Just bought my G2 last night. Quickly I rooted/S-off/unlocked it. I decided to stick with the stock rom as I don't like dealing with bugs, etc.. I would however like to be able to overclock using SetCPU. I need to flash an OCable kernel to achieve this with the stock 2.2 Rom yes? I tried to flash one via clockwork like i would flashing a new rom but I got stuck in a looping HTC screen and had to Nandroid back. I was reading up a little on bacon bits and it says something about pushing in ADB but I'm unfamiliar with ADB (think I used it to flash my Slide but that's about it). I tried searching around for kernel info but I couldn't find much. Any help is appreciated.
Pershoots kernel for CM roms only

Well I think I got ADB up and running and understand how to push but now it seems the baconbits link is dead...
Is baconbits my best bet?
No kernels for stock rom, CM 6.1.1 is stable try that maybe you'll like it, pershoots support that rom too
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Oh okay thanks. I might try that out. What known issues does CM 6.1 have? Does it support swype? I missed that feature when I Flashed it on my MyTouch Slide and ended up going with a rooted version of the stock rom.
You should take a look through the dev forum for some of the older threads starting with "[KERNEL]." I remember there being a couple that supported overclocking on stock (but it's been a long time). Also, the BaconBits link worked for me, so you might want to try it again (otherwise, I think there is an older version of it you can flash directly through ROM Manager).
As far as CM goes, I use it on my G2 and haven't had any major problems that didn't have workarounds. You can use Swype with it (either the official beta or there are some guides for backing up/restoring Swype from the stock ROM).

hey guys, thanks for reading this post. I have just wanted to get this done for the longest time, but I simply cannot get the basics down. I was wondering you know of a video of a step by step, or if you could give me a play by play on how to flash both these items and get cm7 rollin. I've been virtuous sense since it was released but I want to try out the nightlies, and if possible do the attempt through terminal(mainly to flash cw3).
Just a question, do I need to be coming from an ASOP rom in order to get this to flash? And to confrim, I need to go back to the old clockwork to flash 2.2 roms, correct? Unless of course the 2.2 rom is supported by the nwest cwm. What's tthe easiet way for you to switch back and forth? Again, I thank you very much for possibly helping a brotha out.

The step-by-step is in the CM7 nightly OP.
As for your question; you can be coming from any ROM and yes, you need to revert back to v2 of CWM to flash a Froyo ROM. There's currently no easy means to switch back and forth as CWM v3 isn't really supported by ROM Manager. What I do is keep CWM v3 on my sdcard as recovery.img so that I can flash it when I want to try a new nightly, when I want to go back to my previous ROM I just use ROM Manager to download the latest v2 (v2 is the only version that shows up) and then restore my Nandroid backup

ok i am very new to the whole idea of rooting and roms and whatnot so i have a lot of questions and hope i can find some understandable answers from the xda community.
so ive heard about the camera not working on the 0004 evo along with some others that i cant remember when flashing roms so with my phones info below i need answers to the questions below that.
evo 0004(unrooted)
android-2.2
baseband-2.15.00.11.19
software number-3.70.651.1
ok so here is what i need to know.
(rooting and roms)
1. how and or should i go about rooting my evo and still have everything working
2.do the cm7 nightly builds work with hardware 0004 and have the camera work.
3.do i need to flash a different kernel
(other questions)
1. do i need to use clockwork mod to flash or is it even needed.
2.whats a "nand"
3. what does "aosp" mean.
and thats all the questions i can think of at the moment. so like i sayed any and all info is very much appreciated.

I have 0004 and im running CM7 Build 32. Works fine. So does the camera. To root, i used Unrevoked 3. It does everything automatically for you. There's a kernel that comes with the CM7 builds. If you do root using unrevoked, clockwork is installed for you. it is needed.
A "NAND" is a nandroid backup. It basically backs up the current state of your phone. You should do a nandroid backup everytime you want to flash something or mess with your phone in anyway. For example if you flash a bad ROM, you can boot into recovery and flash your previous ROM using NAND.
AOSP means "Android Open Source Project."
I'll see if i can PM you a link to some basics because i can't post it here...

I had a problem with my 0003 evo when I went to cm7. The black screen camera. Even bigger problem was once I did a nand restore the camera was still broke. Took it back to stock, still broke. I ended up having to get a new phone. Now I have 0004 with hw 3.70 and hboot 2.10. I'm very nervous about rooting this one but I'd really like to be running cyanogen. Any advice? Do you know what made yours work? Was there an update to cm7 that fixes the camera for the new hw?

My friend came up to me today and explained that she is new to rooting and custom roms on her android phone. She successfully rooted her HTC Evo 4G w/ CWM and Cyanogen 7. She then found herself with the 1x problem.
I was going to update the PRL w/ a sense based rom but after a lot of experimenting I found that I'm pretty much limited to gingerbread roms, otherwise I get a skript error that is completely new to me!
I've looked everywhere for more information about edify script and I'm guessing... I need a rom thats been written in that script? or do i have to change something on my end?
Also, I'm personally not sure I'm a fan of gingerbread just yet. As far as custom roms go, I've seen a **** ton of bugs on her phone. Currently running froyo 2.2 on my Thunderbolt and I love it. I tried downgrading her gingerbread to froyo w/ no luck do to edify... -.-
someone plz help. I'll be happy w/ a 1x fix at this point just to make her happy
Load Amon Ra as your recovery. You can find it in the Dev section.

You can't use clockwork mod recovery. It will give you that script error, because it can only flash amend, not edify. You need to switch to Amon RA recovery. It can flash amend and edify. Just switch to Amon and be done with it. Easiest way is to flash it with rom manager, or use a PC36IMG of the recovery.

Thanks guys! I'll let you know how that turns out for me.
I wont see her till saturday, so i'll have to wait till then.
I was just curious. I kind of don't want to go back to stock ROM because its backed up on my computer. Also, it wad becoming unstable so now I'm on Virtuous. I rather get a ROM thats based off that release because of the TV out cable. I hope there will be

Yes. There will be at least one rooted stock ROM. However, most other ROMs will be customized ROMs that utilize the new Gingerbread kernel.
I'd like to point out the kernel source may be for a kernel that only works with the OTA. That's how its been with the Tbolt. Not so bad because it would spawn a whole new generation of much improved gingerbread ROMs.
Thats all I wanted to know seeing how they got gingerbread roms from devices like the HTC Sensation, I don't think it'll take that long to get a custom ROM cooked up haha! As long as there will be roms based off it, I'll be happy hopefully they'll have custom themes

Nope, absolutely no developer will create a custom rom from this new official rom that's coming out. They haven't done it in the past, why would they start making new custom roms based off of official OTA roms?
Being on a custom rom rooted will we be able to update to stock?
Or will something go dearly wrong if we try?

okay, so, for us rom users who don't want to go back to stock.
do we have to flash stock back onto the device?, to get the update? or just wait for a custom kernal
and how does one flash the radio without bricking the phone?

devs play with the source code kernal and work from there.
You will lose root if you update to stock.

Someone will release a rooted version of the ROM which you can use, or just wait for your developer to update their ROM.
No. That update won't be supported. Everyones gonna stop devving the day before its released. Just kidding lol.

I'll wait for a rooted version to release. But if custom roms like Virtuous, Skyraider, or Incrom update, I'll do that

I'm personally going to wait until there is a root method. I'll unroot my stock froyo. update. root the update, adb shell and remove the vzw crap and install whatever new kernel has been created from the source code. best way to ensure everything works 100%

if you can root the update, no one knows for sure if unrevoked or any method will work, let us know if it does or not!
I'm on 2.2 rooted using unrevoked3 - such a easy process. From what I have been reading, it's not as simple in reverse. I really want 2.3 for the VoIP capabilities and improved keyboard but I'm afraid to brick my phone unrooting it. Also, I live off of WiFi tether for root users and I don't know how long I could wait for another unrevoked or similar to give root on 2.3 so that I can reinstall the app.
So I'm assuming I should just wait for a custom ROM like most everyone else. Is it hard to flash a custom ROM? More or less difficult than the painless 1-click root?
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
Probably not quite as painless as unrevoked, but certainly not difficult either. Rom manager actually makes rom flashing pretty simple but seems buggy for a lot of people. I'd wait for the rooted OTA to be posted and flash that. Might want to do a little reading on flashing roms and root in general, there are some good stickies in the incredible forums.
Can I use the root method even on a custom sense ROM?

I'm not wanting to insult you, honestly, but that question reflects a deep lack of knowledge. But, you're at XDA and that's the best place to fix that!
I'll answer your question....
Nobody could probably tell you because nobody has ever tried rooting a custom ROM before.
That said, do some searching and some reading and get familiar with what this community is all about. You will be amazed.
So I flashed the 2.3.4 GB Rom posted by JoelZ yesterday. Some stuff looks diferent but not a whole lot. Was I wrong to expect the newer style keyboard, lockscreen and notification bar? Nevertheless, it boots wicked quick and feels faster.

So I have successfully rooted my E4GT and been so for awhile now. When I got into ROM's i started with the Starburst ROM with I can not remember the kernel... Now I am on Culkins V1.1 with LoStKerlelExp+.
Ever since I started with Starburst and still with Culkins ROMs I have had LoS from 1-5 times a day. Complete loss of any data and call ability. I must force a reboot.
Can anyone help me with what causes this? I have read that its the Kernel and I have heard it can be the ROM.
I would really love to fix this issue and continue to try out different ROMs
I trust this is in the proper posting category.
Thank you!

What he said. The stock kernel is usually the only way to avoid los, and even then there are numerous cases (as u probably well know) of totally stock phones getting hit with los. In the last couple of weeks I've run all flavors of roms/kernels out there and while the best kernel for avoiding los for me was/is LoStKerlelExp+, I still get em'. I'm now back to the stock rom/kernel (rooted, of course) and have had zero los since Friday when I went with this latest setup.
Stock pulled kernal. No Los in weeks. Even in low signal areas.

forgive my newbness, but I need some help understanding the difference/utility between the roms (starburst, Calkulin, etc) and the kernels (stock CWM rooted kernel, renegade, etc).
I rooted my phone using odin and flashed Starburst Rom 1.9.8 on it. As I understand it right now, ROMs come with kernels bundled in so when a rom is flashed a kernel is flashed along with it (right now under kernel my phone is reporting 2.6.35.14-rogue-ET-1.1.1+).
I have had some LOS issues and would like to use the Stock cwm root kernel with the Starburst rom. Is that something that would be stable/recommended? Can I just jump in CWM and flash the stock kernel? Or do I need to wipe everything and live with out Starburst if I want the stock kernel? What will I miss using the Stock kernel instead of the customer kernels?
Thanks for the help. Feel free to flame away AFTER you are kind enough to provide a little help.

You can flash any E4GT kernel you like in CWM. Just remember that kernels are also packaged with things. Some with different CWM versions, some with root and SU. None of that should really affect the ROM, but it might confuse you. For example, the latest CWM mixed into some recent kernels, enables the home button for select and the power button for back. If not aware of that ahead of time you might errantly believe you borked something.
Of course, you can also Odin kernel .tars if you prefer.
Also keep in mind that there are possible effects on things like the ability to customize boot animations or their could be reliance on certain kernels for ROM integrated scripts. Best to ask about successful kernels in your ROM thread.
I agree that the stock kernel is the best i was getting LOS and now I am now. I am rooted using the rom only root. Waiting until there is a root that will remove the triangle concept all in one.
i been getting nailed with LoS at least 4 to 8 times a day. i just reboot the phone, its really fast at booting back up. only wait like 20-30 seconds from the point i hit reboot. after reboot i get signal back i am on stock.
