ClockworkMod Backup - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Guys I just make a backup for my GS3 on CWM and see that the backup was saved on the internal sd card, there is a possibility to change the path and save it directly on external sd or have to make a copy/paste.
Another thing the backup name and date is 5-1-1970.

Load TWRP recovery. You can then select if you want to backup to internal or external SD.

or stay on CWM and use Rom Manager to select where the backup will be saved and name it what you want.

Thanks to all for your response.

If you use nandroid backup then you can select your backup path as well.

Is it? So like...when you create a back up and then go to recover it, it actually works unlike in CWM?

Saying Rom Manager sucks is just a ridiculous statement.
I've used it extensively and never ever had a problem.
I prefer CWM over TWRP also. Its a matter of preference.
Rom Manager shouldn't be used with the s2 but with my s3 it works perfectly.

I agree. I like clockwork mod touch and it works just fine on my s3 as well. never used twrp yet, nor have i needed to. What are some pros and cons between the two?

For me its the smooth, intuitive interface and the ease of use on twrp. Clockwork is very straight forward and stable, tried and true. TWRP is very different but once you use it it will all make sense.

Backup date of creation concern.
The debate of which is better,(TWRP or CWM), which is more preferred or whatever is irrelevant. I dont know why you people cloud up a post like this with a debate in stupidity. But let me ask a question about something I cant seem to find anywhere else and this post only hints at. I was having some difficulties getting my device to complete a backup and ended up here. Its the date of creation listed on the backup folder I wish to bring up. It may not matter much, but I am very curious as to why an app would create a folder with such a date.

[Q] Rom manager is not switching recoveries.

Any idea why ?
When i tell rom manager to install a recovery it shows as if it's doing it. But then when I reboot in to it, it's still the same (right now i have Amon)
I've seen people have this problem before. I've never used Rom Manager so I haven't experienced it, but I've helped others with the same issue.
Since you're on Amon Ra, I'm assuming you're trying to flash ClockworkMod? If so you'll need to get a PC36IMG of CWM and put it on the root of your SD card. Boot into the bootloader - you can use an app to do this or you can do it manually. To do so manually, power down the phone. Then hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time until you see the bootloader. It will ask you to update, choose yes (volume up) when it asks you to update.
Ta-da! You're done.
Here's a PC36IMG of CWM, I'm not sure the exact version as it's only there if someone else needs it, but it is 3.x --
http://db.tt/9sksyTK
Also, out of curiosity, why are you switching?
I had to use ra for the radios update.
I had to load it manually too. I wish I could find why its not working
If you on amon_ra, I don't believe rom manager will work.

Stay on RA and flash thru recovery and learn how to use those tools. It will help you out in the long run...Some how some way
Why would you want to go from AR to CWM?? To me, that's a downgrade
Because I can batch a few zips easily....
I had that same problem but I did use the above post to go back but now I use ra its way better the only good thing about cwm is you can name your backups but I just back them up to my PC anyway and name them just incase my sd card gets fried.

You can name them on your SDCard.
Just do it like this: BDEARS-20110605-1956-mik_101_full
Notice, no spaces, and the original name still in there.

You can do that and restore them like that or do you have to delete the name first cause that would be awesome I thought it wouldn't work if you renamed it.
Also can you use any name or does it have to be the name of the ROM it is of?

Thanks for this post because I had no idea this was out there. I have a few questions. How is this differ from clockword MOD Recovery? What does TWRP even stand for? Also in version 5.4.8.5 works on the internal and external mounts of the SD Cards and it only backs up the system as opposed to the media at the time. You mind schooling me on the differences of this and clockwork Mod? Thanks

Great find, trying this out now, seems to work so far. Also for anyone who isn't comfortable with ADB, you can follow the instructions from 'su' on the OP and install this with Terminal Emulator as well.
EDIT: I can also verify that TWRP does mount both internal and external SD via the local file manager, however I haven't been able to mount it with my computer. Also, TWRP by default back-ups to your sd-card and not the phone the way it should.

You will need to go into Mount and ensure that SD Card is checked. This will not allow your computer to see it, however you will be able to view the SD Card from the built in file manager and back-up/restore to the SD Card as well.

No dice. The option to mount the sdcard is there and it is unselected, but I am not able to select it. No need to have it visible via USB for me, but backup/restore and most importantly the ability to flash from the sdcard are must haves.

It seems a bit finicky, I would try clicking on and around until it selects. I don't think you being on AT&T would affect that, but that could always be a possibility as well.

No, still not coming up with anything in /sdcard. If I hit the "terminal" button in the center, it reads E: Can't mount /sdcard. I flashed CWM orginally using a different out file path in the dd command, but if my linux knowledge serves me correct it still points to the same memory blocks. I've flashed back and forth between CWM and TWRP several times to no avail. Also, I'm flashing this via terminal emulator and not adb but I doubt that makes a difference either.
Edit: internal sdcard shows up under /data/media. this breaks recovery scripts that sen TWRP looking for /sdcard, but at least I can flash manually from TWRP.

CWM recovery Problem

Hello. I'm running clockwork mod touch v 5.8.4.7 and when I backup any rom it names the backup 1970.**.** I know that cwm v6 is out, however I prefer cwm v5 (I feel as though on my gnex the nandroids took loads longer to backup and restore. And also prefer the old backup method as opposes to the new one.) So here are my questions. 1)has anyone else encountered this bug. And 2)is there a different cwm version that's either newer but not v6 that doesn't have this bug?
I'm pretty sure this is a known bug which doesn't have a solution for the time being. What you can do is backup through Rom Manager; this way you can name the file whatever you want.

Your question has been answered, but I would like to add two things:
ROM Manager can name backup folders for you, however, the datestamp on that folder and the included files will still say 1970. You can always rename the folder manually, also.
I was depressed about CWM's new backup methods with v6 as well. At least until I learned that it still has support for the old "full backup" method. I really detest incremental backups for many reasons. In my opinion, tar should be the default option.
To re-enable full backup mode with CWM v6, navigate to:
backup and restore > choose backup format > tar.
This setting saves, by the way. It stores in /sdcard/clockworkmod/.default_backup_format. This file contains the text "tar".
There is zero reason not to use v6 over v5. You can store backups on your extSD now. The only thing I don't like about it is total lack of UI organization. It is a total mess, but I love it anyhow.

Its under batch, scroll down till you see recovery mode, only one option that says create update.zip. Correct me if i am wrong.
This is music to my ears. As a recovering flashaholic, I fully realize how much time it takes to restore 100+ apps. Plus, I always feel like my phone is so laggy during the restore, so it really does take about 15-20 minutes. This step will be a HUGE time saver.
The one question I have is does the first boot take longer? Would you almost recommend flashing the ROM and booting first, let the ROM settle and then boot to recovery and flash the TB zip?

It is not necessary to sign update.zip unless you are using a stock recovery. Since most of us are rooted, I imagine we're also using a custom recovery so it won't be necessary. Like another user said, just flash it like normal.
After I create update.zip, can I edit it on my PC to add/remove items?

CM10 is keeping my backup from running?

So, I rooted and then made a nandroid backup - then I flashed CM10 and set that all up, no issues. Then I rebooted into restore to check on my backup and CWM doesn't see the backup. I can browse to my backup using a file explorer and I can see it but my CWM doesn't see it.
As if thats not bad enough, I convince my buddy to try flashing CM10 on his Sprint GS3. First thing he says to me after is that his CWM doesn't see his back up. Now he's pissed because he can't restore to stock - same boat I'm in.
Has anyone else experienced this yet??
Thanks

Do you still have the CWM image (recovery.img)? If so, download Android Terminal Emulator from the Play Store, have the recovery image on the internal memory, run:
Once in the terminal type: su (press enter)
Then type: dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (press enter)
I think it flashed a newer version of CWM and it doesn't see the old backup you made.

Does is matter that the recovery.img isn't in the root of the SD card - but its in a folder called clockworkmod? so the path would be /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.img

That's your current recovery. We need your older one. Well that's my guess anyway. Which recovery did you first install? If you can refind it, that would be best.

Thats the recovery I made while I was still stock, I made that backup just before flashing CM10. Once I was on CM10 I didn't make any backups.

I was just browsing my file structure and something looks weird since flashing CM10. It looks like it took all my folders that used to be in the root directory of my SD card and put them all in a folder called "0" so the path would be sdcard/0/ and that "0" folder has all the contents of my phone. If I browse to sdcard/ I see most of my folders also but not all of them and most of them are empty. My buddy is reporting the same scenario on his phone after flashing CM10

Well that explains it. You're coming from ICS aren't you? In JB, they divided it by users (0, 1, 2..). Copy your backup to your new emplacement and it should be fine.

No, I had JB not ICS - I tried moving it to the root as well and still not working. My buddy also noticed the change in his file structure upon flashing CM10 as well - he was also on JB - ugh!!!!!

Mind if I ask why you need that backup? Anything went wrong in the flash?

Haha - no everything went ok, but if I want to go back to stock and the way my phone was set up before - I can't. I'm so anal that just knowing I can't restore to the way I was is enough to keep me up at night haha. I love CM10 but just knowing I can't restore is enough to make me blow out my phone and install stock rom and start over - it's not easy being me

If you never need to go back to stock, just use Odin

lol That old restore is no good to you. Tibu is independant so as long as you don't wipe you SD, you can restore, whatever you flash. So here's my suggestion, make it the way you like it (I'm sure you'll spend all the time in the world doing it I'm the same way lol) and make one good backup. Keep it up to date when you make changes (especially your launcher) and w/e you decide to flash afterwards, you'll only have to restore your TiBu backup.
