rom flashing advice - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ive been flashing roms for awhile now but Ive never successfully flashed a rom with the equipped kernel...it never boots my phone, it will go as far as the boot animation then start boot loop...so I ALWAYS have to load a diff kernel...then the rom will boot...are there any other things to do in CWM lo load up..fix permissions or anything? I always wipe cache/dalvik, data

Have you tried unrooting your phone then flashing froyo then reroot with unrevolked 3 and then flash the ROM that you use... I am a noob so I am just going by what I seen someone suggest before and it worked for them...good luck

Uhm..sorta thought about it but I'm leiry of bricking......

I went ahead and tried..restored 2.2 stock went back to the required radio by unrevoked3..just gets stuck at the boot animation..flash a diff kernel and all is well....ill just continue to do this! woot! was weird seeing stock froyo again haha

The only way to brick your phone that i know of is careless radio flashing. Flashing back between versions of android is fine I've done it probably 50 times. Don't be worries to unroot and maybe run an ruu because that's an annoying problem.

Can anyone explain how Rom manager works on the slide?
I have never been able to get rom manager to do anything.
It downloads the update.zip and then reboots into recovery, fails and reboots the phone.
Everytime I have had to flash a rom, Ive had to do it the old way.
Any ideas?

Have you flashed the engineering ROM?
No,
I have not flashed the eng rom. I had thought there was a thread by Wes that warned against it?
I have been using the MR1v4 pretty much since the first day I rooted the phone and have never had any problems with it.
I am also aware that flashing a radio can be dangerous and my understanding is that if I flash the eng rom that I have to flash a new radio.
If this is all necessary, well then, so be it, but if it can be avoided that would be preferred.
Thank you
Ive flashed clockwork, and it still doesn't work.
I ended up taking the ENG-build off and rerooted the phone. However it is still having issues loading custom roms :/
No engineering rom = no test keys in recovery = no using rom manager.
Read the whole thread, and the engineering thread. The thread from wes was wrong.
Flashing a radio isn't dangerous. I think you may be referring to the days of the danger spl on the G1. In that instance if the radio wasn't the newest version and three plqanets weren't lined up just right... flashing the danger spl would brick your phone. But flashin a new radio is perfectly safe. There is mention in other threads that since we cannot change the spl for the slide yet that bricking it is rather difficult yet not impossible =) so don't go trying, lol.

Recovery work perfectly fine, let me try flashing some other rom.
Also, because this might be a bad radio flash, can reflashing radio hurt?

Could you give more information so I could be of help. Like what Rom, kernel, recovery anything specific...

I recommend you flash the previous version and then do a full wipe....next, flash a rom...then when that boots you can go back into recovery again and restore a nandroid if you would like....

Using Clockwork 2.5.1 (?, flashing right now) so I can't check.
Was on MYN RLS4. Flashed the bundled radio zip linked above, now in this situation. Currently, I'm flashing to RLS5 after a ADB push of the zip file. Edit: Was on BS#6 Kernel
If this doesn't work, I'll flash a deodexed stock 3.70.
Any more recommendations?
edit: Looks like I got past the HTC Evo 4G screen, just waiting for the MYN boot animation now.
edit2: I booted up, thanks for the help. At least I can rest knowing that my radio flash wasn't borked.

Ive had the same problem today on two different evos, with two different recoveries! Both times I just booted into recovery and ran a full nandroid backup, then restarted and it stuck in white screen.
First was with amon_ra recovery. I pulled the battery after it stuck on white screen and it rebooted fine.
Second time was with clockwork. I just now pulled the battery and rebooted..... and it looks to be sticking again.
Both are running Fresh Rom. v3.5.01 I think.
Do you have the SDK installed and a usb cable? Hook up the evo, then do: "adb logcat", power on, and post the output. Note: it sounds like it is looping so watch carefully and when you see it looping hit "crtl+c" to stop logcat.
Do this! download this to you sd card http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PXIYUNSY than boot into bottloader, let the phone search for the file update and this should get you up and running. The problem doing what you did is that that works when a different kernel not htc kernel.
good lookin out

What's the purpose of doing this? Just like a RUU, right?
yes! But this should give you all that you are looking for, is much easier.trust me!
You will not Loose Root.
You lucky son of a gun, my old evo wouldn't even not into recovery. Just bootloader. After stressing out for hours trying to fix it I finally got a replacement
The same thing happened to me and your link worked like a charm. I was just wondering if after I did this would I still be able to try and flash a different rom? or am I stuck with this one? I am just wondering....as you can see Im pretty new to the rooting game.
Basically, if you update your radios, you have to also update your rom to 3.70 build otherwise the phone won't get pass the bootanimation screen. Normally, you would update the rom then update the radios. Also, to nandroid or flash back to 3.30 build, you have to downgrade the radios back to the version used for 3.30. I was stuck on bootloop with new radios if I flashed any rom below 3.70, but downgrading the radios to previous version allowed for 3.30 nandroid restores.
Ok thank you a bunch for the info!! you were a life saver lol

Ok so I did what you said above and loaded that file onto sd card and went into bootloader if worked and i managed to get into recovery and flashed fresh and got the phone booted all way but I want Warm two point two so i flashed that version 4 and it wont go past the white HTC screen what can I do

[Q] Clockwork recovery problem...

Hey guys, check it out. I just figured out how to get into clockwork recovery, and assuming and going about flashing a rom just like I would on my evo, I go ahead and download a rom for the epic, flash it, and it works fine. So it loads up like normal after a flash n reboot, and it kept saying no service... so I was like... uh... weird.. so I booted back into clockwork and tried nand back to the backup I did before flashing anything, of course... but I started getting an error saying it couldn't open recovery.log and now it freezes restoring at saying "lost+found" .... so I pull the batter, and now it just automatically revolts to clockwork all the time, and trying to boot the system normally... I'm not using CWM 3+.. rather the older 2.xx ... any ideas?
It's hard to understand your writing. I think the best thing you can do is use Odin to flash back to stock and start over. You didn't say what version of android you were on but if it's dk28 did you flash the modem?
What rom did you flash? I take it you were on stock di18 before?
Flashing a rom based on one of the leaked froyo builds without also flashing a modem could cause the initial problem.
And nandroid doesn't backup or restore the kernel, so using that to restore still leaves you with the kernel of the rom you flashed before, which can cause problems across build versions.
You're best bet is to odin back to di18 and start again.

Thanks a bunch, I know I re-read my post and was like.. man I wasnt descriptive at all... LOL, but I checked out this Odin, and TBH i have NO idea what all this stuff is for the Epic, only doing it to fix the booboo I did on my g/f's phone I have the Evo so its totally different stuff almost... Anyways im back to stock, now I need to read up before screwing around again .

[Q] Can't load Recovery

So I installed that Beats Audio for all Gingerbread phones yesterday night.
Flashed fine and the phone worked fine.
Today I wanted to update to the newest Nightly for CM7 and when I went went into the bootloader and chose Recovery the phone restarted back to the Bootloader screen.
Is there any fix for this?
Thanks

why do you boot into the bootloader first?no multi-boot option?Anyway,it sounds like the CM7 rom you flashed is corrupted,It sounds like you might have to format your sd card and start over,or reload a new recovery from the bootloader. If you had a multi-boot option you might be able to solve this without formatting.
hey,
try doing a factory reset getting rid of any apps you currently have and try using the advanced power menu to boot into recovery if that doesnt work, try re flashing a different recovery. let us know how it goes from there!
Good luck,
Stevo
Just try reflashing the recovery, should solve the problem.

CWM is junk, for one. Switch to Amon Ra
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^°^
What he said. Man, I just finished typing the same advice in a different thread. Lol.
Seems people coming from Samsung devices in particular tend to start with CWM. I'm not speculating on the OP here, just a trend I've noticed as of late.

I used CWM for my initial nandroid, after first rooting with Unrevoked, then flashed Amon. Anyway, as said try re-flashing recovery. Also, FYI, that "all Gingerbread Roms" was just for one device, the article was slightly inaccurate. I flashed the Beats audio zip myself but upon investigating in Roote Explorer saw that none of the files had actually written.
CWM is a great and sometimes better choice for a lot of phones, just not the Evo

I have not been able to get it to work yet.
I have been thinking about Wiping everything and starting from scratch again, but I am afraid that if I wipe I wont be able to get into the recovery and get screwed and not be able to re-flash C-Mod 7.
I will attach a video of wtf my phone is doing.

[Q] bootloop please help!!!!!

not exactly sure what i did but when i try to boot phone it says android is updating and says starting apps. itll count the apps then just restart that proccess.counting the apps zero to whatever back to zero so on and so forth. ive flashed i stock rom via odin, tried recovery, each time wiping data, cach, and dalvik. anyone help me out?
Easiest fix is to reflash it. Flashing does fail quite a few times

Maybe a bad download of the rom. Redownload rom then wipe and reflash
