Pc connection Fail - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an epic running dk28, custom on viper frozen.Yesterday day my mac friend was having trouble rooting so i ran through the process over skype with him, first odining to fresh dk28 so he could see everything i did. Today i plugged in my phone to adb push a file from my computer. My phone wasn't seen. I checked over adb device command and it wasn't seen. My phone does charge and i have tried multiple cables and multiple usb ports on multiple computers. Yes debugging bridge was on. I also tried with it off and my phone is recieveing power but i dont see the little symbol to mount sdcard and activate it. I reodined and am having the same problems, both the computers i tried have the drivers correctly installed but a link to them definately wouldn't hurt.
thanks in advance

reinstalled drivers, think it may be a problem on the phones end, if i unroot it can i still get a free manufacture replacement?

just want to let you know that the adb commands within a rooting folder the adb.exe file works just fine. I just rerooted with no problems. Its whenm i try to go through sdk it get fcked up. It has to do with phoen though because its on multiple computers which is pretty confusing

Yeah you can as long as u are within your window. I would keep messing with it though. My comp only sees my phone on one usb port and it has 4.

Have you tried reflashing Odin?
Here's a link to *OFFICIAL* SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 (Froyo Stock). Just remember to turn off the phone, press 1 on the keyboard and power up once it says Download connect the usb to the device, open up odin (which you already have and it should see COM5 (or some other com number), load the pit file and use the pda section to enter in this tar (heads up once you download the file from above just remove the .md5 from the extension and leave it as .tar)
Good luck and hope this works for you.

I need to downgrade to 2.1 but I've found nothing useful as to how to do it
I factory reset my phone but that didn't help
all it did was mess up my USB connection from my epic to pc
I tried re-installing the update zip file, but it aborts it halfway through
can someone PLEASE help me?
Flashing back to 2.1 has been covered extensively, please use the search button next time!!
1) Installing this will erase all of your saved apps (unless you back them up). Any PURCHASED apps will be saved in the app market and will be available for re-download once you sign into your google account.
2) If you are having issues with 2.2, or don't like something that changed, or want to go back to stock 2.1, or just want to complain about this leak version, then here are directions to flash BACK to 2.1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700#Odin_Stock_Flashing
This will let you download Odin and the included victory.pit file that you place into the ".pit" section in Odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794138&highlight=DG27
This allows you to download various versions of roms. Download the DI18 file.
Put your phone in download mode (according to directions in first link), and open Odin. Then connect the phone to the computer, Odin should then recognize it. Place the .pit file and the .tar files into their corresponding areas. On the left the ONLY boxes that should be checked are "Auto reboot" and "F. Reset Time" then press start and let it go, should take about 5 minutes or so.
Then there you go, you have 2.1 again. Depending on what you want to do you can either re-install the update.zip or Odin flash to Dk28, or just keep 2.1
see, the thing is. I CAN'T connect my Epic to my PC
there's something wrong with my Samsung drivers
I uninstalled the drivers, rebooted my pc, re-installed drivers, rebooted Epic, connected Epic to PC, and it STILL couldn't identify my Epic
I wasn't having issues with 2.2 (except that horizontal calibration)
this sucks, I really have no clue what to do :'(
thanks for the reply though
No Prob, if you have clockwork and are running the rfs file system which is the default, which you probably are, unless you've changed it. If you have clockwork mod 2.xxx, you're good to install this and flash.
Here is the link:
http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/stock.epic.DI18.rom.update.zip
Instructions: Put on the Root of your SD card, and turn off your phone. Hold Camera, Volume Down, and Power and format data and cache. Then install zip from sd, and then click the stock.zip file on the root of your SD.
You're done .
One more thing:
**If you notice that your orientation sensor is off or not working properly,
Fix for orientation/auto-rotate problem in Epic 4G

1. Download a terminal app from the market - (Android Terminal Emulator)
2. Enter one line at a time.
su

3. Follow the onscreen directions, while making sure you device is flat.
pay attention to the bump at bottom on back.
After you're done, reboot.
I can't root clockwork b/c I can't connect my Epic to my PC :/
This might sound crazy but did you try ALL of the different usb ports on your computer? If not then try everyone of them it's a common problem my phone only works on one out of five.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Since you don't specify, I am going to assume your using the stock usb cable that came with the phone. The stock cable is good for almost nothing except for hooking it up to your wall charger (even though some may get it to work). I would suggest getting another micro usb cable and try again. I bought one online from monoprice.com for about $2 along with a cheap car charger, also about $2, and they both work fine.
Oh yeah restart your computer and phone too.

ok, first, thanks to everyone who replied
second, I bought a gigaware male USB-B wire and now my Epic connects to PC
however! I'm still trying to remove Froyo
I've tried rooting clockwork, but when I go to "RUN" to root
I get a message saying my phone isn't connected
If your goal is to remove froyo, then you need to follow whats in the second post by djbacon06... download odin, the DI18 tar file, and the pit file, making sure to follow the instructions

Cant root epic 4g DK28

Windows will not recognize the phone. Yes ive installed the drivers. I tried all usb ports. I need a way to do it without using a computer. I want to use the wireless tether app and need the phone to be rooted so i can get the free wifi from the phone. internet is gonna get cut off bcuz i cant afford the bill this month. please help. ive been going thru hell t say the least.

Or try a different cable, the one that comes with the phone is crap.
I have the same problem. With trial and error I found some very bizzare solutions.
1: choke a turkey and slam it on the pc box.
2: when the pc detects but dont show it as epic, go to device manager and under usb select the "unknown device" and right click and uninstall it. Unplug the phone and refresh the device manager. Then remove tge battery and put it in again. Replug the phone and it will detect it correctly. If it dont, redo the steps. If it fails on the 5th attempt, well you plug the epic, hold it upside down (meaning face down) and keep it like that. Dont turn it over. Weird but on my pc, when it detects it and I flip it upright, it looses the detection, when I flip it the other way.. It detects it. I can flip all day and it detects and undetects. Weird but it does it. Maybe g sensor doing sonething causing ti undetect?
What usb cord are you using? I had that problem too. The only way my laptop could read my phone even after drivers were installed was through the OEM samsung cord.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I agree with Leatherneck. The cable that comes with the phone is great for charging because its long, but as a data cable is sucks. You can try other usb ports; in my experience, the stock cable only works directly off a motherboard header, no hubs or front-usb ports. Get on ebay and find yourself a better cable. I got one for $2 shipped here in the states that is much thicker and will work regardless of what port I plug into.
I use the stock usb cable. Never had issues.
The command prompt would not recognize my cellphone when I did the One click root. What I did was restart my cell phone and on the computer bring up the Task Manager and went to the processes tab and ended the process for "adb.exe" and re ran the run.bat.
And then it worked fine for me.
Sometimes the one click gets hung up trying to find the phone. Just unplug the cable from the phone, plug it back in, and it should continue on.
If you can't root with one of the quickies, try downloading superoneclick (easy way to get necessary files, plus they are updated) from forum.xda-developers (dot) com/showthread.php?t=803682 and follow this guide thetechjournal (dot) com/electronics/mobile/how-to-root-the-motorola-droid-2.xhtml
If your phone doesn't have cp like mine, then just replace "cp x y" with "cat x > y". If you continue to have problems with this method because of windows detection issues, try downloading a livecd of a linux distro like DSL, puppy linux, or ubuntu (ubuntu worked for me, not sure if the others will).
Was usb debugging on? That's what stalled my root the first tim I was on dk28 lol
Also, the stock cable is the only cable I use on the epic and never have problems

You get cp when you install busybox, which requires root. Using cat and a redirect is just a roundabout way to do the same thing as cp.

Before you run the one-click go to your task manager and under the processes tab stop adb.exe. Usually works for me.

But how do I get busybox onto my phone without a workaround if cp doesn't exist on the phone in the first place? Can files be pushed directly to the phone memory after remounting /system as read/write?

Epic 4g Not recognized on Windows 7 64 bit

I'm from the Evo 4G section of xda and just bought an Epic 4G from a friend to play around with. I've rooted and fully customized my Evo 4G and my uncle's Samsung Infuse. So I am not new to the rooting side of these phones. However, I just can't seem to get this to work no matter how hard I try.
Ok so I have done Google searches and sifted through the various "fixes" here on xda....I cannot, no matter what I do, get my epic 4g to be recognized on my Windows 7 64 bit.
I've downloaded and installed about 3 or 4 different USB driver files. I've gone through 2 different cables. I've uninstalled and even updated drivers via Windows. And I've installed and updated Kies. I bought the phone from a friend of mine who had done a full system restore before he gave it to me. So if there were any system issues they should be gone. When I plug in one of the cables the phone shows that the USB cable is connected and I have USB debugging on. But my computer shows "Uknown Device." Does anyone have any suggestions for me please?
I've included screenshots of what my computer shows me. Any help, or reference literature that I may have overlooked, that you guys can provide would be extremely helpful.
There's a few reasons this could be happening. You may want to try different USB ports on your computer or connecting through a USB hub. Also, make sure you're using the official Samsung drivers (you can search for them on XDA).
Otherwise, go to the dialer on the phone and punch in ##8778# and under USB make sure PDA is checked instead of modem. Hope that helps.
I too could never get win7x64 to work but had no problem on other pc running win7x86. I wasted hours trying. Uninstalled everything, removed all references in registry, used usbdevview, device manager, different usb ports, win update, and on and on and on. Gave up since I had other computer and it just worked 1st try. Please pm me if u find the solution. Would still like it to work on 64 bit. My thought is the 64 bit driver, but I hear others are working. :-O

I don't know what it is because I couldn't get the computer to recognize my phone on my uncle's laptop (which runs Vista 32). It kept giving me the same "Unknown Device" message when I went to look at the drivers.

Welcome to the Epic 4g xda section! It just so happens I was looking for Windows 7 64-bit drivers earlier today.
Here's where I found them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
Then scroll down to the section "2.3 – ROOTING" and you'll find the listed drivers there.

I have literally the same problem, phone was reconized and connected fine when i was running xp 32 bit, installed windows 7 64 bit and nothing i do will work. Was your problem ever resolved?
All i can say is try extracting the drivers thru 7zip
then extract the files it gives you
then u should see like a folder and then copy and paste the
folder in the c: program files
and then go back to device manager and then actually manaually search for
drivers and that should work cuz it worked for me im using Windows 8
unfortunately that is one of the exact ways I tried to do it, thanks for the input tho. Just incase I over looked something searching for the driver manually, what sub category should my phone be under in device manager? thx
For those having trouble getting the drivers installed in Win7(x64/x86).
A workaround could be to use WUBI (Ubuntu's windows based installer that adds an option to boot to Ubuntu, while allowing it [Ubuntu] to be uninstalled from windows like a "normal" program).
Install WUBI, boot to Ubuntu, problem solved!
If the point of installing the drivers it to get Odin working...
The WUBI workaround would still work, you would just replace Odin with Heimdall (which is 100x better/more stable than Odin anyway).
I realise this is a lot to do for resolving a driver install problem, but... Heimdall pwns Odin anyway.

and if your in download mode when you hook your phone up

Ok I had to do the following inorder for it to work on my windows 7 x64 bit
I download the samsung epic 4g driver samsung_mobile_driver_v1.3.800.0.msi
I then used 7zip to extract the file
I then used the msi file and installed it
I then used 7 zip and extracted the samsung_mobile_driver_v1.3.800.0.msi file to a directory
I then DISABLE ALL INTERNET ACCESS ON THE LAPTOP BY TURNING OFF WIFI AND OR PULLING THE LAN CABLE OUT THE PC.
I then plug the phone into the pc usb slot
let the pc find the drivers
if it does not find them point to the extracted directory you did above and it will be good.
now do ##8778# and place the bottom into pda and if it cant find drivers point it to the extracted directory.
now turn phone off and go into download mode 1 key and power button and let windows find the drivers

Oh... my... god. I spent hours today trying to figure out how to get this phone I picked up to show me its sd card as a drive. Everyone on the internet seemed to be saying it was the lack of the right drivers, though they all disagreed on what the right drivers were. I tried so many different drivers, no luck.
That above, that I quoted: all it took. Why would it possibly be misconfigured out of the box in such a weird, impossible-to-locate way? Jeez.
(Anyway, I know I'm bumping a super old thread with this first post, but I felt compelled not just to thank this person for restoring my sanity, but also to bump up this thread's relevance for future googlers going as crazy as I was going.)

[Q] Download mode issues - not recognized

I'm having problems getting my phone recognized by Heimdall (both Windows and Mac) and Odin (Windows). Here's the situation.
I have a practically fresh install of Windows with no drivers installed. I downloaded Heimdall to try and restore my Epic that has the [Phone] ! [PC] screen. I booted it into recovery mode, ran zadig, used a non-Samsung cable, etc. Heimdall's detect button recognizes my phone. However, when I actually try and do anything, I get "Error: libusb error: -12". I've seen some posts from different forums that say this is correlated with NOT having the zadig drivers installed, so I reinstalled them and rebooted for good measure. I still have the same problem.
So, I assumed that Heimdall was a lost cause and moved on to Odin. I'm following the how to in the dev forum and I installed the drivers mentioned there (x64 as I'm on Win 7 64 bit), downloaded the TAR, and so on. I open up Odin, put my phone in download mode, plug it in... and Windows says that it's an unknown device and can't recognize it. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers several times, swapped out USB cables, and I can't find or think of anything more to do.
Help!
Okay when you open device manager and find the "unknown device" update the driver with your epic 4g drivers this will fix it hopefully... if not try and unistalling it pulling your usb out and popping out the battery and leave it out and plug in the usb and go into dlmode and it should reset things.

I'm getting a screen that says "The best software for your device is already installed. Windows has determined the driver software for your device is already up to date." and the dialog still shows Unknown Device.

this is a direct link to the drivers needed.
Well, I got it to work with Heimdall. It seems to have been a combination of the USB cable, USB port, and drivers that caused my problems. Here's how I got it to work for those who might have this problem in the future.
1. Uninstall literally everything related to Samsung, Heimdall, Odin, etc. This means uninstall any drivers, delete all instances of Odin, Heimdall, Kies, or any other software.
2. Reboot.
3. Download the latest version of Heimdall (1.3.1).
4. Remove the battery from your Epic and let it sit for about 15 minutes.
5. Get a fresh, non-Samsung (and possibly non Amazon, as that's another one that didn't work for me) USB cable. I opened a brand new Monoprice one that I had laying around.
6. Plug in the cable to a USB port directly on your computer.
7. Hold down power and 1 while plugging in the USB cable (this is with the battery still out).
8. Run zadig.exe, which comes with Heimdall. The computer should recognize it as a Samsung composite device or "Gadget serial". Install drivers.
9. Open Heimdall and flash. DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING UNTIL IT'S DONE!
Great. As long as u got it to work. Excellent.

[Q] Can you unroot without using a PC?

I'm new and I hope I'm not posting this in the wrong place or re-posting an old question, but I have been searching on this and other sites for days and haven't been able to find anything pertaining to my question, so sorry in advance If I'm not posting this correctly.
I have a rooted epic touch with rogue boot loader installed and UnNamed rom installed. I really liked the way it was running until I had some kind of malfunction happened and now the battery charge light won't shut off and the battery drains within a couple hours of standby time. the phone is only a couple months old and would like to take it to the sprint store as I'm assuming this is an obvious hardware issue. My problem is that my pc doesn't recognize my phone anymore so I can't flash back to stock and get rid of root, voiding my warranty. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling kies and stand alone drivers multiple times with no avail. I've tried with the battery and sd card removed and have also tried on multiple pc's (2 win7 and and xp machine). every time it says the drivers weren't installed successfully and to replace the device being connected.
My question: Is there a way to revert to stock off of the internal memory of the phone? I know there are zip roms you can flash from the boot loader but I was wondering if there was a way to flash a rom from zip and install the original boot loader as well as get rid of root? Any help I can get would be extremely appreciated and again I apologize if I am wasting anyone's time by asking in the wrong place or re-asking a question.
Ok so I downloaded the Calkin's_Stock_Rooted_EK02_ROM_v1.0 and got it on my sd card via dropbox. Flashed and now have a stock rom on it which I think is a step in the right direction.
The only thing is now I have clockwork boot loader and still rooted. and still not recognizing on pc. anyone know of an unrooted zip with original boot loader?
I couldn't get my PC to recognize either of my 2 E4GT's, each due to a different reason, both issues were resolved by going through each step in sfhub's debugging checklist:

This post is for the FAQ section:
Why is the install stuck waiting for device to be connected?
Your phone isn't being recognized by your PC as an Android device.
When the drivers are installed and the phone is properly recognized, you should see the following in start->run->devmgmt.msc
Code:
Android Phone
SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface
Modem
SAMSUNG Mobile USB Modem
Until you get the SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface to show up, neither ADB nor this script will work.
Here is a debugging checklist:
1) dial ##UPST# (##8778#) in the dialer and verify AP (or ALL) is checked (if CP is checked, phone won't be recognized as an Android device)
2) restart the ADB server (choose Option G to stop the server, it'll get started automatically by the script)
3) verify USB Debugging is ENABLED
4) verify USB drivers are installed (Win7-64bit see below)
5) try a different usb cable
If you are in Win7-64bit try changing the default install location for the drivers:
If you see an error like this:
Try running the CMD prompt (or e4gtauto-sfx.exe) as Administrator. Right-click on the CMD icon (or e4gtauto-sfx.exe) and select "Run As", then select Administrator.
If that doesn't work, try disabling windows firewall.
Click to collapse
I went down that list and everything seemed to be in order but still no recognition by pc. I kept uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and switching usb ports and it finally installed the drivers successfully long enough for odin to recognize it and to flash back to stock. As soon as it was done the machine stopped recognizing it again. Lucky break I guess. So I can now return it to sprint and deal with the hardware issue.
I would still like to find a zip file like the tar that I flashed that installs stock recovery and non rooted ek02 rom and kernel from cwm, if that's even possible.
Thanks Godswrath, for helping me out.
You could use wifi explorer to get files on to sd card and mobile Odin to flash the tar file back to stock....

They make a mobile Odin? That would have saved my like 4 hours....
