unrevoked said it worked, but can't get past recovery? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my friend tried to root his incredible without his SD card in. i was next to him making sure he did it all correctly but i was unaware that he didn't have his card in.
well unrevoked said it rooted fine, but yet when we are in recovery, no matter what option we get it takes us to a black screen.
EDIT: i'm an idiot. i have an evo, and us evo users use the power button as an enter key in recovery. hahahaha i can't believe how dumb i am.

How did he even manage to run unrevoked without the sd card in? Where did he place the .zip? On the phone's internal memory?
Need some more detail...

[Q] I need help

Early this morning, I rooted my Droid Incredible using the Unrevoked 3 method. After doing so, I completely forgot to create a nandroid backup and went ahead to install a custom ROM (Cyanogen Mod). Now here's the issue. I want to get back to the Stock 2.2 sense. I tried to unroot my droid, but nothing seems to be working. Can someone please help?
You need to flash a stock rom back before unrooting.
Where can I get a stock ROM. I think I just bricked it now because it won't even boot Cyanogen Mod. It's stuck at the HTC Incredible white screen.
Do you know what type of screen you're using? Slcd or amoled ? Each method has a different way of unrooting. Just in a Google search engine type in who to unroot Droid incredible, and then the what screen it is. You can potentially brick your phone if you use the amoled method on a slcd one.
With the amolcd screen it's as simple as finding the right file, hence doing the search engine. When you get the file, all you have to do is just place it in the root of your phone, and turn off your phone and press and hold the power button and the volume button at the same time.
With slcd you have to do it different way. Assuming you haven't messed with the radio, if you did, you have to flash a 07.28 radio. But assuming you didn't touch that, you have to flash something that puts s-on. Ans then after that you have to put a file into the root of your SD card and then flash appropriately.
Now I did this multiple times, rooting and unrooting, and for some reason there's always so
Something drawing me back into rooting and flashing a new rom. There's no greater satisfaction than knowing you can do anything with your phone. But it's entirely your choice.
Oh yeah, to figure out what screen you have go to settings then about phone then hardware information and 002 is amoled and 003 is slcd. Google is your best friend after you figure out what screen you have. Good luck!

You haven't officially bricked it until you can't power it on at all. Try taking out the battery and then holding the power button and volume down. If you can access the white boot screen where it gives you a choice of accessing recovery there is still plenty of hope. Don't freak out you haven't bricked your phone

I can't load anything. The farthest I can go is to ClockWord Recovery, and when I try to reboot the phone, it's stuck on HTC Incredible. That being said, I can't check what screen type I have. However, before it was bricked, I did flash a file to make S- on. And, when I tried degrading my firmware, nothing happened. :/
OK first off the name of the first that you flash should start with a "p" I don't exactly remember the exact file name. Make sure you have s-on, I'm sure you do. And then put that p something file into the root of your SD card. root as in, it isn't in any folder.
Now when you flash this, you don't do it in clockwork recovery, you do it through hboot I believe. Hboot is the white screen when you hold on the power button and volume down. It should automatically read the p something file. And it'll ask you if you want to update. Say yes and then just let it install

PB31IMG, I attempted to Flash it in HBOOT, but it didn't work. Now, I can't even connect my Droid to my computer.
I'm screwed.
Sorry for the double post, but I just followed some whacked-out tutorial that told me to format everything via Clockworkmod Recovery...now when I boot my phone, it goes straight to HBOOT and won't do anything...
OK what can you do exactly, you can get to hboot and what else. Also when did you buy your Droid incredible ? We might be able to figure out which screen you have based on that. Oh yeah and where did you buy it from? Also, even if you can't mount it you can still easily take out your SD card to flash files that way. Don't lose hope, we can still get back to stock

I bought it near the beginning of October, I believe it was the 9th? And, I bought it at Verizon.
Aside from being able to get to HBOOT, I can get to Clockworkmod Recovery...but that's about it.
Can't remember exactly how to tell but know you can tell by the model #under the battery on the phone.

If you could get to clockwork u should be able to flash a rom if your sd wont mount use a card reader and plug directly into your comp

my brother bought his dinc before you and he got a SLCD screen, chances are that's what you have.
here's the page i used to unroot my brother's SLCD screen,
http://dougpiston.com/?p=7
follow it exactly, and just like jaysckap said, you can always take out your microsd card and put it into a usb reader

Ok if you have a card reader for you SD card load it in and open you card on your PC. You need to make sure that the sd card is in FAT32 format otherwise when you try to load the PB31IMG file it wont read it. To check this go to my computer, find the removable drive for the SD card right click and go to properties, you should see what format its in. If it's FAT format copy everything from your sdcard to a folder on your PC, go back and right click on the removable drive and format the card to FAT32. Then of course copy everything back to your card. Then try the PB31IMG file again in hboot.
I would personally just go in recovery and wipe to factory, then choose the option to install zip from card and install the rom or which ever rom you want so the phone loads again. Good luck!
For now, I'm going to flash a new rom and hopefully I can fully boot my Droid again. Afterwards, I'll try to flash that file again. BUT, the first time I did it, I put it in the root of my SD card and booted HBOOT and nothing happened.
EDIT: This ROM is going to take close to 30 minute to download , so I guess I'll be back in 30 minutes; don't leave me please.
do you have a sd card reader? if you do, pop out your sd card and make sure it's format is FAT32, nothing will happen if it isnt FAT32

[Q] I tried rooting and....I guess I screwed up?

Here's my 4 hour journey...
I tried rooting my Evo using AutoRoot v2.4 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448 I would post there but I don't have permissions, plus my problem seems more general at this point anyway). I followed all of the instructions (I'm running Android 2.2 with 3.70.651.1). At first, it was telling me that it was unable to root. After trying a couple things (such as killing all running processes), I used an RUU of 3.70.651.1 (http://www.multiupload.com/W679R1W391). I ran AutoRoot again, and this time it told me Root was successful and took me to the bootloader screen. As it did this, the AutoRoot DOS window just disappeared. I rebooted and tried a few more times, same result.
Here's where I'm not quite sure what I did. I think the next thing was I went into Recovery from bootloader, didn't really know what I was doing, and did a battery pull. Then I tried to factory reset by going bootloader -> clear storage. When I went to try and run AutoRoot again, my computer wasn't recognizing my Evo (I guess restoring the Evo caused it to lose the drivers?). When I plugged it in, it briefly searched for several "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM" drivers (weird, never saw it look for those before when I plugged in my Evo?), asked me if I had a disk that came with the hardware, and when I said no it told me it couldn't find the drivers.
So basically my computer doesn't seem to recognize my Evo anymore even though it seems to be at its factory original stock settings. To top it off, it now seems to be stuck in a continuous reboot cycle every couple minutes or so (the worst that's ever happened to me before was semi-random restarts, maybe a couple times per week). I tried doing a factory reset by doing bootloader -> recovery -> menu -> factory reset but that didn't do anything. And I don't think it's charging anymore, considering that the battery is slowly getting lower and lower even though the orange light goes on when it's plugged in (though maybe it's just losing more battery than its gaining through all this restarting). At this point all I want is to get out of this continuous reboot cycle that I've spent the last couple hours trying to look for solutions for, with no luck. Much less re-customize my phone to how it was pre-restore and much less actually get through rooting it... Any help?
First re-run your RUU.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install ; download the modified hboot drivers
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/ ; download unrevoked
Make sure to have installed, then uninstall htc sync on your computer, and that usb debugging is enabled on your phone. Then run unrevoked and you should be good to go.
"First re-run your RUU."
But my PC isn't recognizing my Evo, I guess because something is wrong with the drivers? I tried running the RUU and it said Error [170]: USB Connection Error.

How should I access my sdcard, since my PC isn't recognizing my phone?
I could probably do it via another phone, but I won't have access to that until tomorrow; is that the only way?
Edit: Oh boy. Just tried typing your link in on my phone, and apparently the phone doesn't recognize its sdcard... Might be why my PC isn't seeing my phone?
Well, you can take the battery out, remove the sdcard, the mount it to your computer via micro usb adapater.

Don't have one of those, but even if I did (or got the files on there via another phone), wouldn't the fact that it won't recognize the sdcard be a problem when trying to get it to apply the update?
The battery is starting to get really low (about 10%), I think it's not recognizing the charger

Then what you could do is copy the files on the sdcard to the pc, then re-format it from there, then place the files on it, and stick it on the charger asap.
This link to recover sd card and usb:

Then let charge, use external wall charger if needed. If you have to buy one, its like 5 or 10 bucks and its better then having to buy a whole new phone.
Then, download the PC36IMG.zip (RUU in zip form), place on root of sd card, boot into bootloader, let it scan, when it asks if you want to run the update, say yes. Bada bing bada boom, your up and running. Then go download Unrevoked, its easier if your not completely sure what your doing, plus it has a nice and pretty UI that you cant possibly screw up and 5 minutes later your completely rooted, simple as that.

Pardon me if I'm misunderstanding, but what I'm seeing from your post is that to fix the sd card issue I need to fix the usb issue, to fix the usb issue i need to get root, and to get root i need to fix the sd card issue? Haha, yeah I lost you somewhere along the way...
@teh roxxorz - You're saying that the sd card issue should be fixed if I reformat the SD card on my PC? If so, that's what I'm going to try tomorrow when I have that other phone I can use.
That should fix your issue.
So I reformatted the sdcard on my PC, got the PC36IMG.zip on there, ran it via bootloader, and it worked. But, I'm still stuck in the continuous reboot cycle, can't connect my phone to the PC, and in the brief moments it stays on, it won't recognize the sdcard...
On the bright side, it successfully charged overnight, so that's not going to be a problem.
I'm hesitant to try rooting (if that's even possible at this point) to fix the problem while it's in this state in case I have to take it back to Sprint, unless there's a reason that should fix the problem? It seems pretty hopeless right now...
If you're phone is still acting crazy & it won't stay on, I wouldn't try unrevoked. Just get rid of any evidence of rooting from your SD card, and take it back to Sprint - assuming you're s-on. If you have insurance, they'll give you a new one for free. Otherwise, I'm not sure what it will cost or if it will, or if you'll have to go through HTC.

It sounds like you put your phone in diagnostic mode, when turning it on Volume Down takes it to the bootloader while Volume Up does Diag Mode. Check to see whether or not your phone shows S-OFF in the bootloader, if so you'll want to run the FlashZip script and select the Sprint Lovers file.
However, if your computer is still having trouble recognizing your phone let it sit for two minutes without the battery. If that still does not fix it use Volume Up and power one more time to try and take it out of that. I would also recommend against running Unrevoked if your phone is in Diag mode, it is very easy to permanently mess something up with it in that state.
edit: If you need to charge it more just turn the phone off and it should charge fine.
Problem I'm seeing is that u used auto root. I've seen nothing but thread after thread of problems with it. I've always used unrevoked3 and I've rooted many different phones including...2 heros, 2 evos, an Eris, a Droid, a Droid 2, and a Droid incredible. Never once did it fail or give me any issues. Simply follow the instructions and even watch the video on their site. If I where u I'd just ruu ur phone and start all over.

My phone has always been S-ON throughout this.
I did try leaving it off and without battery for extended periods of time - no dice.
How could I tell if it's in diagnostic mode and what does diagnotistic mode do?

So I took it to Sprint, they spent a couple hours on it, placed an order for a new one, and gave me this one back saying it was dead and unfixable (I think all they did was a hard reset). When they gave it to me, it was on, and remained on without restarting for like 30 mins (I thought they had fixed it without realizing it). Just now, I turned it off and on again, and the reboot cycle started again... Any reason why it may have been working that one time? I'll probably just wait for the replacement, but just curious as to why it may have worked.
@Papa_Smurf - Yeah I tried to RUU it but that didn't fix any of the problems
I think it may have just been playing possum. Is it still doing it?
Yeah now it's in the reboot cycle again. Maybe if I was to let it run through the cycle long enough it might eventually stop until I manually powered down and on again (I'm guessing that's what had happened when I got it back from Sprint).

[Q] HELP i used a technique to unroot my phone now it wont come on

i used unrevoked3 to root my phone and i never did anything to the phone. no custom roms or anything. Im on Android 2.2 and i used this technique to unroot youtube.com/watch?v=irOD_Kho-Ks and now my phone wont come on. Please help or am i screwed? im a noob to this stuff
You're not entirely screwed. I'm going to say you have an SLCD incredible, and the one in the video is an AMOLED device on 2.1. The RUU you flashed was for 2.1 and the older hboot and radio. Made for the AMOLED. The SLCD is different and so you can't see the screen now. You will need to flash a new RUU.
Here is an SLCD compatible RUU: http://dougpiston.com/files/RUU/bui...and-2.15.00.07.28-hboot-0.92.0000_PB31IMG.zip
Rename PB31IMG.zip on root of SD card.
You will have to flash it blind though. So make sure it's charged. Then boot into hboot (Vol + PWR DWN) and wait a few minutes for it to recognize the zip. Then you should be able to press VOL+UP. And this will take a while. Say 5-10 minutes.
Then you should be able to press VOL+UP again, and it will reboot into stock 2.2.
EDIT: And you will need to use a Micro SDHC card reader to put the file on the card. Because you can't see the phone to mount it through USB.

[Q] How to repair a rom

Well I have had my question answered by a friend but the answer was not the best of news.
Evidently my rom is corrupted which makes me feel like a jack a** for not rooting sooner since from my reading of the forums you can 'flash or re-flash' the different rom builds and recover your phone. So my conundrum exist in the fact that i never did root since i love sense so much and i was told that s-off negated it period, my phone being bricked or soft bricked since i can get into the boot loader is there a way to root and flash a custom rom so that i can get the phone to work.
And also im running the official upgrade for froyo
espresso pvt ship s-on\hboot- 1.02.0000
microp-0620
touch panel-synt0102
radio-7.15.35.16
nOV 26 2010,20:43:01
any help would be appreciated since i have some thing that i want to get off the phone that i deem relevant in my life as well as the desire not to buy a new phone quite yet since im not eligible for an upgrade
What exactly is wrong with your phone? How did your friend know it was "corrupted?"
Have you tried this, as copied from another non-rooted person:
1. pull battery
2. replace battery and turn on power WHILE HOLDING volume down. This will access "Hboot"
3. use the volume down button to hover over option 3 Clear storage
4. select using the power button
5. hit yes using volume up
I don't know anything about the official update, but can't you update your phone again with that same procedure?
Oh, read up on your problem. You dropped it in water. Is that obvious? Can you check and see if they'll send you a replacement. That doesn't actually sound like your rom is corrupted, it sounds like your hardware is fried.

So this is my dilemma i have a slide that was dropped in water, it started to work for a moment then it stopped it's stuck on the splash screen and wont go beyond that. It will go into bootloader but wont boot in recovery mode. It does read the usb in recovery mode although i cant access the files (it just shows the hr glass and i mean for hrs.. I would try to root from this point point but i got the official froyo update so i cant go s-off and i dont have a gold card or the facilities to make one. Help please i dunno what to do from this point!!!........
that was my original question. I didn't get a reply so i got a hold of my friend who lives in alaska, who also works for an it company he says that it sounds like the rom is corrupted since u can access some of the primary functions ie. bootloader, it does read from the sd card, it does go into fastboot (sort of).
I bought the phone off of craigslist so no insurance there either, so rocjk in a hard place yes. Ive tried clear storage as well no luck there, as for re-updating i would have to be able to access the sd from the usb, and although it does read it every time i've tried to access it won't let me from the desktop.
So i come again to those with more knowledge than my self in hopes of garnering the requisite knowledge. How would/could you tell if the hardware's fried or not?
I don't know about your phone but on my Evo 4G I can load a fresh copy of the official 2.2 rom without going into recovery.
I just downloaded the RUU for my phone and renamed it to PC36IMG.zip and it automatically loads on the hboot menu from my SD card. It had to be on the root of your SD card to be seen.
I get the feeling that you may have a different issue if you dropped it in water.

would i need to create a gold card for that to work? or could i just use a sd card reader download and hboot it from that point?
I've never heard of a gold card but just did a search and found info on it. Yay more stuff to research!
I'm not sure if you need one. Someone else will have to answer that. I didn't need one. But then I used unrevoked to get root, now I'm not even running that stock rom.

[Q] Bricked Evo

I've seen threads like this but not quite the same. I'm trying to help fix my bosses Evo. I have the MT4G, so it's similar; still HTC but I guess the rooting methods or different. I'm trying to help him unroot now to sell it, but he's bricked it pretty badly. The phone will only boot into the bootloader. I put the PC36IMG file on the sd card, and it seems to start to flash that then freezes after counting up to [9] WIMAX.
If any of this is familiar to you guys, I would appreciate very much some assistance. I can't get anywhere but the bootloader, and it starts doing its own thing right away, so I guess my options are to somehow adjust the SD card using my PC. Thoughts? Thanks guys!

No big deal then, definitely not bricked...
Remove the SD Card from the phone, put the battery back in, boot back up to boot loader, plug the phone into the PC, (You might have to install HTC Sync for this) Then press the power button on the "FASTBOOT" option. Then run this exe: http://u.115.com/file/t541677279 <--- same link as the RUU EXE here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874091&highlight=stock+ruu
It's the RUU for the 3.70 update for the phone. it will return it to stock, reload the entire phone to that update, which is 2.10 hboot, and 3.70 software.
That's great news. I'll try right when I get home from work and report back in a few hours. Thank you very much!
unknownforce beat me to it yeah do what he says and have you which pc36img file did you try the amon ra right?
Hmmm... it won't seem to respond to me pressing the power button to choose options. I know the power button isn't physically broken, since the phone still powers on using it. But I've got the files you linked to downloaded and on the sd card and HTC sync installed, when I boot up it begins loading then wants me to make a selection, but I can't make any adjustments.
Okay, I've gotten past that (I had the wrong file.) Now I have the correct file, but I'm back to where it pulls up a list of things like Bootloader, Radiom Boot, Recovery, System, etc... and ends with Wimax. Then it just stalls. Because it won't boot up HTC Sync doesn't recognize it. Any suggestions?
EDIT: Forgot to mention that this phone is not finding the PC36DIAG file. I don't know if that means anything... but several hours of trying and I'm feeling like giving up.
