[Q] phone brand, carrier and update - Windows Phone 7 General

Just a question. Im using an HTC Trophy with a vodafone brand(splash shows up every reboot), but is now unlocked and am using it on a different carrier. When the update comes, and pretending that vodafone blocks the update (just pretending), will the update to this phone get blocked too since it is vodafone branded even if im on a different carrier and country?

I think this has been discussed before and from what I remember the updates come from Microsoft so it shouldn't matter.

ayt thanks for that. just asked coz i recently learned that the carriers can actually block the updates:
“We build an update for everyone, and certify them with carriers,” he said. “They’re on a regular cadence as they are on the PC. If a carrier wants to stop an update, they can. But they will get it out on the next release.”
“Updates are cumulative,” he added. “If a carrier doesn’t get their testing done in time, the next push date comes and it goes out then.
“Carriers could in fact block updates to sell you a phone. That can happen,”

I wonder about that too because I will be using my T-Mobile branded HTC HD7 with AT&T. I figure the update will be related to the carrier's software info existing within the phone.

[Q] Stock Desire HD can't find OTA updates

Hi everyone, my friends stock Desire HD is still on Android 2.2. When she looks for updates via her phone it says its up to date when its clearly not. The phone was bought outright and is sim-lock free and unbranded.
Is there anyway to make the phone update to the latest official Desire HD rom without rooting?
No, eventually the HTC servers will pickup on the phone... OTA is unpredictable when it comes to the company, give it a week... Or just call HTC and they could send to the phone. Its worth a try.

Google release the update to HTC, then HTC to your carrier and your carrier to you.
The weakest link being your carrier. If it hasn't happened by now, it probably wont. HTC have released to many new models for the carriers to keep up with.
It may be worthwhile contacting the carrier.

Thanks for the replies. The carrier shouldn't be an issue since the device was bought outright without any branding so the updates should come directly from HTC. The support page on HTC website suggests a soft reset. I think my friend should just call HTC and see what they can do. Thanks!

couldn't agree more, after rooting i have fallen in love with my phone all over again

Updating and My Carrier

I'm gonna be buying an international HOX and using it in Canada with Fido. Just to confirm, I will still get software updates for the phone, right? I'm just a bit confused because I know some phones (or all) can't update until their carrier releases an update specific to the carrier, this would be my first Android phone, just switching.
Yes you will, the carrier only matters if it's a branded unit.

Jelly Bean update for HTC One X

Hey, i did some reading and from what i understand, everyone in the world got their JB update by now. My One X shows a current version of 4.0.4 and can't find an update. The phone was bought in Ireland. What could be wrong?
It could be carrier branded, just wait, that's all you can do.

I don't think it is. It's not locked as i'm using it with a totaly different carrier (one that does not exist in Ireland) and in a different country i'ts bought.
edit--
i just remembered there is this O2 presentation or whatever it's called when i turn the phone on. This does mean it's branded right? Then again O2's users in Ireland confirmed they've already got the update.
Is wi-fi necessary to detect the update? Or can you detect it with mobile internet, then download with wi-fi?
It connects to a web server, you can check for the update and download it in any way as long as you have a data connection.

[Q] One X different SIM and brand OTA

Hi my friend has a T-Mobile branded One X with a 3 SIM card. Does this stop it receiving OTA updates or are they just slow?
I was wondering this because he is on 3.16 which is a little out of date.

No, it's the phone CID that determines updates or not...he's waiting for T-Mobile to offer an update. He'll be kept waiting.

The update will be released by T-Mobile in his case, and this will probably never happen in the near future, this is the thing that characterizes every brand he should consider himself lucky if he gets another one :good: i wouldn't expect it that much though
If the carrier insists on branding the phone then they should be obliged to offer every update. Surely they can't say no to the Sense 5 one?

yeah but they can do it whenever they want
Yeah i see your point there. But it does reflect badly on HTC if they do refuse to do a large update anyway and would on T-Mobile too. Would certainly put me off their contracts. Got the unbranded so i can avoid any update problem.

you made the best choice never buy a branded phone, this is one of my rules
And it's a good one to follow I guess it isn't so bad if the phone can do S-Off as you can just change the CID to HTC_001 but in this phones case no one has found a way :/

Unlocked typically gets the update after all the carriers push out their update. It's the downside of buying the unlocked version.
I kinda don't understand this. How are these updates linked to carriers? I thought these updates are made available over the internet, so if I am on wifi internet, with no sim inside my phone, what any carrier has to do with this update? What am I missing here? These updates are not available on samsung servers?
I recently bought a Nokia 8110 4g phone. Tried to update its firmware with no success over wifi (KaiOS). As soon as I took out the SIM, it found the update and updated with no problem.
Why my Note 10+ would be linked to any carrier? I did not bought it through a carrier and it is not unlocked. It is bought from Singapore and it is SM-N975F/DS (Global) version, while I am being in Europe.
Can someone shed some light into this?
Samsung holds on the Unlocked firmware update until the carrier's start pushing. At least in the USA.
Yeah, but it is unclear to my what is "carrier pushing" and why it is needed. Over the internet, Samsung servers could do this w/o any form of carrier involvement or knowledge. Why "carrier" is in in this chain?!? It is like my Windows would be updated only when my internet service provider wants it.

Exactly, Google and handset manufacturers need to step in! Imagine if Apple let carriers modify iOS! That would never happen! That was a good analogy by the way! :good:

Same thought. I stay here in Singapore & I bought it directly from Samsung, until now no OTA update. In Singapore, network providers never lock any smartphone, but 3 major networks here have different CSC (SIN/STH/MM1), mine was the non-network Singapore CSC which is XSP, still to no avail. I am forced to update via odin because of this.

This is because the carriers can customise the firmwares for their network. (add in extra apps; turn options on or off etc.) so therefore the carriers have to approve each and every new firmware that's developed by Samsung.
Samsung will do the actual "pushing" of the carrier-cusomised firmware, but only once the carrier gives them permission to do so.

That's highly unlikely to happen.
Carrier customisations are fundamental to how the industry is currently working
Can you give me a sample of this "carrier customization"? Fundamental to carriers or to us the customers?
It's most likely contractual.
So essentially, Samsung waits for the carriers to modify their firmware, release that first then release their UNCHANGED firmware/security patch to the unlocked devices...
That is such a crap model. Common sense would say to release what you can first... This would also push the carriers to release these updates in a much timelier manner as there is no benefit to be on carrier software if the patches are months behind the unlocked devices...

LOL, you must be new to Samsung devices!
I kid, I kid. But seriously. It sucks, but it's reality. Benn that way since at least the S8.
I don't show any updates available for my Korean 10+ 5g yet either

This has been the case since the Galaxy S2, if not earlier.
I suspect (but don't know) that Samsung have some form of contractual obligation to the networks to not release any new features etc. until the network devices (don't forget some networks may have paid a lot to Samsung to have an "exclusive" on the handset when it was released) have had a chance to get said feature.

Didn't even realize they had unlocked models going back that far. I has an S3 and a Note 2, but back then I was on Verizon so there was no thought of carrier unlocked models. It was a V model or nothing, LOL. My next Galaxy after those was an S7Edge, but they were all still carrier exclusive models. I had T-Mobile by them, so I had a G935T. They eventually came out with a G935U, I think, but I never had one.
It wasn't until the S8/+ they had the universal hardware for all carriers, and that's also when I really got back into the Samsung devices and started flashing U1 and U firmware. That was my first experience with unlocked vs carrier model updates. I didn't realize the update situation had been that way since nlthr S2, other than Samsung has always been slow with updates.
Yeah, I said earlier it was likely contractual. Like you I don't know that for sure, but that's the only thing I can think of.

because some carriers like to test the updates and ensure their services andbloatware are working before pushing an update.. last i checked tho sprint and tmobile use Samsung fota servers.. vzw of course just has to use their own servers.. att does as well..
even if u sign up to use samsungs efota advanced it clearly indicates will not work with vzw or att devices...
as far as the rest of the world i have no idea lol
