TMobile US Random Reboots - Defy General

So I'm having an issue that is starting to drive me nuts. I have 2 Defys. One is my work phone, one is personal. My work one has been fine for 2.5 months. This prompted me to get one for personal use. However within the last week I have started having issues with both of them randomly rebooting. Always within 10-15 seconds of each other. Work one is original rom, factory reset, unrooted. Personal one is rooted, .360 update, and a bunch of apps. On my to work and back home I can always get them to do this. I get a beep, no service notification, and then approx 2 minutes later they reboot. during this time they are extremely unresponsive. Already called TMobile thinking it was a tower issue, but all checks out well on their end. It's driving me nuts. Has anybody had this issue, or know how to solve it. I don't think its the phones. On wifi they run fine all day long.

Have you tried the newer uicc SIM? Was told by the pda team I should switch over. I told them I was experiencing a reception issue. Since both your phones have gone nuts at about the same time it's either service or aliens. You might try one sim swap and see if it helps.

Both of them are brand new sims right from the box. From what I've gathered they already are the newer sims.

Let me share my experience about random reboots. I had also put it up in here but didnt get much response.
I narrowed down after a lot of experimenting that the reboot happens because of one issue - "The phone tries to reconnect to data network while there is very low signal and suddenly goes into a boot"
It somehow boggled me for months on how this could happen only to me when none of the users in this forum had anything like that. I changed the phone too. But the reboot continues. I got an app called Shutupbattery which can automatically switch off data network when network strength is below a certain limit (i set it at -102dbm). This seems to have slightly impacted the rebooting process. I see some improvement but also not satisfied with this app. It still does not completely shut off the data network on the cut off value and hence the phone does manage to reboot again.
I am trying a few combinations of values and seeing if I can arrive at a conclusion. Let me know if this was useful. For me this is something like a deal breaker and I am feeling of giving up the phone or changing the service provider.

I can tell you for a fact that it has to do with signal strength and data. However 4 days after I discussed this with TMobile Tier 2 support, they dispatched techs to the tower and since then...no more issues. The few other towers I have had issues with I've done the same thing and all of a sudden the problem disappears. I've been very happy with the support. Better than ATT ever did. I suspect it has to do with their implementation of 4G. I've noticed when it does this I get a momentary connection to HSPA before the phone drops back to UMTS then GPRS. You can get to this menu bu going to *#*#4636#*#* . Otherwise call Tmobile.

[Q] Has anyone experienced service cutting out frequently?

Well I got the Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus a few days ago (on release day) and since I started using it, service will drop out intermittently. For example, I'll be in my house with 4 bars and a 4G LTE connection (the signal has always been very reliable here) and I'll be using the phone perfectly with no problems. I'll lock it and put it down for anywhere between 5-15 minutes, and frequently (not always) when I pick it back up and unlock it, the phone will say "Searching for Service". The same problem also occurs when sending text messages. I'll click the send button and the messaging app displays and error claiming that the message could not be sent. I try to resend the message a few times, and after about 10 seconds the phone says that service has dropped out completely. The last scenario with this problem is when I'm simply using the phone for web browsing, listening to music, playing a game, etc. I'll be using it and my service will randomly disappear. This happens on WiFi and when I'm using mobile data. It also happens at home and while in other areas (with good service or bad service). Is anyone else experiencing a problem similar to this? If not, should I ask Verizon to replace my device?
I was on calls on mine on and off all day Thu and Fri. I never saw this issue.
Hey man, I just returned my GNex due to the exact issue you are describing. They swapped me a different one and it seems to be fixed. I'm still only getting 1-2 bars max but signal drops are not happening now. they were happening so constantly before i was ready to just return the phone outright.
It's really annoying because they have to reproduce the problem before they will give you a new phone. They looked me up in the computer and said their system says I have zero dropped calls (that's BS because I have been dropping constantly) and they made a phone call while I was in the store that lasted 5 minutes without dropping...strangely while in store I had 4 bars but as soon as I leave the parking lot I get 1-2. I was about to walk out of store defeated and without a new phone but service popped back off and I was able to get the guy to see it and fail to make a call to my voicemail...this new swapped out phone works much better.

Just got off the phone w/verizon for the same problems. He stated that he has been receiving a lot of complaints about this issue. He said that he is sending a error report to Samsung. He also said that I could take the phone back and exchange it. Every one with this problem should contact Verizon so they can inform Samsung.

That's crap they should have let you exchange the phone outright...
Hmmmm well thanks for the responses everyone! I'm probably gonna call VZW and get them to exchange it today.
P.S. I even got a new SIM card to see if that fixed the problem and it didn't, so it's definitely a problem with the radio in some devices.
I have not experienced this in MN.
Got mine exchanged today
Hey, I had the same problem with mine when I got it out of the box. I took it to the store, and it consistently reproduced the problem. They tried the SIM card, then replaced the phone. Seems to be working well now.

Data connectivity issues

Anyone else having connectivity issues with their one x? If the phone loses connection for any length of time, it will not reconnect and I'll have to reboot the phone for the mobile network to reconnect, which is probably every 15 minutes or so.
I skimmed a couple pages, couldn't find anything, but I've found a couple other forums with people posting about this issue. it's an ATT one x.
Hoping there's a fix for this as every ATT store within 50 miles is out of stock on both colors and customer care won't do a damn thing for me but tell me "go back to the store." Bull**** if you ask me, broken ass phone and I'm stuck with it. Really?
I was hoping there was a fix, even if I have to unlock the bootloader and root.
Of all the issues that people have been complaining about since the phone was released that's not one that I've heard mentioned.
However, it's probably worth you asking the question over in the AT&T One X section, as this is section is for discussion about the international (Tegra 3) version and your problem might be something specific to the One XL hardware.
im having exactly the same issue. works fine when staying constantly in coverage but when i lose the connection going through the subway tunnels it doesnt reconnect. searching all networks fails even! its like the radio switches off.
i got it to turn back on by turning it into plane mode (which took ages and look like it had frozen but eventually ticked over after about 30 seconds). once i turned plane mode off it asked me for my sim pin again, then after that it reconnected normally.
which made me think... that shouldnt happen and has never happened on any of my other phones. so tomorrow morning im going to try going through the tunnel after turning my sim pin off and see if that fixes the problem. maybe when the radio disconnects it tries to reauth to the sim but but the UI doesnt prompt for a pin and it stays off... worth a shot because i havent seen anything else that seems to apply to the international version, only the LTE version and needing to select GSM/WCDMA instead of LTE (which this phone is defaulted on already).
then again this would only make sense if the poster has a sim pin on as well do you?
I'm having data issues with 3g and WiFi. Most of the time is fast and reliable, other times is just does not connect.
Stock HT24 international one x.
It's my only issue with the phone but store has said I can return when ht25 stock is in if I like.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I did not realize there was a forum for the ATT version of the One x. Sorry for the mispost, but no, airplane mode does not fix the issue, it needs a hard reboot. What I do for the meantime is turn data connection off when im not using it, then turn it back on when I need it. Annoying to say the least, but.... whatever.
I also have connection issues on the mobil network. Very often it drops out, and wont reconnect untill im very close to an antenna. Its a big problem, as it can't connect from my home +/- 100m, and i live right in the center. I don't have this problem with other phones, so i think its a HTC One X problem, even thou the phone company has a weak signal in my area.
I can confirm that upgrading to 1.29.401.11 fixed this issue for me.
I did try unlocking the SIM card but that didnt do anything. Flight mode did work for me but that was just annoying and I missed a few calls and SMSs being in elevators and not realising it had dropped as well.
But anyway, I read that the .11 firmware had a radio update so perhaps that fixed it. If you dont have the Intl English version like me (i.e. 401) you will need to wait until your localised version is updated.

[Q] Text messages and calls not being received

I've been having a problem with receiving texts sometimes and I recently noticed that it happens with call apparently. The issue is that I'm texting people back and forth and then all of a sudden I wont receive messages for a long time (couple hours). At some point, someone's text message will push through all of the other ones all at the same time. Sometimes when I assume i'm having this issue, I will send a text to myself and it will push the other ones through as well. Recently though I was made aware that during this "outage", I also was not able to receive phone calls at all. The signal is strong at all times (3-4 bars). Also happens when I'm home all day and not changing locations when it will suddenly stop getting texts and calls. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I restarted the phone and changed cell towers with the Airplane mode many times and the issue continues to happen at random times. It is really inconvenient. Suggestions?
Technical details: I use the stock 4.1.1 Rom that comes with AT&T S3. I do have LTE in my area.
And now it has happened 3 days in a row but at different times of day. This is a huge problem for me as I use my phone a lot. Any help would be appreciated
You still have your IMEI number via settings -> about phone -> status?

That's weird. Re-seat your SIM card, if that doesn't do anything then take a trip to your nearest AT&T store/dealer and have them swap out your SIM card and see if it still occurs after that.
I had a similar problem a while back and it happened to be a network problem with my carrier. Gave them a call and all is fine now.

It happend to me too. I went to att store and get new sim. No problem for last 15-20 days. Looks like i got stronger signal too.
Just to give anyone interested in this an update:
I went to the AT&T store today and told them my issue so they told me to go to the nearest AT&T device support center (which was really far away). People over there told me they heard about this issue many times over the past couple of months. The guy working there had a S3 and said he has the same problem. They received an email from the higher-ups this morning specifically talking about this random outage thing I have and that they are currently working on it. They were told to not exchange phones or sim cards because of this since it wont help. The issue involves a combination of Network and Jelly Bean software problems and happens on all new LTE devices that have Jelly Bean from AT&T. They told me to check periodically if there is a solution.
I guess I just gotta wait. Unless someone recommends a ROM that is not based on the latest AT&T jelly bean?
Bumping it up, both me and my wife have had this happen. From what im read its a pretty widespread deal.
Anyone know of a work around at least until they fix it?
Keep us updated
Same problem here - switched from Verizon to AT&T last month and started noticing this problem a few weeks ago. Back then a Google search didn't find much on it, but this thread looks promising.
Just to add my two cents: I'm on a rooted S3 with task650's AOKP (4.2.1) build 12.23.2012 (link). Made sure to flash the modem for my phone (I747UCLI5 from here). Problem: phone randomly won't receive calls or texts. Sometimes calling someone will fix it.
I read somewhere that on AT&T, calls and texts are received over 3G and sometimes phones have difficulty switching from 4G. Anyone know if this is true?
Do a full wipe /system, /data, /cache, /dalvik cache. And your problems should be gone 9 times out of 10 that's usually everybodys problem

Seems to still be working fine.
I started a thread on this also and just yesterday received some info from AT&T tech.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2123974
guys,
it is an ATT issue,
here is a temp solution for a fix:
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G).
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect

[Q] Signal indicator issue on unlocked and rooted AT&T S3

I have a very weird problem on my S3 and I have looked everywhere and I can't figure out what's wrong.
I have a stock unrooted S3 on 4.4.2. Recently I took the phone overseas and had it unlocked, I don't know quite how the person unlocked it, but when I got it back it was having a lot of problems. All my Data was wiped, but still unrooted but showing many errors. I was having an error every time I opened my contacts saying android.process.acore has stopped. I was also having trouble getting signal with a local sim card, at the time I thought it was some setting I didn't know about or that it was the network that was messed up. Then when I got home I continued to have with my at&t network, always showing no signal and no data, when I did have signal it would cut out in a few min and when I got Data it was only 2g.
So what I did was install a stock rooted rom that I had been using before, this rom took care of a lot of the errors but wifi doesn't work on it, so I had to install a kernel which was verson 3.4.0-g2d4cae8 ktoonsez, this took care of the wifi problem.
Then I looked around a lot for reasons that my network wasn't working. One potential problem was APN, I checked that and mine was correct. There was also a problem listed with IMEI and that was fine on my phone too. Then I finally found that sometimes you can reinstal NV items and that can fix your network issues. So I found a site that had NV items to fix LTE and flashed that on my phone through odin. That actually took care of my network issue! I can get network now and get LTE, luckily saving my phone from being completely useless.
Now I have a completely diff issue and I don't know if I'm missing something similar to that to fix it.
What happens is that I constantly only have 1 signal bar, then when I start making a call or send a text I all of a sudden have 4 or 5 bars. So I have signal, but somehow its not registering properly. I would be okay with this considering my phone is at least letting me make calls even though it takes a bit longer to connect, but the problem is that it's been heating up a lot and the battery has been dying 3 times a day when it used to last an entire day. Looking up this problem I found that this problem is common when you have no signal. Also when I think when I am closer to a tower then my phone has 3 bars most of the time and the battery lasts longer, aka when I was in downtown Houston I only had to charge my phone once during the day as opposed to 2 times.
Anyone have any Idea how I might be able to fix this problem. My mom had her phone unlocked the same way but she is still on official stock rom with root, and is having the same problem, so I'm pretty sure it was the unlocking process and something similar to the NV items. Maybe I needed to install a whole NV items file instead of just the LTE segment? Sorry this was so long, and maybe rambling. Let me know if you guys need any more information.

Question ⚠️ Suddenly, The mobile data connection started to fail.

POCO F3
Suddenly, The mobile data connection started to fail.
It suddenly disconnects, and I have to turn airplane mode on and off to get it to connect again, but it doesn't take long, it varies, and the connection is lost again.
And when it's connected, it's very slow, but a lot, it went from a 15mbps connection (before the problem), to a .3mbps connection. I have installed several ROM'S, and nothing fixes it. Another thing I've noticed is that suddenly he also started using Roaming when he didn't have it before.
Update: Testing with another mobile, with the same SIMCARD, i can connect to my red 4G, but in this POCO F3, when i tried connect to 4g cant, I get a notification that the selected network cannot be connected, The only one that accepts me is the one with 4G R (I think it's roaming).
UPDATE: Also I think that is a problem of crash of the Band 28 LTE
My modem often crashes too, since I bought the phone last year. Standard ROM, no unlock/root, updates when FW goes out.
I mostly see modem crash when the phone switch from wifi to LTE to wifi to LTE etc when I go outside. At one point I notice I have no data connection, sometimes it displays the "no SIM card" icon, the modem program loops and crash and the phone becomes warm because of this and lose its battery real fast.
Only cure is to reboot the phone.
Hi, my phone just started having a very similar issue after working fine for almost two years. I am on T-mobile in US, where are you? Did you find out any more info on this?

The truth is that I never found out, what I did find out is that my IMEI of my cell phone had a report of theft (I bought it second-hand) and only 2 networks (from my country) grabbed me: "telcel and altán", of which altán only got roaming and only telcel got the original 4g, on the other hand "at&t and movistar", nothing, only the company detected me, but they didn't get a signal... No way, I gave up, I switched to the only one that if he caught me it was Telcel (even if he didn't want to).

A lot of people complain about modem crash since the beginning, Xiaomi never fixed it. It seems the problem is happening when switching cell towers/wifi. At one point you notice you have no data or the "no sim" icon, you have to reboot.
I was experiencing that a lot when I was on a MVNO for the major networks (Mint Mobile, Google Fi, etc.). Upon switching to AT&T Prepaid, I am experiencing far, far fewer disconnects. Some particular locations will give me the exclamation point, but by and large it's much better.
It seems everyone is torn in half, between this glitch being software related, or hardware related.
I have tried everything to blocking out certain bands with network guru, to taking my phone apart and looking for some kind of issue. Been through countless roms, and firmwares, and kernels. I've gotten a new Sim card too. Have tried Compressed air. with nothing seeming to solve this issue permidently.

Phone does not restart. It's just that at one point, you notice your data are not working, you cannot enable them, nor make phone calls, you may have the "no sim" account, your phone may go warm because the modem is constantly restarting.
In the end, you have to reboot your phone and everything is normal again.
As it about always happens while outside, I cannot connect a usb cable to dump logcat or others.

Were you listening to something on Bluetooth via mobile data?
were you driving?
What was the ambient temperature in the room or outside when this occured?
Just trying to narrow down hardware or software.
My poco f3 likes to reboot with the no Sim error, when I'm driving around on mobile data, listening to Spotify via Bluetooth.
I'm curious what circumstances other users have encountered this error in, or what they were doing at the time when it occurred
As it happens about only when I'm outside, I can be driving (phone connected in BT) or walking.
But my phone never reboots, never.
