Can't use front camera... HELP! - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I need help to sort out an issue about my front facing camera.
My phone is stock WWE version, I took the first OTA (1.54.401.5 I believe), then unlocked bootloader, rooted and installed ARHD 6.0.
Everything was working fine, then I flashed version 7.0 few days ago (without upgrading firware, as I'm one of the poor "Whelp" guys with firewater, so I couldn't get s-off) and now my front camera won't work. When I try to select it, camera application force closes and I'm back to homescreen. If I try to setup face unlock, I get a message saying sth like "Can't connect to front camera".
I've tried other ROMs like InsertCoin, same issue. Only way I could get it back to work again for a while was flashing Maximus HD.
I have NO IDEA what is going wrong here.
I doubt it is a hardware issue as everything has been working flawlessly for some weeks. So my question is, could it be a problem of ROM/firware version compatibility? Can keeping an "old" firmware cause this kind of issues?
Thanks a lot for your help!

right now, installing OTA (after going back to stock rom & recovery), hope things will get fixed...
I might be f***d for S-off since 1.54.xxx.10 patches the firewater exploit, but anyway...

I had similar issue after 2 months...my ffc 'disappeared' when I used a system info app to check hardware etc. and also noticed the duo effects stopped working...swiping to ffc in camera app didn't do anything either...weird...took to Sprint store and they verified and I had new phone sent in as replacement.

Thanks for your feedback...
afterfirmware update, same issue, on ARHD and even on Stock ROM 1.54.xxx.10. Started to think itwas a hardware issue, thinking of sending the phone in HTC warranty (although I unlocked the bootloader) then I tried to flash maximus HD 4.0 again and WOOSH, issue gone!! FFC works as it should again. STRANGE as hell.
If anyone has a clue on how to solve this...

I have the same problem, I flashed the MaximusHD and doesn't work:crying:

Hello,
What version of Maximus HD did you flash?
I used version 4.0.
Well, what is strange is that after a while I switched to ARHD 8.0, then 8.1. All went well until last weekend, boom, issue is here again.
I'm thinking of a few things :
- software issue cause by God knows what.
probably not as I have had the issue with many ROMS, whatever version I'm using when it pops up.
Might be other apps but issue remains with clean install...
- Other hardware issue not related to phone (SD card...)
probabbly not as I tried to remove SD card, restart phone, same issue.
- hardware issue with the FFC, coming and going. In that case, not much to do apart from trying to get an exchange model.
maybe...

You could S-OFF using Sunshine and then reflash everything from the beginning and see what happens. Also means you'll get the right firmware on your phone as well

Hi EddyOs, and thanks.
Yes, did S-Off when sunshine was released. I used it to install HK audio mod on ARHD 8.1
Issue only came back recently, and hasn't gone since...
I'm completely lost here. Can a hardware issue be temporary, go, and come back? Seems strange to me.

Well hit it with a hammer, if it still doesn't do anything then perhaps it wasn't hardware but software. :silly:
Seriously though, Yes hardware issues can "come and go" intermittently. I see that crap all the time at work.
Could try and completely start from scratch again and see if it helps like Eddy suggested, if it's a hardware problem then naturally it'll have to be sent back but luckly you have S-OFF so you can return to stock fully. Unlucky for you however, if the device gets exchanged then it means you'll have to fork out another $25 for S-OFF as it's a 1 phone only license

after five days, issue is gone. Now everything seems to work normally.
No hit, no drop, no shock whatsoever.
Now just waiting for the issue to come back...

I am also facing same issue..some1 Help,.
hello friends.. recently selfie option in camera is missing in my htc m8 phone.
Even i downloaded Selfie application from google play, But Front camera is not working..
Some one help us please..
IF any 1 got the solution, please post it here

Isn't there a HTC diagnostics code that you can use to test all features...that might help to see if hardware in fact has failed...that's basically what HTC would do if you were to call them...forgot the key combo off hand

[Q] HTC One X - Mic Problem whilst in Speaker mode in a call

Hi,
I just received my HTC One X today as an upgrade from T-Mobile. I've been waiting to get my hands on this for ages like most of you so you would most likely know how I feel when its not how you expected i.e things going wrong/not working etc.
THE PROBLEM:
The problem seems to be that when I am on a call using the speaker mode, the mic does not seem to work, therefore the person on the other side cannot hear me. I tested it again myself and it seems as if the mic mutes itself when you press the speaker mode in a call. You are still able to hear the other person yet they cannot hear you.
However when I am not in speaker mode, everything works as normal so I am wondering is this a software fault or hardware fault.
Please get back to me as soon as, as I really do not want to return the phone and go through the dreaded process.
Thank you for reading.
P.S
My HTC One X:
Software Version: 1.26.110.5
HTC SDK: 4.11
(As i am on Tmobile, My HOX is branded therefore has not received latest update)
I have the exact same problem, I bought the phone about a month ago, and I didn't check the speaker mode function, then I flash few different custom rom, Now I found the speaker mode problem as tkr1992 has, since I unlock the bootloader (although I relock the bootloader) but HTC won't repair the phone free of charge for me, they say the phone need a new mainbroad... will cost me 2XX USD,
I don't even know is the phone has this problem when I first bought it or after I flash some custom rom.
HtC told me it should be software problem cos it is the same mic that use in speaker mode or non speaker mode, so when other side can hear you when you not on speaker mode, mean the mic is alright, BUT they told me it need to replace the mainboard cos I have unlock the bootloader so they can't not recover the phone to stock rom, BUT again I already relock the bootloader and RUU the stock rom back to the phone, still the same problem.
I need help too, Any good fellow can help??????????
I hope it is just a software fault. I did just receive an update today from T-Mobile, as my HOX is branded. The update is 1.28.110.7. It still seems that my mic problem is present.
Does anyone also know what fixes are included in this update?
Thanks
Any ideas anyone? Would really like to fix this instead of sending phone back to tmobile.
Thanks

Regarding to your inquiry about HTC One X, we would like to provide you with following advice and solution as below: First you can diagnosis the hardware issue on the speaker. Please kindly type *#*#3424#*#* on the dial screen, you will enable the function test program. And then select "Audio Test", tap Run. Please finish the test as instructions.
But it didn't work for me the phone just didn't do anything, you can try.
Thanks for that, i just tried the audio test diagnosis. The test shows that everything is working correctly however the same problem still occurs within a call like before.

Try reset to factory setting, see if it does any different.
That is the HTC guy try to do to my one x.
btw have you rooted your phone or unlocked the downloader?
You have working Navigation application in background and this make call routing first to speaker part permanently, not to earphone - like phone is in Handsfree mode. Try to disable it / shut down it / and all be fine.

I'm experiencing this exact issue as well - has anyone come up with any possible solutions?
There are 2 microphones on this phone, the upper one next to the headset jack and the other next to the lower right corner of the screen.
While on phone mode the lower one is the main microphone because its closer to your mouth, on speaker mode the upper one becomes the main mic.
It's probably a hardware fault since you flashed stock rom and it's still not working.
I seem to have this issue too - did anyone get a solution
Audio tests fine, but in Google Talk, or Google Hangout, or Phone Dialer in speaker mode - the mic input is not working, so recipient cannot hear.
Google Maps Issue
So my wife has the same phone (HTC One X) and has the most recent update to 4.0.4 (stock everything) and found out that it is indeed either the google 'navigation' app, or the google 'maps' app running in the background that will give this problem. Simply go to settings, then apps, then stop the maps or navigation process, make sure you go to the cached processes as well and stop those. Right after that her phone started working again. I also tested with the HTC test tool code that was given earlier and just like everyone else the test passed fine. So this should be the fix.
i have the same issue..
.. since updating my HOX to 3.18.401.1 and can confirm that disabling the google maps service solves the issue (at least for now)...

Hello,
I have the same problem and many users "HOX" have the same worries. It seems that when you change the screen touch there is a lot of trouble of this kind.
Does anyone find a solution?

Any update on this? Did you send it to HTC? Mine has also stopped suddenly a few days back while on viper 3.7.2. Tried factory reset, flashed the rom again, flashed other roms, but the problem is still there...
in may case it was a defective mainboard....
I had to send in my HOX 3 times to HTC repair until they (and me) figured out it was a Mainboard problem.
The first 2 repair attempts where quite strange, because they changed some parts which have absolutely nothing to do with the MIC and when i received it the problem was still here, but anyway
I came to the final diagnosis, because after turning the HOX on, it was working for some calls, then the MIC suddenly stopped...Getting more and more angry because of sending the phone in and receiving it 3 weeks later unrepaired, i once squeezed my HOX really hard during a "silent" phonecall and while squeezing it (on both lower edges) the MIC worked again.
After that experience all was clear, because this behaviour is typical for a hairline crack on the PCB. I wrote this on the RMA form and they exchanged the Mainboard....
So, finally i have my HOX again for 4 weeks now (after almost 2 1/2 months without it) and it works flawlessly....
So, good luck guys and a lot of patience

[Q] Update caused slow camera start from lock screen and slow to turn on

After upgrading from 4.0 to 4.1 I found that my phone won't switch on until I press the power button three times although sometimes it does switch on first go. Then, I installed the latest OTA patch to 4.1.1, software number 3.14.401.31 (international version) and found that accessing the camera from the lock screen, with security pattern enabled, is very slow. That is when you drag the camera to the unlock ring and release, the lock ring pauses for about 5 seconds before the camera starts up. This didn't happen before the last update.
So far I have taken the camera out of the unlock bar and rebooted the phone and turned off geo-tagging photos. None of these options helped.
If I turn off the pattern unlock then accessing the camera from the lock screen is normal so this appears to be something to do with accessing the camera with the pattern unlock enabled.
Hi,
I have encountered the same thing - seems like you're the only one who has reported it on these forums so far. I hadn't tried disabling the pattern unlock, thanks for the tip. I'll try this. But I'm quite unhappy about this new bug that just came out of nowhere with the 4.1 update, especially knowing that the camera quick start was one of the features HTC boasted about so much!
Yeah, not much on it at the moment but the upgrade is quite recent. Hopefully more people will find this thread and we can get some traction.
Same problem here, me and my wife. Wery annoing!

I emailed HTC and they replied the next day which was good. They asked me to reset the camera app, reboot the phone and then factory reset the phone if the other things didn't work. It didn't fix it yet so I'll see what they come up with next.

No factory resetting my phone didn't work. HTC rang me back and said that I need to return it to who I bought it from. In other words no fix and returning certainly won't prove anything. I think I'll just have to wait it out until it is fixed with another update ... hopefully.
Or maybe we should looking at getting an app that provides the same functionality?
Have te same bug guys :/

I tried the factory reset too, to no avail. Seems like disabling the phone lock is the only solution, but that's not really what I would call a satisfactory solution, since I'm using a VPN on my phone and that requires a lock + I just don't want to go lock-free.
We need this issue to be known to HTC and hopefully a fix will come.
Ps I don't think this problem was present in the JB update, but only came in the small FW update that followed.

Yeah it only came in the small update after the JB update. But another problem that I'm having is that to turn my phone on via the power button, sometimes I have to press the power button three times. It doesn't always happen, but sometimes after the phone has been off for a while, I hit it once and nothing, hit it again, nothing and then on the third press it comes on. I'm not sure if they are related to the "quick" camera launch problem.
One work around for this bug, if you use your camera a lot, is to leave your camera in standby mode. That is turn your phone off while the camera is active and then when you hit the power button it will go straight to camera. I don't use this myself as I have the lock pattern on to prevent my phone from turning on in my pocket which is common on HTC phones
HTC support are a waste of space
I have this issue too. HTC told me to factory reset it, then when that didn't work they told me to return it to the store to be sent away for repair. They really don't have a clue at HTC support.
The phone was returned to Vodafone yesterday and the repair centre said "no fault found" What are they on!!! The Vodafone store confirmed the issue was still there.
I now have the phone back with no resolution.
Going to call Consumer and get some advice.
I have this problem too, quite annoying.

[Q] Touchscreen problems after update?

The touchscreen stopped working on the phone a few months ago and a few weeks ago, after the phone had been dormant for a while, I decided to check if it worked and it was fine. But after a software update it stops working when you leave the phone for an hour or two, but if you turn the screen off and then back on it works (make sense?) Anyway, I'm assuming this is a software issue and there has been another update since then, current firmware is 4.2.2 and HTC Sense is 5.0, and I can't see this being a hardware issue. It doesn't really bother me that much but I want to sell the phone and I want it to be working perfectly when I do (I was thinking of putting a disclaimer but I fear the issue might worsen or the buyer will miss it). I've looked around for similar issues but there doesn't appear to be any, for most people it is a continuous thing (but it happened for others after updates as well.) Does anyone have any fixes for me?

Same issue here!

Yes same issue here. I've mentioned it not long after the Developer Edition received the OTA.
It's not even something that we can recreate, it's just completely random. It stays that way until a reboot and then it's fine again. Very irritating.

I had a problem with the keyboard lagging which got worse after the lollipop update, I was considering a warranty claim or rooting the phone and then the microphone packed in and the decision was made, I called the network who advised me to send it to HTC for repair which I did, it also had a few sync problems too, I asked the technical support guy about this problem and he said it would have to be reflashed, I sent it to them and they did the work, replacement microphones, replacement receiver, replacement lower board, replacement rubber something or other which I was told is something under the screen, replacement camera and a few others and of course it was flashed, I got it back after 8 days expecting my otherwise brilliant phone to be as it should be as I have come to expect from HTC, I switched it on and did the initial stages of making it work, I let it restore the last backup I made (off the phone with faults) which reported had failed but it started to restore the backed up apps, settings and my contacts, everything restored to how I had it before minus a couple of apps and a few notification settings, I have been using it for 2 days now however the keyboard has not been fixed by flashing it, unless the errors could have been brought in by the restoration? I have experienced the screen freeze and start jumping, jumping to the all open apps page, keyboard lag, keyboard is inaccurate, I went into the EE shop and they said that it should go back to HTC again, I haven't tried to hard reset it and go back to the factory settings and not restore the backup image this time, I've never had any problems with the 3 HTC phones I've owned, it is a good phone otherwise
Damn, I just went back to Dev Edition and sure enough it happened to me. Has this ever been fixed? This is way too annoying for me.
Possible Fix
For what it's worth, I went into App Manager to clear the Sense Input data as suggested by a previous poster (thank you) but did not have a 'Clear Data' button. There was a 'Settings' button though where I was able to turn off HTC Sense Input, after which my Swype keyboard immediately started working again. First time I've been able to resolve this SUPER annoying issue without rebooting the phone. Time will tell if it's a real fix; I'll update this post if not.
Phone is a brand new M8, still on stock 5.0.1

Camera not detected at all

So issue started as follows:
a. For a few days, I've noticed that camera will give very blurry photos and videos. I tried a few things (including cleaning laser/camera lens with a cloth), but it wouldn't work.
b. Decided to restart phone today and see if that helps (turn off and on right?)
c. I now get error "Unable to start the camera" when I tap on the camera app.
I have tried the following:
a. install 3rd party app - won't work
b. restart phone (multiple times) - won't work
c. clear data/clear cache, disable, enable, remove permissions and allow permissions for Camera app - won't work
d. reboot phone in safe mode - won't work
e. Go into diagnostic mode using #*#*3434*#*# to test camera. Guess what, there are no options to test camera!
f. Go into diagnostic mode and test flashlight. Flashlight won't turn on anymore. Also, I found that the system's flashlight app is gone.
All this leads me to believe that for some reason the phone is not detecting the camera hardware anymore. I'm out of ideas. I bought the phone overseas, and local HTC told me to return it overseas or pay a handling fee of $100 and they'll look at it, but will probably not be able to do anything anyway.
Phone is just a bit over 1 month old.
Any ideas?
I'm having the same problem. I'm rooted on unlocked HTC 10 on stock 2.41.617.3. I'm S-On. I've tried force stop and delete cache and data. Tried safe mode and tried a 3rd party camera app. I just got by phone back from HTC to repair the camera and it worked before flashing the January security update and rooting it. Afterwards, I now get "unable to start the camera"

So, I completely wiped data and reset factory settings, but camera still wouldn't start.
Flashed phone back to Taiwanese version, and it's now working, but original issues are back, i.e. blurry camera that can't focus on anything. I restarted phone a few times to see if it would go back to "unable to start the camera", but it's still working, just blurry and unable to focus. I'm still going through the various updates now. Have notification for Nougat. will try that and test camera again.
[UPDATE]
Interesting update: So, I upgraded to Nougat just now, and after restarting, I tested camera, it's not working anymore. Here's my speculation: 1) camera module (hardware) is broken/fkd up/stuffed, but only partly? Whereas Android 6 will let it work, but blurry and no focus, Android 7 just won't let it work at all. That's just my theory that makes a little sense atm. Anyone else?
I think you are correct, i would send it for warranty (if you still have that)
Good luck !
I did a hard reset and the camera started working again.

Lucky! Is yours ANY blurry or is it fully functional? Also, if it stops working again, check whether your flashlight works (mine wouldn't/isn't).

It was blurry when I purchased it used. That's why I sent it back to HTC since it was under warranty. It looked like it was a bad auto focus module, although HTC never said so. Fixed and was working well, then today (after the reset I posted about), then today it stopped working. I'm going to RUU tonightor tomorrowand install apps one by one. It seems to be softwa rerelated.

I'm sure it will work if you go to android 6, but it will be blurry. It won't work after you restart in android 7. That's my experience
My wife's 10 was having this issue. Neither a factory reset nor an RUU helped. But randomly it just started working for her. There were app updates from Google for photos and chrome but I have no idea if they're related but nothing else changed. Really strange!
Edit: a day later the camera is not working again.

I've been experiencing the very same problem and the only thing that helps is hard reset or RUU. It doesn't always work on the first try, but after 3-4 attempts the camera starts working perfectly for a period of time -- sometimes a week, sometimes a month and a half (my personal record, which was set a few days ago, when camera died again). Then I always have one day of the focus getting disabled followed by a complete shutdown with all the symptoms described by OP (no flashlight icon, 'unable to start' message). Has anyone found a permanent solution to this problem?
I have the same problem with my htc
I have the same problem on a non-rooted Verizon HTC 10... the camera app won't open, the flashlight won't work, the camera shortcuts disappeared from the top Nougat menu, and any other app I try says it can't find the camera.
I'm unable to find any troubleshooting or debugging methods yet... any suggestions? I have Android Studio but I haven't learned much of it, I'm wondering if Developer mode or the Studio USB debugging can help...

A few things that seem to have helped some people are:
removing SD card and restarting the phone without it;
clearing camera app's cache;
uninstalling all 3rd party apps that might be interfering with the camera;
RUU-ing the phone with an official firmware (you don't need root or S-OFF for that, as long as you don't try to downgrade from Nougat to Marshmallow).
Nothing but the last method worked for me. Though it doesn't do the trick every time and even when it does, it is only a temporary solution, as the problem keeps popping up again after a while. Last time the camera in my HTC 10 started working without any software interference from my side: I went on a hike in cold weather and, as I hypothesise, something about it (temperature differential? pressure change?) restored camera functionality for a couple of weeks, after which it died again. This incident led me to believe that this is a hardware problem and the camera module simply isn't securely connected to the motherboard in our phones or something. My wild guess is that RUUing might sometimes help simply because of the heat rewriting firmware produces.

Oh *smack* sorry I forgot to mention that I already tried clearing the camera app's cache, wiping cache from recovery menu, and factory resetting the phone.
I think it's a hardware issue since I think it got a little wet from sprinklers and I read the phone isn't water resistant, and also that the camera module is flaky anyways... Verizon accidentally cancelled my insurance without telling me and I haven't seen yet that HTC covers it on warranty.
I'll try these other things you suggest, but do you think it would be worth trying to have HTC repair it? It'll be worth it for $350 or less, or I could try a local shop, though I think they'd just do the same thing I would (research it on Google, buy the necessary repair parts, then painstakingly fix it), but I've seen in repair videos that this phone is very fragile and difficult to work with, so I'm not sure all that time and effort would even be worth just buying a new version outright, and I'd like the phone to work for the eclipse!.
Same Problem here, since Saturday... [emoji85]

I actually went to a repair shop about a month ago and was told that they were certain part replacement would leave significant marks on the metal body =/ If you carry the phone in a full case, I guess this should not be a big problem. AFAIK, an official HTC repair shop would just replace the phone under warranty in cases like this due to how low simplicity of disassembly was on designers' priority list when 10 was being sketched out, but you're saying Verizon canceled your warranty?
I also face this unable to start camera.
My software no is 2.51.617.11
I live in Myanmar (Burma). No one know this problem including HTC Myanmar.
Apparently there are a handful of us who have faulty cameras. Haven't heard anything from HTC. I have tried everything listed here and more. No luck. The only way my camera works is on older firmware (1.9.xxx.xx) and running Marshmallow.
well my htc 10 started playing up today, camera wont start when you touch the camera app on the screen..ive had this phone for 9 months , my warranty expires in march 2019, ive tried all the above methods none worked, phoned HTC uk up and they said to send it in..i hope they replace it with another unit ?..if they do replace it with another unit will the wrranty be transferred over to that, ie expire in march 2019? i also noticed that the flashlight app doesnt work it just says on screen "loading"..
I have the exact same problem, tried all the suggestions, but still it says 'Unable to start camera'. I even opened up the phone, and replaced the camera with another HTC 10 which had water damage. Problem still exists, which leads me to believe that the camera isn't the issue, it might be the mainboard it's connected to in combination with Nougat? The other case can be that the broken phone I got the camera from might have the same problem.... allthough I think that's unlikely. I'd like to order another camera to make sure its not that, but can't really find one. Anyone got any further with this issue?
