gear.
I've had android for a year and never knew you

the mic shows up now!
No problem. Usually buttons that have, the 3 little dots on them, have different settings or do different actions.
I know this is an old thread, but I seem to be having the same issue...
EXCEPT, when I long press the gear I do not have the microphone as an option. the voice input option is checked in settings, any suggestions?
I'm on FreeGS3 v0.2.0 if that makes any difference

I had the same problem with voice-to-text with the stock keyboard and the stock Swype... The icon was there, but it would error out. I installed the latest Swype Beta and its working again.
I'm running FreeGS, too.
S Voice doesn't work that well for me. It has a habit of cutting me off mid sentence and when it does work it is often very slow.
Here is a way to to access google voice search directly by double clicking the home button. (I didn't see that this had already been posted).

This link has seven steps, make sure S Voice is set to Lauch by double pressing home before doing step 1.

Very interesting, thanks for this. I'll have to give it a try and test it out. I however turned of the launch feature for S-Voice due to the lag it would create when hitting my home screen. Have any idea if it would still create this lag even if changing the actual app it launches?

Just tried it. Yes the lag is present. I tried disabling the double tap launch for S voice after setting the blue tooth launch app and the voice search feature went away.
Sad to say if you want the double tap for Google voice search, you will have lag.

So I had heard from everyone how bad S-voice is and I almost didn't even use it. However, I started using it yesterday and so far it's great. It transcribes me almost perfectly and it is much easier to send text messages and call people versus remembering the exact syntax for google search. Also, the ability to snooze my alarm this morning without having to fumble half-asleep for my phone by simply saying "Snooze" is amazing. Has one else been pleasantly surprised as well?
Bottom line -- this phone just keeps getting better.
PS Is there anyway to use the voice controls that Samsung has for the stock music app for the google music app? Or is there a way to connect the samsung music player to my google music songs in the cloud? Thanks
Here's another tip about S voice , if you or others didn't know about it already. Open your app tray or anything else then click home button on bottom of the phone. There will be a slight delay. Sorry to point this out because most people I show didn't notice it until I said something.
Now go into S voice and remove the setting "Open via home key".
Now click the home key and enjoy your instant back to home with greater speed
The home button is waiting to ensure that you didn't mean to double click it. So with this setting off its like 'no reason to wait take em home'.
(Doesn't mean you can't use s'voice again just put it on a shortcut).

Nice. Is there a way to change the long press on the home button to bring up Google Voice instead of S-Voice?
I usually use and prefer Google Now, but have used S-voice to add appointments to my calendar as Google Now doesn't do it directly. S-voice is also the default voice command app when I use my Bluetooth headset, and it works well for calls.
But in general it's MUCH slower than Google Now to find or look up things (weather, local restaurants).

I would like to know this as well, or if anyone has some tips of how to access google now quickly.
Right now I have the shortcut on my lockscreen, the google search bar on my homescreen, and can long-press the menu button from the homescreen. None of these methods seems to directly activate Google Now to listen to me though, I still have to tap the microphone. I'd like to be able to use it like I did with Siri on my iPhone...

Excellent suggestion. Thank you. It does add in a slight delay now when I press the home button, but being able to double-tap to Voice Search is awesome. Wish it would work on the lockscreen too...

In Google Voice Search Menu>Settings>Voice, select Hotword Detection. Then when you start Google Voice Search, you can say "Google" instead of tapping the mic to get started.
Guys, if you are at home already, click and hold menu key, launches Google Now. Then no delay on home key. But now you have some options

I froze the stock music player with Titanium BU and tested with S voice (hoping to get a prompt to choose a music player) and it just sits there
Google now, say "play Journey" it will prompt which music player you want to use (as long as you have a few options) and then you'd be set.

So far I am finding S Voice much more useful for activity integrated to the device wheras google Now is more useful for searches.
Example With Svoice I can ask for a particualr song and it will play it. Same to launch an app or text someone check schedule.....
I am finding that with Google now it will launch music player to a group but not a specific song etc.....
Thanks! OP!!!!! That was an incredible piece of info.

This does remove the lag, but it also (for my ROM anyway), changes how a press of the home button functions when your screen is off.
With this option unchecked, a press of the home button when the screen is off opens to my home screen, rather than just waking the device to display the last app you were running when display was turned off (very annoying for me). Thus, I have just been dealing with the lag to get the desired wake screen behavior. If anyone knows a way around this, it would be appreciated.

I actually posted a thread about how the home button removes everything and takes me to the home screen immediately. I guess this was the culprit. Hmmmmm.....
Back long ago, I had a Motorola E815 flip phone.
I could use my wired headset and press the headset button and speak a name from my contacts list and the phone would dial the contact.
Simple; Hands Free; no internet connection; no complications like needing to look at the screen or press a selection or answer confirmation questions;
Just press the button; speak the name and connect;
My Nokia Dark Knight could also do this;
My Moto DroidX and Thunderbolt could also do this;
But, they needed special apps that were not quite as accurate and not quite as fast as the simple flip phones;
When I got the Galaxy S3; The Samsung voice app and Vlingo all tried to help; but, they were slow and inaccurate and required confirmation prompts.
I've just received the G3.
Is there an app or combination of apps that can take me back 10 years to just "press the button" ; "speak the name" ; dial the number.?
Thanks!

Google search can do this! In the app or on the launcher just say "Ok Google." then when the mic pops up and the phone beeps "say call CONTACTS NAME, PHONE LOCATION." PHONE LOCATION = mobile, home, work, etc.
It can do some other cool stuff too. Just Google it!

yeah - it does - sort of - but not super accurately and it seems to need internet connection.
- it just amazes me that those old flip phones could do this reliably without internet...
