Once it's flashed, you can delete it with no ill effects.

Agreed. Feel free to get rid of it. In the case of roms, though I usually leave a known good PC136IMG.ZIP on the root of my card, just in case.
This has been a telepathic transmission from the Outer Limits.

Yeah, I was thinkin it might be a good idea to leave a kernel and ROM on there JIC... But there's a lot of font packs and app zips I can get rid of... thanks

Are you using a custom recovery? That is, Clockwork or Amon RA.
This has been a telepathic transmission from the Outer Limits.

Yeah, I use Amon Ra for backups.... Sometimes I switch back to clockwork so I can use ROM manager though..

I believe you have to flash whichever one you wish to use.
This has been a telepathic transmission from the Outer Limits.

It's easy if you have ROM manager just go in and click "flash Alternative Recovery".. that will change you to Amon ra... then when you're ready to go back go back into ROM manager and click "Flash lastest ClockWork Mod" (or something like that) and you're back to clockwork.... takes all of about 2 secs

[Q] New update.zip for flashing custom roms?

I have been using eugene's update.zip to get into clockwork mod.(along with the engineering build) It works fine.
My problem is it contains an old version of superuser.
I had been using su-2.3.3. But every time I go into clockwork mod for anything I'm reverted back to su-2.1.
Which doesn't even work at this point, it actually breaks the app altogether, causing repeated FC.
What I've been doing is just reflashing su-2.3.3 to get back up and running, but I was wondering
is there a new update.zip for getting into clockwork mod?
Something that doesn't even have su installed.
Just remove su from that update and resign it...

OK so I removed he superuser.apk. How do I resign this? Sorry I'm a noob at this.
Personally I use ROM Manager by Clockwork in the market. Koush keeps it updated very well and there is no need to keep update.zip on your sd card with this app, it allows you to reboot directly into recovery from the app.

WOW!!
Your sooo right!! I finally gave rom manager a shot and your right this is waaayy easier.
I had considered using it but I was unsure about how it could access the recovery seeing as the MT3GS has got a weird nand thingy.
Also I'm so used to the G1 and N1's aman ra recovery's that I always looked at clockwork as being lame. But I stand corrected, I'm going to buy the pay version.

I agree, I do the same thing. I love how well it works to it's perfect for reboot recovery too, now extra steps in the process of getting to recovery. I do keep the update.zip on my sdcard just in case something goes bad I can get back in without relying on my apps loading.

[Q] ClockworkMod to amonRA recovery and other MISC questions

Okay so i have a question about switch from clockworkmod to amonra. How would I go about doing this without rom manager and not using the adb method. Could I flash it through my existing clockwork mod recovery? Or do i HAVE to do it through fastboot?
This is another random question,
Which do you think is better cm6.1 with snap8.x( x being whatever version)
or cm6 with snap7.6BFS?
I don't know about fastboot, but I tried to flashing it through clockworkmod recovery and it's not working..

Bumpppppppp
Flashing through recovery? I don't think that could be done. You can only do ADB, ROM Manager, Fastboot, or flashing as a PC36IMG.zip in hboot.
As for the kernels, stick with stock on CM 6.1. Snap 8 was designed for CM6, as was Snap 7. Besides, CM 6.1 nightly (and I think RC2) is running the .35 kernel, which is what Snap 9 will be based off of.
Okay thanks I get it now.
i am trying to find the amonra recovery, so i can partition my sd card.. can someone point me in the right direction? maybe some quick notes on how to flash it?
Do a search for the Amon Ra PC36IMG.zip in the dev section, put it on the root of your SDCard, boot into Hboot (vol-down & Power button).
Wait for the scan to fond the file and when it asks if you want to update, do yes, and it will flash Amon Ra onto your Phone, then you cna boot up into recovery.
Prett yeasy actually.
just make sure the file is named EXACTLY PC36IMG.zip

Yes, you should always remove pc36img files after installing them. That way you don't run into any complications later if you try to use another file of the same sort, such as a splash screen or something.

Tell ya what I do;
I have a folder on my SDCard I named XDA, and then I have subfolders for ROMS, Kernels, Themes, Apps, and Utilities. I'd rename the Amon Ra file PC36IMG_amon ra.zip and move it into a folder on your SDCard so you always have it relatively handy, then you just drop the amon_ra part and move it to your root again, if you need it.
I have the same thing with the RUU for my phone

I never thought of that, great idea. I think I'll try doing that. I kind of do the same with my splash screens. I'll have a few on my phone at one time and once I install, I'll rename it with a description as to what it is so I don't forget. I also do the same with my boot animations, at least the ones that aren't flashable. I just never thought about making a folder. Now I can't wait to get home and re-organize my card.
Thanks for the pointer! The teacher has been schooled, lmao

You can remove it or just rename it, cuz if its named PC36IMG, it'll scan and be detected every time you go to the bootloader, so its your preference.

good idea but, that will take up some space on your sd card, depending on how many roms you have on there, including themes, splash screens, recoveries, radios, so on and so forth, what i did is the same thing but on my pc, i have plenty of storage on my pc, and that way keep room on my sd card for music, pictures, videos, and whatever else. so if i need any roms or recoveries, splashes, bootanimations, themes, or whatever, they are on my pc, all catagorized and in corresponding folders.
and also if you dont have the room on your pc, it is posted here and able to find with search key. lol

[Q] Delete Clockworkmod Directory

This is probably a real dumb question, but just to be sure I figured I'd ask...
I am using the Amon Ra recovery.. ..however, I first started w/ Clockwork after rooting.. ..can I safely delete "clockworkmod" directory from my phone? I guess I'm asking because I don't see an AmonRa directory and just wanted to make sure my new recovery wasn't just leeching whatever it needed from my Clockwork directory.
Actually.. ..while I'm in this line of questioning.. ..what exactly is either one of these programs for? Just an interface to flash ROMs and other mods from?
I want to know this also because I'm done with CWM.

Yes you can delete it as long as you don't want the backups from it anymore ra backups will be in a new folder called nandriod .

Also your backups from cwm won't work on ra you can restore them on cwm then switch to ra and make a new one from there just go back and fourth till you have them all on ra this is what I did when I switched way back when.

They are recoveries. They do just that, allow for recovery. A safe place to mess with your Operating System (aka "ROM") without the actual O.S. running.
Mainly used for making backups, wiping, and flashing new ROMs. A nice front end to doing these things, instead of having to use the command line and having to type everything out.

[Q] Rom manager is not switching recoveries.

Any idea why ?
When i tell rom manager to install a recovery it shows as if it's doing it. But then when I reboot in to it, it's still the same (right now i have Amon)
I've seen people have this problem before. I've never used Rom Manager so I haven't experienced it, but I've helped others with the same issue.
Since you're on Amon Ra, I'm assuming you're trying to flash ClockworkMod? If so you'll need to get a PC36IMG of CWM and put it on the root of your SD card. Boot into the bootloader - you can use an app to do this or you can do it manually. To do so manually, power down the phone. Then hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time until you see the bootloader. It will ask you to update, choose yes (volume up) when it asks you to update.
Ta-da! You're done.
Here's a PC36IMG of CWM, I'm not sure the exact version as it's only there if someone else needs it, but it is 3.x --
http://db.tt/9sksyTK
Also, out of curiosity, why are you switching?
I had to use ra for the radios update.
I had to load it manually too. I wish I could find why its not working
If you on amon_ra, I don't believe rom manager will work.

Stay on RA and flash thru recovery and learn how to use those tools. It will help you out in the long run...Some how some way
Why would you want to go from AR to CWM?? To me, that's a downgrade
Because I can batch a few zips easily....
I had that same problem but I did use the above post to go back but now I use ra its way better the only good thing about cwm is you can name your backups but I just back them up to my PC anyway and name them just incase my sd card gets fried.

You can name them on your SDCard.
Just do it like this: BDEARS-20110605-1956-mik_101_full
Notice, no spaces, and the original name still in there.

You can do that and restore them like that or do you have to delete the name first cause that would be awesome I thought it wouldn't work if you renamed it.
Also can you use any name or does it have to be the name of the ROM it is of?

ClockworkMod Backup

Guys I just make a backup for my GS3 on CWM and see that the backup was saved on the internal sd card, there is a possibility to change the path and save it directly on external sd or have to make a copy/paste.
Another thing the backup name and date is 5-1-1970.
Load TWRP recovery. You can then select if you want to backup to internal or external SD.

Saying Rom Manager sucks is just a ridiculous statement.
I've used it extensively and never ever had a problem.
I prefer CWM over TWRP also. Its a matter of preference.
Rom Manager shouldn't be used with the s2 but with my s3 it works perfectly.

I agree. I like clockwork mod touch and it works just fine on my s3 as well. never used twrp yet, nor have i needed to. What are some pros and cons between the two?
For me its the smooth, intuitive interface and the ease of use on twrp. Clockwork is very straight forward and stable, tried and true. TWRP is very different but once you use it it will all make sense.

Backup date of creation concern.
The debate of which is better,(TWRP or CWM), which is more preferred or whatever is irrelevant. I dont know why you people cloud up a post like this with a debate in stupidity. But let me ask a question about something I cant seem to find anywhere else and this post only hints at. I was having some difficulties getting my device to complete a backup and ended up here. Its the date of creation listed on the backup folder I wish to bring up. It may not matter much, but I am very curious as to why an app would create a folder with such a date.
