I've been lookin thru the forums at several roms n whatnot, and I'm not really interested in flashing anything. I'm quite content wit my stock ROM
But I'm interested in overclocking and searching for better battery life. Unfortunately, I find no current kernels applicable to the stock G2. Anyone have any recommendations?
I'm seeing about 5 hrs of battery only, which is bad I'm sure.

CM baconbits is a kernel for oc on the stock rom.
I tried flashing the 0.3 version, but it left my phone stuck in a boot loop. Maybe i flashed it wrong?

Hey guys, whats up.
so i have flashed just about every ROM available and i always go back to stock, for some reason i like it best, BUT i would like a overclocked / undervolted kernel to go with it and im not sure how that works.
can i flash any kernel while using the stock Verizon ROM, or is a custom ROM required?
and if i can on the stock ROM, are hydra kernels still the way to go, or is something better out that i havent seen?
thanks guys!
You can do a custom Kernel on the stock ROM as long a you are rooted. Hydra's Kernels are good but I have had an amazing experience with KingXKlick #5 really does great battery life with overclocking.
Thanks kungfuturkey for the insight.
I'm rooted but haven't begun playing with Roms. The more I look around, the more I like what Sense has to offer me... it is one of the reasons I bought the Incredible. But, if I stick with stock... I think I want to upgrade the radio and kernel.
I noticed your recommend the KingsClick over the hydra. Have you also upgraded the radio?
Thanks.

There are up/downsides to updating your radio, ex - worse/better reception, call quality, battery life. These vary by geography, ROM, kernel, device.
Opinions vary, and the ROM you run also makes a difference, along with the battery you use (if not stock), as well as how much/many things you synch
- take a look at the official radio thread - from there you should be able to glean what works for you.
Yes I have upgraded the radio which is easy to do but stressful because if you do it more than once it WILL brick your phone but just do it once and your good. Hydra's kernels are good but as far as battery life goes I've had better luck with Kings #5

I downloded and installed the latest version of virtuous sense and saw in rom manager there was 4 different kernels. Cyanogen, virtuous, evil, and htc stock and was wondering which kernal peoplee think is best at the momment and why? Thanks for the help

1.02 was solid as hell. I'm using 1.05 but have a few new programs running in the background and the battery life isn't as solid. Feels a bit snappier but it's hard to tell because I made a few changes. I'd probably suggest going with the latest kernel though.
Anyone else have any advice on best kernal thus far?

My opinion, when I was running Virtuous which wasnt but 2 weeks ago, was eViL kerenel 12-10-1 which is on rom manager.
if you check out the thread for it, rmk and evil post seperate kernels that arent found in rom manager. im running 1.05 right now and its pretty stable. just to be safe, use the default. on average for any kernel mostly with set cpu profiles, i get about 7-11 hours of battery life. (witth heavy texting, web browsing and light calls)
I recently flashed to cyano 7 RC. Ever since its seemed to me my battery life has been lower than with stock. This is contrary to the Roms reputation so I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.
I'm using the stock kernel mostly because I don't feel familiar enough with kernels to experiment yet.
Any advice would be great.

I have been experiencing the same, although I have noticed my screen off battery is significantly improved. I've been running the nightlies for RC1 and every build the battery life can be a hit or miss with the stock kernels

chad's kernels for GB are AWSOME for battery life. remember to enter settings/cynogenmod/performance and set the cpu to smartass and the min to 128 and you should notice a huge differance.
also i like to wipe the delik cache right before flashing a new kernel. good luck

I'm interested in knowing more about Kernel changes but so far I've been unable to find any comprehensive tutorials. Many of the stickies here at XDA assume a certain level of prior knowledge.
Its as simple as flashing a mod, just download, boot into recovery or install via rom manager, wipe data/cache.

Coming from someone that's been running Cyanogenmod 7 since 2-3 weeks before nightlies, and someone who doesn't charge their phone at night, I feel I have a little room to talk here. I am currently running the incredakernel by Chad. It has givin me the best balance of battery life and performance that I could possibly find (and I have tried all 2.3 compatible kernels, and some 2.2 kernels) I'm not saying he has the one and only good kernel, though it works great for me.

Smartass Govenor
128-1036 clock settings
Don't use Setcpu or anything. Smartass has a screen off built in so it gets amazing battery life. I've tried several, and found the best was not using it at all. Some say conservative gives better battery, and I can say that's false on all of my testing. One last thing. Every phone is different, and everyone's taste is too. This is not the only option, but my personal, opinion. Good luck

If something goes wrong with a kernel flash clockwork will still function right? That is to say that clockwork does not rely on the kernel at all?

Correct... easy as pie
I was browsing the forum one day and came across a thread where someone was running a Rom with baked in custom kernel that overclocked their CPU at 1.22xxxx, if anyone knows of this, what Rom is it and where do I go to get it?

Oh, and when I tried to go back to that thread, I couldn't find it anymore and doing a search has proven useless at this point.

It was a z rom with a ziggy kernel, i think super z

Great, and not I can't do a search on that because the f'ing search option disappeared again!!!!! What the Hell is going on with this app dev?

Good luck clockin that, my dinc instantly froze. I use re eng z at 1.113 and it flies. Plus is very stable. Ziggys latest kernel, bfs no havs.

For some reason, no Rom is stable on my dinc, oc'd or not... every Rom I've loaded so far either freezes or reboots itself like 2000 x a day. Any suggestions on that? The only thing I get full stability on so far is stock.

hey guys
So I installed CM7 on my HTC desire z. I love everything about it, but my batterylife sucks. I now get around 5 hours whereas with Sense i got around 17 hours. After doing some research online, I found some people saying that installing incredikernel would improve my batterylife. So I downloaded the latest version of incredikernel and tried installing it via recoverymode. Everything went fine and I rebooted my phone and checked my kernel version. It said I still have the kernel that comes with CM7. What am I doing worng?
versions I have tried:

Thanks
Are you sure this kernel is designed to work with our handsets

Well,... no. This was the only link I could find to download incredikernel. And if it doesn't work for my device, do you know some other kernel that uses smartass?
A kernel designed for a different phone will definetly not work on our phones. Pershoots kernels are good but don't include the smartass govener. I belive amazinglarry was looking at before he got banned.
And you should be really careful aboout flashing things not designed for our phones. Flash a radio from another phone and you will have a very expensive brick

I went through a bunch of kernels for the G2 last night and ultimately found myself back with the stock CM7 one. It feels the most stable to me. I currently run it at 1GHz and 1.2GHz for gaming.
