If anyone can help, I can't believe I can't figure this out.
On my old HTC Evo, when replying to a text message, you can
press the microphone button and speak to text then send it.
On my new GSIII, the keyboard has a setting option to see the
microphone speak icon on the keyboard. I have it checked and
I can NOT see the microphone icon or input button using voice?
Is this a rom problem that needs update, or am I missing something
here? How do I get the mic button to show on texting to use voice?
Thanks, and I am rooted but stock rom/kernel. Rom manager also
does not work for me, says I need to install clockwork recovery,
but when I rooted it, it did. Also Rom manager doesn't have GSIII
in its list yet.
Belongs in Q&A.

I have the mic icon on my keyboard and it works... long press the "gear" button and then select the mic one.
Wrong thread lol

Sorry about the wrong forum.
But thanks a million, I was just pressing the gear.
I've had android for a year and never knew you
can LONG press the gear and get more options,
the mic shows up now!
No problem. Usually buttons that have, the 3 little dots on them, have different settings or do different actions.
I know this is an old thread, but I seem to be having the same issue...
EXCEPT, when I long press the gear I do not have the microphone as an option. the voice input option is checked in settings, any suggestions?
I'm on FreeGS3 v0.2.0 if that makes any difference

I had the same problem with voice-to-text with the stock keyboard and the stock Swype... The icon was there, but it would error out. I installed the latest Swype Beta and its working again.
I'm running FreeGS, too.

hilarious! i agree. why do you want the keyboard still up, if you have already sent the message?
honestly, i don't know how you would keep it up otherwise. everytime i've used any of the three i have installed (stock, modified IME, and swype) all drop down as soon as i'm done using the keyboard.
and tg for that. i want to see the screen if i don't have to type.
I want to have it still up because im having a conversation and am going to type another message shortly. My unlocked vogue running android didn't do it so that's just what i got used to, does anyone know if an app or something to keep it open

to save it as draft, and that's not what I want. I want to send it but not have to tap the input field to pull up the keyboard again.
I'm with you on this one. Having the keyboard disappear is annoying. There is no reason for it not to stay on the screen. It only adds an extra tap for no reason.
Coming from years with the iphone, and having the keyboard stay on the screen after you press the send button, I find the Android way annoying. Doesn't mean I won't adapt, it just annoys me.
If you want the keyboard to reappear, press and hold the menu button.

tapping the input field does the same thing, and it still goes away when I hit send.
i think you're in the minority here, which is why it's configured like it is. most people want it to go away after they send, because they're done with the keyboard at that point.
i haven't seen a setting to keep it from doing that. i suspect it can be written though. go put a request in in the application section
you could try swype i think in the videos the keyboard doesn't go away

Using swype right now
This has probably been asked before, but is there a way to disable the stock keyboard in ICS? I just switched to using the new Swiftkey and the little pop up in the notification bar is driving me crazy.
I went into Keyboard settings and unchecked the Selector Notification...but for some reason, it still shows up. Anyone know how I can make this go away?

If you are running stock, no. But some roms have added it as an option to remove that.
good day.
I'm running ParanoidAndroid. I disabled the notification indicator...but it still shows up, probably because the stock keyboard is still enabled.

You can rename or just delete system/app/LatinIME.apk and if you don't use google voice typing then untick it in language and input.
good day.
Just disable the stock keyboard in applications...
EDIT.. Once you disable "Android Keyboard" in applications, you have to reboot.
Google Voice Typing is still an option though.. so you may have to disable that too if the notification appears.
Second edit... after unchecking Google Voice Typing... the language selector is no longer there.

This may be a little late, but regarding the Galaxy S4, if your phone is rooted, you can find an App Manager app, or download ROM Toolbox, and you can go find Samsung Keyboard, and either freeze, or uninstall it, I chose to freeze it just in case I ever had to use it again, I downloaded Swiftkey years ago and that little notification icon has been seriously bothering me

I think this setting might be buried in the S-Voice settings.

You have to disable vibration on the phone. Enable sound is ok but do not enable vibration. Set ring tone a little lower and shout "answer" or "reject".
Ok, will try that. But why is the text in notificatin bar gone?

I am also having this issue. Its driving me crazy. On my iphone it was not an issue. But this new note 2 and my new voyager legend its not letting me answer the incoming call with my voice I have to take my hand off the wheel and hit the button to answer. Ive tried going into the svoice settings and doing what you guys recommended as well as disabling the vibrations. Still mothing.
You have to disable vibration on the phone. Only leave sound enabled and it should work.
I was having the same problem until I saw this thread today.
Same here.. It wasn't working and I even tried a factory reset. Lately I saw this thread and now it started working. No vibration should be enabled for this function to work. The popup message had already said this but I mistook it for the silent mode with vibration and kept on trying different ways. But the point as clear from above is, vibration should be fully disabled and the phone shoud be in ring only mode for answer via voice feature to function properly...
I used to get a small TTY icon on the notifier bar when I plugged in the headphones. I don't anymore, but a friend needs it.
does anyone know how to turn it on and off? I have searched all over, and can't seem to find it!
Thanks ahead of time!
Aloha
BTW:
Its on a TMO GS3 running stock JB if that's any difference.
Solved!
After hunting for all this while, I found what it was. Open the stock dialer, and press menu>Settings:
All the wsy down the list there is a TTY settings box to check or uncheck.
On cm 10.1 it's under system settings. Language and input

Nobody ?
The only thing I can think of is there is an option in Accessory to show a menu in the notification drawer when you connect headphones. I don't see anything about TTS but maybe there's another option or mod for that.
Is there voice input apart from S Voice? I have tried a couple of other keyboards (including, of course the Google keyboard) and there is no mic icon to be found. I have scoured the menus, including the developers menu, finding nothing that would enable voice input or voice typing. Really perplexing and frustrating omission of a feature. I am running rooted and stock. Any ideas how/if it can be done? Thanx.
Samsung Keyboard has the Samsung Voice
Swype has it's Dragon key for voice input
You can also Select while typing Google Voice Input (not really a button but it is not really a keyboard either).
sorry, I don't understand...

Are you saying there is a way to get voice input? I do not know what the dragon key is. ?? I do not understand your last comment either. Sorry if I sound like a doof or something. I am fairly adept at setting up these phones but this issue just eludes me. Could you explain it to me like I was a 4 year old?

Yes.
You can select whatever keyboard you have loaded by selecting the keyboad symbol when you swipe down from the top.
Four Images...
1) Samsung Standard keyboard has a mic button
2) If you load Swype, they have what they call Dragon Talk which is the flame looking key on the right.
3) If when selecting input device (The keyboard at the top) and select Google Voice Type, you get
4) which is ready to listen to your text. It's not really a keyboard but can be used regardless of what keyboard you have selected.
Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to reply with attachments. I just downloaded Swype/Dragon and surprisingly the voice input works! However I still have no 'mic' button in Samsung or Google keyboards. Strange. Any ideas? I am happy to use the Swype but I would like to figure why that feature is not working in the other two keyboards.

make sure voice typing is selected in language and inputs under your settings.
on your keyboard if you have a 3rd party keybard to the left of the keyboards space bar (the one with the 3 lil dots on it) hold the button down until the button shows more options. One of them is the mic. the button will default to whatever that last selection is.
I get what you're saying...
The problem is there is no selection in settings to activate voice typing. Also on the Samsung keyboard, pressing the button to the left of the space bar only yields the options shown in the screen shots below. Again thanks for your input and assistance.

Oh in that case, you need to install Google search, will automatically install the voice and GNow features.
Thanks
Yep, that did it. Thank you. Pretty lame that this isn't a feature of the OS itself, but hey we're talking Google... Thank so much to all who have contributed to the solution.
