[Q] !!! Phone keeps cutting off during call !!! - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else had this problem with their HTC Desire HD?
My phone keeps cutting off in the middle of calls for no reason. First time I thought it might be my cheek or something pressing against the "end call" button whilst talking, but after this happening about ten times since I've had the phone in two weeks, I don't know what is wrong. The network signal is good!
At one point the sound just cut off mid-call and although I could hear the person on the other end they couldnt hear me...
The same issue I had with my HTC HD2 when installed Android NAND Rom. And no such problem was on this phone while using Windows Mobile. So I think it's some kind of Android software problem.
Any ideas? Maybe someone knows how to fix it?

Sounds like it's a proximity sensor issue, try making a call with the phone on a counter top and placing your finger over the proximity sensor, if this cuts off your call there's your culprit. what FW you running? the latest is supposed to have addressed proximity issues

No....proximity sensor works fine.
There must be some other reason. As I sad the same problem was with mine HTC HD2 when i inslalled Android on it.

Htc Hd2 call problems
I am having the same problems too. it started bout two weeks ago and its very uncomfortable. sometimes i just don`t call because i knw it`ll cut of in about 30 sec. however there are some very rare times like yesterday when it didn`t cut off...could it be a radio issue?

Before Desire HD I had HD2. HD2 worked great, with any problems. But when I installed android Nand rom on it, the phone had the same problem as my Desire Hd now. I tried different roms. As I reinstalled Windows mobile on HD2, it worked perfect again. That's what i'm talking about. So that could not be hardware problem.
This must be something about Android, or Android on HTC phones just do not wants to work with my Sim card correctly)))

I never had this problem (has been using HTC phones for almost 5 years now both WM based n Android based).
On dialer press *#*#4636#*#*, Go to phone information and check GSM Auto (prl) instead of WCDMA preferred and see if that helps.

Already tried... The same issue : random call drops....
It looks like I'll have to live with it)) Or maybe software update, when it will be availible for me, will fix it.

I assume that the drivers for the HD2 are not android native but some reverse engineered ones, so I would expect problems with it, in fact its a testament to the developers that it works at all.
There are some known issues with a minority of DHD's with certain builds, what FW are you currently running?, but I reiterate there is not a generic problem with android on HTC phones otherwise why would I and thousands of others continue to buy and use them without problems?

Proximity sensor failure

My DHD has problems with the proximity sensor. I returned the device to the vodafone store (Netherlands), and they changed the device for a new one that worked.
Today, 1 day later, my second DHD is now having the exact same problem with the proximity sensor.
When I make a call, the screen immediately goes black, and the device no longer responds to any button (not even the power button on top). The ony way to get the device back to life is by removing and reinserting the battery.
Video of the problem
When I receive a call, the screen stays unlocked, even when the device is placed against my ear, so I end up with my ear pressing the active screen....
I've read more complaints about this exact problem on the tweakers.net forum. It is still unknown whether this is a hardware of software failure.
UPDATE
The problem seems to be related to the lightsensor, when holding a locked DHD in front of a bright light source, the device wil unlock (as long as you keep it in front of the light).
It might be, that when used in bright daylight a DHD will function properly.
Also, when calling using the headset, the problem does not occur. When inserting a headset in a "locked" DHD, it will wake up.
UPDATE2
Some facts, to "bust" some myths about the problem:
- It seems the problem can happen on all DHD's, not just devices with a particular S/N, software version, carrier (telco) or color.
- It has something to do with the light sensor (which is the same sensor as the proximity sensor) since the device unlocks when held in front of a bright lightsource, some users claim their device works well, as long as they are in daylight.
- The DHD uses a CM3602 proximity/light sensor, the same as a regular Desire
- The problem might not occur immediately after purchase, sometimes it takes a few days before it starts, thus switching your DHD for a new one might only solve your problem for a few hours/days (this is what happend to my second and third... yes third device)
Seems like the same kind of problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811282
Exactly the same post. Nice detail that I'm also a Dutch user bought it at a Vodafone store.
So, that's at least 3 devices reported with this problem.
Is there a way to turn off the proximity sensor? This would mean I have to turn the screen off manually when I make or receive a call, but that way, I don't have to reset the device every time I make a cell
Maybe you guys have found why it failed the google test ?
1-2-3 from the first stock - that is an failure that will come back to all of us...
did you try contact HTC ??
I wouldnt be very worried tbh, this is surely software related else they wouldnt release any batch of cellphones and delay the release for more than just a few weeks.
Can you make a Video and load it up on Youtube?
If we have a video it´s much easier to show HTC the problem... maybe we can load this video up on facebook to the HTC page...
Really bad if this failure concerns all DHDs. But why 3 devices?
I only count LeonM1234 and WizardX?
Edit: Ah I see 2x LeonM1234 and 1x WizardX. Forget this post

A lot of HTC phones have a similer problem. Its S/W related (the desire had it when it was first out e.g. it the screen used to go black and not re-light untill you placed it on a table or the other person hung up)
I would be suprised if 3 phones have the same fault unless it SW related :-D
HTC's new Windows phone seems to have a similar error with the proximity sensor:
As I'm a new user I'm not allowed to post a working link. I try to write it so the system accept it.
www . techeye.net / mobile/one-day-after-launch-event-windows-phone-bug-spotted
If this turns out to be true it's more hardware related than software, isn't it?
i think to cancel my DHD order until that issue will check.

[Q] Screen turns off & won't turn back on (when making phone calls)

I'm pretty much having the same issue as:
CM Issue 2851: screen remains blank after call..
..except my phone is the HTC Slide (HTC Espresso), so the fix doesn't work.
Does anyone have a similar fix for this? Basically it seems as though my proximity sensor is malfunctioning.
I've tried wiping and installing CM6.1.1, CM7.0.1, & CM7.0.3. All have the same issue.
Sorry I couldn't post the link to the CM Issue because of the forum's spam protection.
Thanks for any help in advance!
I had this issue awhile back and it lead to other issues as it was a hardwware problem not a rom issue which is wwhat it SEAMS is happening to your phone as well.

But people having the same problem (from CM Issue 2851) were able to fix it with that proximity callibrator app. But the app doesn't work cuz it wasn't made for the Espresso.
Does anyone know of a proximity calibrator for the HTC Espresso (HTC Slide)?

cidica, did you end up replacing your phone because of this problem?
My sons was doing that, ended up being a faulty ribbon cable, replaced the cable and all has been fine since.
Sorry this is late been kinda busy. Yes i did end up replacing the phone cause of it. I called T-Mobile and talked to one of the reps there and we went through a quick troubleshoot (since i had been troubleshooting it myself the entire day). I even went as far as unrooting the cell and going back stock with the same issues. The rep i talked to just said ok well im sending you a new phone few days later i had my new slide.

[Q] HTC One X - Mic Problem whilst in Speaker mode in a call

Hi,
I just received my HTC One X today as an upgrade from T-Mobile. I've been waiting to get my hands on this for ages like most of you so you would most likely know how I feel when its not how you expected i.e things going wrong/not working etc.
THE PROBLEM:
The problem seems to be that when I am on a call using the speaker mode, the mic does not seem to work, therefore the person on the other side cannot hear me. I tested it again myself and it seems as if the mic mutes itself when you press the speaker mode in a call. You are still able to hear the other person yet they cannot hear you.
However when I am not in speaker mode, everything works as normal so I am wondering is this a software fault or hardware fault.
Please get back to me as soon as, as I really do not want to return the phone and go through the dreaded process.
Thank you for reading.
P.S
My HTC One X:
Software Version: 1.26.110.5
HTC SDK: 4.11
(As i am on Tmobile, My HOX is branded therefore has not received latest update)
I have the exact same problem, I bought the phone about a month ago, and I didn't check the speaker mode function, then I flash few different custom rom, Now I found the speaker mode problem as tkr1992 has, since I unlock the bootloader (although I relock the bootloader) but HTC won't repair the phone free of charge for me, they say the phone need a new mainbroad... will cost me 2XX USD,
I don't even know is the phone has this problem when I first bought it or after I flash some custom rom.
HtC told me it should be software problem cos it is the same mic that use in speaker mode or non speaker mode, so when other side can hear you when you not on speaker mode, mean the mic is alright, BUT they told me it need to replace the mainboard cos I have unlock the bootloader so they can't not recover the phone to stock rom, BUT again I already relock the bootloader and RUU the stock rom back to the phone, still the same problem.
I need help too, Any good fellow can help??????????
I hope it is just a software fault. I did just receive an update today from T-Mobile, as my HOX is branded. The update is 1.28.110.7. It still seems that my mic problem is present.
Does anyone also know what fixes are included in this update?
Thanks
Any ideas anyone? Would really like to fix this instead of sending phone back to tmobile.
Thanks

Regarding to your inquiry about HTC One X, we would like to provide you with following advice and solution as below: First you can diagnosis the hardware issue on the speaker. Please kindly type *#*#3424#*#* on the dial screen, you will enable the function test program. And then select "Audio Test", tap Run. Please finish the test as instructions.
But it didn't work for me the phone just didn't do anything, you can try.
Thanks for that, i just tried the audio test diagnosis. The test shows that everything is working correctly however the same problem still occurs within a call like before.

Try reset to factory setting, see if it does any different.
That is the HTC guy try to do to my one x.
btw have you rooted your phone or unlocked the downloader?
You have working Navigation application in background and this make call routing first to speaker part permanently, not to earphone - like phone is in Handsfree mode. Try to disable it / shut down it / and all be fine.

I'm experiencing this exact issue as well - has anyone come up with any possible solutions?
There are 2 microphones on this phone, the upper one next to the headset jack and the other next to the lower right corner of the screen.
While on phone mode the lower one is the main microphone because its closer to your mouth, on speaker mode the upper one becomes the main mic.
It's probably a hardware fault since you flashed stock rom and it's still not working.
I seem to have this issue too - did anyone get a solution
Audio tests fine, but in Google Talk, or Google Hangout, or Phone Dialer in speaker mode - the mic input is not working, so recipient cannot hear.
Google Maps Issue
So my wife has the same phone (HTC One X) and has the most recent update to 4.0.4 (stock everything) and found out that it is indeed either the google 'navigation' app, or the google 'maps' app running in the background that will give this problem. Simply go to settings, then apps, then stop the maps or navigation process, make sure you go to the cached processes as well and stop those. Right after that her phone started working again. I also tested with the HTC test tool code that was given earlier and just like everyone else the test passed fine. So this should be the fix.

Any update on this? Did you send it to HTC? Mine has also stopped suddenly a few days back while on viper 3.7.2. Tried factory reset, flashed the rom again, flashed other roms, but the problem is still there...
in may case it was a defective mainboard....
I had to send in my HOX 3 times to HTC repair until they (and me) figured out it was a Mainboard problem.
The first 2 repair attempts where quite strange, because they changed some parts which have absolutely nothing to do with the MIC and when i received it the problem was still here, but anyway
I came to the final diagnosis, because after turning the HOX on, it was working for some calls, then the MIC suddenly stopped...Getting more and more angry because of sending the phone in and receiving it 3 weeks later unrepaired, i once squeezed my HOX really hard during a "silent" phonecall and while squeezing it (on both lower edges) the MIC worked again.
After that experience all was clear, because this behaviour is typical for a hairline crack on the PCB. I wrote this on the RMA form and they exchanged the Mainboard....
So, finally i have my HOX again for 4 weeks now (after almost 2 1/2 months without it) and it works flawlessly....
So, good luck guys and a lot of patience

[Q] Broken Phone - Strange Symptoms

After two years of use my Desire HD has developed some strange problems after I dropped it. The volume rocker does not work, the WiFi and bluetooth dont work and finally the strangest problem, that the keyboard does not come on when you want to input text for any App. The screen and touch input work without fault, scolling and selecting icons without problem. Making phone calls and internet connection seems to be OK as well.
I suspect I have damaged the motherboard or some other hardware, so before I buy a new phone I was wondering if anyone else had any of these problems and if so was it easily fixed.
Cheers

I did as you advised, which fixed the keyboard problem. The other faults are still evident so I guess I have damaged some hardware or cable. At least I can now use the phone to text message.

Can't use front camera... HELP!

Hi everyone,
I need help to sort out an issue about my front facing camera.
My phone is stock WWE version, I took the first OTA (1.54.401.5 I believe), then unlocked bootloader, rooted and installed ARHD 6.0.
Everything was working fine, then I flashed version 7.0 few days ago (without upgrading firware, as I'm one of the poor "Whelp" guys with firewater, so I couldn't get s-off) and now my front camera won't work. When I try to select it, camera application force closes and I'm back to homescreen. If I try to setup face unlock, I get a message saying sth like "Can't connect to front camera".
I've tried other ROMs like InsertCoin, same issue. Only way I could get it back to work again for a while was flashing Maximus HD.
I have NO IDEA what is going wrong here.
I doubt it is a hardware issue as everything has been working flawlessly for some weeks. So my question is, could it be a problem of ROM/firware version compatibility? Can keeping an "old" firmware cause this kind of issues?
Thanks a lot for your help!
right now, installing OTA (after going back to stock rom & recovery), hope things will get fixed...
I might be f***d for S-off since 1.54.xxx.10 patches the firewater exploit, but anyway...
I had similar issue after 2 months...my ffc 'disappeared' when I used a system info app to check hardware etc. and also noticed the duo effects stopped working...swiping to ffc in camera app didn't do anything either...weird...took to Sprint store and they verified and I had new phone sent in as replacement.

Thanks for your feedback...
afterfirmware update, same issue, on ARHD and even on Stock ROM 1.54.xxx.10. Started to think itwas a hardware issue, thinking of sending the phone in HTC warranty (although I unlocked the bootloader) then I tried to flash maximus HD 4.0 again and WOOSH, issue gone!! FFC works as it should again. STRANGE as hell.
If anyone has a clue on how to solve this...
I have the same problem, I flashed the MaximusHD and doesn't work:crying:
Hello,
What version of Maximus HD did you flash?
I used version 4.0.
Well, what is strange is that after a while I switched to ARHD 8.0, then 8.1. All went well until last weekend, boom, issue is here again.
I'm thinking of a few things :
- software issue cause by God knows what.
probably not as I have had the issue with many ROMS, whatever version I'm using when it pops up.
Might be other apps but issue remains with clean install...
- Other hardware issue not related to phone (SD card...)
probabbly not as I tried to remove SD card, restart phone, same issue.
- hardware issue with the FFC, coming and going. In that case, not much to do apart from trying to get an exchange model.
maybe...
You could S-OFF using Sunshine and then reflash everything from the beginning and see what happens. Also means you'll get the right firmware on your phone as well
Hi EddyOs, and thanks.
Yes, did S-Off when sunshine was released. I used it to install HK audio mod on ARHD 8.1
Issue only came back recently, and hasn't gone since...
I'm completely lost here. Can a hardware issue be temporary, go, and come back? Seems strange to me.

Well hit it with a hammer, if it still doesn't do anything then perhaps it wasn't hardware but software. :silly:
Seriously though, Yes hardware issues can "come and go" intermittently. I see that crap all the time at work.
Could try and completely start from scratch again and see if it helps like Eddy suggested, if it's a hardware problem then naturally it'll have to be sent back but luckly you have S-OFF so you can return to stock fully. Unlucky for you however, if the device gets exchanged then it means you'll have to fork out another $25 for S-OFF as it's a 1 phone only license
after five days, issue is gone. Now everything seems to work normally.
No hit, no drop, no shock whatsoever.
Now just waiting for the issue to come back...
